Dear parishioners,
I am writing to ask for your assistance in strengthening our Diocese of San Jose with your
participation in the Annual Diocesan Appeal 2011. This year‟s theme is “Our Parish, Our Diocese,
Together in Christ;” which is fitting because ADA funds benefit all the parishes and missions of the
Diocese by supporting all the different parish ministries and services. As Bishop Patrick J. McGrath
remarked in announcing this year‟s theme, we are all connected to one another as one people of faith in
our Lord, Jesus Christ.
I am asking you again this year to make an effort, according to your financial situation, so that we
can meet our goal of $42,860. In the past year, we accomplished and exceeded our goal. I appreciate
your continued support.
With my deepest gratitude, I offer you my prayers for your welfare and that of your family and
friends.

Una vez más les escribo esta carta para pedirles su ayuda para fortalecer a nuestra Diócesis de San
José participando en el “Llamado Anual Diocesano” ADA 2011. El tema de este año es: “Nuestra
Parroquia, Nuestra Diócesis, Juntos en Cristo”, el cual es muy apropiado pues los fondos benefician
a todas las parroquias y sus diferentes ministerios. Tal como el Obispo Patrick J. McGrath lo ha dicho,
todos estamos conectados en uno con el otro por la fe en nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
Les pido que otra vez hagamos un esfuerzo, acorde a su situación económica, para alcanzar la meta
de $42,860. Lo hemos logrado en el pasado y espero que lo logremos este año también.

Dear friends,
Receive from Jamaica Advent greetings and blessings! This is to
let you know that I am alive and well, far away in body but never
far in spirit. You the people of Christ the King have always been
in my prayers and I know you have prayed for me. I am happily
serving on the Diocesan Evangelization Team with a Maryknoll
priest and several Jamaicans. Some highlights: In November we
brought out Anne Grycz to help us set up a Jamaican version of
the ILM. The first weekend session of the Institute for Servant
Ministry was a huge success! I also serve as informal chaplain to
a local orphanage an AIDS hospice. If you go to my blog
(www.dsj.org/MissionJamaica) you will see photos of the ISM,
Blessed Assurance and Hope Hospice. I have a request: please
write to someone at Hope Hospice. Any of the patients would be
thrilled beyond words to get a letter. The blog tells you how to do
that (and how to contact me). Thank you for your continued
prayers. I pray that all of you have the most blessed Advent and
Christmas seasons.

FEAST OF FAITH
The Greeting
At several points during the liturgy, the presider greets
us with the words, “The Lord be with you.” These simple words
are not like the greetings that we exchange all day long—our
“good mornings,” our “hellos” and “how are yous.” This liturgical greeting has roots deep in the Old Testament. In the book of
Ruth, the words “the Lord be with you” are spoken by Boaz to
the harvesters who are laboring in his fields (2:4); in the book of
Judges, an angel speaks similar words to Gideon (6:12), where
they are words of promise: for soon Gideon will lead his oppressed people to victory and freedom. For us, the words become
a greeting of peace, a prayer that the Lord will indeed be with us,
and a reminder of his promise to be with us always, to the end of
the world (Matthew 28:20). Our response—“And also with you,”
soon to be “And with your spirit”—returns to the presider this
prayer for the Lord‟s presence. As we know from the scriptures, a
prayer for the Lord‟s presence is no small thing, for when God
comes in our midst, God brings healing, grace, and challenge.
God‟s presence transforms us.

FIESTA DE LA FE
Del cumplimiento a la espiritualidad
La Eucaristía dominical ha de ser más que un mero
cumplimiento de uno de los mandamientos de la santa madre
Iglesia. La participación plena, consciente y activa en la celebración litúrgica supone ser un punto no negociable en la vida
de los cristianos. No es del mero cumplimiento del precepto
donde obtenemos lo necesario para continuar nuestra vida
(aunque puede darse), es más bien, de asumir en nuestra vida lo
que implica celebrar la Eucaristía. Es, creo yo, hacernos eco de
la voz de los mártires del Norte de África que, ante la posibilidad del martirio y la experiencia de la tortura a causa de su fe,
fueron capaces de afirmar: “No podemos ser cristianos sin la
Eucaristía”. Resulta obvio que la celebración es parte de esta
cláusula, pero más allá está el atar la vida a ese misterio que se
celebra; el transformar nuestra vida por la palabra proclamada,
vivir con la frescura de tratarnos como hermanos y hermanas,
hacernos pan para que todos coman; trabajar por la justicia como una posibilidad que puede comenzar ahora mismo y que
como resultado tendrá la misericordia y la compasión hacia los
demás. Si en realidad celebramos la plenitud del sacramento,
domingo a domingo, no podremos ser cristianos sin la Eucaristía, sin convertirnos en lo que celebramos.

