Dear Glen Burnie Families,
March has been a busy month for our Gophers! Prom tickets went on sale March 23rd, launching the beginning of the graduation season. We are
looking forward to Prom on May 9th and Graduation on June 1st.
The theater company held performances of Shakespeare Shorts. If you have not attended a GBHS Theater production this year, you are missing
out! We have a truly talented group of young actors in our student body. March also brought success to our exemplary culinary arts program. I
would like to congratulate the first ever Glen Burnie High School ProStart Culinary Team for winning the People's Choice Award at the 11th Annual
Maryland ProStart Student Invitational!
The last week in March, we celebrated College Week at Glen Burnie High School. Students enthusiastically wore the college gear of their choice.
Classrooms and office were decorated to reflect the alma maters of our staff. Most importantly, teachers held conversations with students about
the importance of higher education in today’s economy. Many of our students choose to enter the military or the work force directly after high
school graduation. We celebrate and encourage career readiness as well as college acceptance. We will continue to vocalize the many options
for college and careers to your children, and we hope you will continue to join us in encouraging our young Gophers to aim high when making
plans for their future.
We completed the first phase of PARCC assessments in March. The GBHS staff worked together to ensure that your child was successful in navigating and understanding the process of the test. Our students worked with great determination on these rigorous assessments, and we are quite
proud of them! We will have the End of Year PARCC assessments beginning in April.
We had over 300 students participate in mock Advanced Placement (AP) exams this month. The Mock AP tests give students a simulation of what
to expect on the real AP exams in May. If your child is enrolled in an AP course, please be sure they have turned in registration forms and are
prepared for their exam. The media center has a number of new test prep books available to AP students.
On April 10th, the 3rd marking period will draw to a close. It is important that your child uses the first week back from Spring Break to complete any
missing assignments before the end of the marking period. As we enter the final quarter of the school year, students have a fresh opportunity to
earn the grades they want and need for college.
This is also the time of year when course selection occurs for the 2015-16 academic year. Your child should have met with their counselor to select classes for next year. Please take time to discuss course selections with your child. We encourage students to strive to challenge themselves,
be it through Honors, Advanced Placement, advanced electives, or a vocational program.
We are close to the end of the school year; however, we still have a lot of work to complete in a short period. Students are reminded to get plenty
of rest and continue to come prepared to work hard. Our staff continues to focus diligently on our three core goals: increased AP scores, increased SAT participation and improved student behavior. We know that in partnership with our GBHS families, we will achieve the best for our
community’s children.

Junior, Justin Wilkie, for receiving the President's Volunteer Service Award, which is sponsored by Prudential Financial and
the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). The award recognizes outstanding community service by
young Americans. Congratulations, Justin!
Sophomore Chavela Bell’s artwork was selected to hang in the Comptroller's office as a part of
the Maryland Masters Art Exhibit. The Maryland Masters Award program seeks to recognize
public school students who have displayed extraordinary artistic skills, talents, and a vision for
Maryland’s future. She was honored at an awards ceremony on February 27 th at Severn River
Middle School.
The first ever Glen Burnie High School ProStart Culinary Team for winning the People's Choice Award at the 11th Annual Maryland ProStart Student Invitational! Seniors Malik Carter, Alonso Eusubio, and Paige Wellington along with junior Brady Hagedorn
and sophomore Maddie Chenoweth created a three course, gourmet meal in one hour, using only two butane burners as a heat
source.
Joshua Davis for advancing to the Maryland State History Day Competition on May 2 to the University of Maryland. Thank you for
representing Glen Burnie High School for the Leadership & Legacy Theme.

The Show Place Arena is large enough to accommodate all seniors in a single ceremony, to provide each senior with eight
guest tickets, and to provide the guests air-conditioned comfort. The Senior Newsletter supplement is to give you
information about approved senior activities, arrangements for Commencement, and other important facts for seniors.
Please keep this supplement as a reference.
Graduating seniors who violate Board Policy JCC are subject to the provisions as stated in Administrative Regulation JCCRAC: Alcoholic Beverages, Controlled Dangerous Substances, or Other Intoxicants. This regulation states in relevant part
under Section D., Procedure, Paragraph 6:
Penalty for Violation by Graduating Students
a.
Graduating students who violate Board policies on possession, consumption, or distribution of
alcoholic beverages, controlled dangerous substances, counterfeit controlled dangerous substances, noncontrolled substances as defined by Article 27, Section 286B of the Annotated Code of Maryland, or other
intoxicant at any time during the last four weeks of school prior to the last scheduled day for graduating
students, or during the time between the last scheduled day and the graduation ceremony, whether the
activity takes place on school buses, within a school building or upon any school property, or during any
school, school related, or Board sponsored activity, whether held on school property or at locations off
school property, including private clubs, businesses, or commercial establishments, shall be prohibited
from participation in all senior activities, including proms, award ceremonies, and graduation ceremonies.
b.
Diplomas earned by students denied participation in graduation ceremonies will be available upon
request in the office of the appropriate school principal on the first workday following graduation ceremonies.
Because the last scheduled day for graduating students this year is May 28 th , 2015 the effective date under the
“last four weeks” provision is April 30th, 2015. The last day a graduating senior can be enrolled in the
Alternative to Drugs Program, Responsible Actions Program, or Anti-Tobacco Use Program is April 15, 2015.

