From the Pastor
To the parish family of St. Martha,
The message from the Scriptures for the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time contains a sharp edge for
us who wish to be disciples of Jesus Christ. Certainly the words of Jesus that are recorded in the
Gospel of Mark are anything but gentle. The choices that he lays out for his followers are challenging and
life-changing: “Anyone who is not with me is against me.” Jesus goes on to state that anyone who interferes
with another’s effort to be a disciple, by scandal or bad example, would be better off thrown into the sea with
a millstone around their neck. These are harsh words of warning indeed! Those who hedge on their commitment to embrace Gospel values should also re-examine their lives if they would claim to be his disciples.
Jesus tells his followers that if one’s hand or foot or eye is the occasion of scandal, then they are to “cut it
off” or “pluck it out!” By no means was Jesus speaking literally, but he was clearly insisting that nothing is
worth sacrificing the precious gift of salvation. Those foolish enough to throw away the hope of salvation in
favor of creature comforts probably deserve what they have bargained for. “Better for you to enter the kingdom of God crippled or blind than to be thrown into the fires of Gehenna.”
Each day we encounter numerous tempting attachments that seem so good, so satisfying, and so important for our well-being here on earth. We must frequently choose between these attachments and the
values espoused by Jesus Christ. At times these enticing temptations revolve around our jobs and the opportunity we have for advancement in our career and the assurance of financial security. On some occasions the temptation is about a certain relationship that seems to offer greater personal fulfillment and happiness. However, such a relationship would require that we turn our back on a previous commitment made
through marriage vows. On other occasions it may be the opportunity to right a wrong that was unfairly inflicted on us. Revenge would seem to be so sweet and would teach the other person a lesson. Whatever
the temptation, the simplicity of the choice that lies before us may be what distracts us. We find ourselves
having thoughts like these: surely the Lord does not expect me to pass up the chance to further my career;
surely God would not want me to endure difficult relationships that demand so much time and energy; surely
the Lord would not want me to let go of the opportunity to teach a lesson to a person who has caused great
harm to others. The simple answer may well be, “Yes, that is exactly what the Lord is asking of
me as his disciple!” The Lord wants us to realize that such apparent satisfactions, as the Apostle
James explains in the second reading, very quickly decay and leave those who pursue them with
emptiness and a lack of charity. If we are foolish enough to give in to such temptations, then we
will miss the opportunity to help build the Kingdom of God.

Monica's Hope: Prayerful Support for
Parents of Troubled Children
Don't suffer in silence and solitude. Within our Catholic Community there are many with seriously troubled children of all ages. Problems like addiction, criminality, and mental disorder.
Our experience is that sharing the burden lightens the load. And
in the example of St. Monica you can pray for your child and you
can find peace. The next meeting will be Monday, Oct. 5, 7:309:00 p.m. in Room 1 (Library). Questions? Call Paul and Marcia
Aegerter at 281-812-1288 or e-mail [email protected].

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT
OF THE WEEK
Remembering that we will be judged by
what we do for the least among us, may we
give generously and joyfully to support all
those in need.
“Anyone who gives you a cup of water to
drink because you belong to Christ, amen,
I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.” (Mark 9:41)
Does your life reflect the life of Jesus? Remember, we were made in His image. We
tend to forget this. When others see you, do
they see the face of Jesus? When you look
at others, do you see the face of Jesus in
them?

Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration
CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF DEVOTION TO
PRAYER IN ST. MARTHA’S PARISH
“Could you not watch one hour with Me?” Mark 14:37
Our parish is incredibly blessed to have Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration available in our adoration chapel
twenty-four hours a day. Jesus dwells in the Blessed
Sacrament because of His infinite love for each one of
us, and He is always present there in the Blessed Sacrament patiently waiting for us to come and spend time
with Him.
Listed below are hours that are most in need of adorers
at this time. However, please note that no hour is really
ever “filled” because parishioners are always invited to
choose an hour that works best for them, regardless of
whether or not there are other adorers already there in
prayer.
Both regular adorers and substitutes are needed at this
time. Even if you do not have a regular hour, please feel
free to visit our Blessed Lord at any time knowing that
He is always waiting for us with joyful anticipation.
Second adorers are needed for the following hours:
Sunday: 1-2 AM, 2-3 PM, 3-4 PM. Monday: 11 PM Midnight. Tuesday: 1-2 AM, 2-3 AM. Wednesday: 12 AM. Thursday: 1-2 AM, 3-4 PM. Friday: 1-2 AM.
Saturday: 1-2 AM, 3-4 AM, 9-10 PM.

Ministerio Hispano
