Buena suerte. MG Magazine 11 MIGUEL ORTIZ The New Mayor of Altea M iguel Ortiz, 48 years old. Has just been newly appointed Mayor of Altea. As he hasn’t got absolute majority he will have to make a pact with the other Groups to carry out his proposals. The interview pair, the deterioration is absolute. Our streets and rural roads are in very poor conditions, with obvious dangers to circulate for both vehicles and pedestrians.” I don’t know if you are aware of the sorry state that communicate with Marina Greenwich are in a sorry state. We want to know exactly the problems of the Alteanos, so we can serve them effectively and with responsibly. It is necessary that we study in Cleaning: “We are going to introduce a Rapid Response Team to meet the demands of the citizens” has taken place in the restaurant of the Yacht Club at the marina. We have come to discuss all the issues affecting Marina Greenwich and its surroundings. Problems that have been denounced years ago and still today are unresolved. He has gladly accepted our invitation and he is convinced that by listening many things can be solved. With this attitude he confirms what he has repeated in his electoral campaign on many occasions. “You cannot govern without counting on the people”. So without beating about the bush, let’s get on with the subject. Parking: “We are going to set up an alternative Parking Plan which will include the surroundings of Marina Greenwich” Firstly we would like to congratulate you on your recently appointed post. Congratulations! Mayor ……… Thank you very much. For me it is a great satisfaction that the people have given us a second opportunity, because it has always been our illusion to try to recuperate the confidence of the majority of the people of Altea. We have followed your Campaign with interest and many of the things you said that should be solved in Altea, precisely coincide with the problems that - as I said before- up to now nobody has solved. For example you are sorry that “our streets are still without reMG Magazine 12 of the accesses to the Marina, which are totally abandoned, unlit and without maintenance. Every time there is a storm the access is almost impossible, with the consequent danger that this implies. Do you know about this situation? And how do you think to solve this? From the Popular Party we consider that it is fundamental the adequacy of access to all our local infrastructures, and you are right, the roads detail all the shortcomings that you have commented, to try and resolve them in a realistic and effective manner, especially in cases like, the Marina, which directly affects our tourism. These words are also yours: “Unemployment and the economic crisis are the biggest problems, but in the day to day also are the cleanliness of our streets, the traffic and the dif- ficulty of finding a parking place. These deficiencies occupy a prior- going to adjudicate new contracts for cleaning services and waste col- bus stops, ramps and parking places for the disabled. This campaign has Public Transport: “It is fundamental the communication between the town of Altea and the Port of Marina Greenwich” ity in our effort and daily work “So then I would like to ask you several questions. How are you going to improve the rubbish collections? We are going to put into operation an ‘Emergency Plan’ to improve the cleaning because our aim is to intensify the cleanliness of our streets, squares, parks and walkways and improve the urban scene. We consider fundamental to guarantee the effectiveness and maintenance of this cleanliness, and for this we are lections, which will translate into a greater investment, in both technical, and human resources. Additionally, we are going to introduce a ‘Rapid Response Team’ to meet the demands of the citizens seeking immediate action of the municipal services so as to resolve those tiny everyday problems. And the traffic ordination of the municipal police? - To improve the traffic in our area clearly been an object to inform not to sanction, with the aim to guarantee that the circulation functions better. This initiative is another example that the Town Hall of Altea is going to work hard to solve the traffic problems, so that this effort will directly improve the quality of life in the daily lives of our citizens. And to help parking, we are going to set up an alternative plan of parking that includes the surroundings of Marina Greenwich. Beaches: “One of the main tasks of the Touristic Consell of Altea will be the maintenance and improvement of the service to the beaches and their cleanliness. we are going to launch a ‘Plan for Sustainable Mobility’, which includes measures to restrict private car use and promote the less polluting means of transport and the use of renewable energies. This plan includes measures such as restricting traffic in some areas, the redesign and introduction of public transport and lanes for bicycles, among other initiatives. We also want to improve the internal traffic through the execution of the Ronda Sur and Calle Cristo Health in Altea la Vella and the construction of two roundabouts, one for the intersection of Avenida Juan