Newsletter Second Quarter 2013
ASIS International, Chapter 092, San Antonio, Texas The Sentinel Newsletter 2013 2ND QUARTER Chapter Chairman's Comments Employees deliberately ignore security rules Fellow members, Below is an arcle of a study that shows our own employees are our biggest vulnerability in IT Security. As we know, employees also play a crical role in physical security, so please share this informaon with those that will help close the holes that leave our companies suscepble to security breaches. A recent survey from Lieberman So"ware reveals that more than 80% of IT security professionals believe that corporate employees deliberately ignore security rules issued by the IT department. The survey, which looked at the a&tudes of nearly 250 IT security professionals, also discovered that more than half of those who think that workers deliberately ignore IT security direcves do not believe end-users would listen more even if these mandates were issued by execuve management. These findings are despite the fact that more IT security professionals and vendors are insisng that in order to improve IT security within organizaons, strategic guidance must be issued from the board level. Commenng on the research, Philip Lieberman, CEO of Lieberman So"ware, said: “These figures highlight the fact that most end-users are sll not taking IT security seriously and are unnecessarily pu&ng corporate data – and potenally customer informaon – at risk”. These behaviors are connuing even a"er it has been proven that human error is the leading cause of data breaches. Organizaons need to implement be5er cyber security training that properly instructs staff about the consequences of data breaches. “IT groups must also look beyond convenonal security products and invest in technology like privileged identy management (PIM),” connued Lieberman. “PIM products ensure that powerful privileged accounts found throughout the enterprise in large organizaons are available only to authorized IT personnel with limited-me, audited access. This ensures that end-users are not able to accidentally or maliciously change configuraon se&ngs, access systems with sensive data, or perform other acons that are not required of their jobs”. For those who are possibly looking for a government posion, I recommend reviewing the following site and building a profile (this will allow you to quickly submit an applicaon if a posion becomes available): Federal Jobs: www.usajobs.gov. Also, there are countless non-federal web sites. Each has their own strengths and weakness. I have not noced whether one is be5er than the other. Some of these job search sites include: www.job.com, www.careerbuilder.com, www.clearancejobs.com and www.Monster.com. Addionally, we cannot post an enre resume in this secon, due to the space available. Again, we are a networking organizaon so I am hoping we can all help out our fellow members as best as possible.
