JUNE 2013
Principal’s Letter
Dear Parents & Guardians,
Thank you for a wonderful first year at Arnold Elementary! I have enjoyed getting to know all
of the Arnold families and look forward to another great year next year. I would also like to say
a special thank you to the Arnold Elementary Staff for their support and collaboration. As you
know, they are amazing!
We have a couple staff who will be moving on to new horizons. Mrs. Edwards will be teaching
art at Benfield Elementary next year in order to be closer to home and her family. We will miss
her and appreciate her leadership in the arts integration program. Mrs. Gatling will be a reading
teacher at Georgetown East. Even though we will miss her, this is a wonderful leadership opportunity for her and we wish her the best. Mrs. McGrath will be moving out of the area this
summer. We will miss her and wish her the best in her new life as a newlywed.
May your summer days be long and relaxing!
See you in August,
Shauna Kauffman

SUMMER HOURS
Starting June 19th through August 6th, the school office will be open
from 7:30 a.m.—3:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday. Our summer staff will
be taking vacations and enjoying time off as well, so before stopping
by, I would encourage you to cal ahead for an appointment to be sure
the person you need to see will be available.
ATTENTION FIFTH GRADE FAMILIES
The fifth grade promotional assembly will be held on Friday, June 14th
at 8:30 a.m. in the school cafeteria. This is an exciting event for students and marks a major milestone in their young lives. Please be
mindful there is limited parking and seating available.
CHANGES FOR NEXT YEAR
Please notify the office now if you know of any changes for your children for next school year, i.e. moving, transferring, new address, withdrawing, etc. There is paperwork that we need to complete that sometimes requires information from the current classroom teacher. The
sooner we know, the better information we can provide and the easier
we can make the transition for you family. Please use the form in this
newsletter to notify the office staff. Thank you in advance for your
help with this matter.
News from the Media Center
Summer Reading
Studies show that students lose ground in reading each year during summer break.
Help your child maintain and improve on the gains they made this year. Making
daily reading a routine is easy in the summer and can easily carry over into the
school year. Want to try something different?
Audio books (free at the library and great for car trips)
Tumble books (free through AACPL website
http://www.tumblebooks.com/library/asp/home_tumblebooks.asp
Magazines & newspapers (if you are on vacation encourage your children
to read local newspapers)
Graphic Novels
Maps (taking a car trip? Find a road map and have your children follow
along—combines reading & math)
Encourage your children to keep a reading log
Sign up at your local public library for the summer reading program.
Stuck? Feel free to email me at [email protected] for ideas
Wherever your summer travels take you keep a book by
your side! Relax and Read!
Thank you to the wonderful Arnold parents who helped in the media center
this year especially to Mrs. Perron, Mr. Perron, Mrs. Wikar, Mrs. Ostrin,
Mrs. Killelea and Mrs. Decker. Your help made all the difference this year.
Thank you to the PTA for supporting the media center with three very
successful Book Fairs as well as additional funding. Our collection is slowly
coming into its own. A very special thank you to the Fifth Grade class for the
gift of lounge chairs. Look for them in the fall in our new reading nook!
BAND NEWS
Wow! All the performances this year were absolutely wonderful: Winter Concert, Bands by the Bay, performing over the announcements and Spring Concert.
Mr. Heist, band instructor at Broadneck High, compiled a list of high
school students who are excited about teaching privately over the summer.
Many of these students are alumni and have excelled in the music programs
through middle and high school. Private lessons are a great way enhance a
natural talent, have more one-on-one instruction and simply keep the
knowledge and skills up until we meet again in the fall. If your child is interested in private lessons, please let me know. These high school students are
local and have flexible summer hours.
I also have a list of local private teachers in the Annapolis area. Please let me
know if you would like me to forward the list..
Finally, remember enthusiasm will vary from time to time. This is normal. Please do not get discouraged. The end result, making music, is definitely worth it!
Thanks to all the students for a great instrumental year this year. Best wishes
to all 5th graders who soon will move on to middle school. I look forward to
teaching the new 3rd and returning 4th graders next year in the band program.
I hope you all take advantage of all the opportunities that will come your way
in the future.

NEWS FROM THE HEALTH ROOM
Dear Parents,
According to Anne Arundel County Public Schools Medication Guidelines, all medication must
be picked up by parents at the end of the school year or it will be discarded. Please make arrangements with the health room staff to pick up your child’s medication on or before 6/14/13
by 1:00PM.
If you anticipate that your child will require medication next school year, we would like to encourage you to contact your physician over the summer and have the PARENT REQUEST TO
ADMINISTER MEDICATION AT SCHOOL form completed. This form can be found online

can be given by the school staff until this form is completed and signed by the physician and a

Annual Asthma Camp For Kids
Monday, August 5 - Friday August 9, 2013
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Woods Memorial
Presbyterian Church in
Severna Park
Every year, area children with asthma have an opportunity to learn more about
asthma, make new friends and enjoy a fun day-camp experience in a safe atmosphere.
Campers participate in a variety of activities including asthma education, swimming,
arts & crafts and much more.
Staffed by Baltimore Washington Medical Center’s pediatric nurses and respiratory
therapists, Airways helps children age 6-12 learn how to manage their asthma through daily
educational sessions. Children build their confidence and gain self-esteem at Airways by
sharing experiences with other kids with asthma.
To receive a registration packet,
call 410-787-4484 or download a copy from
our Web site at mybwmc.org
The cost of the camp is $70. Some scholarships are available, based on need.