Alvado, with the Camí of the Pontet, and another between the Costera of the Gallo and the Costera of the Narices. More things, cars that park illegally. When we call the crane to tow the car away and it doesn’t show up, with the consequent disadvantage to the neighbors. Precisely we have just developed, from the Department of Traffic and Public Safety, a campaign of awareness and control of vehicles in improper parking places, which has influenced in a special way in areas such as sidewalks, pedestrian zones, Another problem is that being so close to the town of Altea, the only way to get to the marina and housing estates is by car. When will there be a bus line to link Marina Greenwich, Altea Hills, estates, hotels, golf and Altea? Like I said before, one of our priorities is to ensure access to all our infrastructures. And in this line we shall be directing all our actions. We need to be aware, amongst us all, the need to encourage and promote the use of public and collective transport and develop the projects that we consider necessary to achieve this goal. To boost the economic activity it’s essential to facilitate communication between the town of Altea and our urbanizations, as well as with the Marina. The fact that you have not achieved an absolute majority could that impede you from not meeting one hundred percent with the election promises? Our commitment to the 4.235 Alteanos who gave us their vote in the last elections is a firm pledge and MG Magazine 13 inescapable. We acquired with all our voters a commitment to put Altea functioning and get her back on the road to progress and well-being. Above all, the objective of the Popular Party of Altea before, during and after the elections is to achieve contentment for all the people of Altea, independently of what party politics they support. The project of the PP is the project of Altea, its present and its future, and our electoral program political parties, and that responsibility is the basis of a coherent policy that Altea needs to succeed. And finally, you said “The future of Altea is in tourism. For that we need to promote the services that will attract them.” The beaches are one of the fundamental pillars of our community. What are we going to do to maintain them? And on the other hand, the marinas that at- is recognized in both the Valencian Community, as in the rest of Spain. Recently we have received the Blue Flag for the beaches at Cap Blanch and La Roda, and in the coming weeks we will be collecting 6 flags of QUALITUR that precisely, credit and support that quality of our coast. As for the question you asked me about for quality tourism, one of the measures that we are already considering in our electoral program is to Tourism: “We will promote water activities, the improvement of port facilities, yacht clubs and sailing schools” is a program for people, made by and for the people. And I have no doubt at all that if we put on the table the electoral programs of the PP, of CIPAL and the BLOC; really there are more things that unite us than divide us. As I said in the Plenary of my investiture as Mayor, we have the obligation to reflect on the present and the future of Altea and for me it will be a guarantee to do it with people with the capacity, the formation and the integrity of Carolina Punset. The people of Altea, with their votes, made the message quite clear that they do not want absolute majorities. Although, with their votes, they also said that they wanted a consensus government led by the PP. And I’m convinced that from now on, we will begin a phase in which we will all seek consensus, because I firmly believe in the responsibility of all the MG Magazine 14 tract people of high purchasing power. What steps will you take so that Altea will be again a reference in this type of tourism? The good image of our beaches is, as you say, essential to our tourism. And because we know that tourism is the main driving force of our town, we’re going to create the ´Touristic Consell of Altea’, which will be composed of representatives of public and private sectors. And one of its main tasks will be to maintain and improve the service of our beaches and its cleaning. In addition, we are going to promote water activities, the improvement of port facilities, yacht clubs and sailing schools. In this regard, I wish that the Bay Marine Resort of Altea play a fundamental part. The beaches of Altea, with their pebbles, are one of our principal identities, and its quality create a ‘Quality Seal’, to which our commerce’s could benefit and also a ´Mark of Quality’ in Altea , which would clearly identify us compared to other destinations which could be our competence. All this, is with the clear objective to deepen the policies which will maintain our position as a tourist destination to promote our competitiveness. And since the interview is coming to a finish, we’re going to say goodbye to Miguel Ortiz reminding him some more of his words: “If the majority of the people in Altea begin again to confide in the PP we will recuperate their confidence, and confidence is demonstrated by facts.” Lord Mayor, the people of Altea have given