Chuyến Xe Lửa Tự Do
Xin cùng chúng tôi mừng ngày Sinh Nhật Martin Luther
King băng việc họp cùng nhau và trẩy chuyến xe lửa tới San
Francisco thành một ngày tưởng nhớ và những tham gia hoạt
động để giữ lại Đời Sống, Truyền Thuyết, và Di Sản của
Tiến Sĩ Martin Luther King Jr. vào ngày 17/1/2011 lúc 9g30

Lời Chào
Ở nhiều chỗ trong giờ phụng vụ, vị chủ tế chào chúng ta với câu,
"Chúa ở cùng anh chị em." Những lời đơn giản này không giống
như những lời chào mà chúng ta trao đổi suốt ngày như lời "chào
ban mai", "chào bạn", và "bạn có khoẻ không." Lời chào phụng
vụ này đã có từ lâu trong Cựu Ước. Trong sách Bà Rút, câu
"Chúa ở cùng quý vị" đã được phát ra từ miệng ông Boaz tới các
thợ gặt đang làm trong cánh đồng (2:4); trong sách Thủ Lãnh,
một thiên thần nói lời tương tự tới Gideon (6:12), từ đó chúng là
những lời đoan hứa: vì chẳng bao lâu Gideon sẽ dẫn dắt những
người bị áp bức tới chiến thắng và tự do. Với chúng ta, những lời
nói trở thành một lời chào bình an, một lời cầu nguyện mà Thiên
Chúa sẽ thực sự ở với chúng ta, và là một điều nhắc nhở những
lời hứa của Ngài là luôn ở với chúng ta, tới ngày tận cùng của thế
giới (Matthêu 28:20). Chúng ta đáp lại "Và ở cùng cha," chẳng
bao lâu sẽ là "và cùng với thần khí của bạn" trở lại với vị chủ tế
lời cầu nguyện này vì sự hiện diện của Chúa. Như chúng ta biết
từ kinh thánh, một lời cầu nguyện với sự hiên diện của Chúa
không phải là một chuyện nhỏ đâu, vì khi Chúa tới ngự ở giữa
chúng ta, Chúa mang sự chữa lành, ân sủng, và thử thách. Sự
hiện diện của Chúa biến đổi chúng ta.

En la década de 1940, Antoine de SaintExupéry escribió El Principito, una famosa historia de niños. El Principito vive en un pequeño
asteroide donde pasa su tiempo dedicado al cuidado de una hermosa rosa. El Principito visita la
Tierra donde se encuentra con el Zorro, que le
pide al Principito que lo domestique. El Zorro le
dice que domesticar quiere decir hacerse responsable, tal como hace con su rosa. Nuestra
parroquia es nuestro hogar espiritual y fuente de
vida mediante el culto divino, las amistades y
las actividades compartidas. Obviamente necesitamos de nuestra parroquia o no estuviésemos
aquí. El tiempo que le damos a Dios y dedicamos a los demás hacen más estrecho el vínculo
entre nosotros. Dios nos ha “domesticado” y se
ha hecho responsable de nosotros ahora y para
siempre. Lo justo sería que todos nosotros nos
hiciéramos responsables de la Iglesia de Dios, el
pueblo de Dios y el mundo de Dios. ¿Estás
cumpliendo tu parte?

In the 1940s, Antoine de Saint Exupéry wrote a
famous children‟s story, The Little Prince. The
Little Prince inhabits a small asteroid, where he
spends his time devotedly caring for one beautiful rose. The Little Prince visits Earth, where he
meets the Fox, who asks the Little Prince to
tame him. The Fox says taming means being
responsible, like the Prince is for his rose. Our
parish is our spiritual home and a source of life
through worship, friendships, and shared labor.
We obviously need our parish, or we wouldn‟t
be here. The time that we give to God and to
each other makes the connections among us
stronger. God has “tamed” us and is responsible
for us in the here and now and on into the future. It seems only right that all of us, in turn,
are responsible for God‟s church, God‟s people,
and God‟s world. Are you doing your part?

một câu chuyện thiếu nhi nổi tiếng là, "Vị Hoàng Tử
Nhỏ". Chuyện Vị Hoàng Tử Nhỏ sống trong một
