FARJAMI
Hossein Farjami has long been one of the most respected and best-loved Iranian
musicians. He combines natural talent with rigorous discipline, musicianship with
professional ethics. Born in Teheran, Iran, in 1944, he started his musical studies at
the age of 13, and his life has been devoted to music ever since. For the past 33 years
he has been based in London, where he has achieved a high reputation,
not only
among the large Iranian community living in the West, but throughout
the Middle
East.
Over the years Hossein Farjami has expanded the range of his musical knowledge
beyond the confines of Iranian music - classical, popular and folk - to cover the
whole field of Middle Eastern music in all its diversity. His technical skills as an
instrumentalist
have similarly developed, but they are a means to an end: the expression of deep emotion and subtle meaning. His basic instrument is the s a n t o o r , a relative of the European dulcimer and zither, but he plays several others, in particular
the u d (lute) and a variety of Middle Eastern drums. Many years ago dissatisfied
with the instruments he could find on the market, he began to make his own, since
then his reputation as a maker of these instruments has spread, and the products of
his workshop are much in demand all over the Middle East. His innovations in the
design of santoor have enhanced its range and flexibility, enabling it to move over
several keys without having to re-tune, as is usually the case. This unique contribution to the field of Oriental music is perhaps his most lasting achievement, though
Farjami, like all authentic artists, is too modest to claim merit.
Anxious to pass on his skills and experiences to the next generation, Farjami is also
an inspiring teacher, at once patient and rigorous. Apart from santoor, ud and percussion he teaches classical Iranian singing and musical theory, while finding time
for composition, arrangement and recording.
The present CD is dedicated to Iranian traditional Folk Music. Of the eight tracks,
three are medleys of popular folk songs which Farjami combines imaginatively. The
others are all traditional folk songs, from various regions of Iran. Their simple, soulful melodies are rich in emotional nuances which Farjami conveys with his subtle
arrangements and masterly playing. Omitting the lyrics of the songs, he has replaced
their melodic lines with the santoor. Like all genuine folk music these tunes have a
universal appeal - to the heart, which is our natural home.
THE INSTRUMENTS
SANTOOR
The santoor is one of the oldest instruments in the world, originating in the Middle
East. It is among the simplest stringed instruments,
belonging to the category of
zithers. The strings are struck with two hammers, called m e s r a b s . The name s a n t o o r
first appeared in an 11th century poem by the Iranian M a n u c h e r i . The instrument
itself was not depicted until the 13th century where we find it in a drawing. The wall

depict the santoor, It is also found in later paintings and photographs from the Q a s a r

Rhythm is an essential part of all music and in many regions of the Middle Eastern
world it is attaining a high level of subtlety and sophistication.

t o n b a k is the most well-known
and widely used drum used in Iranian classical
music. The t o n b a k is carved from wood, its body is hollow, open at the lower end
and covered with a goat or calf skin membrane at the wider upper end. A t o n b a k
player holds the drum diagonally across his lap, playing with the fingers of both
hands.
The
daf
is a circular wooden
frame, narrow
in its width and covered with a goat or
calf skin. Although not part of the original instrument, cymbals or metal rings were
later inserted into the frame. The d a f is held upright in both hands in front of the
musician and is played with the fingers of both hands.

of the major instruments in Iran. It is also played in many different countries with

The santoor is a shallow box in the form of a regular trapezoid, the longer strings are
closest to the player. The strings produce higher notes as they decrease in length and
increase in tension. The santo or normally has a range of 3 octaves. The lowest octave
is on the right, the middle octave in the centre and the highest octave on the left side.

der Welt aus dem nahen Osten. Sie ist
eines der einfachsten Saiteninstrumente
und gehort zu der Familie der Zithern, Die
Saiten werden mit Hamrnern, " M e s r a b s " , angeschlagen. Der Name S a n t o o r tauchte
zum ersten Mal in einem iranischen Gedicht von M a n u c h e r i im 11. J ahrhundert auf.
Das Instrument selbst wurde erst im 13. Jahrhundert
in einer Zeichnung abgebildet.

Hossein Farjami ha sido desde hace mucho tiempo uno de los rmisicos iranies mas
respetados y apreciados. Combina el talento natural con una rigurosa disciplina, la
maestria musical con la etica protesional. Nacido en Teheran (Iran), en 1944, comen-
que vive en Occidente, sino en todo el Oriente Medio.
Con el paso de los afios, Hossein Farjami ha expandido la frontera de su conocimiento musical mas alla de los limites de la rmisica irani (clasica, popular y folklorica), para cubrir todo el campo de la musica de Oriente Medio en toda su diversidad.
Sus habilidades tecnicas como instrumentista
han evolucionado
de manera similar,
pero son un medio para conseguir una finalidad: la expresion de una profunda emocion y un significado suti!. Su instrumento
basico es el santoor, de la familia del dulcernele y la citara europeos, pero toea otros instrumentos,
en especial el u d (laud), y
una variedad de tambores del Oriente Medio. Hace muchos afios, no satisfecho con
los instrumentos
que pudo encontrar en el mercado, empezo a hacer el suyo propio;
mos en un dibujo.

de instrumentos
desde entonces su reputaci6n como fabricante de estos instrumentos
se ha esparcido, y los productos de su taller de trabajo estan en gran demanda por todo Oriente
Medio. Sus innovaciones en el disefio del santoor han mejorado su extensi6n y flexibilidad, perrnitiendole cambiar a varias tonalidades diferentes sin necesidad de volver a afinarlo, 10 cual es normalmente
necesario. Esta contribuci6n

musicales S a f a u a d tambien aparece el santoor. Tarnbien se encuentra en cuadros y
fotografias posteriores del periodo Q a s a r . En el siglo XX el santoor ha adquirido
mucha popularidad y ya es uno de los principales instrumentos

que encuentra tiernpo para la composici6n, adaptaciones y grabaciones.
EI presente CD esta dedicado a la rmisica folkl6rica tradicional iran!' De las ocho
EI santoor es una caja arm6nica poco profunda en forma de trapezoide regular, las
cuerdas mas largas estan mas cerca al rmisico. Las cuerdas producen notas mas altas
segun reducen en longitud y aumentan en tensi6n. EI santoor normalmente tiene una
canciones, tres son popurris de canciones folkl6ricas populares que Farjami combina imaginativamente.
Las otras son todas canciones folkl6ricas tradicionales
de
varias regiones de Iran. Sus melodias simples y conmovedoras
son ricas en matices
emocionales, que Farjami trans mite con sus adaptaciones sutiles y su magistral interpretaci6n. Ha omitido la letra de las canciones, y ha reemplazado sus lineas mel6dicas con el santoor. Como toda rmisica folkl6rica genuina, estas melodias tienen un
encanto universal: directas al coraz6n, que es nuestra cas a natural.
