A CONTEMPLATIVE ROSARY Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 10 am Special Collection This Weekend A CALL TO SUPPORT OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN LOUISIANA • Bishop Garcia has called for an emergency collection for the 2016 Louisiana Floods “The recent storms in Louisiana may not have a name, but the names of those suffering in the wake of the worst flooding since Hurricane Katrina are our sisters and brothers. As a people of God, let us come to their aid. Our prayer and material support is urgently needed to help rebuild lives. As many as 60,000 homes have been damaged, with nearly 20,000 people being rescued from the flood waters. Immediate and long-term recovery needs place tremendous burden on public and private resources. This is a burden we can help carry as the body of Christ. Faced with the loss of their worldly possessions and, in some cases, economic livelihood, the flood waters left thousands of families feeling isolated and fearful. Let us draw near to them.” We will be taking up this collection THIS WEEKEND, September 3-4, 2016. Funds will be used to support the humanitarian efforts of Catholic Charities USA and to provide pastoral and rebuilding support to impacted Catholic dioceses. N ational Day of Prayer To Promote Peace and Unity Friday, September 9, 2016 MISSION SAN LUIS OBISPO DE TOLOSA Praying the Luminous Mysteries with Scripture and Song. Labor Day Holiday The Parish Offices will be closed Monday, September 5th. We will reopen on Tuesday at 9 am. In light of recent incidents of violence and racial tension in communities across the United States, The president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has invited all dioceses across the country to unite in a Day of Prayer and Peace in our Communities. Here at Mission San Luis Obispo, we will have a special Liturgical Celebration at the 12:10 pm Mass that day, Friday, September 9th. All are welcome to join us in prayer even if you are unable to attend the Mass. PAGE 2 Parish Center Administration Rev. Russell Brown, Pastor Rev. Braulio Valencia, Parochial Vicar Rev. Join us to learn what our new projects are, and what you can do to help. Recently, when taking Communion (Pastoral Care) to a home bound woman, she mentioned that she was ‘new to this’—had only lately become a Catholic. ”Welcome” I said. We talked a little and I, being curious, asked what had drawn her to the Catholic church. “I visited a lot of churches” she replied “and most of them criticized other faiths. The Catholic church doesn’t do that”. What a beautiful answer, and I was humbled by it. It reminded me that I need to always be mindful of the words I utter! We have no idea of the power of speech--or actions. The next meeting of the Social Justice committee will be held on September 6th in the Serra Room—7 pm. Come join us over a cup of coffee to hear Terri Clarke our guest speaker. Plans are ongoing for ways in which we can help our parishioners in need. We also have a number of interesting projects planned for the Fall, and would love to have you join us. Hope to see you on Sept. 6th! PAGE 3 R EFLECTION OF THE WEEK September 4, 2016 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time The people in the large crowd that Jesus addressed in today’s Gospel were deeply committed to loving and honoring their parents. That’s why Jesus’ words must have been shocking to them saying that they must turn from their parents (some translations even say “hate”). The point Jesus wanted to make was that nothing, not family nor possessions, could interfere with a person’s choice to follow Jesus. Followers of Jesus were to carefully calculate their commitment. Jesus meticulously helped them understand this process by comparing it to a builder who carefully planned out the structure to be built before breaking ground or to a military leader who calculated the size of his army versus the opponent’s. The follower must be willing to pay the price of discipleship before making the choice so that he/she doesn’t quit the commitment.
