K G AH-64D/WAH-64D Longbow Apache Tras la petición del ejército de EEUU, en 1972, de un helicóptero de ataque avanzado que sustituyera al AH-1 Hueycobra, cinco fabricantes presentaron sus propuestas. Se eligieron dos prototipos para que compitieran, el Bell YAH-63 y el Hughes YAH-64. Este último resultó vencedor y realizó su vuelo inaugural el 30 de septiembre de 1975. Después de varias pruebas, en 1980 se adoptó el Martin-Marietta TADS/PNVS (visor de localización y adquisición de objetivos/sensor de visión nocturna del piloto) para los ataques nocturnos. El nombre de Apache se remonta a 1981. Un año después, empezó a producirse el AH-64A. En 1984, la empresa McDonnell Douglas absorbió a Hughes. Los Apache norteamericanos combatieron a gran escala por primera vez en la operación Tormenta del Desierto de 1991, cuando derrotaron a los vehículos blindados iraquíes. Estos helicópteros estaban armados con 16 misiles antitanque guiados por láser Rockwell AGM-114 Hellfire, cohetes Hydra de 70mm y un cañón M230 de 30mm debajo del morro. En la cabina delantera se sitúan el copiloto y el artillero, mientras que el piloto está en la trasera, más elevada. En 1996, el ejército de EEUU ya había recibido 821 Apache. La experiencia adquirida en la guerra del Golfo de 1991 llevó a la creación del AH-64D Longbow, con un radar de largo alcance muy avanzado, sobre la cabeza del rotor. El Hellfire ATM necesitaba estar en línea recta respeto al objetivo, pero gracias a sistemas de aviónica muy avanzados, normalmente situados en los laterales, el Apache podía detectar y atacar al enemigo sin tener que descubrirse. Otra ventaja del radar consiste en que puede vigilar, barrer y seguir hasta 100 objetivos simultáneamente, en grandes distancias y con malas condiciones de visibilidad. El ejército inglés cuenta con 67 WAH-64D Apache producidos por Westland, con la aviónica más avanzada, gracias a un proyecto común entre Westland, Boeing, el ejército de EEUU y sus fuerzas áreas. Están al servicio del Escuadrón nº 651, AAC, en Middle Wallop, y forman parte de la Nº 16 Brigada de Asalto Aéreo Blindada. Los Países Bajos han retirado sus primeros AH-64A y cuentan con 30 AH-64D, aunque sin el radar Longbow. Otros muchos países también están equipados con el Apache. El Ah-64D tiene 2 motores General Electric GE-T700-GE-701 C y alcanza una velocidad máxima de 261km/h. El WAH-64D inglés tiene dos motores Rolls Royce/Turboca RTM322, que garantizas unas prestaciones similares. Diámetro del rotor principal: 14,63m Longitud (rotores girando): 17,76m Altura: 4,95m PR INT E D IN G E R M A NY AH-64D/WAH-64D Longbow Apache Following a 1972 U.S. Army requirement for a new Advanced Attack Helicopter to replace the AH-1 Hueycobra, five manufacturers submitted proposals. Of these, two were chosen for competition prototypes, the Bell YAH-63 and the Hughes YAH-64, the latter winning the competition and making its first flight on 30 September 1975. After protracted development with several machines, in 1980 the Martin-Marietta TADS/PNVS (Target Acquisition and Designation Sight/Pilot’s Night Vision Sensor) was adopted for the night attack role. The name Apache was adopted in 1981 and production of the AH-64A began in 1982; in 1984 Hughes was absorbed by McDonnell Douglas. Operation Desert Storm in 1991 saw the first major conflict for the U.S. Army Apaches, where they devastated Iraqi armour. The hard-hitting armaments include up to 16 Rockwell AGM-114 Hellfire laser-guided anti-tank missiles, podded 70mm Hydra rockets and the 30mm M230 Chain Gun under the nose. The front cockpit houses the co-pilot/gunner and the pilot occupies the raised rear cockpit. A total of 821 Apaches was delivered to the U.S. Army by 1996. Experiences in the 1991 Gulf War rapidly led to the development of the AH-64D Longbow version, with its very powerful and sophisticated long range radar mounted above the rotor head. The Hellfire ATM requires a direct line of sight with the target, and together with completely new advanced avionics systems, much of it housed in the enlarged box fairings each side of the fuselage, the Apache could now detect and attack targets while remaining virtually hidden from the enemy. Another advantage of the radar is that it can simultaneously survey, scan and track over 1,000 targets at long ranges even in the worst visibility conditions, and of these it can identify 128 with attack priority automatically given to 16 of these for a full load of Hellfires. Not all U.S. Army AH-64Ds carry the Longbow radar, as evidenced by many machines seen in the 2003 Iraq conflict. The British Army has 67 Westland-built WAH-64D Apaches, which have received the most sophisticated avionics upgrades of any versions in a programme conducted jointly with Westlands, Boeing, the U.S. Army and the Army Air Corps; these serve with No.651 Squadron, AAC, at Middle Wallop and with components of No.16 Armoured Air Assault Brigade. The Royal Netherlands Air Force has relinquished its early AH-64As and received its complement of 30 AH-64Ds, which are not fitted with the Longbow radar; several other countries also use Apaches. The AH-64D is powered by two 1,723 shp General Electric GE-T700-GE-701C turboshaft engines, giving a maximum speed of 261km/h (162mph).
