It gives me great pleasure to welcome players, officials, sponsors and
business partners, spectators, journalists and broadcasters to the
splendid setting of Finca Cortesín for the 47th Volvo World Match
Play Championship and what, I am certain, will be four days of exciting
world class, match play golf.
This event is a firm favourite on The European Tour and provides
Volvo Group with a prestigious platform on which to showcase not
only everything we do, but also, crucially, the way we do it. It is a unique
opportunity to highlight our products, our brands and our values and to
engage with key customers and clients.
This championship has had an innovative evolution over almost halfa-century – moving with the times whilst at the same time celebrating

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you on behalf of the Volvo Car
Corporation to the 2012 Volvo World Match Play Championship here
at Finca Cortesín in Spain.
The Championship is the 47th staging of this event. Volvo took over
as sponsors and organisers in 2009 and moved it to the spectacular
five-star resort of Finca Cortesín – regarded as one of the most
wonderful golf courses in the world, set in the rolling hills of southern
Spain between Marbella and Sotogrande
The 2012 Championship once again attracts the best golf players
in the world. Thousands of visitors are expected during the tournament
together with some 300 VIP guests – a perfect way for the Volvo
Car Corporation to strengthen our relationship with our customers,
to welcome new customers and to make the Volvo brand even more
visible.
At the Geneva Motor Show in March, we launched our latest model
– the all-new Volvo V40. It is a car with an outstandingly beautiful
design and it is a class leader when it comes to driving dynamics,
fuel-efficiency and safety technology. It will be presented as this year’s
Championship hole-in-one prize.
We will also display our successful 60-models; the Volvo S60, the
Volvo V60 and the Volvo XC60 on the golf course and in the public
village. Visitors will have the opportunity to test drive our Pedestrian
Detection system. This unique Volvo technology can detect a
pedestrian who walks out in front of the car. It warns the driver and
brakes the car automatically if the driver doesn’t react.
I look forward to yet another exciting world-class tournament
with 24 of the best golfers in the world competing for the title.

This is Volvo’s 127th professional golf tournament, a world record.
Many of our customers are genuinely passionate about golf, so this is a

Tengo el gran placer de darles la bienvenida a la edición 47 del Volvo Mundial Match Play.
Este es el tercer año de patrocinio de Volvo al Mundial Match Play. Su historial como
patrocinador de golf a nivel mundial, hace de esta compañía el socio perfecto para este
histórico evento creado por el fundador de IMG, Mark McCormack, cuya primera edición
ganó Arnold Palmer en 1964.
Trabajando en equipo con Volvo y con el Circuito Europeo a lo largo de los años,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 47th edition of the
Volvo World Match Play Championship.
This is the third year of Volvo’s sponsorship of the World Match Play
Championship and, as ever, their heritage in golf sponsorship around
the world makes them the perfect partner for this historic event, started
by IMG’s founder, Mark McCormack, in 1964 with the first edition won
by the great Arnold Palmer.
Working with Volvo and The European Tour over the years, we have
continued to improve and refresh this unique tournament. With its rich
tradition and match play format, it is one of the most eagerly anticipated
weeks on the schedule.
The ‘Champions League’ style group format and the recent increase
in field size to 24 players has been well received by players and fans
alike and this year we will see a repeat of the ‘round robin’ format over
Thursday and Friday.
We are very happy to be back for a third Championship at the
spectacular Finca Cortesín which provides a fantastic setting for an

intriguing four days of match play golf. Moving the Championship to
Spain, in conjunction with this earlier May date, allows the players and
the course to be shown off at their glorious best, bathed in Spanish
sunshine. All 24 stars gathered here this week, competing for the
€700,000 first prize, offer compelling reasons as to why they should
claim this coveted title, and we know the spectators will be treated to
many tantalising match-ups. With the 2012 Ryder Cup fast approaching,
all the players will be looking to show off their match play prowess with
some notable scalps in the homeland of their captain.
We would like to thank Volvo, Finca Cortesín, The European Tour and
the Championship sponsors and partners for their support, as well as
the many volunteers whose enthusiastic commitment makes it possible
to stage an event of this magnitude.

Our Volvo events can be traced back to 1987 and the Belgian
Open, and we hope the shared philosophies and visions that united us
25 years ago can continue to evolve long into the future.
Over the years our relationship with Volvo has been driven by
passion and vision – those same qualities that laid the foundations for
the first World Match Play Championship back in 1964.

