FAITH SHARING QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Adult: “What insights about your own faith have you
gained from learning about other faith traditions?
Child: “What could you do to be like a star and lead
someone to know about Jesus?”
THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE
Epiphany means manifestation, in particular Jesus’
manifestation to the Gentiles. We celebrate the
amazing grace that although Jesus described his
mission as bringing Israel back to their covenant
relationship with God, the non-Jews, or Gentiles,
heard and received the saving call of Jesus thus
extending the message “to all the earth.” The magi
begin the awareness of Jesus as the one sent by
God. Sent to call people to center our lives on right
living as people of God. This wonderful call is more
than an invitation, it is the fundamental essence of
our
life’s journey. As we continue the work of
discovering how we are called to use the gifts God
has given us we cannot lose heart. Jesus came as
one like us; we are capable of being his
messengers. We do that best by the way we live,
especially how we treat others, all others, not just
those we know and like. We do this when we are
able to move beyond our own myopia, beyond our
own needs. When we put aside our own idea of how
God is to use us and simply remain open to however
God may use us. In a small way each of us is called
to manifest our belief in Jesus by emulating his
universal call. Perhaps the season invites us to live
more fully St. Francis’ request, “make me a channel
of your peace.”
THE LIGHT OF FAITH
The first reading today is charged with the glory of the
Lord. Everyone who can come to the holy city does
come—whole caravans of people of all ages on foot
and on dromedaries and camels.
This description of an irresistible light-filled city prepares us for the story of the magi. They are guided by
their own lights—their study of astronomy and astrology—and by the light of a peculiar star. Their study tells
them that an unusual event in the heavens is a sign of
an extraordinary birth on earth. They mean to find out
about this, and they set out with gifts worthy of a king.
They are welcomed into an insignificant house in Bethlehem, offer gifts befitting a king, and receive the gift
of faith.
Paul reinforces the great gift of faith available to the
Gentiles, whom the magi represent. What they have
seen has changed them, just as it changed Paul and all
who heeded his proclamation. Like the magi and like
Paul, we are invited to receive this life that is filled
with the light of faith.

We as a parish community are blessed to have
within our parish these two wonderful
organizations working for the betterment of our
community and for a more just and equitable
society.
As chaplain for the Ladies of Charity I am able
to see first hand the dedication and love these
women have for the work they do. As one of
the arms of charity for our local community their
commitment to helping and supporting others
with their time, talent and treasure in serving
local needs such as: the El Toro Youth Center
and the Compassion Center. The Ladies are
also involved in the education and work to
combat human trafficking in our nation and the
world.
As pastor of St. Catherine of Alexandria it is a
true blessing to have such a vibrant St. Vincent
de Paul Society in our parish. The work they do
in serving the immediate needs of the poor and
vulnerable is invaluable. This weekend they are
sharing their blessing with a Clothes Closet
Winter Distribution and as we hear throughout
the year their charitable activity extends to many
people in need of a helping hand. The St.
Vincent de Paul Society will continue to grow
their outreach as they begin working from our
parish building in San Martin.
Many hands make light work and as the
volunteers in these two great charitable
organizations continue serve our parish
community they also need your prayers and
blessings in the service of God and his Church.
(and perhaps to join them)
“The first end I propose in our daily work is to do
the will of God; secondly, to do it in the manner
he wills it; and thirdly, to do it because it is his
will.” (St. Elizabeth Ann Seton)

Fr. Mark

EPIPHANY: This weekend the Catholic Church
celebrates the feast of the Epiphany, when the
three Magi, three Kings, or three Wise Men followed a star to the infant Jesus in Bethlehem of
Judea and beheld there the glory of God. The
word EPIPHANY comes from a Greek word
which means COMING TO LIGHT or APPEARING. As we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany, we commemorate God’s revelation to ALL
people of every race and every nationality.
BAPTISM: We are going to celebrate the feast
of the Baptism of the Lord next weekend, January 12th, 2014, bringing the Christmas Season
to a conclusion.
ORDINARY TIME: This year, Ordinary Time
begins on Monday, January 13th, 2014, and
continues through Tuesday, March 4th, 2014,
the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Lenten Season.
Ordinary Time is the identifying mark of the
Christian community which comes together, remembering that on this first day of the week the
Lord of life was raised up and creation came at
last to completion.

lo largo de los años los costos han aumentado.
La donación sugerida para las velas será de
$3.50. La donación sugerida para las velas votives (pequeñas) se mantendrá en $ .50. Gracias
por su comprensión y apoyo.

Confirmation — a promise met
The sacrament of Confirmation gives us the full
outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to
the apostles.
Jesus promised that he would give his abiding
presence in the Holy Spirit, a second advocate
(John 14: 15-17). He fulfilled that promise in his
Resurrection appearances and in the Pentecost
event.

