The Lord of Life
At this bountiful time of year, our Sunday readings teem with life and abundance. Both the first reading, from the book of Wisdom, and the Gospel passage from Mark assure us that God did not make death or even will us to be ill. Illness and death entered
the world through the presence of evil, the Wisdom author tells us. Mark’s stories of Jesus healing a hemorrhaging woman and resuscitating a dead little girl make it clear that Jesus is from God. As the Son of God he does not will that anyone suffer illness or
death. In the face of such power, the second reading, from Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians, provides a stark contrast. Jesus,
who could raise the dead to new life, “though he was rich, for your sake he became poor” (2 Corinthians 8:9). Our gift of new life

three diverse bands, entertainment, a raffle and much more.
We have had a tremendous amount of support last year’s Parish

and enjoy this event. We could really use some additional

SPIRITUALITY
Dear parishioners and friends,
A couple weeks ago, during their annual Spring General
Assembly of the U.S. Catholic Bishops Conference, the
bishops concelebrated Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. In his homily, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of
Louisville and USCCB president reminded the bishops that Saint
Pope John Paul II led a vesper service in that cathedral during his
1999 apostolic visit and he spoke of the cathedral’s striking beauty.
He added that the bishops, in their work to promote human dignity, marriage, human ecology and an end to racism, have the opportunity
to communicate and share God’s beauty with the world.
To be honest with you, I think our St. Elizabeth church is not that
striking beauty. But many of our visitors have told me that the
church is beautiful. I think they don’t speak of the church environment
but of the church community. They have witnessed who we are and
what we do that communicates and shares God’s beauty with the
world. “Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart.” (Kahlil
Gibran) We are a hospitable community. We are a friendly and diverse community of believers in Jesus, with a heart to love the
people we encounter daily. As we open ourselves to one another
at church and express our joy in worship and service, we communicate and share God’s beauty with the world. We are a serving
community. Many parishioners come to church “not to be served but
to serve.” (Mt 20:28) We are thankful to many ministers and volunteers who have been serving humbly and come and go unnoticed. Here I just name a few: the Altar society, environment, gardeners,
parking coordinators, collections counters, office volunteers, church and
rectory maintenance team. These volunteers communicate and
share God’s beauty with the world. We are a generous community.
We have been able to organize many events and achieve many
tasks in the past year, thanks to the responsible management of
our God-given resources of time, talent, and treasure. Especially in the
last couple days many of you have made additional donations to
help make the starting date for the construction of the parish
ministry center. Your stewardship communicates and shares
God’s beauty with the world.
We thank God for who we are and what we do. But let us also
make efforts to be a spiritual community. This means we must have
regular encounters with Jesus and should be able to tell other
people about our spiritual stories. We celebrate the Breaking of the
Word in small faith communities (in the context of family, ministry
groups, workplace, coffee shop, meals, etc.). We celebrate the Breaking
of the Bread by sharing our presence, compassion, and peace with other
people, especially the needy, the lonely, the sick, and those who are different with us in terms of color, background, religion, and ethnicity. In the
next few months, you will hear more and more about the Small
Faith Communities that our parish will establish to foster this
vision. Let us take efforts to communicate and share God’s beauty with
the world.
This weekend we honor and bless all parish ministries and volunteers, who have been serving the church with humility, generosity, and dedication. On behalf of the parish community, I
thank them all. They make our church community beautiful as
they bring in the joy of service. Through their service, they communicate and share God’s beauty with the world.

The apostle makes present again
the life of Jesus
In the past, people risk their lives to find
precious spices or a gold mine. Today, countries will destroy each other to obtain petroleum, iron, copper,
phosphate, or uranium. But, when it
concerns people’s spiritual lives, no one is eager to
search them out.
If one said that the laity have the charism of the Holy
Spirit, some people would not take it seriously. If one
stated that the laity are priests, prophets, kings, those
same people would not believe it. How many of the
laity understand the fact that they have been called by
God and that God needs them? How many are proud
and grateful for having been made children of God
through baptism and witnesses by confirmation?
This is the age of the laity. As long as we fail to mobilize
the strength and talents of the People of God, to make
them aware of and active in their apostolic roles,
there will remain a large strata of society that waits to
be imbued with the Gospel.