Mark H. McCormack – founder of this week’s tournament promoter
IMG – and his idea to bring the best players in the world together for
a match play head to head battle was indeed visionary, with the great
Arnold Palmer the first man to put his name on the trophy.
Since Palmer created history there have been 17 Major Champions
in the World Match Play’s winners’ enclosure, and we are sure that
there are more to come given The European Tour Membership’s recent
dominance of the Official World Golf Ranking.

de plata, porque con el Volvo Mundial Match
Play de 2012 serán ya 127 los eventos de golf

ruedo) la relación más duradera del golf mundial

l jueves 27 de mayo de 1988 en el club de Wentworth,
cerca de Londres, se jugó el Volvo PGA inaugural.
Ese evento marcó la llegada de un patrocinador a
quien casi todos atribuyen el cambio de cara, y de fortuna,
del golf europeo.
Este cambio no se debió solo a una deslumbrante
selección de nuevos torneos como el Volvo Masters, que
fue durante 21 años el evento de cierre de temporada del
Circuito Europeo y el precursor del Campeonato del Mundo
de Dubai, sino también a la creación del Orden de Mérito
Volvo, recientemente heredado por la Carrera a Dubai.

T first began 25 years ago. The date
was Thursday, 27th May, 1988; the
venue was the Wentworth Club,
Surrey, near London; the occasion, the
inaugural Volvo PGA Championship. It
was Volvo’s debut as a sponsor and it
effectively changed the face – and the
fortunes – of European golf.
The tournament heralded the
introduction of a glittering array of new
golf championships, which included
the prestigious Volvo Masters. For 21
years the Volvo Masters served as the
end-of-season Tour Championship,
the forerunner to the present DP
World Tour Championship Dubai. The
long established season-long Volvo
Order of Merit has since become
today’s Race to Dubai.
Gratitude
Volvo were also responsible for
creating vastly increased prize money
and introducing new and innovative
player services such as courtesy cars,
world-class practice facilities and
players’ lounges. These improvements
may be taken very much for granted
today but they were a welcome part of
Volvo’s huge contribution to golf.
Back then, a seven-month season,
almost exclusively in Europe, offered
prize money of under €10million. This
year, it’s a 50-week, 52-event season
spanning the globe with prize money
of almost €150million.
The man whose name was
inexorably linked with Volvo’s awardwinning golf sponsorship, Colin
Montgomerie, OBE, the 2010 Ryder
Cup-winning Captain says: “We, the
players, and The European Tour owe
Volvo a huge debt of gratitude for their
contribution to golf.
“Volvo gave The European Tour
stability and credibility through their
many events such as the Volvo PGA
Championship and together with their
backing of the Volvo Order of Merit
they also attracted many other bluechip brands into our sport,” adds the
winner of eight Volvo Order of Merit
titles between 1993 and 2005.
By the mid-1990s, with Volvo’s
European Tour engine running
smoothly, Volvo had the foresight to
head east, to Asia in general and China
in particular. Volvo quickly became the
first western brand to engage with golf
in the Middle Kingdom, rolling-out a
pan-Asian programme to mirror its
European initiative.
This year’s Volvo Golf Champions in
South Africa took the total number of
professional golf events under Volvo’s
sponsorship to 125. April’s Volvo China
Open became No.126 and the iconic
Volvo World Match Play Championship
at here Finca Cortesín is No.127, and
Volvo’s third event of the 2012 season.
“Volvo is proud to be the only
ever-present title sponsor on The
European Tour,” says Per Ericsson,
President, Volvo Event Management.

on investment and it is clear that golf
continues, after 25 highly-successful
years, to deliver the results we require.”
Yet there is even more to Volvo’s
involvement in golf. For 25 years it has
organised a worldwide golf series for
customers and prospective clients –
formerly the Volvo Masters Amateur,
now the Volvo World Golf Challenge –
with almost a million club golfers from
30 different nations having taken part.
Unique
“Our golf programme for our
customers is truly unique,” says Per
Ericsson. “Volvo is the only big brand
that ties its amateur and professional
events together. In South Africa our
world finalists in the Volvo World Golf
Challenge played with the professionals
at the Volvo Golf Champions on The
European Tour, live on worldwide TV,
having played their own World Final on
The Links at Fancourt’s sister course,
the demanding Montagu Course.”
With golf an Olympic sport from Rio
de Janeiro in 2016 and beyond, Per
Ericsson sees significant opportunities,
saying: “Golf is growing in China,
where Volvo is already the leading
golf sponsor, and in places such as
India, Russia and Brazil. At Volvo, we
can make business through people’s
passion for golf – a sport played by
a great many of our customers and