their confidence, now they are only waiting for the facts. La niña y el delfín ©Arturo Pérez-Reverte XLSemanal, 28.08.2006 www.perezreverte.com MG Magazine 17 Arturo Pérez-Reverte The girl and the dolphin Isaid ’ve always said – jokingly, but I’ve it – dolphins and women, and the so and so´s of my generation are divided into two groups with relation to the sea: what we saw as children, The mermaid and the dolphin and what we didn’t see. But wait. Don’t make a mistake you fans of the ecological infant jam, because, despite the title, that was not exactly My friend Flipper. Just remember the first scene from the movie when Sofia Loren emerges from the Mediterranean, wrapped in a wet blouse shaping her powerful anatomy. And apart from that, the dolphin was not a living creature, but a roman bronze statue, ridden by a child, and that our Loren – I think was a sponge seeker, but perhaps I slipped a gear and it was Duel underneath the Sea – where they meet during a dive. And that wicked smarty, who, was Clifton Webb, and the goody – that’s what we say in Cartagena – Alan Ladd, who ends disputing, according to the classical rules, over the merchandise. In any case, the smile of that bronze dolphin was recorded in my memory, and is still present every time that I come across these lovable cetaceans. There is no other sailors joy, that I know, comparable to the voice of a crewman that sights them and shouts, “Dolphins!” And the immediate bustle of them around the boat, splashing through the water, breathing whilst swimming at astonishing speeds, stuck to the bow, where they turn on their sides and look up, aware, that in their extreme intelligence, the humans are enjoying and encouraging them, in one of the most beautiful animal shows of the world. But dolphins are also great when they do their own thing, oblivious to us. One of the most beautiful scenes, that I´ve ever encountered, MG Magazine 18 happened at sea a few miles north of Alboran, during a night with a magnificent full moon. The boat was sailing west with all the sails unfurled. I was on guard, and down in the cabin marking our position on the chart, I recall a strange noise called me onto the deck. And all around in that vast sea, rippled by a soft jaloque, there against the light, I saw hundreds of dolphins swimming and jumping in the horizon, with that silvery light reflecting off their backs and fins. Dining, I suppose, because the sea was also full of whiting, leaping everywhere, trying to escape. Such a huge concentration was due to a large fishing boat that had attracted several herds of them, all at the same time, and there they were, having a feast. I said the most beautiful scene, but not the tenderest. This happened about twelve years ago, on a calm day at sea, sailing by motor with the sails furled, in a blue cobalt Mediterranean with no clouds in sight. A herd of fifteen to twenty dolphins surrounded the boat. I stopped the engine and we were at the expective on the calm sea, amongst such friendly neighbours. At the aft of the boat was a little girl of ten, toasted by the sea and sunshine, a fearless youngster made for that, able to read, undauntedly, Treasure Island in her bunk at the bow even when the boat was hacking away with thirty five knots of wind. Suddenly we heard a plunge: the girl had gone and put some diving goggles on, and had dived into the water to be closer to the dolphins. Think about the shock to her father, sparing no time to drop the boarding ladder he went in behind her. Now, imagine the sea from down there, an immense blue, darkening in the depths, with the dolphins all around the hull of the boat. And at the stern, something submerged, of about a meter, grasping the ladder with a hand, a little naked girl in the luminous water, while the dolphins brushed pass her. Then a very young specimen who was swimming with its mother approached the girl, watching her with curiosity and almost motionless before her, only gently moving his tail and fins, with that peculiar smile that is indelibly imprinted on them. The dolphin and the girl looked at each other for a while even after she lifted her head above the water to breathe and submerge again. At last the girl reached out her hand slowly, stroking his nose. And while the girl’s father swam cautiously, keeping a distance but watching the scene, the mother of the little dolphin was also behind, at the back of his tail, without intervening, just watching her small one. I have to say now that the girl is twenty-three and would kill for a dolphin. Her father would also. My two great passions are the sea and diving. There are a lot of things that we know about Bertin, but possibly there´s not many people who know about your two favorite hobbies, one is diving isn´t it? Let’s talk about your professional life. Which of these roles is more you: Singer, Presenter or Actor? There is an American word “showman”. I’ll stay with all of them, although I don’t consider myself an actor, what happens is for me it’s better to know how to do everything, I’ve got my hobbies and I’m a good all-rounder, I’m good at many things but not the best in anything, that’s constant in my