The Bulletin - St. Andrew Catholic Church
October 2, 2016 27th Sunday of Ordinary Time St. Andrew CATHOLIC CHURCH 806 NE Alberta Street Portland, OR 97211 Tel: 503-281-4429 Fax: 503-281-4411 [email protected] www.standrewchurch.com Pastor: Fr. Dave Zegar St. Andrew is a faith community baptized into one body, which honors and celebrates diversity. We welcome and include persons of every color, language, ethnicity, origin, ability, sexual orientation, gender expression, marital status, and life situation. La Parroquia de San Andrés es una comunidad bautizada en un cuerpo, que honra y celebra la diversidad. Acogemos a las personas de todos colores, lenguas, razas, origenes, habilidades, orientación sexual, estado civil y estilos de vida. Parish Mission St. Andrew Parish recognizes that, as Jesus Christ was sent by God to “bring the good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives, and to the blind new sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the Lord’s year of favor,” (Luke 4:18) La Parroquia de San Andrés reconoce que, así como Jesús fue enviado por Dios “para traer la Buena Nueva a los pobres, para anunciar libertad a los cautivos, y a los ciegos nueva luz. Poner en libertad a los oprimidos y proclamar el año de gracia del Señor,”(San Lucas 4:18) ....so it is the mission of St. Andrew Parish to be a visible presence of Christ in our culturally and racially diverse neighborhood, rooted in the Gospel and nurtured by liturgy, prayer, and the community of faith. As such we commit ourselves to work with the poor, the powerless, and the oppressed for the liberation of all; to seek justice, compas- sion, and peace in our lives, community, and world; and to proclaim and celebrate God’s unconditional love for all. October 2, 2016 27th Sunday of Ordinary Time Community Center News Volunteer Appreciation Looking for volunteers who would like to contribute one hour a month to our fellowship hour - otherwise known as "Coffee and Donuts." We need someone to cut the donuts the 3rd Sunday of the month. Two people make the task quicker, but it is often done by one. If you're willing please call Lisa Hatten at (503) 281-4429 ext. 16. Many thanks to Bev Logan and Angela Kremer, MACG Core Team members, who both worked many hours coordinating the MACG affordable housing assembly held in the community center last Thursday night. Attention Volunteers INCREASE OUR FAITH Today faith, faithfulness and due service are tied together. These are parts of the bargain between God and humankind. It is ordinary to do what you are supposed to do, witnessing to the Lord and relying on the power of God. Jesus did the same. Extraordinarily, God is relying on us to continue the work of the Messiah, bearing hardships for the sake of the Good News in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. We have something precious to look after and proclaim— the Holy Spirit living and working in us. Text, Philip J. Sandstrom, STD © 2001, OCP. All rights reserved. Philip served in the U.S. Army in World War II, becoming a priest in 1955. Daniel, the intellectual and theologian, ordained in 1952, complements his brother's activism, acquired in assignments to black parishes in New Orleans and Baltimore. In May 1968, the two brothers, along with seven other Catholic protesters, burned the records of the Catonsville, Maryland, draft board with homemade napalm. Their arrest, trial, and sentence to 3 years in prison propelled the Berrigan’s to national prominence. They helped found the Catholic resistance movement: estimates for draft board raids range from 53 to 250. In January 1971, the Nixon administration indicted the Berrigan’s and others for conspiracy, including bizarre charges of planning to kidnap Henry Kissinger and blow up heating tunnels in federal buildings in Washington, D.C. After sixty hours of deliberation, the jury could not reach a verdict, forcing the judge to declare a mistrial. The Berrigan brothers' radical antiwar activism reflected increased alienation from government and American society. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_ Berrigan and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Berrigan ORDINARY TIME This is the longest of the seasons of the church liturgical year. It is divided into two sections, the time following Advent and before the beginning of Lent, and the time following Pentecost and before the beginning of Advent. It could be called ordinary because it is not one of the high seasons of the church. But what the name really indicates is that the weeks are ordered by number or are ordinal. Jesus tells two parables of a master and servant. In the first, the master dons an apron in delight when he finds his servants ready and he waits on them. In the second, the master demands that the servants do what servants are required to do: wait on the master, serve his dinner, and continue with their duties. Although the stories appear to contradict each other, the two are in fact saying something vital about the blessings and woes. Blessed are those who are the servants of the kingdom, of the poor, and of God, for God will wait on them! And those of us, who think of ourselves as disciples of the Master must be ready, must be careful. Earth is for service, for plowing and tending the fields, and for worship. This is our duty as servants… (We) must not expect to be rewarded for doing what we are supposed to do. We must not expect God to wait on us because we are disciples, or even beloved children. God does wait on us, but only if we have learned to wait on the poor, on the kingdom of justice and mercy, and on those who are the presence of God most rejected in our midst. This paradox of servants and masters is central to Luke’s gospel. Jesus is the suffering servant of God, the master who waits on us, and we are disciples who follow our master’s ways, donning our aprons and bowing before those in need. It is an honor to serve those whom God serves and that is a blessing in itself. Megan McKenna, “Blessing and Woes” She is an author, theologian, storyteller, and lecturer.
