Deacon Edward and I are team teaching a Bible Study on this theme of Discipleship. The theme of each weekend's homily will lead into the topic of that week's bible study. More information on this study may be found on page 3 of the this bulletin. This weekend’s homily theme is The Foundation of Being a Disciple of Jesus. To create a culture of witness, we must live explicit lives of discipleship. Being a disciple is a challenge. Fortunately, one does not become a disciple of Christ on his or her own initiative. The work of the Holy Spirit within the Christian community forms the person as a disciple of Christ. One seeking to learn how to be a disciple of Christ does so through apprenticeship. Those seeking to return to the faith are seeking to live a life of discipleship, to follow in the footsteps of Christ. The parish must provide formed disciples who can accompany those who are returning to the Church and guide them throughout their journey. Apprenticeship “links an experienced Christian believer, or mentor, with one who seeks a deeper relationship with Christ and the Church.” Furthermore, this relationship is a “guided encounter with the entire Christian life, a journey toward conversion to Christ. It is a school for discipleship that promotes an authentic following of Christ based on the acceptance of one’s baptismal responsibilities, the internalization of the word of God, and the transformation of the whole person to ‘life in Christ.’” Apprenticeship is an essential element in witnessing to the Gospel message. ***************** Congratulations to our new St. Martin de Porres Catholic Daughters of America Court that began last Sunday. In one week a team on call for their rotational week had one of our neighbors needing help for rent due to loss of employment; she was embarrassed and very distressed trying to find work. We encouraged her & prayed together. As we left there were tears of gratitude. • Another family of 5 had increased medical bills & rent, so no money was left for utilities. She told us of problems with their home yet the rent went up so high they will have to find another place they can afford. A recently divorced single working mom couldn’t afford to • pay her utility bill and her ex-husband wasn’t helping much her son had special needs. We return calls from out of area callers who we refer to other SVdP conferences policies. Sometimes we can’t help if the caller received help in the last 6 months according to SVdP policy, however, we inform them of resources that may be able to help. We reassure those we help to know their personal information is kept in strict confidence. The Holy Spirit guides our visits and our words, and gives the grace we need. We are touched in a personal way when we visit our neighbors...we are blessed with gratitude, pleasant conversion, hope, spiritual joy and love. Pray for all our neighbors in need. • This Wednesday, Aug 23rd @7:00pm is our SVdP meeting in the Education Center. If you’d be interested in helping others, this ministry is for you. Join our meeting to learn more. The Walking with Purpose parish program at St. Martin de Porres is introducing a new session this fall: Touching the Divine. Touching the Divine focuses on the qualities of Jesus revealed through the Gospel of John. This study draws us into a deeper relationship with Jesus as we reflect on His personality. Knowing Christ more intimately will increase our love for Him. John referred to himself as “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” As we study, John will teach us how much Jesus loves us, and how His love is the true satisfaction of our souls. Walking with Purpose is a Catholic Bible study that aims to bring women to a deeper, personal relationship with Christ through personal study and small group discussions that link our everyday challenges with solutions given to us through the teachings of Christ and the Catholic Church. We will meet Thursdays from 6:30pm - 8:00pm beginning September 8. We welcome past participants and invite new women to join us! After I get started in this ministry please feel free to let me know if you think the caller got the wrong number.