life. What’s left for you to do or would like to do, that you haven’t done yet? If I tell the truth I have always done what I wanted, if I haven’t done it it’s because I didn’t want to. Maybe I’d like to go to Canada with a snowmobile and see the bears in their natural state and enjoy Canada’s forests. In your forays into the business world, you began with “Bertin´s oil”, and then came other products. When are you going to stop? At first it seemed crazy, after, a fantastic idea and now it is a part of my life. I started first with the oil, then the gazpacho, the soups, and now biscuits and tomorrow there will be others. Currently there are 17 products MG Magazine 36 Apart from this with Arévalo, what other short term projects to you have? I’m still doing TV every Sunday, although we’ve stopped now for the summer, and I’ll be returning in September with a Little Bit of Sand with Intereconomía. I’ve also got from now until December a lot of concerts, I don’t have a free weekend, which means I’ve got a lot of work up to the end of the year and in this time of crisis I’m really happy. And now you’re currently playing, together with Arévalo, the play called Twins. How’s the box office going? I’m half horse, half man and half dolphin. It is without a doubt, and I don’t give a damn the false immodesty, the funniest play you can see at this moment. We will be in Alicante in September, and I recommend the people go and see it, because they come out not crying but screaming with laughter. A compromising situation at sea: A spectacular storm, the only boat that crossed at that time from Marina Smir in Morocco to Sotogrande. Not even the ferries passed. What is life? It is unique and unrepeatable. It’s something we have to make the most of. How would you like to see yourself in the future? Going around the world in a boat. Me quedé, nunca mejor dicho, helado. No me hizo ninguna gracia. El sacerdote me contestó que en el viaje de regreso se habían encontrado con vientos de 55 nudos y olas de 14 MG Magazine 42 THE LONG VOYAGE OF THE SCHOONER IDES OF MARCH TO THE ANTARCTICA (I) By Alfonso Jordan A lmost 30 years ago, the Ides of March left the port of Gijon direction to the Great South, which was the first Spanish Scientific Expedition to the Antarctica. That trip marked the most documentary and informative with his boat a couple of years before and wanted to involve Spain in the future of the Antarctica. William knew that Javier Babé and Santiago Cañedo were building a schooner of 32 meters in length with ing the phone rang in my office: “Hi Alfonso, I’m Javier Babé, do you want to come to the Antarctica?” Well, I was frozen to the spot, Javier was a good friend that I had met three years earlier in the Caribbean. It took me a few seconds to react. And my answer was “Of course. Thank you very much for considering me Javier“. Ten days later we were reunited with William in a hotel in Palma of Mallorca, planning the first steps of the project. Cryns wanted a scientific expedition with the attractiveness of a sailing trip. In short, a great sea and scientific adventure. A few weeks later we constituted the Spanish Association in the Antarctica which was the entity responsible for organizing, coordinating and sponsoring the project, under the honorary presidency of the King of Spain. The Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) decided to implicate themselves fully in the project, becoming the scientific advisory body of the Spanish Association in the Antarctica. The different parts of the project began to fit. William wanted that expedition and the funding was secured from the first day. Although not everything was going to be easy: in the final phase of constructing the schooner, which logically, was adapted to the best suited type of navigation that we were going to do, the naval authorities at that time made all sorts of problems to hand over the papers of the ‘Ides of March”. The Ides of March, an impressive boat task ever undertaken in Spain about the existence of the frozen continent. How the project was conceived The initiative for the project came from William Cryns who had already gone through the frozen continent three masts and that they were going to dedicate to charter it in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean and he thought it was the ideal boat to undertake a trip of that nature. In March 1982 I was chief editor of the magazine “Bitácora”. One morn- What a great boat. It was built of steel and coated with GRP. I remember the stern lounge with seats in a semicircle and the deckhouse with a living room, where every day we had breakfast, we ate and dined up to 27 people. Accustomed to the boats which I had sailed on up to that time, MG Magazine 43 this one seemed like an ocean liner. The rig was perhaps the most significant. Its criterion was maximum sail gearing so as to count on a reduced crew, as originally the boat was going to dedicate to charter. Her normal rig for winds on a close The sail area was huge, with foresails between masts that gave us a lot of power when reaching. I remember a huge steering wheel. It was fantastic to govern the Ides from the