Science Grant Gives Students
the Ability to See the Stars!
“How do we know what stars are made of?” This is a question asked regularly by
inquisitive students at Olive Vista. Traditionally, teachers have used words and
pictures to explain the answer to students. But now, thanks to a $1000 grant from
Spectrolab, a subsidiary of Boeing, students will be able to see the answer on a
molecular level just like actual scientists. The grant, which is a product of a growing
relationship between the local corporation and our school, is just one of the ways in
which the company has enhanced the study of science for our students. Earlier this
year, with the sponsorship of Spectrolab, Olive Vista students toured the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory facility. Also, along with the grant, Spectrolab donated a
telescope to enhance students’ ability to see the stars that raise so many questions.
“We are so excited about the support we have received from Spectrolab,” stated
Mr. Knudten, Science Department Chairperson, “It allows us to help our students
not only understand deeper science concepts, but also become excited about the
mysteries of the real world around them.”

“¿Cómo sabemos de que están hechas las estrellas?” Esta es una pregunta que hacen regularmente los inquisitivos estudiantes en Olive Vista. Tradicionalmente, los maestros han usado palabras y fotografías para
explicar la respuesta a los estudiantes. Pero ahora, gracias a una donación de $1000 de Spectrolab, un sub
sidiario de Boeing, los estudiantes podrán ver la respuesta en un nivel molecular tal como los científicos reales.
La donación, la cual es un producto de una creciente relación entre la corporación local y nuestra escuela, es
solo una forma de cómo la compañía ha intensificado el estudio de las ciencias para nuestros estudiantes.
Anteriormente este año, con el patrocinio de Spectrolab, los estudiantes de Olive Vista visitaron el Laboratorio
Jet Propulsion. Además, junto con la beca, Spectrolab dono un telescopio para poner al alcance de nuestros
estudiantes la oportunidad de ver las estrellas que ocasionan tantas preguntas. “Estamos muy contentos por el

Regresa a petición popular, Olive Vista ha empezado a planear su Desayuno de Pancakes para Estudiantes de Quinto
Grado. El evento, programado para el 3 de junio, es una oportunidad para que prospectos estudiantes y sus familias sean
deleitados con un delicioso desayuno con el personal escolar. Después se les invitara a recorrer el plantel para que vean
las maravillosas cosas que Olive Vista les ofrecerá a sus estudiantes en el otoño. Después del recorrido, los padres
disfrutaran de la presentación del grupo folklórico, el equipo de gimnasia y la banda musical de nuestra escuela.

Local Teachers Work Together to
Enhance Student Learning

Entering middle school can be a trying time for a
youngster. Changes in location, having multiple
teachers and differences in curricular expectations
can be challenging for our 6th grade students. This
year members of our Sixth grade department and
teacher representatives from our local feeder schools
have begun to work collaboratively in order to
alleviate some of the stress students experience
during the transition. “The ability to observe at Olive
Vista and communicate with the teachers helps us
understand the academic expectations that our
graduates will have to meet,” stated Nancy Bolita,
a teacher from Sylmar Elementary. “This information is priceless in helping us to prepare our students
for middle school.” The meetings, which include
discussion, modeling lesson structures and review of
instructional strategies, are mutually beneficial.
“I was able to see the context in which math lessons
for my students were previously structured. Now I
can scaffold my lessons more appropriately,”
remarked Mrs. Galvez, a 6th grade teacher. With so
much to gain by all of those involved, the vertical
planning meetings are helping students in our
community reap the reward of success.
Entrar a la secundaria puede ser un tiempo difícil para
un niño. Cambiar de escuela, tener a múltiples maestros
y diferencias en expectativas curriculares pueden ser un
reto para nuestros estudiantes de 6º grado. Este año,
miembros del departamento de sexto grado y maestros
representantes de las escuelas primarias locales han
comenzado a trabajar en colaboración para así aliviar
algo del estrés que los estudiantes experimentan durante
la transición. “La habilidad de observar en Olive Vista
y comunicarse con los maestros nos ayuda a comprender
las expectativas académicas que nuestros graduados
tendrán que alcanzar,” declaró Nancy Bolita, maestra de
la escuela primaria Sylmar. “Esta información es invaluable para ayudarnos a preparar a nuestros estudiantes

nuestra comunidad a cosechar los frutos del éxito.

Olive Vista Opens It’s Doors to Our Future Pandas
Back by popular demand, Olive Vista has begun planning its Fifth Grade Pancake Breakfast. The event,
planned for June 3, is an opportunity for prospective students and their families to be treated to a delicious
breakfast with staff. They then will be invited to tour the campus in order to see the many wonderful things
Olive Vista will offer for its students in the fall. Following the tour, parents will watch performances by our
school’s folklorico, drill team and band. Rachel Kovacs, Sixth grade department chair stated, “The morning is
a fun way to get to know the new students and begin building our relationship with their families.” For more

Communicating with Your Child
about Report Cards!
The beginning of February marks the end of the first semester of the school year. On February 9 report cards
will be mailed home with students’ final grades for their
first semester classes. The counselors at Olive Vista
want to give parents the following tips when speaking
with their children regarding report card grades:

well as successes.
Set realistic goals for improvement.
Be constructive with your criticism about marks.
Find something positive to praise.
