90 RONDA IBERIA Texto/text: Carlos Pascual z y Fotografías/photos: Gonzalo Azumendi Switzerland The Unesco Ring Eleven places in Switzerland have been classified by Unesco as cultural or natural assets. If we set out in an anticlockwise direction from the city of Zurich in the north, the tour will take us to many of these heritage sites, which at the same time symbolise some of the outstanding facets of Swiss genius. From left to right and top to bottom: the Montebello castle (Bellinzona), a tram in Berne, the city’s Markgasse Street, and Lake Lugano with part of the town of Morcote. A lthough the simile may seem facile, Switzerland could be said to bear a strong resemblance to a clock mechanism. It is a rare case of complexity, with apparently loose pieces – the cantons – that are assembled to perfection so that the whole thing works to a tee. The complex, the dual and even the antagonistic are articulated in a dialectical process that has been essayed over the centuries. Unesco has recognised this polyhedrous quality by placing equal emphasis on culture, nature, tradition and the avant-garde. According to the recently deceased Swiss historian François Bergier, this “double mentality” oscillates between isolationism and cosmopolitanism, the systole of seclusion and the diastole of openness. Zurich is a good example of this, as well as an ideal city to take as an operational base, since it has connections with the farthest limits of the planet. It has been chosen on several occasions as the city with the best quality of life in the whole world, and no-one could doubt this after a walk along the banks of the River Limmat and beside a lake with more swans on it than boats, all beneath the bluish backdrop of the Alps. El contrapunto moderno a ese núcleo vetusto (la diástole) es el vanguardista Zentrum Paul Klee, From left to right and top to bottom: the train from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch; cheese fondue; Castelgrande castle; the Clock Tower in Bern, and the Paul Klee Cultural Centre, designed by Renzo Piano. mansions, the old quarter overlaps with modern streets like Bahnhofstrasse, where not a single piece of paper or cigarette end is to be seen on the ground – the children here learn to use a bin before they can talk – and exclusive brands live comfortably alongside the ‘cathedrals’ of chocolate and the coffers of money. In case anyone is interested, a square metre in this street costs more than anywhere else on the globe. Setting out anticlockwise from Zurich, we immediately come upon the nation’s capital, Berne, whose mediaeval quarter has been declared a heritage site in its entirety. This incredibly well preserved historic centre can be viewed in one fell swoop from the hills rising opposite Nydegg, the district hemmed in by the River Aare. There it all began when a mediaeval count founded the city on the spot where he had hunted down a bear (the meaning of Bern in Old German). Since then, the animal has multiplied totemically on crests, fountains and souvenirs along the four streets (exactly) that rise from that point to the other end of the wall, passing the Gothic cathedral, the Renaissance city hall and six kilometres of arcades before reaching the city gate and the clock tower (Zytglogge). Clients at breakfast in a hotel in St. Gall. ancient centre is the avant-garde Zentrum Paul Klee, designed by Renzo Piano and camouflaged like glass hills among the higher ground that embraces the city. After skirting Lake Neuchâtel, the magic circle of heritage sites takes us to the clockmaking towns of La Chaux-de-Fonds and its neighbour Le Locle. A fire in 1794 meant that the former had to be laid out anew in rectangular blocks, the same pattern as used in Le Locle. The result, unique in the Helvetian Confederation, is known as “clockwork town planning” after the two towns’ long-standing main industry. To the south are the shores of Lake Geneva, Switzerland’s largest lake, and terraced along them are the vineyards of Lavaux, which is not a village but a rural borough in the canton of Vaud. This is the socalled Swiss Riviera. First planted by mediaeval monks, the vineyards and a handful of wine-producing villages are classed by Unesco as a cultural heritage site, though what saturates the gaze is the cheerful landscape reflected in the lake as an image of the “other” Switzerland, the one which puts wine before beer, the French language before the German, and the Catholic faith before the Protestant. The next link in our ring is the natural wonder of the Jungfrau and the Aletsch Glacier (although it is best reached from Berne, to the north). The gateway to this Alpine region is the city of P { suiza el anillo de la unesco { switzerland the unesco ring Interlaken. Interior patio of the Palazzo Civico (town hall) of Bellinzona, Ticino. Interlaken. From there, a narrow-gauge railway climbs until it connects with another that resembles a tightrope act. After the suspense of a final tunnel, the frozen peak of the Jungfrau appears like a mystic vision. Flanking it are other mountains that also rise to nearly 4,000 metres, and opposite is the Aletsch Glacier, the largest in the Alps. Continuing our tour to the south of these giants, we reach the region of Ticino, where the lights and colours of Southern Europe return. The capital of the canton, Bellinzona, has always been a gateway between the Alpine world of the north and Mediterranean Italy. Three castles and a tangle of walls were therefore built there as a military headquarters in times of war and a tollgate during truces. The castles of Castelgrande (the largest, as its name indicates), Montebello and Sasso Corbaro, together with the stretches of wall linking them (La Murata), were singled out by Unesco for their excellent state of preservation, reinforced in all three cases by bold modern interventions to provide them with museums, restaurants and leisure areas. Also in Ticino is Mount San Giorgio, which enters Italy. It may not seem very high, but its peak was in fact a sea bed 200 million years ago. Insects and reptiles of the Triassic era were petrified inside its belly, and some of them are on display at the Museum of Fossils in Meride, at the foot of the mountain. Aletsch glacier as seen from the Jungfraujoch ski station. Bordering on Ticino is Grisons, the easternmost and most “remote” of the cantons, and also the largest. Here are two more cultural heritage sites. One is the stretch of railway line between the Albula and Bernina rivers, which traverses viaducts sometimes bordering on the impossible in the midst of superb scenery. The other is the Benedictine monastery of St. Johann in Müstair, very close to Italy, which is a rare example of Carolingian architecture dating from around 800. Continuing northwards, we come to another famous monastery that is older still, St. Gall. Gall, an Irish monk, was one of those who went furthest in the evangelising diaspora undertaken in about the year 600 by a handful of Irish missionaries in barbarian and pagan Europe. The superb monastery we see today, however, is a later Baroque creation, as is the delightful quarter that has grown up around it, and above all its spectacular library, one of the most luxuriant and palatial in the continent. The abbot’s cell, or Appen-zell, grew into the neighbouring village of that name, famous for its cheese, its cowbells and its troupes of cows climbing up each year to the summer pastures and down again. There still remain another couple of sites under Unesco patronage in the centre of the country, but Zurich is now just a step away, inviting us to bring our magical tour to a close. { guía z guide z Suiza Switzerland Clima y situación.