helm. The “Ides of March” reached its full If, as a result of the bureaucratic problems we set sail with a two month delay, the failure of one of the two engines of the Ides was almost the final blow. We had to stopover in Dakar (Senegal), Recife and Rio (Brazil) and Mar del Plata (Argentina) to try to hauled leg was seven sails. The fisherman sail stood out, a sort of knife shaped inverted roller mainsail, which was complimented with a staysail. Together the two sails made a sort of square sail. I honestly was delighted because each stop was an opportunity to see something and have some fun, while we approached the southern latitudes. But the fact is that the expedition was almost cancelled. MG Magazine 44 The departure From Gijon to Punta Arenas in Chile. More than 15,000 miles of sailing We put in at Vigo, Las Palmas of Gran Canaria, Santa Cruz of Tenerife, Dakar in Senegal, Recife and Rio of Janeiro in Brazil, Mar del Plata in tic we did that between Dakar and Recife and that is the shortest of the Atlantic crossings I have made. Until then the sailing ran without problems. The organization on board was merchant navy style. There was a Captain Javier Babé, a first officer, Santiago Cañedo, god rest in peace, a second officer, Fernando and a boatswain, Xurxo, who is a great marine and sailor. And there was also a chef, Josu. A very nice Basque who worked like a black but was whiter than an aspirin because he spent When I disconnected the harness from the boom to attach myself to the lifeline on deck to return to the interior of the boat, I heard the roar of a wave breaking. At that time I wasn’t attached. I only remember that a mass of water smashed me against the staysail boom. Without that boom I would have gone over board and everything would have been over. It was impossible to rescue a man overboard with 70 knots of wind, no visibility and a single motor in a schooner of 32 meters. I didn’t see Sotero until later on inside The Ides of March was a schooner of 32 meters in length with three masts Argentina and Punta Arenas in Chile, where the members of the expedition came on board and the expedition officially began. To the Canary Islands we sailed with low pressure and cool winds. Then came the Aliseo. Crossing the Atlan- the whole day working in the “basement” of the boat and had no time for anything. From Punta Arenas to Recife the captain gave us permission to have a day off once a week and that day we covered my sister Belen, who sailed from Recife to Punta Arenas, although the gastronomic level inevitably dropped a little. The first big problem we had was in the Gulf of Santa Catalina in the south of Rio of Janeiro. Some of the crew took the opportunity to take a fresh water shower. I was not amused. I remember it well. The appearance of the sky was threatening. With some of the crew finishing off, the shower turned into a storm and shortly afterwards into a heavy storm. The wind was blowing 65-70 knots. We had hauled down all the sails but the last piece of Genoa was impossible to furl in as the forestay was taking such a beating. You should have seen the clew! It was ripping the reinforcement cloth away like it was peeling onions! Javier shouted “two crew with harness to go to the bow!” the boom. The aim was to turn by hand the furling drum to finally get the Genoa in. After quite a while, in complete darkness, Sotero and I managed to turn the drum and the sail was finally furled. the boat breathing with difficulty. The next day, when I coughed my chest hurt and I had no strength. When we arrived at Mar del Plata I went to see a doctor and there I was told I had three cracked ribs, only for the pressure of the breaking wave on my back! That day I was reborn. Another unforgettable memory was arriving at Mar del Plata. It was night and there must have been force 5-6 the sea was full of white foam illuminated by plankton. It seemed as if the whole sea was illuminated by little green lights. On February 20th, 1982, we had arrived at Punta Arenas on the Strait of Magellan in the Tierra del Fuego and finally the journey began to the Antarctica. I’ll never forget that stay either in Punta Arenas. It coincided with a visit by General Pinochet! Heading towards the Antarctica In the southern latitudes, late February is almost the beginning of winter. The most logical would have been to suspend the trip, but, fortunately, it was not. But what was suspended was the scientific program we had prepared. The decision was made jointly by the Spanish Association in the Antarctica and the Spanish Institute of Ocean MG Magazine 45 ography. So the scientific program was cancelled whose goals had already been communicated to the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR). There were opinions for everyone’s taste but the reality was that there was no time. The weather conditions, the borders of the ice situation and all the reports that we received in those days discouraged the development of the scientific program. And all that had been mounted at Las Palmas in Punta Arenas was removed, without having used it even a second. In fact when we entered the Ant- From Punta Arenas to the