Kính thưa Quý Cụ, Quý Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em thân mến,
Vài tuần trước, trong thời gian có khoá họp bán niên của Hội Đồng Giám Mục
Hoa Kỳ, các đức giám mục đã dâng Thánh Lễ đồng tế tại Vương Cung Thánh Đường St. Louis. Trong bài giảng, Đức
Tổng Giám mục Joseph E. Kurtz của tổng giáo phận Louisville và là chủ tịch HĐGMHK đã nhắc lại sự kiện Thánh
Giáo Hoàng Gioan Phaolô II chủ sự buổi cầu nguyện tại Vương Cung Thánh Đường đó trong chuyến tông du của ngài
vào năm 1999 và vị thánh giáo hoàng đã nói về nét tuyệt mỹ của ngôi thánh đường. Ngài còn nói thêm rằng các đức
giám mục, trong công việc cổ võ nhân phẩm con người, hôn nhân gia đình, bảo vệ môi trường, và chấm dứt nạn kỳ thị
chủng tộc, cũng có nhiều dịp để rao truyền và chia sẻ sự tuyệt mỹ của Thiên Chúa với thế giới.
Thành thật mà nói, tôi không nghĩ nhà thờ Thánh Elizabeth của chúng ta đẹp tuyệt mỹ đâu. Vậy mà nhiều người
đến thăm cứ nói với tôi là nơi đây thật xinh đẹp. Tôi đoán là họ không có ý nói về mỹ thuật hay trang trí trong nhà thờ
mà họ nói về đời sống cộng đoàn của chúng ta. “Vẻ đẹp thật sự không nằm trên gương mặt, nhưng chính là ánh sáng
trong tâm hồn.” (Kahlil Gibran) Chúng ta là một cộng đoàn niềm nở. Chúng ta là môt cộng đoàn thân thiện và đa dạng,
là những người tin vào Đức Giêsu, với một trái tim yêu thương hết thảy những ai chúng ta gặp gỡ thường ngày. Khi
chúng ta mở lòng mình cho nhau, và biểu lộ niềm vui trong việc thờ phượng và phục vụ, là chúng ta rao truyền và chia
sẻ sự tuyệt mỹ của Thiên Chúa với thế giới. Chúng ta là một cộng đoàn phục vụ. Nhiều anh chị em giáo dân đến nhà
thờ “không phải để được phục vụ nhưng để phục vụ.” (Mt 20:28) Chúng ta cảm ơn nhiều thừa tác viên và tình nguyện
viên đã phục vụ việc nhà thờ một cách kiêm tốn, đến rồi đi trong âm thầm. Tôi nêu ra vài thí dụ: ban lo khăn bàn thờ,
ban trang trí, người làm vườn, ban trật tự giao thông, ban đếm tiền, các tình nguyện viên trong văn phòng giáo xứ, và
ban bảo trì nhà thờ và nhà xứ. Những tình nguyện viên này rao truyền và chia sẻ sự tuyệt mỹ của Thiên Chúa với thế
giới. Chúng ta là một cộng đoàn quảng đại. Trong năm vừa qua chúng ta tổ chức được nhiều buổi lễ và sự kiện, cũng
nhưng hoàn thành nhiều công việc nhờ vào tinh thần quản lý Nhà Chúa – biết chia sẻ thời gian, tài sức, và của cải của
anh chị em. Đặc biệt là trong những ngày qua có nhiều anh chị em đã đóng góp thêm cho dự án xây dựng trung tâm
mục vụ, giúp cho ngày khởi công ngày một gần kề. Anh chị em qua tinh thần chia sẻ đang rao truyền và chia sẻ sự
tuyệt mỹ của Thiên Chúa với thế giới.
Chúng ta tạ ơn Chúa vì chúng ta là những tín hữu và vì những việc chúng ta cống hiến. Nhưng chúng ta cũng hãy
nỗ lực trở thành một cộng đoàn đức tin. Có nghĩa là chúng ta gặp gỡ Đức Giêsu thường xuyên hơn và có khả năng kể
cho những người khác về những câu chuyện nội tâm. Chúng ta hãy cử hành Chia sẻ Lời Chúa trong những cộng đoàn
đức tin nhỏ (trong bối cảnh gia đình, đoàn thể, công sở, quán nước, trong bữa ăn, v.v…) Chúng ta cũng hãy cử hành
nghi thức Bẻ Bánh bằng chia sẻ sự hiện diện, cảm thông và bình an với những người khác, nhất là với những ai túng
thiếu, đơn chiếc, đau yếu, và những người khác biệt với chúng ta trên bình diện màu da, nguồn gốc, tín ngưỡng, sắc
tộc. Trong vài tháng tới, anh chị em sẽ nghe nhiều hơn về các Cộng Đoàn Chia Sẻ Đức Tin Nhỏ mà giáo xứ sẽ thiết lập
để phát triển mục đích xây dựng cộng đoàn đức tin. Hãy có những nỗ lực để rao truyền và chia sẻ sự tuyệt mỹ của
Thiên Chúa với thế giới.
Hôm nay chúng ta vinh danh và chúc lành cho tất cả các thừa tác viên phục vụ và tình nguyện viên, là những người
đang phục vụ giáo xứ với tinh thần khiêm tốn, quảng đại, và nhiệt tâm. Thay mặt cho toàn thể giáo xứ, tôi chân thành
tri ân tất cả. Họ kiến tạo cộng đoàn giáo xứ ngày một tươi đẹp hơn khi họ đóng góp niềm vui phục vụ. Qua chứng tá

