Flexible sealing solutions for high-tech vessels
Report from a jack-up vessel ready for any challenge
Vidar of Hochtief Solutions AG is
an amazingly strong jack-up vessel
for the realization of demanding
offshore projects. The task of
installing oil and gas platforms as
well as wind farms in extreme
weather conditions requires first
class components and details on all
levels, and Roxtec cable and pipe
transits are used all over the ship to
ensure safety and operational
reliability. Furthermore, the flexibility
of Roxtec seals allows for the daily
design changes, upgrades and
retrofit efforts that are so frequent
in the shipping and shipbuilding
sectors today.

cable penetrations onboard.
Andreas Standfuss of Hochtief
Solutions AG and Piotr Hetmanski of
Pionet, the Roxtec distributor in Poland.
Vidar has four 90-meter long legs with 12-meter
long feet which can raise the 36 000-ton ship 20
meters above the waves. Vidar’s loading capacity,
stability and powerful 108-meter crane make it
possible to install a wind turbine every week!
Roxtec sealing system
Roxtec cable and pipe
seals ensure safety,
efficiency and operational
reliability. They are adapt
able to cables and pipes
of different sizes thanks to
Multidiameter™, a solution
based on modules with
removable layers.
The vessel has six engines and
a spare engine generating a total
of 25 MW, which corresponds
to the energy needed for a small
city. Vidar is also advanced when
it comes to technologies like deck
heating, air cooling and wireless
communications.
Efficient now – and tomorrow
When designing Vidar, the marine
engineers of Hochtief in Hamburg,
Germany, and of StoGda in Gdansk,
Poland, chose to copy their good
sealing experience from the
previously built companion ship,
Innovation. They decided to go
for even more Roxtec cable and
pipe transits in order to ensure 12
percent spare capacity.
“We used a lot of Roxtec on
Innovation with satisfying results,
and the inspectors from DNV also
say that Roxtec is a good solution,”
says Andreas Standfuss, electrician
and supervisor of the Vidar crew.
“This time we have included more
spare capacity for future needs. It is
so expensive to make holes and add
cables or pipes later on.”
By planning for future needs,
Hochtief will save time and
money in the long run.

Numerous applications
Prepared for changes
Regardless of where you look
onboard, you find Roxtec
seals. There are 1,900 round or
rectangular openings for cables and
pipes in decks, bulkheads, cabinets
and equipment securely sealed with
Roxtec! There are, for example,
Roxtec SRC frames with adaptable
sealing modules around the cables
leading to and from the engine
room, the switchboard room and
the power supply rooms as well as
the thruster room and the hydraulic
pump areas. These frames have
rounded corners in order to reduce
stress for the steel structure of the
ship. You also find Roxtec seals in
the living quarters and around the
communication cables to the bridge.
Electrical installation company
An-Elec performed most of
the installations at the CRIST
Shipyard in Gdansk. They have
been cooperating with the Roxtec
distributor in Poland, Pionet,
since the mid 90’s and their staff
continuously benefit from quick
service, good technical support,
customized solutions and installation
training programs. They also save
time by using the Roxtec Transit
Designer™ software. An-Elec
always recommends Roxtec sealing
solutions to the shipyards.
Watertight and fire-proof
Roxtec RS PPS seals are used
around the plastic pipes, while
Roxtec RS seals are installed
around the metal pipes of the
sprinkler system. The most
important thing is to prevent water
from spreading if a room onboard
Vidar is flooded, but the multicable transits also provide certified
protection against gas and fire.
“That’s very important, because
offshore it won’t help calling the
fire fighters…”
“Safety inspectors like Roxtec”
Andreas Standfuss, Hochtief Solutions AG.
“Our customers understand that
Roxtec solutions offer more options
than cement or compounds, and
they know that Roxtec means fewer
spare parts than other modularbased systems,” says Andrzej
Syldatk, Chairman of the Board
of An-Elec. “Modern shipbuilding
is ‘alive’, with the design work
made almost at the same time as
the construction, so you must be
prepared for changes – every day.”
WHY USE ROXTEC?
“Roxtec is easy to use, and
we have used it successfully
before. Even the safety
inspectors said that Roxtec is
very efficient and suggested
that we plan for more.”
Would you recommend
Roxtec to others?
“Yes, for me Roxtec is the
best solution.”

and Vidar crew member, Hochtief
