Divine Mercy Sunday This year’s feast of Divine Mercy is rather special because it is celebrated during this extraordinary Jubilee of God’s mercy. We celebrate the second Sunday of Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday. However, this year, we are invited to dispose ourselves to celebrate, meditate and receive God’s love and mercy. It is a wonderful occasion to highlight the call to our church to celebrate God’s mercy not only on this Sunday but also throughout the year. Why would we need a jubilee of Mercy when we celebrate God’s love and mercy every year? Pope Francis declared this year as a jubilee of God’s mercy because we are living in a special time in which mercy is most needed. We need God’s mercy in these times. On taking the thoughts of St. John Paul II, he said that one of the greatest crises the human race faces today is non-expiated guilt. The modern world today is suffering from tremendous guilt brought about by sins that have brought destruction to many lives and families. The scourge of killings, scandals, abuses, crimes has brought to many, grief, pain, hurt, anger, and separation. These human acts brought the terrible weight of collective guilt not only to individuals but a burden to structures and societies. Our modern world is compulsively washing her hands to remove the blood from them, but there is no earthly detergent powerful enough to take the blemishes away. We are most in need of an extraordinary remedy to ease the pain of our souls from guilt. We can talk with psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health doctors but they can help us only to some extent. We need to ease our guilty conscience and an assurance that we are once again accepted, forgiven and loved. This is the remedy that we mostly in need. Whether we realize it or not, we’re longing for healing. We’re yearning for a second, third chance for forgiveness, reconciliation, and a restoration of goodness. We are desperately in need for a chance make up for what has been done. We want atonement. That remedy, that medicine is nothing else but the love and mercy, which God offers to us. The gospel for this Sunday speaks about this healing, this remedy. Jesus after his resurrection appeared to his frightened disciples. They were afraid of the Jews looking for them. They were afraid of the anger or wrath of their master whom they have abandoned. They are not at peace. They are afraid and full of guilt. How will the master treat them when he sees them? However, on appearing to them, Jesus did the opposite. Instead of scolding or castigating them for their faults, he offered them reconciliation, forgiveness. He offered them his gift of peace: Peace be with you. The disciples needed this more than anything else. They needed to hear the words of his forgiveness. They needed to hear that they are once again accepted and still his friends. The gift of Jesus’ resurrection is peace brought about by his love and mercy. Through God’s love and mercy we are again forgiven. We are once again reconciled with him. With his mercy, our guilt is expiated. When guilt is removed, then we can have peace, we can move on, we can again live in his presence. This Jubilee year is given to us to transform everything we do as believers and followers of Christ. This year is given to us to unlock anew the mystery of who God is, how he loves us, who we are in his eyes, and how we’re called to love him and others. May we not waste this opportune time to receive the mercy God has been offering to us?