Cộng tác với ơn Chúa
Chuyện kể rằng một bà già bị đau răng, bà đã làm Tuần
chín ngày để kính thánh Antôn, vì người ta nói: Thánh
Antôn "chuyên trách" về bệnh này.
Hết tuần chín ngày bà vẫn còn đau. Lúc đó một vị linh
mục đến thăm. Bà liền hỏi:
- Xin Cha nói cho con biết: có phải thánh Antôn chuyên
trách bệnh đau răng không?
Vị linh mục nói:
- Bà hãy nghe tôi: Đây là địa chỉ của nha sĩ. Hãy đến đó
và nói là tôi giới thiệu, họ sẽ làm không công cho bà.
Bà già la lên:
- Trời đất ơi, một ông linh mục vô thần.
Thánh Antôn tự nhủ:
- Kể ra cũng đau lòng, để nhận lời cầu nguyện của bà,
chính ta đã gởi cho bà vị linh mục này. Thế mà!
Nếu bà già trong câu chuyện suy niệm bài Tin
mừng hôm nay, chắc bà sẽ không làm cho thánh Antôn
phải thất vọng. Người phụ nữ xuất huyết trong bài Tin
mừng và bà già đau răng trong câu chuyện trên, cả hai
đều tin tưởng vào Chúa. Nhưng niềm tin của họ có sự
khác biệt rất lớn. Người phụ nữ xuất huyết nghĩ mình
phải làm điều gì đó chứ không chỉ tin suông. Bà đến với
Chúa chứ không chờ Chúa đến với mình. Bà già đau
răng thì cầu nguyện rồi chờ phép lạ. Bà không chịu làm
gì nữa...
Lạy Chúa, Chúa yêu thương chúng con với trái tim
của người cha người mẹ. Chúa để chúng con hoàn toàn
tự do đáp lại tình yêu Chúa. Xin cho chúng con luôn
biết sống ngoan ngoãn, thảo hiếu, đẹp lòng Chúa. Xin
dạy chúng con biết cộng tác với ơn Chúa, để được Chúa
ban ơn trợ giúp trong những cơn gian nan khốn khó.

