In our readings today we have the common theme of reaching out to those outside of the faith with an
evangelizing spirit, even if Jesus did so in a sort of backhanded manner, He still drew the Canaanite woman into
belief. When we consider evangelization of our faith today many in the Church believe that it should be the job
of the clergy. Shouldn’t the priests and bishops be the ones to spread the gospel in the world today? Well then,
let us crunch the numbers. One survey from the Vatican, states that there were 410,593 priests in the world in
2010, the number of bishops in the world was 5,104 and the number of Catholics in the world was
1,196,000,000 (that is 1.196 billion). So even if we subtract the priests and the bishops from the number of
Catholics that still puts the clergy as less than 0.04% of the Catholic population in the world today. Now the
question is, who would be the more effective evangelizers for the Church, the much less than 1% of the Catholics
who are clergy or the 99.96% of Catholics who are out in the world every day encountering the billions of people
in the world who are not Catholic? I believe that the math speaks for itself. Now the question beacons, how do
I, as a lay Catholic, become an effective evangelizer? I believe that the answer is engagement, engagement in
the sacraments, particularly those of the Eucharist and Reconciliation. Engagement in other things like reading
the Bible, reading a good Catholic book now and then, maybe about a saint or some other aspect of the Church
so you can be more informed about your Catholic faith. One might also attend a class or join a prayer group or
even start a prayer group or bible study with some friends. There are any number of ways and materials one can
use to engage one’s self in the faith and we have these going on all the time here at St Joan of Arc.
The most critical way of evangelizing the faith to the world, however, is the living of the Catholic faith in your
life in order to reveal to the world how a Catholic Christian loves one another as their neighbor as a
demonstration of how they love their God.

PASTOR´S MESSAGE
E
SAINT JOAN OF ARC CATHOLIC SCHOOL:
AN EXCITING 2014-2015!
very school year starts with excitement as the summer
winds down and expectations turn to "What will school be
like this year? Who are the new teachers? What will be
different?" I am personally very excited to give you a little pre-view of
our school for this upcoming 2014-2015 school year. First of all, as
most of you know, we have a new principal, Mrs. Caroline Roberts. She
comes to our school from Saint Jerome School in Fort Lauderdale after
serving there as Assistant Principal, interim principal on three occasions,
and teacher. I am impressed with Mrs. Robert's’ experience, enthusiasm,
energy level, new ideas and collaborative leadership style. We have
already developed an excellent professional relationship and are working
together to advance our school and to serve our students and families
in the absolute best way possible with a true synergism of church
and school.
I am most impressed with the changes for this coming year in the area
of digital learning. All middle school students will have take home iPads
to enhance their learning during and after classes. In addition, there will
be many new enrichment programs:
1. STEAMteam and Robotics (In a grade school!)
2. Hydroponic & Aeroponic Plant Growth Technology (garden in quadrangle)
3. Spanish taught Pre-K-3 thru eighth grade (wow)
4. Spanish and French Clubs (practice, practice, practice)
5. Arts enhancements: Ballet, Hip Hop, Drama, & Band
6. Sudent e-Newsletter and Youth Toastmasters
7. Creative Culinary Club (I can't wait to taste the first creations)
8. These new initiatives complement our already existing Sports Clubs:
- Baseball
- Basketball
- Cheerleading
- Cross Country
- Flag Football
- Soccer
- Softball
- Tennis
- Volleyball
In addition, there are many other Extra-Curricular Activities such as Altar
Servers, Bell Choir, Band, Video Club, Tech Club, Chess Club, Irish Step
Dance, Lectors, Cantors, Yearbook, Angel Choir, Student Council and
Edge, (Whew) and many others to help enrich the lives of our students.
As your Pastor, I have tremendous confidence in our school as a learning
environment that educates, supports, and forms the faith of our children.
As a most important ministry of Saint Joan of Arc Church, our school's
faith formation, moral and character formation, intellectual and social,
cultural and health and fitness formation express the love of God and of
this parish for our young members.
Some additional great news. During this coming school year and for
several years into the future, our physical plant will be improved with the
weather secure enclosure of our Gazebo, the building of a New Mercy
Center, new athletic field, and new technology and learning enhancement
centers in our school. Don't miss more news in the upcoming months
about these exciting quality investments that will position us to be
even more of a significant and relevant presence in Boca Raton as
Church and School.
I want to thank our administration, faculty staff and all parents who
invest in our school and by your support help to make it great! It is no
accident that in the past eight years, fifteen Valedictorians or Salutatorians
in our local high schools have been Saint Joan of Arc graduates. Talk
about a solid foundation for future success!
Please continue to pray for, advance and publicize our parish and our
fantastic school.
- Msgr. Michael D. McGraw