AN Poulter demostró una vez más su calidad como uno
de los mejores jugadores de match de su generación,
con su victoria por 2 y 1 sobre Luke Donald en la final
del Volvo Mundial Match Play del año pasado aquí, en
Finca Cortesín.
“Llegué con mucha ilusión de ganar este prestigioso
evento, sobre todo en mi primer año”, dijo Poulter al recibir
su 11º título del Circuito Europeo y el primero desde
noviembre de 2010. “Por fin me empezaron a entrar los
pats. Llevaba varios meses pateando mal, y está claro que
para ganar hay que meter pats.”

week last year and anticipates a tough defence of his crown at Finca Cortesín

AN Poulter showed once again
that he has developed into one
of the finest match play golfers of
his generation with his 2&1 victory
over Luke Donald in the final of
last year’s Volvo World Match Play
Championship here at Finca Cortesín.
“I thought it would be pretty
special to win this prestigious event,
particularly on my debut,” said Poulter,
who collected his 11th European Tour
title and his first since November 2010.
“I finally started holing some putts.
I’ve been frustrated for a few months
and you have to hole putts to win.
It’s a nice boost and it answers the
questions that have been asked of
me over the last five months,” said
Poulter, who has been one of Europe’s
star performers at each of the last two
Ryder Cups.
Memories
The Englishman, equally renowned
as a golfing talent and a fashion icon,
displayed great tenacity throughout
the knockout stages of the 2011
to despatch the then World No.1 Lee
Westwood (1up), Francesco Molinari
(2up) and Nicolas Colsaerts (on the
19th hole) to set up a mouthwatering
all-England Final clash – the first since
the event began at Wentworth in 1964.
“The Volvo World Match Play
Championship is one of golf’s greatest
events,” says Poulter. “I grew up
watching the Match Play on TV and
at Wentworth and have some great
memories of Seve and Ernie Els, who
dominated the Championship.
“Winning last year here at Finca
Cortesín was fun because I had to beat
so many great players at the top of their
game, particularly Lee (Westwood) and
then Luke (Donald) in the final. It’s so
satisfying to beat the world’s best.”
The final was a match up that truly
captured the golf world’s imagination.

‘Machine’
Donald had thrashed Martin Kaymer,
who he had defeated in the final of
the 2011 WGC-Accenture Match
Play Championship, 5&3 in his semifinal match, which led the Majorwinning German to liken his Ryder Cup
colleague, Donald, to ‘a machine’.
Prior to beating Kaymer, Donald,
who finished joint top scorer with
Poulter at the 2010 Ryder Cup at
Celtic Manor, had edged to victory on

the 19th hole against Johan Edfors
and defeated 2011 Masters Champion
Charl Schwartzel 2up in his knockout
matches. The early stages of the 2011
saw a series of ‘Champions League’
style round robin group matches, with
the top two players in each group of
three progressing to the knockout
stages.
Poulter just squeezed through with
two halves from his matches against
Francesco Molinari and Paul Lawrie,
after the Italian had defeated the Scot
3&2 in their match. Donald’s path to
the last 16 was much smoother. He
beat American Ryan Moore 4&3 before
knocking out 2009 Volvo World Match
Play Champion Ross Fisher 3&1.
As predicted, the 18-hole final was

