Letter From The Pastor
Dear Parishioners:
Our world can be a terrible place at times. Natural disasters cause such destruction and
death that lives are changed forever. Man-made disasters cause even more damage. These
are more properly called sin since they result from one’s decision to disobey God’s law.
It is a sinful world that kills — her children through abortion, war, drugs, — her adults
through war, murders, adultery, violence — her purity through pornography, immodesty,
sexual license without respect for marriage, etc. I don’t suppose many, if any, would disagree with the
above. It could be easy to surrender to despair and or depression. Just when we get to that point something,
somewhere arises that reminds us of the strength of God’s grace in the world. His truth shines forth in a dark
world even amidst the tragedies.
A report from Guatemala reveals the story of Angel Ariel Escalante who was walking home from school.
A group of thugs ambushed Angel Ariel Escalante Perez while he was walking home from school. They
handed him a gun and gave him a heartbreaking choice: shoot a bus driver or be killed. It happens that
Angel’s father is also a bus driver.
To his credit, Angel refused to go along with this. He absolutely refused to kill anyone. Then, the thugs
gave him one last choice – they could throw him off a bridge, or they could chop him up with machetes. He
chose the bridge.
The thugs threw him 443 feet off the Incienso Bridge, one of Central America’s longest bridges. Angel
landed in thick brush below, where he miraculously survived. His family found him 72 hours later and rushed
him to the hospital; however, he died in the hospital 15 days later from his injuries, according to the Mirror.
There is a chance that, if he had been found sooner, doctors could have saved him, they said.
"The father of the child said his son had been gone for 72 hours and told him that six alleged
kidnappers threw him off because he refused to kill a bus driver,” said Guatemalan firemen’s spokesman
Javier Soto. "The child was asked how he would prefer to die - whether it would be through stabbing or by
being thrown off a bridge - and he chose the latter. The fall was from 135 meters. Usually people who jump
or are thrown from there do not survive."
This story from Central America is a reminder that God’s grace can help us overcome, even in terrible
circumstances, temptation to do evil. We never have to give into evil. St. Thomas More knew his family
would suffer greatly when he refused to recognize King Henry’s claim to be the head of the Church and thus
divorce his wife. He also realized that God must come first at all times and in every choice. He was not the
only one who would suffer by his choice, but he knew it was the choice for righteousness that would give
hope and vision to his family.
It is hard to imagine the pain Angel’s family felt at the terrible news. At the same time, they will always
have the knowledge he chose goodness over evil. These are the kind of choices that saints make and serve
as examples of God’s providential will guiding the course of history. His death will never make sense except
to show that even the young are capable of holiness.
Some things are worth dying for in this world. It is not fair or just, but it is true. Let none of us so fear
death that Evil weaves his way into our hearts. Fear never leads us to joy or peace. Deep in Angel’s family’s
heart is a peace that a good son, brother, friend has shown the world a wonderful lesson.
Satan is drawn to fear because he cannot stand his own shadow. He hides in the darkness and only
shows himself in illusionary form. God is the absence of fear and thus his works are done in the light. He has
nothing to fear since he will only choose what is good. As we put on the new self (Eph. 4:24) let us pledge to
walk only in the light, only in righteousness, only with deeds praising God even if it cost us our lives. In this
case, we will have saved our lives — not a bad deal.
Pax et bonum,
Msgr. Bill

CCSC is helping 6,500 students? WOW! HOW CAN I HELP?
1. Sponsor a student! CCSC’s greatest need for the
Back To School program is financial backing. It costs only
$45.00 to provide each child with a comprehensive packet
of academic supplies and new clothing/shoes in line with
each campus’s uniform requirements. Please consider giving or organizing an effort to bring in funding for this
much-needed service – at your place of business, worship,
recreation center or anywhere you have community relationships that care about children. Donations of any
amount can be contributed in one of two ways:
• Donate online! Your gift can be designated to
Back To School: www.ccschouston.org
• Donate by mail! Simply send a check (payable to
CCSC with “Back To School” in the note section) to
CCSC, P. O. Box 27924, Houston, Texas, 77227.
2. Volunteer! You can contribute your time and energy
to this worthy cause or help inspire others to volunteer.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Customs surrounding wedding rites are often in tension
with our liturgical tradition. Sometimes practices are
almost forced on engaged couples. Anyone who has ever
planned a wedding knows how quickly the invoices
expand. A hundred dollars here, a hundred there, often for
non‑essentials, when more deeply traditional practices, like
an expression of charity for the poor, fall by the wayside.
One such practice often labeled as “deeply traditional” is
the aisle runner for the bride. Actually, the American
tradition is to clean our church buildings, in contrast to
European village churches, which often had dirt or
cobblestone floors. There, a band of linen (rented) or a
carpet of flowers might be set in place for a bridal party.
Here, plastic roll‑ups are procured and positioned by the
ushers for the bride’s entrance. The problems are many, not
the least of which is that there is no “bride’s entrance” in
our official liturgy. Another is that in a wedding Mass, the
communicants have to navigate the treacherous aisle with
the sometimes-slippery runner. The aisle runner is neither a
treasure nor a tradition, and by omitting it, the couple who
asks for canned goods for the poor to be brought to church
at their wedding Mass will find an extra hundred dollars or
so for the cause! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Society of St. Vincent de Paul
The Gospel tells us “This is my beloved
Son. Listen to him.” By “listening” we are
able to live the gospel. Gospel living is
something so simple as taking the time to
listen to those who need to spill out their hearts when
seeking help. Through your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul you enable the members of the Society to
become a “listening heart” to the hungry, the homeless
and the struggling poor.

Dios responde a

No buscamos a
No podemos tener relación
No
Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
