REPORT ON THE AMPHIPODA. 231 1849. NICOLET, IIERCULE. Historia fisica y politica de Chile segun documentos adquiridos en esta republica durante doce años de residencia en ella y publicada bajo los auspicios del supremo gobierno por Claudio Gay ciudadano chileno. MDCCCXLIX. Zoologia. Tomo tercero. Paris, The Crustacea occupy pages 115 to 318 of this third volume. In the first division, "Crustaccos maxilados," the "Anfipodos" and "Lamodipodos" are respectively the third and fourth orders. The Amphipods, pages 226 to 249, include the two subdivisions, "Gamarianos" and "Hiperinoas." In the former, Talitrns elii1en.is, n. 8., is established on a damaged " 7'. antennis brevibus; specimen with the definition, pedibus anterioribus gracililnz.; levi, ad latera uoso." A new follows, thus described eorpore supra genus Antenna; superiores niinhintr, ineriores [inferioribus] inulto ORQUESTOIDEA.-OROHESTOIDEA. breviores; articuio pimo lab, lpa(lribor1ni, joritter depresso ; secundo jraeili, eyiindrieo ; tertio serum/v breviori, 1raeiii, eiiindraeeo, ligilla hrevi.si,na, quinque artirulata tniuiijo. The fuller description concludes with the observation, "los apendices do los anillos abdominales son cortos y bifidos; ci ultimo segmento Cs muy corto y repentinamente replegado por bajo, lo que da la estremidad posterior del cuorpo un aspecto truncado," to which he appends the remark by way of note, "la forma de las antennas y la del cuerpo de estos Crustaceos representan t los Talitros, mientras quo la disposicion de sus patas dcl segundo par los incorpora a las Orquescias: pero las pata-quijadas estornas y sobre todo la forma do los tabs palpiformes los separan completaniente, siendo intermediarios de ambos gneros, con quienes tienen muchas relaciones." The type species, Orchestoidea taberculata, pl. 2, fig. 4, is defined as "0. flavescen.s; cwpore luberculato; articulo prirno peduncuit antennarum e.cternarumn ext us bituberculato; fronte in meilio leviter angulato; pedibus viulo.sis." Nothing is said about the female. He then describes OrchestiG chilensis, M.-Edw.; Ore/i estia brevicornis, n. s. ; " Orchestia (Jayi," n. a.; Amphitoe cimileneis, n. a., pl. 2, fig. 5; "Amphitue Qayi," n. a., p1. 2, fig. 6. The new genus Nicea is thus defined :-" Antenuw superiores cwteris breviores. Caput Oculi ovati, oblique di?positi. Pedes breves, primi et sceundi pa?* subehiliforines; manibus breln8sirnis. Mandibul brevjsi, miw, bilobat, muitiden/iculat, non palpiger. Lahiuni sternaie maximum." To the general description he adds that he has formed this genus upon a specimen which has various affinities with Amphithoä, but differs in the absence of the mandibular paip and the relative length of the anteunLe, bringing it near to Talilru.s, and above all by the considerable development of the buccal portion and the form of the maxillipeda; its dilated (rechoncho) body resembles that of TaUtrus. The type species, "Nicea L/uca8ii," p1. 2, fig. , is defined "N. obscure fusco-oire8cenmm; cnporm brevi, erasso, rurvato, convexo; pedibu8 mazillaribus erternis fortiter luberculatis." He next gives Gammarus chilenais, n. a. This is followed by what Nicolet supposed to be a new genus, Lalaria, thus defined:"Antenn. superiore8 gracile8, elongati, articulo secundo pedunculi jnino longiore, cijlindrico, tertio h2'evi, itigefla(o. Antenni inferiore8 pedunculo elongatissirno, tigella brevioiima.
