Love One Another
Last Sunday we heard the familiar passage from John’s Gospel in which Jesus uses the metaphor of the vine and the branches.
In that passage we were told that if we remained in Christ we would bear much fruit. Today’s Gospel tells us just what that fruit is:
love. Today’s second reading and Gospel together create a great hymn to love. The chorus of this hymn is simple—God loves us so
much that Jesus was sent into the world so that we would have life. The Lord Jesus, who last week told us to remain in him, this
week tells us to remain in his love. In a world marked by division and terrorism, the Lord’s final words in today’s Gospel are a

great challenge: “This I command you: love one another.”

First Reading — The gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on
the Gentiles also (Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48).

Dear parishioners and friends,
In the last couple months, Pope Francis has
made several appointments in the United States
Catholic Church that has something to do with San Francisco
in California. Bishop Robert McElroy, a San Francisco native
and Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco, was appointed Bishop
of San Diego. Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Daly of San Jose, another S.F. native, was appointed Bishop of Spokane in Washington. And Bishop John Wester of Salt Lake City in Utah,
also a S.F. native, was appointed Archbishop of Santa Fe in
New Mexico. They came from one place, began their priestly
ministry in the same archdiocese, and were sent forth to different regions of the country to shepherd dioceses. They live in
the Spirit and also follow the Spirit (Gal 5:25).

The Apostle –
The apostle makes present again the
life of Jesus
An apostle of personal contact:
“Were not our hearts burning
within us while he spoke to us
on the road, as he opened up
the Scriptures to us?” (Luke
24:32). Every contact is an
apostolic encounter.
An apostle of counseling others: There are also those who
exercise their apostolate by counseling, thus bringing
hope to nearly shattered lives. They help those in crisis by opening up horizons that allow others to realize
their own potential and to clearly perceive the call of
faith. If there were more people like those apostles,
there would be fewer stories in the news about people
committing suicide.
An apostle at the dining table: A meal is every day event,
but Jesus’ dining at the houses of Mary and Martha, of
Simon, and Zacchaeus is no different from his dining
with us. His presence is salvific: “Today salvation has
come to this house” (Luke 19:9)
Bishop Daly said when asked, “Are you looking forward to
going to Spokane?” “Yes, but I don’t expect leaving the Bay
Area to be easy. I have to leave my family, with whom I’m
very close, and many friends. But my motto is: ‘Into Your
Hands, Lord.’ That motto has been guiding me throughout my
life. God has called me to head this diocese, and I’m happy to
say yes.” The Bishop opens himself to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Bishop McElroy preached at his installation Mass, “We are
called to journey forth from this beautiful Church today as pilgrims together, accompanying one another, not knowing at
times exactly where we are going, but knowing that ultimately
it is God who leads us and that in the end that is more than
enough.” The Bishop opens himself to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Archbishop Wester gave a thought of what he is going to do,
“It’s clear that we live in a pluralistic society, where people
have different thoughts, different views, different beliefs, so
the challenge for us, I think, is to live together in harmony and
respect.” The Bishop opens himself to the guidance of the Holy
Spirit to lead his flock “bear witness to the Christian faith in
words accompanied by deeds.” (CCC 1316)

Yesterday, Bishop Patrick J. McGrath visited our parish and
celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation for thirty-four candidates of our parish youth. We congratulate them for being
“sealed with the gift the Holy Spirit”. The Sacrament of Confirmation is an extension of our baptism and first communion,
where we realize the gifts that the Holy Spirit has instilled in us
y and we go forth and use those gifts for the glory of God,
however we may be called to that. “The wind blows where it
wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not
know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (Jn 3:8) So dear all confirmandi,
I challenge you to open yourself to the guidance of the Holy
Spirit.