MENSAJE DE NUESTRO PARROCO

Queridos feligreses y amigos:
Unas semanas atrás, durante la Conferencia Primaveral de la
Asamblea General de los Obispos Católicos en Estados
Unidos, los obispos concelebraron la misa en la Basílica de la Catedral de
San Luis. En su homilía, el arzobispo Joseph E. Kurtz de Louisville y presidente de USCCB les recordó a los obispos que el Santo Papa Juan Pablo II
condujo un servicio de vísperas en ésta catedral en su visita apostólica de
1999 y les habló de la impresionante belleza. Añadió que los obispos, en su
trabajo promueven la dignidad humana, el matrimonio, la ecología humana
y del fin al racismo, tienen la oportunidad de comunicar y compartir la
belleza de Dios al mundo.
Para ser sincero con ustedes, pienso que nuestra Iglesia de Santa Elizabeth
no tiene tan sorprendente belleza. Pero muchos de nuestros visitantes me
han dicho que nuestra iglesia es hermosa. Pienso que no hablan del medio
ambiente de la iglesia sino de la comunidad parroquiana. Son testigos de lo
que somos y de lo que hacemos para comunicar y compartir la belleza de
Dios al mundo. “La belleza no está en la cara; la belleza es una luz en el
corazón”. (Kahlil Gribran) Somos una comunidad acogedora. Somos
amigables y una comunidad diversa de creyentes en Jesús, con un corazón
lleno de amor para la gente que nos encontramos diariamente. Al abrirnos
unos con otros en la iglesia para expresar nuestra alegría en el servicio y la
veneración, comunicamos y compartirmos la belleza de Dios al mundo.
Somos una comunidad de servicio. Muchos feligreses vienen a la iglesia
“no a que les sirvieran sino a servir”. (Mt. 20:28) Estamos agradecidos a
los muchos ministros y voluntarios quienes han estado sirviendo humildemente y van y vienen sin ser inadvertidos. Menciono algunos: la
Sociedad del Altar, el medio ambiente, los jardineros, los coordinadores del
estacionamiento, los contadores del dinero, los voluntarios en la oficina, el
equipo de mantenimiento de la iglesia y la rectoria. Estos voluntarios comunican y comparten la belleza de Dios al mundo. Somos una comunidad
generosa. Hemos organizado varios eventos y logrado varias tareas en el
año pasado, gracias a la dirección responsable de nuestro Dios dándonos
los recursos del tiempo, talento y tesoro. Especialmente en los últimos días
muchos de ustedes han contribuido adicionalmente con donaciones para
ayudar al comienzo de la fecha de construcción para el centro ministerial
parroquial. Su administración comunica y comparte la belleza de Dios al
mundo.
Damos gracias a Dios por lo que somos y por lo que hacemos. Pero
hagamos el esfuerzo de ser una comunidad espiritual. Esto quiere decir
que debemos tener encuentros con Jesús regularmente y que debemos estar
dispuestos ha hablar con las otras personas de nuestras historias espirituales.
Celebremos la Ruptura del Mundo en pequeñas comunidades de fe (en el
contexto familiar, en los grupos ministeriales, en los lugares de trabajo, en
los cafetines, en las comidas, etc). Celebremos la Ruptura del Pan al compartir nuestra presencia, compasión, y paz con las demás personas, especialmente con los necesitados, con los solitarios, con los enfermos, y con
aquellos que son diferentes a nosotros en terminos de color, de origen, de
religión y de etnia. En los próximos meses, oirán más y más de nuestras
Pequeñas Comunidades de Fe que nuestra parroquia establecerá para
promover nuestra visión. Hagamos esfuerzos para comunicar y compartir
la belleza de Dios al mundo.
Este fin de semana honramos y bendecimos a todos los ministros y voluntarios de la parroquia, quienes han servido a la iglesia con humildad, con
generosidad y con dedicacion. En nombre de la comunidad parroquiana,
deseo agradecerles a todos. Llenan de belleza nuestra comunidad parroquial al traer la alegría del servicio. Por medio de su servicio, se comunican y
comparten la belleza de Dios al mundo.

El Señor de la Vida
En este tiempo tan fecundo del año nuestras lecturas dominicales rebosan con vida y abundancia. Tanto la primera lectura,
del libro de la Sabiduría, como la tercera del Evangelio de san
Marcos nos aseguran que Dios no creó la muerte, ni quiere
que suframos de ninguna enfermedad. Fue por la envidia del
diablo que la muerte entró al mundo, según nos dice el Sabio.
Y lo que san Marcos nos cuenta sobre la curación de la hemorroisa y cómo revivió la hija de Jairo nos muestran claramente
que Jesús viene de Dios. Como Hijo de Dios, Jesús no quiere
que nadie sufra enfermedad ni muerte. Pero en el contexto de
tanto poder, la segunda lectura, de la segunda carta de san
Pablo a los corintios, nos presenta un fuerte contraste. Jesús,
que puede levantar a los muertos a una nueva vida, “siendo
rico se hizo pobre por ustedes” (2 Corintios 8:9). Así pues, la
nueva vida que recibimos como regalo de Cristo exige una