Ides of March travelled at a high speed as if it were stuck fast to the Antarctica The journey through the channels of the Tierra del Fuego everybody thought was exceptional. High snow-capped mountains, dense vegetation that seemed impenetrable, secluded coves where the water is like a mirror, majestic glaciers. Overall, a wonderful landscape with no evidence of human presence, only nature, probably without major variations than five centuries ago when Magellan and his crew found it. Regarding the navigation, strong currents, channeled winds coming down the valley and the frequent Pacific Ocean. The choice proved it was the ideal sailing ship and indeed, some Antarctic research vessels such as the American Hero, even though power-driven vessels, had built a mast and a set of sails with propulsive purposes, but above all they had stabilizers that allowed to navigate through the Drake passage while others rode out the storm. On March 4th, the almost unattainable dream finally became reality. The first frozen landscapes appeared before us, dotted with the characteristic animals of the Antarctic wildlife. With 70 knots of wind, the clew was ripping away the reinforcement cloth like it was peeling an onion arctic Circle we met up with several ships of Antarctic research, five times larger than the Ides of March and already returning to Ushuaia in the Tierra del Fuego, after finalizing their scientific activities for the season. The only advantage was to navigate on perfectly calm channels, even when the furious winds turned the water into a white surface. For this concept of a gigantic ark, Remivov has counted on the help of the Russian academic scientific, Britvin Lev, known for devising energy solutions for space stations. The project in question is a futuristic and ecological building designed to withstand all types of earthquakes, floods and natural disasters. It is presented as a bioclimatic building that could save humanity from the fatal consequences of climate change. The Ark is a dome shaped building with a central bearing in the form of a tube where all the engineering communications pass through. Connected at the top of the central unit are the wind turbines and the generators for the tornado. In the basement heat pumps and thermal converters that use the earth’s heat to generate electricity, designed with a fully-integrated renewable energy system which provides an uninterrupted energy supply. This The structural solidity is provided by compression behavior of the wooden support arches and tension of the steel cables. The framework is covered by a special foil of Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene, which is a strong, highly transparent plastic, self-cleaning, recyclable, more durable, economical and lighter than glass. The Ark is also a greenhouse, and that is the next step in creating a bioclimatic building. All the different plant species are chosen according to the principles of compatibility, illumination and efficiency of oxygen production, as well as to create healthy, comfortable and attractive areas for human living. Through the transparent roof, the light that enters the interior of the building will be enough to grow plants and to illuminate the interior rooms. A prefabricated building designed to be built on any surface, in different climatic areas and in seismically dangerous regions. It can be constructed in three to four months and serve as an emergency shelter in case of a disaster. Floats on water, resists the onslaught of strong waves and would have everything needed to survive. And while this may sound like science fiction, after the earthquake in Japan, perhaps this project could be a reality in the not too distant future. It will be able to float on the water and will count on everything to be self supported. design permits an optimal relationship between the volume of the building and its outer surface, which provides a substantial saving of materials and produces effective energy usage. The construction size is 40 x 60 meters on the ground plan, the height of the superstructure is 30 meters and the total area is 14,000 m2, where up to 10,000 people could live in it. The dome design helps to store the warm air in the upper part, and this heat is collected in seasonal heat accumulators and in electric and hydrogen accumulators in order to provide uninterrupted power supply for the entire complex, regardless of the external environmental conditions. All waste generated inside the building, can be processed by boiling and oxygen free pyrolysis methods, and serve to generate energy or be turned into bio-fertilizers. He started sailing in his youth, with the fishermen of the Gulf of Siam, and later sailed as skipper on the legendary South Seas. He has been one of the illustrious characters who has contributed to the history of ocean sailing, and is one of the icons of a generation of lovers of sailing. From the first solo circumnavigation, carried out successfully by Captain Joshua Slocum, in 1895-1898, many other sailors have undertaken the feat. In fact Moitessier named his boat “Joshua”, in honor of Joshua Slocum. A recent story tells how in