FROM OUR SJA SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
Dear SJA parents and students,
Welcome! I hope you had a fabulous summer! It is an honor to be part of the SJA family and it is a privilege to serve your children.
Thank you for choosing St. Joan of Arc and for entrusting us with your child.
I have been looking forward to meeting SJA students, and parents, as well as my new colleagues. I have been quite impressed by the work ethic
and caliber of our staff. Our faculty had a retreat this week, which was facilitated by our DRE, Sr. Vivian Gonzalez. The focus of the retreat,
“Education as a Vocation”, is an excellent reminder for why Catholic education is so valuable for our children. Teachers were reminded that
their students are a gift from God and they in turn are a gift from God to their students. Each classroom is “holy ground” as we need to focus
on the whole child as we prepare them to be disciples. Teachers took time out from their busy schedules to reflect on what made them choose the
education field; discussed some of their best teaching experiences; and what gift they have to give to the students. Some of the
gifts the teachers stated they look forward to sharing with their students include: enthusiasm, love, optimism, encouragement, determination,
innovation, compassion, patience, joy, thankfulness and perseverance. In other words, your child is going to receive so much more than academic
excellence! Teachers received a journal for writing their teaching experiences throughout the year and will also be praying for you,
their students and each other as they embark on a new beginning… the 2014-2015 school year!
“Christ is the reason for this school. He is the unseen but ever present teacher in its classes.
He is the mold of its faculty and the inspiration of its students.”

“PRAYER FOR PEACE IN IRAQ AND IN THE MIDDLE EAST”
The US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is asking all parishes to
offer special prayer on August 17 for Peace in Iraq. Below is the full text
of Patriarch Sako’s Prayer for Peace.
Lord,
The plight of our country is deep
and the suffering of Christians is severe and frightening.
Therefore, we ask you Lord
to spare our lives, and to grant us patience, and courage
to continue our witness of Christian values
with trust and hope.
Lord,
peace is the foundation of life;
Grant us the peace and stability that will enable us
to live with each other without fear and anxiety,
and with dignity and joy.
Glory be to you forever. Amen.

appreciated by our priests. Please continue to pray daily, using the
monthly calendar as a guide. The guide can be found on the Events
Calendar of the website. Go to www.diocesepb.org/events and click on

2014 CANDIDATE QUESTIONNAIRE PROJECT:
WHAT’S A CATHOLIC VOTER TO DO?
Catholic faithful are urged to choose their political leaders according to
principle, not party affiliation or mere self-interest. To help parishioners become informed on where candidates stand on key issues, the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops has polled those running for U.S. Congress,
the Florida Legislature, and Florida Governor. To see how candidates appearing on the August 26 Primary Election / November 4 General Election
ballot responded to the questionnaire, visit www.flaccb.org/CQP/2014.

MISA EN ESPAÑOL TODOS LOS SABADOS A LAS 6:30pm.
Necesitamos flores,
cantores, decoradores de las mesas de la
recepción, y preparación del menú etc.
VOLUNTARIOS Llamen para participar en
la organización de este evento.

El sábado 6 de septiembre a las 4:30 pm
nos reunimos en Mercy Center para decorar
con flores a la Virgen. A las 6:00pm salimos en Procesión, por las
afueras de la Iglesia. A las 6:30 pm celebramos la Santa Misa
dominical.
