A Mother’s Day Reflection
Today is Mother’s Day in the U.S., and similar holidays are celebrated in most countries.
After all, what theme is more universal than the importance of motherhood? We Catholics
prize that nurturing relationship so highly that we call our church, “Holy Mother,” and we
venerate Mary, the mother of Jesus, for her pivotal role in the life of the savior.
Yet, Mother’s Day can bring with it a plethora of emotion and memories. Any mother can
attest to the difficulty and challenge of the task of parenting. And mothers come in all
shapes and sizes. Some mothers are birth mothers, some are adoptive. Some mothers are
the grandmas or aunts who raised us. Some mothers left us far too soon, and no matter
when they leave, they always leave us orphans. Some mothers are the people we rebelled
against; some mothers are the women we idolized. Most often, our mothers were probably
both. It’s a complex relationship, this parenting. As Christian stewards, many of us are mothers, but all of us are
sons and daughters.
During May, we honor and remember not just our own moms, but Mary, the Mother of God. We see her as the great
symbol of motherhood and as our role model. At her knee, Jesus learned his prayers and the faith of his ancestors.
At her hearth, Jesus grew in wisdom and grace and developed his sense of manhood and destiny. Mothers should
resist comparing themselves to Mary. It’s tough enough being a mom without setting the barrier that high. But we
all should ask Mary’s intercession, so that in our endeavors to be good stewards and to raise good stewards, to
nurture in the faith those entrusted to us, she might come to our assistance and guide us with her motherly
understanding. And on Mother’s Day, we ask Mary to bless all mothers, especially our own.
(catholicstewardship.com)
MOTHER’S DAY BLESSING
The following blessing may take place at the family dinner.
~BLESSING GESTURE~
All may extend their hands over the mother as the leader prays:
Loving God,
we pray for (name) and for all who rejoice in motherhood.
We thank you for her life and for her giving life to us.
We bless you for her gentleness, love, and dedication.
Bless her with joy and love all her days.
May she, like all the holy women and Mary, the mother of Jesus,
find joy in God our Savior.
We pray this through Christ, our Lord.
All: Amen
All share in the meal together. Family members may share gifts, flowers, and cards with their mother.

SERIES: HUMAN TRAFFICKING
What is Child Trafficking?
The Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000
(TVPA) defines “severe forms of human trafficking”
as the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for:
Sex trafficking in which a commercial sex act is
induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the
person induced to perform such act has not attained 18
years of age; or
Labor or services, through the use of force, fraud, or
coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary
servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery.
Coercion includes threats of physical or psychological harm
to children and/or their families. Human trafficking happens
“anytime and anywhere”, impacting more than 12 million
children and adults, according to the 2010 U.S. Department
of State Trafficking in Persons Report. The International
Labour Organization and United Nations Children’s Fund
(UNICEF) estimate that 1.2 million of these victims are
under the age of 18. When children are trafficked, their
right to develop in a nurturing and loving environment is
stolen from them. Their right to be free and protected from
sexual, physical, and emotional abuse is also taken from
them. At times, individuals whom they perceive as their
protectors and caregivers are the individuals that prey on
them, including peers, community and family connections,
pimps, family members or organized labor groups. Protecting children from this horrendous reality starts with awareness.