HAPPY
Epiphany
[tomorrow]
You might be wondering where the warm
wishes are for the New Year. Well, since it’s
the weekend, New Year’s Day is already
way in the past. So it’s basically the current
year. And “Happy Current Year”
just
doesn’t have a nice ring to it.
And it’s all about looking to the future. And
the future is tomorrow. And tomorrow is the
Epiphany. Don’t know what the Epiphany
is? It’s the day we celebrate the 3 wise men
seeing baby Jesus for the first time, bringing
an end to this Christmas season (12 days,
remember?).
One of the definitions of epiphany is a moment of sudden revelation or insight. It
makes me think about a person who has an
epiphany—if you have one, it’s not something that you deny or ignore. And neither is
Jesus. Don’t ignore Him. Don’t deny Him.
Let Him guide your life. As Fr. John Poncini
said when he visited us, ask God what He
wants of you. Let Him reveal His plans to
you.
We hope in this new year some of your resolutions are to better your spiritual self. Start
new habits to pray more, go to Mass more
often. To pay more attention during Mass, to
attend more of the gatherings and events
we have here at the parish. Whether that be
attending Edge, Life Teen, Grupo Amigos,
or Young Active Adults. And if you don’t fit
into one of these age ranges, there are other opportunities. Or maybe you’ve been
feeling that God’s calling you to volunteer
more—we could always use more volunteers in a variety of ways in our youth ministry programs. Just ask!
Please pray for our Confirmation teens next
weekend as they will be away on retreat.
YOUNG ADULTS:
Open Gym: January 6th @ 7:30pm
Wine & Why’s: January 15th @ 7:00pm
Taco Tuesday: January 28th @ 6:30pm
YA schedule will change next month.
Please keep an eye out and spread the
word.

Family Faith Formation at St. Catherine’s Church
FAMILY PRAYER: Heavenly Father, you sent us
your son to dwell among us—Emmanuel, Messiah,
Christ our King. Thank you for this most precious
gift. May we always remember how truly special
this gift is and how much you love us. We pray in
the name of your son, Jesus, AMEN.
Sing “We Three Kings” to end the prayer.
Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh
Did you know that many cultures exchange gifts on
the Feast of Epiphany—the day on which the Wise
Men brought their gifts to baby Jesus, rather than on
Christmas Day?
Whenever you exchange your Christmas gifts, take
some time to reflect on this tradition of gift giving at
Christmas. Here are some questions you may want
to ask the kids:



What is the best gift that you received?
What made it special? Was it the gift itself, the
thought that went into it, or the person who gave
it to you?
What are some gifts that you would give to a baby?
Three wise men set out on a long journey. They followed a star to where Jesus was born and brought
him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. These
gifts were gifts that would honor a king. They also
had very special meanings.
Gold is often given to royalty and represented wealth
(remember the King Midas story?). Frankincense
was used by priests for worship in the Temple during
Jesus’ time. We use frankincense today as incense
in the church for special occasions. The third gift,
myrrh, is a perfume that is used to prepare a body
after death. This gift is said to represent and foretell
Jesus' suffering and death.
What gifts would you bring to baby Jesus?
FAMILY ACTIVITY: Many families in Europe and
Latin America celebrate the Feast of Epiphany by
sharing a “Rosca de Reyes”, a type of pastry that
has a little plastic doll that represented Jesus baked
into the bread.
Your family can celebrate this day by making a
king’s cake. Using a simple cake recipe (or a cake
mix), put a dried bean into the batter before baking.
The person who gets the bean in his or her piece of
cake gets to be king or queen for the day. Keep in
mind that Jesus was also a servant king, not one
that made others serve him.

stress, prevent illness.
And we’ll give you tips on how to destress your body.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Life hands us many epiphanies or “wake-up
calls.” A few years ago, a young couple adopted
a two-year-old child in a morass of red tape,
complications, and court hearings. At the baby’s
baptism, the priest suggested appending an
“adoption blessing,” wherein the new relationship was expressed and affirmed. There is a
place in that rite for the child to speak, and instead the priest said, “Can you give Daddy a
kiss?” Standing in the midst of his church, the
young adoptive father suddenly welled up with
tears as he embraced the child. Afterward, he
explained that through all the hassles and legal
struggles he never until that moment in church
understood that he was the parent of this child.
The ritual claimed them for each other, gave
expression to their relationship that the legal
documents never could, and firmly cemented
this child into the heart of a community as everyone erupted into heartfelt applause. This assembly witnessed in a powerful way what happens in every baptism: the mystery of adoption,
the free flow of grace, the overwhelming sense
of God’s presence at the heart of our life’s journey.

BEARS FOR FOSTER KIDS
During the first two weeks of December, Mr.
Walker’s fourth grade gathered teddy bears and
stuffed animals for Casa Voices for Children to
be distributed to foster children Mr. Walker’s
younger brother spent several years in foster
care before joining the Walker family. Now, a
junior at Palma High School, he launched the
second year of collecting stuffed animals by
asking our fourth graders to help. As an added
bonus, Mr. Walker let the three students who
brought in the most could design a new beard
and haircut for him.
Additionally, the fourth graders took a field trip
to Build A Bear where they each made a bear.
The bears were donated to the Casa project, as
well. All in all, the class collected over 900
stuffed animals. Great job, 4th graders!