Kính thưa Quý Cụ, Quý Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em thân mến,
Trong hai tháng vừa qua, Đức Thánh Cha Phanxicô đã bổ nhiệm vài giám mục cai
quản các giáo phận thuộc Giáo Hội Công Giáo Hoa Kỳ có liên quan đến San Francisco tiểu bang California. Đức Cha
Robert McElroy, sinh trưởng tại San Francisco và là Giám mục phụ tá San Francisco, nay được bổ nhiệm làm Giám
mục San Diego. Đức Cha Thomas Daly, cũng sinh trưởng tại San Francisco và là Giám mục phụ tá giáo phận San Jose, nay được bổ nhiệm làm Giám mục Spokane bên bang Washington. Và Đức Cha John Wester, cũng sinh trưởng tại
San Francisco và là Giám mục Salt Lake City bên tiểu bang Utah, nay được bổ nhiệm làm Tổng Giám mục Santa Fe
bên tiểu bang New Mexico. Cả ba vị giám mục đều xuất thân từ một thành phố, thụ phong và khởi đầu sứ vụ linh mục
từ cùng một Tổng giáo phận, và được sai đi đến các miền khác nhau để cai quản các giáo phận. Các ngài sống trong
Thần Khí và bước theo Thần Khí (Gal 5:25).
Đức Cha Daly khi được hỏi, “Đức cha có mong đợi ngày về nhận giáo phận Spokane không?” đã trả lời, “Có chứ,
nhưng tôi không nghĩ việc rời Vùng Vịnh là điều dễ dàng. Tôi phải xa gia đình mà tôi rất gần gũi của mình, và xa
nhiều bạn bè nữa. Nhưng khẩu hiệu giám mục của tôi là: ‘Phó dâng trong tay Cha.’ Chính khẩu hiệu này dẫn dắt tôi
trong cuộc sống. Chúa đã gọi tôi chăm sóc giáo phận này, thì tôi vui vẻ nói lời xin vâng.” Đức Giám mục đã mở lòng
ra để Thần Khí Chúa hướng dẫn.
Đức Cha McElroy đã chia sẻ trong bài giảng ngày Lễ Nhậm Chức, “Chúng ta được gọi xuất hành từ ngôi Thánh
Đường xinh đẹp này hôm nay như là những lữ khách đồng hành với nhau, dù có lúc không biết chúng ta đi đâu, nhưng
biết chắc Chúa dẫn đưa chúng ta và đó mới là điểm quan trọng.” Đức Giám mục đã mở lòng ra để Thần Khí Chúa
hướng dẫn.
Đức Tổng Giám mục Wester thì có dòng suy tư về sứ vụ mà ngài sẽ thực hiện, “Rõ ràng là chúng ta đang sống
trong một xã hội đa dạng, nơi con người suy nghĩ khác nhau, có quan điểm khác nhau, có niềm tin khác nhau, và vì thế
mà thách đố cho chúng ta, tôi thiết nghĩ, chính là sống chung với nhau trong ôn hoà và tôn trọng.” Đức Giám mục đã
mở lòng ra để Thần Khí Chúa hướng dẫn để ngài dẫn dắt đoàn chiên của mình “làm chứng ta cho đức tin Công Giáo
trong lời nói cũng như việc làm.” (CCC 1316)
Và sáng hôm qua, Đức Giám mục giáo phận Patrick J. McGrath đã về thăm giáo xứ chúng ta và ban Bí Tích Thêm
Sức cho 34 thiếu niên trong xứ. Chúng ta chúc mừng các em đã được “lãnh nhận ấn tính ơn Chúa Thánh Thần.” Bí
tích Thêm Sức nối kết với bí tích Thánh Tẩy và bí tích Thánh Thể, để từ đó chúng ta nhận ra những ơn của Chúa
Thánh Thần thấm nhuần trong chúng ta và rồi chúng ta ra đi và sử dụng những món quà đó để làm sáng danh Chúa, ở
những nơi và hoàn cảnh mà chúng ta được sai đến. “Gió muốn thổi đâu thì thổi; ông nghe tiếng gió, nhưng không biết
gió từ đâu đến và thổi đi đâu. Ai bởi Thần Khí mà sinh ra thì cũng vậy.” (Jn 3:8) Vì vậy hỡi các bạn trẻ vừa lãnh nhận
bí tích Thêm Sức, cha thách đố các con hãy mở lòng ra để Thần Khí Chúa hướng dẫn.

Dầu Bệnh Nhân. Nhờ việc xứ Dầu Thánh này, xin Chúa
hãy đến và nâng đỡ các tôi tớ Chúa bằng tình thương
yêu nhân từ và được thuyên giảm mọi đau đớn bệnh tật
xác hồn.