Como era de esperar, la final a 18 hoyos estuvo muy
reñida. Al principio el liderato fue pasando de uno a otro,
hasta que Poulter, que iba 1 abajo en el 12, metió un birdie
desde 12 metros para ponerse empatado.
Dos hoyos después tomó la iniciativa con otro birdie, pero
esta vez desde menos de un metro. Luego dio el golpe de
gracia en el 16, y cuando Donald falló el birdie en el siguiente,
el partido estaba sentenciado. Era el regalo de cumpleaños
que Poulter había prometido a su hijo, también llamado Luke,
que cumplía 7 años ese día. “Felicidades, Luke”, dijo su padre
con sonrisa de oreja a oreja. Como anécdota, Poulter había
perdido su marcador de la suerte en el 8, cuando se cayó al
dar un golpe en un talud.
Tras su victoria, Poulter rindió un emocionado tributo
a Severiano Ballesteros, que ganó cinco veces el Mundial
Match Play, y cuyo juego valiente y creativo le inspiró
dedicarse al golf, como a muchos otros jugadores de su
generación. “Significa muchísimo para mí ganar este trofeo
que lleva cinco veces el nombre de Seve”, dijo. “Es muy
bonito poner mi nombre en un torneo que ganó Seve”.
Después de ganar en España, Poulter solo volvió a terminar
una vez entre los diez primeros en el Circuito Europeo, pero
a fin de año se adjudicó el JBWere Masters en Australia.
Este año ha empezado jugando sólidamente y dos top tens
recientes, en el Arnold Palmer Invitational y en el Masters de
Augusta han supuesto una inyección de confianza de cara a
su defensa del título aquí esta semana.
“Estoy deseando defender mi título del Volvo Mundial
Match Play en Finca Cortesin,” afirma. “Me gusta el toma y
daca del match y creo que nos viene bien cambiar un poco
de tanto medal como jugamos semana tras semana.”

“También me encanta volver al magnífico hotel Finca
Cortesín, con sus excelentes servicios y su amable
hospitalidad. Es uno de los hoteles más agradables que he
conocido.”
“En este año de Copa Ryder, creo que el Volvo Mundial
Match Play va a ser aún más emocionante y significativo
por ser el último evento match play que jugamos antes
de Medinah y, por lo tanto, la última oportunidad de los
aspirantes al equipo de mostrar al capitán José María
Olazábal su calidad en este formato.”
Cuando se le pregunta qué es lo que le hace ser un
jugador de match tan temible, el único que tiene en su haber
tanto el Volvo Mundial Match Play como el WGC-Accenture
Match Play, Poulter contesta: “Creo que es muy sencillo: odio

the early stages. But Poulter, who had
gone down to the last hole in every
match except the final, took control
when he levelled with a mammoth
40-foot putt for birdie at the par-3
12th before moving into the lead two
holes later after pitching his approach
to within three feet to set up another
birdie.
Poulter then struck the decisive
blow on the 16th to give his son (also
called Luke), the perfect seventh
birthday present when Donald failed
to make birdie at the next hole.
“Happy birthday Luke,” smiled
Poulter, who lost his lucky ball marker
when he fell down an embankment
while taking a shot on the eighth.
With Poulter’s victory came a
poignant tribute to Seve Ballesteros,
who won the World Match Play
Championship five times and whose
courageous, creative play inspired
the Englishman and most of his
generation to take up the game of
golf.
“It means a lot for me to win this
trophy, which Seve’s name has been
on five times,” said Poulter. “It’s just
lovely to put my name in amongst
tournaments that Seve has won.”
Poulter went on to end the season
with just one additional top-ten finish
on The European Tour but he did end
the year with victory at the JBWere
Masters in Australia. He has made a
steady start to his campaign this year
and recent top ten finishes at the
Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida
and at The Masters have boosted his
confidence ahead of his title defence
here this week.
‘Excited’
“I can’t wait to defend my Volvo
World Match Play Championship title
here at Finca Cortesín,” he said. “I love
the cut and thrust of match play and
find it a refreshing change from the
usual strokeplay format we play week
in and week out on The Tour.
“I am also very excited to be staying
at the luxurious Finca Cortesín Hotel
once again with all the wonderful
hospitality and services they have to
offer. It’s definitely one of the nicest
hotels I’ve ever stayed in.
“With 2012 being a Ryder Cup

formidable match play opponent – the
only man to have won both the Volvo
World Match Play Championship