Last Day for Graduating Seniors
PARTICIPATION IN COMMENCEMENT
The Commencement Ceremony is intended to recognize those seniors who have completed all requirements for a
Maryland High School Diploma. Any senior who does not meet all requirements will not be permitted to take part in
Commencement.
WHAT GRADUATES SHOULD WEAR
The Class of 2015 has elected to wear red and white academic gowns and mortarboards. The traditional gown is worn
over regular dress clothing. All seniors must order a gown this year because the texture is different from that used
previously.
Anyone who still needs a cap and gown may pick up a form in the main office or go to www.Balfour.com. Cap and
Gowns are now $45.00. The cost after May 1st is $60.00. Cash or checks made out to Balfour.
MEN:
Dark dress type trousers (NO JEANS OR SHORTS), dress shirts with necktie, and dress type shoes (NO
SNEAKERS OR SANDALS).
WOMEN:
Comfortable, plain dress, low heel shoes to compliment. Bold patterned dresses will show through
the academic gown. PLEASE DO NOT BRING A PURSE TO THE CEREMONY AS THERE IS NO PROVISION
FOR SECURING THEM.
Seniors may carry the gown and mortarboard to the assembly area. Staff members will be available to assist with the
gowning at the assembly area.
In keeping with the Commencement tradition, the administrative staff and platform guests will wear academic regalia.
PARENT NOTIFICATION
To avoid disappointment to seniors and parents the school staff has, since the end of the first
semester, reviewed report cards and transcripts and counseled with seniors at risk of not meeting all
diploma requirements. In those instances where a senior’s academic performance is uncertain until
the last exams, the staff will notify those seniors and parents as quickly as possible when the final
grades are known.
Parents are urged to monitor report cards and request a conference if you have questions about your son or daughter’s
academic standing as a senior. Conferences can be arranged by calling the Guidance Department, 410-761-8950 ext.
219, between 7:30 AM and 2:30 PM on school days.
OBLIGATIONS
Seniors must arrange to clear all obligations with the school before May 28 th.
Textbooks and school materials which have been loaned are to be returned. Seniors must return all books and
magazines to the Media Center by May 22nd, 2015. Media materials needed for school assignments may circulate on an
overnight basis. Other obligations to the class, clubs, and teams must also be satisfied by May 22nd.
SENIORS WITH OUTSTANDING OBLIGATIONS MAY NOT RECEIVE GRADUATION TICKETS OR A DIPLOMA.
TRANSCRIPTS WILL NOT BE SENT UNTIL ALL OBLIGATIONS ARE CLEARED.
TO AVOID DELAY AND INCONVENIENCE SENIORS ARE EXPECTED
COMMENCEMENT REHEARSAL
Commencement rehearsal has been scheduled for Friday, May 29 th, 2015, at 7:30 AM in the auditorium. Participation at
rehearsal is a requirement for participation in Commencement.
GUEST TICKETS
Attendance at Commencement is by invitation ticket. Each senior will receive eight tickets at rehearsal. Your graduating
senior will be able to tell you on which side of the Show Place Arena they will be seated so that you might choose seating to
offer the best view.
GRADUATION VIDEOS
Professional DVDs of graduation will be available for purchase at graduation. Adek Productions will have a booth in the foyer where
DVD packages may be purchased. You will receive your order in 4 to 6 weeks. Videos may also be purchased online at
www.Celebrate graduation.com or you may contact Adek Productions at 1-800-773-8849.
AUDIENCE DECORUM
Commencement is a joyous occasion for graduates, parents, and guests. In order to recognize the accomplishments of our
seniors the dignity of the ceremony must be preserved. Seniors will be reminded of the standards of behavior expected of
them as participants during the rehearsals. Any conduct which detracts from the ceremony cannot be allowed. The Show
Place Arena has specified NO glass containers, NO balloons, and NO air horns.
As part of the audience, parents and guests also have a responsibility to abide by the rules of common courtesy and decorum.
PLEASE REFRAIN FROM COMING ONTO THE MAIN FLOOR TO TAKE PICTURES OR VIDEOS DURING THE CEREMONY. The
audience is requested to remain standing in place until all the graduates have left the auditorium.
It is the Commencement Committee’s intent that Commencement 2015 is a memorable event for all involved and your
cooperation to ensure this is greatly appreciated.
HANDICAP SEATING
Special seating for elderly and handicapped guests will be provided off the main concourse. Seniors may obtain information
about handicap access at rehearsal.
DIRECTIONS
I-97 South to Route 3 South (turns into Route 301 South). Continue on Route 301 South to exit at Route 4 North/West (toward
Washington). Take first exit (Upper Marlboro) to stop sign. Turn left and follow to infield at the Show Place Arena. The arena
is located off Route 4 Pennsylvania Ave., at the Prince George’s Equestrian Center.

Take 50 West towards Washington. Take the Route 301-Richmond exit. Take first exit to stop sign. Turn left and follow to
infield at the Show Place Arena.