March 1968 the Sunday Times of London created the “Golden Globe Race” trophy, with a prize of £5,000 for the first sailor who could sail alone, non-stop around the world. The paper also established another prize of £5,000 for who could do it in the least time. The amount of the prizes were sufficient enough to attract nine intrepid sail- tant and a radio. But during the race the participants were gradually abandoning. One committed suicide after Race. In his book The Long Journey he tells how he lived this trip. It was an ascetic experience: a man alone at sea, away from the world, and with the decision to head to the Polynesia, renouncing victory and thus becoming a true spiritual father of the navigators a solo. His death in France in He named his boat “Joshua”, in honor of Joshua of Slocum having sailed in a circle around the South Atlantic, another, Nigel Tetley, aboard the only trimaran, was forced to retire when his boat was destroyed after rounding Cape Horn. And the Frenchman Bernard Moitessier, when he was ahead of all the fleet, victory in hand and after rounding Cape Horn, suddenly pulled out of the race choosing to turn around, convinced that this move was necessary to save his soul, to continue his “long way” and live his dream of freedom. With not much help from his few navigational instruments, he chose a new route and made his way to Tahiti, with the help from his sextant he became more than an expert. Later on he sent out this famous message which said: “I have no desire to return to Europe with all its false gods. They eat your liver out and suck your marrow and brutalize you. I am going where you can tie up a boat where you want and the sun is free, and so is the air you breathe and the sea where you swim and you can roast yourself on a coral reef. I’m going on without stopping to the Pacific Islands, because I am happy in the sea, and perhaps also to save my soul”. Moitessier is considered an example to follow in the sailing world, having renounced the glory and the money of the Golden Globe 1996, has marked a before and after in the world of sailing. Dr. S. Giménez Artieda SUNSTROKE AND HEAT STROKE S unstroke is milder than heat stroke, and occurs more frequently in children, also athletes that are not acclimatized and elderly people treated with diuretics. Symptoms include weakness, dizziness, nausea, uncoordinated movements, agitation and confusion. The patient is pale and sweaty but has no fever. They always recover after a rest in a cool place, replacing salts and fluid (fresh water). A Heat Stroke is less common than sunstroke, but much more serious, it’s a true medical emergency and requires the immediate transfer of the patient to a suitable hospital or clinic. It usually occurs with untrained athletes who perform strenuous exercises in hot and humid environments (active heat stroke or by exercise) or the elderly or ill during “heat waves” (passive or classic heat stroke). With Heat Stroke there is an important altered state of consciousness with a high fever of up to 40 ºC or more, with no sweating, but the skin is hot and dry. If you suspect a heat stroke, for the aforementioned symptoms, the most important thing to do is urgently make arrangements to transfer the patient. Meanwhile, we can proceed to undress the patient and lie him down in the coolest place possible and try to cool him by applying damp cloths or cold water directly onto the skin, if possible near to a fan or current of air in the foetal position so the cooling down is more effective. To improve the venous return it is good to massage the legs in an upward direction from the feet to his knees. Without other means, there is not much more that we can do, so after going through all the previous steps, if the rectal temperature does not lower more than 39 ºC, put the patient in a bath with ice cold water. As always, prevention is better than the cure and in the summer time we should avoid long exposures in the sun, don’t do physical exercises that you haven’t been trained for and if you sweat too much or take diuretics, replenish with fluids and salt. T here are many stories about mermaids that come from ancient times. They were and still are famous creatures from mythology, whose extraordinary beauty, seduced men with their beautiful voices and guided them to their doom. They are described as beautiful women with long flowing hair, human torsos with the tail of a fish, able to enchant with the sweetness of their songs. In Greek mythology a legend tells of three sisters who were faithful companions to Persephone, daughter of Zeus, who was abducted by Hades and as punishment for not having taken care of her daughter, the goddess Demeter, Persephone’s mother, turned them into hybrid creatures. Enigmatic beings, who are part of many popular cultures in many small towns today. The first published data speaks of appearances in Assyria around 1000 BC. It is said that they lived on the island of Artemis, where the remains of drowned sailors rest, lured by their enchanting songs. Mermaids if they wanted to could go up river and they could be found in freshwater lakes, far from the sea. They also had great