Queridos feligreses y amigos:
Meses atrás, el Papa Francisco hizo varios
nombramientos en la Iglesia Católica de los
Estados Unidos los cuales tuvieron que ver con
San Francisco, California. Obispo Robert McElroy, nativo de
San Francisco y Obispo Auxiliar de San Francisco, fue nombrado Obispo de San Diego. Obispo Auxiliar Thomas Daly de
San José, otro oriundo de San Francisco, fue nombrado Obispo
de Spokane en Washington. El Obispo John Wester de Salt
Lake City en Utah, también nacido en San Francisco, fue nombrado Arzobispo de Santa Fé en Nuevo México. Todos ellos
vienen de un solo lugar, empezaron su ministerio sacerdotal en
la misma arquidiócesis, y de allí fueron enviados a diferentes
lugares del país como pastores diocesanos. Ellos viven el espíritu y también siguen al espíritu. (Gal 5:25).
Ámense Unos a Otros
El domingo pasado escuchamos el familiar pasaje del
Evangelio de san Juan en el que Jesús usa el símbolo de la
viña y las ramas. En ese pasaje escuchamos que si permanecemos en Cristo daremos mucho fruto. El Evangelio de hoy nos
dice cuál es ese fruto: el amor. La segunda lectura de hoy junto con el Evangelio crean un gran himno de amor. El coro de
este himno es sencillo –Dios nos ama tanto que envió a Jesús
al mundo para que tuviéramos vida. El Señor Jesús que nos
dijo la semana pasada que permaneciéramos en él, esta semana nos dice que permanezcamos en su amor. En un mundo
marcado por las divisiones y el terrorismo, las últimas palabras del Evangelio de hoy son un gran reto: “Esto es lo que les
mando: que se amen los unos a los otros”.
El Obispo Daly dijo cuando le preguntaron: “¿Estáis listo para
ir a Spokane?” “Sí, pero no es fácil dejar el área de la bahía.
Tengo que dejar a mi familia, a la que estoy muy apegada, y
muchos amigos. Pero mi lema es: ‘En tus Manos, Señor’.
Este moto ha sido mi guía durante mi vida. Dios me ha
llamado a ser la cabeza de esta diócesis, y estoy muy contento
de aceptar”. El Obispo se abre a la guía del Espíritu Santo.

Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe
Obispo McElroy predicó en la misa de su instalación:
“Estamos llamados a la travesía de esta hermosa Iglesia hoy
como peregrinos unidos, acompañándonos unos a otros, sin
saber algunas veces a dónde estamos yendo, pero sabiendo que
últimamente es Dios quién nos guía y que al final es lo mejor”.
El Obispo se abre a la guía del Espíritu Santo.
Gracias a los grupos, asociaciones y movimientos tenemos
muchos movimientos evangelizadores dentro de la Iglesia católica. Movimientos como Cursillos de Cristiandad, Talleres
de Oración, S.I.N.E., la Renovación Carismática, Espiritualidad de la Cruz, Jornadas de Vida Cristiana, que dependen de
himnos religiosos o de un canto lema para ir formando una
conciencia cristiana en sus miembros o seguidores. Esta formación se basa en una relación íntima y emocional entre Jesús
y sus seguidores.
Un himno carismático dice así: “Yo tengo un amigo que
me ama”, y otro de ellos dice: “Él es mi amigo Jesús, él es
Dios, él es rey, es amor y verdad”. Estos dos himnos de autor
desconocido, enfatizan lo bello que es tener una relación íntima con el Señor, mejor dicho, con nuestro amigo Jesús. Jesús
mismo enfatiza este tipo de relación cuando dice: “No los llamo ya siervos... a ustedes los he llamado amigos” (Juan
15:15).
Toda amistad se basa en una mutua atracción, simpatía y
reciprocidad. Jesús dice que somos sus amigos 1) cuando hacemos lo que nos manda y 2) porque nos enseña lo que recibe
de su Padre. La amistad con Jesús, es más que una emoción, se
basa en el compromiso y la perseverancia.
La idea del Arzobispo Wester es: “Está claro que vivimos en
una sociedad pluralista, donde la gente tiene diferentes ideas,
diferentes maneras de ver, diferentes creencias, el desafío para
nosotros, pienso que es, vivir juntos en armonía y respeto”. El
Obispo se abre así mismo a la guía del Espíritu Santo para
guiar a su rebaño “ser testigos a la fe cristiana en las palabras
acompañadas por los hechos”. (CCC 1316)
Ayer, el Obispo Patrick J. McGrath visitó y celebró el Sacramento de la Confirmación a 34 jóvenes candidatos de nuestra
parroquia. Los felicitamos por ser “el sello del Espíritu Santo”.
El Sacramento de la Confirmación es una extensión de nuestro
bautizo y nuestra primera comunión, donde nos damos cuenta
que los dones del Espíritu Santo han infundado en nosostros y
los seguimos y los usamos como dones para la Gloria de Dios,
de la manera en que somos llamados. “el viento sopla dónde
quiere, y tú oyes su silbido; pero no sabes de dónde viene ni a
dónde va; así le sucede al que ha nacido del Espíritu”. (Jn 3:8)
A todos los queridos confirmandis les desafío a que se abran
asimismos a la guía del Espíritu Santo.

