AUGUST 16, 2015
After eight years of tremendous service as the
Director of Youth Ministry, Billy Griffith has
accepted a position to work with Fr. Roger
Arnsparger in the Education Vicariate for the
Diocese of Charlotte. Please join me in thanking
Billy for his dedicated ministry to the youth of our parish. Elizabeth
Queen will serve as Interim Youth Minister until a permanent
Youth Minister is identified and hired. Nan Lacy will be taking
over the duties of business administration for our parish
effective August 24. Many thanks to Dustie Gimblet for serving
our parish in that position for the past year. We removed four
handicapped parking spaces from the main parking lot because
they were on a slope that exceeded the state regulations. These
handicapped spaces have been relocated to the parking lot on
th
9 Street adjacent to the building. We now have eight handicapped
th
spaces in the 9 Street parking lot with elevator access to the
church. Our Hispanic community will be selling tamales and
sopes tortillas after the 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM Masses on
Sunday, August 23 to support their Fall youth retreat.
– Sincerely Yours in Christ
Fr. Larry LoMonaco

TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
CCM AUGUST FOOD DRIVE
Since CCM can purchase 3-4 times as much food through their
wholesalers at the same cost as we can buy retail, you also
have the option to give a monetary donation to CCM either with or
instead of your usual food donation. Should you choose to give
monetarily, this should in no way cut into your weekly tithing to the
church, but should be in addition to it, just as it would be if you
bought extra food to donate. You may take a pre-addressed
envelope from the hallway table on your way out to assist in your
giving. You will need to mail them, please. Checks are to be made
out to either “GHCCM” or “Greater Hickory Cooperative Christian
Ministry”, with “Food Pantry” on the Memo/For line. If you prefer to
give food items, please remember healthy non-perishable
canned, bagged, boxed and bottled foods placed in the rolling
bin under the table across from the restrooms.
XX DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO

CURSILLO/DECOLORES
Cursillo men’s and women’s small group meetings are starting
again at St. Aloysius. We meet weekly for an hour to pray, share
our faith with each other, share what spiritual sources we are
reading and encourage each other to share our beautiful Catholic
faith with members of our families, friends and co-workers. This is
an invitation for any man or woman in the parish. No previous
experience necessary! For more information, please contact:
(Men’s small group): Mark Welsh at [email protected]
or

[email protected] 225-444-2689.
FLIP FLOP DRIVE
Our annual flip flop drive is coming up next month September. It is not too soon to begin collecting children's flip
flops in anticipation of the drive. Please store them in your homes
until then. The flip flops will be taken to Haiti for distribution via the
Sisters of Mercy in Asheville. They deliver them 3-4 times per year
to 11 sites and 15 orphanages. Many of these people in Haiti only
eat every other day and children have never owned shoes or
underwear etc. The situation is still desperate. Thank you!
REDUCING POVERTY
St. Aloysius will be providing a meal for the NETworX program
st
on September 21 . NETworX is a program to remove 15 families
out of poverty over a three month cycle. We will be feeding 75
people at First Presbyterian Church that evening, and we need
volunteers to prepare/cook the food at St. Al's; setup, serve,
clean up, and provide childcare/tutoring at First Presbyterian;
and finally wash the dirty dishes back at St. Al's. We'll be using
paperware as much as possible to minimize the dishwashing.
Please contact Dave Gerhardt at [email protected], 828-3284748 or 828-261-6821 to volunteer or for more information.
BAPTISMS
Congratulations to Filbert and Maria Petiluna, whose daughter,
Keira Angela Petiluna was baptized Saturday. Also baptized was
Ella Mae Petiluna, daughter of Basil and Chastity Parker Petiluna
and Ethan Lawrence Te, son of Lawrence and Linah Kwan Te.
CHURCH HUMOR!
The teacher asked her Sunday School class to draw pictures of
their favorite Bible stories. She was puzzled by Kyle’s picture
showing four people in an airplane. Kyle explained that it showed,
“The Flight to Egypt.” Pointing to each figure the teacher said, “That
must be Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus. But who is the fourth
person?” Kyle replied, “Oh, that’s Pontius, the pilot!”
¡Vengan a celebrar!
Jesucristo.”

PERPETUAL ADORATION
The immeasurable sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ, dying on the
cross to save the world, cannot compare. How can we give back a
little? We can be one of God’s prayer warriors at the Adoration
Chapel, spending one holy hour a week. If you feel you are
being called, please contact Dave or Melanie King at 828-638-0462
or email [email protected] or sign up at the parish website,
http://www.staloysiushickory.org/parishioners/forms. There is an
immediate need for Adorers for the following hours: Mondays 2AM3AM and Thursdays 2AM-3AM. Thank you!
ADULT MISSION TRIP
You are invited to join a handful of faith filled Adults traveling
to Philly, PA for a week of work at St. Francis Inn, a Kensington
neighborhood soup kitchen run by Franciscans on November 15 –
20, 2015. We rise early for Daily Mass and work hard all day (with
breaks for lunch, and hopefully afternoon, before serving the guests
dinner.) There are upwards of 400+ guests coming each day for a
meal. At the days end we gather for Evening Prayer and then share
our evening meal together. There are many “jobs” to be completed
each day in order to serve all these hungry people coming from
many different walks in life. There are young families, the elderly,
the disabled, the afflicted and everyone in between. All are treated
as guests at St. Francis Inn. Giving a week to work at The Inn
offers countless blessings! Pray about it, and if interested or
seeking more information, contact Marie Martino at 828-324-7929.
…that this is the largest group of First Graders ever in our
Faith Formation Program? We have 125 children in First
Grade and approximately 500 more in Grade 2 through
Grade 8. That’s a lot of volunteer catechists (teachers)
needed! We have several openings on Sunday mornings
and Wednesday afternoons.
We especially need
catechists for Wednesday afternoon First Grade. We
encourage all adults to prayerfully consider becoming a
catechist. You don’t need to have a child in the program, and
the rewards are great. All volunteers must be checked
through our Safe Environment program. We will provide
training and support along the way. Please contact Monica
Ebelhack in the Faith Formation Office at 327-2341.
If you don’t teach the next generation
about God, who will?
RCIA
Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is available to anyone who
wants to learn more about the Catholic faith, either non-baptized,
baptized in a different faith tradition, or baptized Catholic with no
further faith formation. You may just want to come and sit in for two
or three sessions at first, just to see what it’s about. That’s great –
drop in, no obligation, no commitment, your presence is all that’s
required at first. We meet on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to
8:15 PM in the Parlor beginning September 16. If you would like
more information, please call Monica Ebelhack at 327-2341.

First Communion and Confirmation Pictures
are available for pick-up through September 7
on the table outside of Fr. Nohe’s office.
CATHOLIC MEDIA
Book Blast! Your parish Kiosk will put you in the driver’s seat of
your spiritual life. Take a reading road trip to learn something new,
revive, grow or motivate your Catholic faith. A $4 donation will pave
the way! Browse the parish kiosk after weekend Masses.