respuesta: nuestra caridad.
Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe
Muchos hispanos que vivimos en Estados Unidos somos
personas bilingües. Podemos leer la Palabra de Dios en inglés o
español. Por ejemplo, el texto de Juan 21:15-19, en el que Jesús
le pregunta a Pedro si lo ama. El texto en inglés nos dice que
Jesús le pregunta tres veces: Peter, do you love me? Pedro le
responde: Lord, you know that I love you, mientras que en español le dice: “Señor, tú sabes que te quiero”.
La diferencia es casi imperceptible, pero importante. El
texto original fue escrito en griego y usaba dos palabras que
significan amor, ágape (amor que se sacrifica) y fileo (amor
fraterno). En inglés, Jesús y Pedro usan la misma palabra, love,
mientras en español Jesús dos veces pregunta por “amor”, y
Pedro responde con “querer”. La tercera vez, Jesús se acopla a
Pedro y sólo pregunta en torno al “querer”, reconociendo que
en ese momento, Pedro no puede darle más que eso. Jesús le
asegura que algún día Pedro sería capaz del amor ágape entregando su vida por él. Jesús se acopla a nosotros pidiendo lo que
le podemos dar y ayudándonos a crecer hasta que podamos darle toda nuestra vida.

Vivamos la Palabra de Dios
Hoy podríamos orar por aquellas personas que necesitan ser
sanadas por las manos de Jesús, y por esas otras personas que
las cuidan y sufren con ellas.
Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios
Los Santos y Otras Celebraciones
Estas dos historias son bien conmovedoras tal vez sea porque
incluye mucho tocar con las manos y, dicho sea de paso, una
manera prohibida de tocar. El padre lo inicia al echarse a los
pies de Jesús y pedirle ayuda para su hija moribunda: “Ven a
poner las manos sobre ella para que sane y viva” (Marcos 5,23).
Con sólo tocarla sanará.

Luego, cuando Jesús pasaba entre la gente, una mujer aparece
súbitamente en escena tratando de acercarse a Jesús y diciendo
para entre sí: “Si logro tocar aunque sólo sea su manto,
quedare sana” (5:28). Jesús sabe inmediatamente que alguien
lo tocó y pregunta: “Quién ha tocado mi ropa?” (5:30). Los
discípulos observan ironicamente que la multitud está… bueno,
lo está apretujando… así es cómo puede preguntar, “quién me
ha tocado?”
Es importante recordar esto, porque la mujer tenía una hemorragia, una condición que la hacía “impura” según la ley de Moisés; tocarla haría a Jesús impuro. Sin embargo, el tocar ella a
Jesús tiene el efecto contrario: la hemorragia cesa y ella queda
limpia de nuevo.
Lecturas de Hoy
Primera lectura — Por envidia del diablo entró la muerte en
el mundo (Sabiduría 1:13-15; 2:23-24).
Salmo — Te alabaré, Señor, eternamente (Salmo 30 [29]).
Segunda lectura — Que la abundancia de ustedes remedie la
necesidad de sus hermanos pobres (2 Corintios 8:7, 9, 13-15).
Evangelio — ¡Oyeme, niña, levántate! (Marcos 5:21-43 [5:2124, 35b-43]).
Cuando llega la noticia de que la niña está muerta Jesús llama
al padre para que deje a un lado el miedo y para revestirlo de fe.
Al llegar a la casa Jesús entra y tomando a la niña de la mano le
dice: “Niña, a tí te hablo, levántate” (Marcos 5:41). En el
evangelio segun san Marcos hay dieciseís incidentes en que
Jesús toca a alguién o le toma de la mano. La niña se levanta y
Jesús pide que le traigan de comer. También en ese caso el
haber tocado a la niña hubiese hecho a Jesús impuro pero, por
el contrario, al tocarla ella queda limpia y libre de la muerte.
Dos personas desesperadas, una niña moribunda y una mujer
con hemorragias. Jesús las toca a ellas y ambas lo tocan a Él, la
mujer por su propia fe y la niña por la fe de su padre. Tal
parece que la sanación depende de una corriente entre el que
sana y la persona que va a ser sanada. Es muy bueno saber que
Dios acepta delegados.