Algunas veces puede parecernos que no somos aptos para
amar como Jesús amó. En la primera lectura de hoy vemos
que Dios desea tan ardientemente entrar en nuestro corazón y
hacernos aptos para amar. El Espíritu Santo descendió sobre
aquellos que escuchaban aunque todavía no habían sido bautizados. Pídele a Dios que te ayude a amar como Jesús amó.

¿Qué es una Mamá ... ?
Una mamá es aquel ser que con la caricia tierna de su mano
cansada y el sana que sana colita de rana… todo cambia de
color y el dolor desaparece, la tristeza se disuelve, la nostalgia
se difumina y la alegría toma su lugar.
Si, porque ese ensalmo bendito tiene el poder más grande del
mundo.
Es capaz de transformar la oscuridad en luz, la noche en día el
llanto en risa y el hambre en siesta.
Esa mano ajada que a pesar de los años sigue tan tersa y cálida,
posee el dulce encanto de hacer desaparecer el miedo, de convertir agua y dos papas en la más exquisite sopa o un simple
huevo en auténtico caviar.
Tiene la magia de transformar harapos en trajes de novia,
cortinas viejas en hermosas sobrecamas y noches frías en gratificantes sueños.
Esa voz de letanía permanente que agobia como chicharra,
regaña sin condición, se complace en torturar bañando y
sonando narices frente a las visitas, cantaleteando por el
novio que no le conviene y por los tragos de anoche que
no la dejaron "pegar los ojos"; se convierte en acusadora conciencia que no da tregua en vacaciones y que no baja el tono
hasta recibir a su "Doctor" y aunque éste, después de la ceremonia le dá un beso y se vaya de luna de miel, sin rencor
empieza a ensayar destemplados cánticos de cuna para malcriar nietos y justificarlos.
Esa voz que reparte "Jesus, María y José" a toda hora y en
todas las direcciones, no perdona un "cito mi muchacho,
como estará pasando de bueno en Cartagena".
Esa voz que llora en cada bienvenida y anega aeropuertos en
cada despedida, es la voz más tonante, pero más dulce del universo.
Esa figurita menuda, cansada de cargar años, echar bendiciones, no escatima comida, cantaleta, ni consejos, es capaz
de enfrentar el mundo por su muchacho, conmover jueces y
derrumbar ceñudos fiscales con la potencia hidrica de sus
lágrimas.
No le importa
el frío si puede dar calor. Llena su hambre
viendo
comer, descansa arrullando, hace suya la
derrota,
disfruta a escondidas y sin alarde la victoria, pone
el pecho sin importarle las balas y se asoma
por
entre las horas esperando a quien no va a
llegar
con resignación, sin acusar al tiempo.
Es la
madre... que no tiene envidia, no es jactanciosa,
no se envanece, no hace nada indebido, no
busca lo suyo, no se irrita, no guarda rencor,
no se goza de la injusticia, mas se goza de la
verdad, todo lo sufre, todo lo cree, todo lo
espera, todo lo soporta... es el amor que nunca
deja de ser... es el amor de madre, es decir...
es el
amor de Dios... "