knowledge about herbs as well as prophetic powers. In Homer’s Odyssey, it is said that Ulysses covered the ears of his crew with wax and had himself firmly bound to the mast so that he could hear their songs without danger. There is a beautiful story about a young man sat on a rock crying over the grave illness of his beloved. A mermaid hearing his laments, suddenly appears and feeling sorry for his grief, with a sweet and invigorating voice sings: “Will you let your beautiful beloved die in your arms, and the sagebrush flourish in the fields?” The young man runs off to find the flower of the sagebrush; he picks it and squeezes the juice which he gives to his beautiful loved one, who is immediately healed. They both bless the mermaid who has brought back the young girls health, thanks to her knowledge. For the many wishes that they could grant and for the wisdom that they could give, sometimes they were often captured and forced to pay a ransom for their release. But most of the time their appearances meant unlucky omens, a sign of an approaching storm or a shipwreck. So, whether you believe or not, legends of mermaids have remained alive throughout the ages and still continue to haunt the imagination of sailors. T here was a strong belief that flowers were for funerals, and these elements on board were as unwelcomed as were women, priests, whistles and umbrellas. The crews on board today’s submarines still maintain these beliefs. U mbrellas for their nature have always been associated with bad weather. So the sailors did not want to invoke the meteorological elements. An umbrella on board could provoke the gods, who would return with all their anger against the boat. I t was customary to paint an eye on each side of the bow of the boat, so they could “see” where they were going. Even today you can see fishing boats with this motif. In English these motifs are commonly referred to as “Her eyes” and probably for this expression, in English, boats are always considered to be of a feminine gender. En el próximo número, seguiremos aconsejándoles y recordándoles todo aquello que es importante y necesario hacer para conseguir que su barco se conserve siempre en perfecto estado. t i p s f r o m t h e d r y d o c k Winter storage: a good option e are now in the months of summer, when we are going to enjoy our boat to the maximum and probably navigate more hours. A tip that we can give you from the Dry Dock which we think could be of help, is that you make a list of all the incidents that start occurring and all those little discomforts that start to arise during these days at sea. This way nothing is forgotten and you can avoid season after season the same problems repeating themselves. Besides, later on, during the months of inactivity, you can request quotes and do the necessary jobs so that the boat is ready again for summer. Don’t do what is usually the case and try to repair the boat at the last moment when the high season has started and the time has crept up, obliging you to sacrifice those perfect days of navigation. Once the summer has passed we should start to think about how to protect our boat from the winter weather elements, when the winter storms occur and where the boats are at the mercy of climatical changes, suffering many damages, sometimes expensive to repair. If you haven’t thought about it yet, we offer the possibility to hibernate your boat for the winter in our Dry Dock. It is a very interesting option for the reasons that we are going to explain and which will probably make you think about it for the next time. The first is to minimize the potential damage that your vessel may suffer during the winter storms: tied up between two boats usually produces friction with the neighbors, damages to the lifelines, balconies and stanchions of stainless steel and damage to the aluminum gunwales and countless other possible faults. This damage obviously does not occur in the Dry Dock. Another reason are the annual maintenance costs which can be greatly reduced, since, for example, the change of anodes, especially for boats with tails, can be reduced to the half, replacing them every two years instead of annually. The same can occur with antifouling, which should be continued annually, but with the difference that only a single coat would be more than sufficient for most cases. Also worthy to mention is the fact that a fiberglass boat that passes four to six months out of the water annually is almost never affected by the dreaded osmosis. Whether you decide to hibernate your boat in dry or not, there are a number of important points to take into account especially if you are going to leave the boat alone several months, so as to avoid premature deterioration of the many components of the vessel, check for example: Winter storage of engines and group generator, battery fully charged and disconnection of terminals, full fuel tank to prevent condensation, taps closed and properly greased and a long list of other points to check. In the next issue, we will be advising and giving reminders to all what is important and necessary to keep your boat always in a perfect state of condition.