Championship – Poulter says: “I think

in January, setting up the prospect
of a remarkable Volvo treble, he
showcased the enormous growing
appeal of Volvo’s three global
professional golf events.
The inaugural Volvo China Open
took place in 1995 and it has since
grown from a relatively modest start to
a truly worldwide event. Last month’s
Championship took place over the
stunning new North Dye Course
at Tianjin Binhai Lake Golf Club in
northern China, 130 kilometres southeast of the nation’s capital city, Beijing.
As the Volvo China Open continues
to flourish, it now follows the principles
adopted by many other Open
championships around the world.
One is that qualification is now
based substantially on the Official
World Golf Ranking. This, plus the
popularity of the event, creates prequalification to attain the maximum
field of 156.
Before the event, four two-day
tournaments are held around the
country – three for Chinese nationals
and the fourth for players from
overseas. Just three spaces are on
offer at each event and these attract
ever-increasing numbers.
Another feature is that the
tournament moves around the country
in order to involve as many people and
places as possible. This welcoming

relationship with the golf clubs and
golfers of the host nation was much
in evidence this year as large crowds
attended the exciting climax at Binhai
Lake.
A third feature of worldwide Open
Championships is that they are typically
held on links-style courses. There is
no doubt that the Pete Dye design at
Binhai Lake fits the bill perfectly and
the players were glowing in their praise
for the layout.
As golf itself continues to grow in
China, so, too, does everything related
to the game and a knock-on affect is
that this year’s Championship attracted
the strongest field in the history of the
event. There were 19 of the Top 100
in the Official World Golf Ranking
including Peter Hanson, Ian Poulter

Grace displayed the same cool,
calm approach when he won the
Volvo Golf Champions at The Links
at Fancourt in South Africa back
in January. Having finished on the

One in seven meals eaten in Europe reaches consumers
courtesy of trucks from the Volvo Group rolling on the roads
of the continent. Buses are the world’s most common type
of public transportation, helping many of us to reach work,
school, take vacations, or visit friends and family. If all the
Volvo buses in the world were to start at the same time,
they would transport more than 10 million people.
Just like all the participants in the European Athletics
Indoor Championship in Gothenburg, Sweden, Volvo
approaches their assignment with the utmost care and
attention to detail. With the same commitment, energy and
focus, Volvo endeavours to reach their goal in becoming the
world leader in sustainable transport solutions.
Volvo are where you are. During the European Athletics
Indoor Championship, for example, the Volvo Group’s buses
will transport participants and visitors, while goods transport
will be conducted using the Group’s trucks.
At the London Olympics this summer much of the waste
created will be handled by Volvo trucks. Companies and
industries in London generate more than 4.5 million tonnes
of refuse alone. In a recently initiated partnership Volvo
arranged the delivery and maintenance of 52 new trucks,
including the Volvo FE Refuse Collection Vehicle (RCV).
During the Olympics that figure will increase considerably.
It’s an interesting statistic that traffic speeds in London
today have remained at around 10mph for the past 100
years – the same speed as it was in the days of the horse4

From the business world to the tourism world Volvo
Construction Equipment machines are being used in the
exotic islands of Hawaii to recycle more than a million
tonnes of waste every year.
Waste that was previously destined for landfill among the
picturesque islands is now being recycled using Volvo’s CE
fleet.
In Sweden PostNord (Nordic Post), recently updated its
fleet with 175 heavy-duty Volvo trucks. PostNord is one of
the largest logistics companies in the Nordic countries and
uses Volvo as sole supplier of their trucks. All PostNord’s
Volvo trucks are fitted with I-Shift as standard which reduces
fuel consumption by as much as three per cent, saving the
company up to SEK 25 million a year. PostNord are also
looking to lease Volvo trucks’ electric-hybrid vehicles which
are aimed at cutting up to 20 per cent in fuel consumption
and carbon dioxide emissions.
Styrsobolaget Ferries transports more than three million
people to and from the islands around Gothernburg, the
majority of which are equipped with Volvo Penta engines.
Whether it’s on sea, in the air or on land Volvo engines
and Volvo vehicles play a vital role in the lives of millions of

Al año siguiente Tom Weiskopf ganó
holgadamente a Lee Trevino. Con

torneo, la dotación en premios se
incrementó hasta 30.000 libras. Fue
una edición memorable en la que
Gary Player se adjudicó su quinto y
último Mundial Match Play en una
final reñidísima con el australiano

Graham Marsh. Player volvió a llegar
a la final en 1974, pero esa vez el
Caballero Negro cayó por 3 y 1 ante
Hale Irwin, el vigente campeón del
Abierto de Estados Unidos. Irwin
consiguió defender su título en 1975
imponiéndose por 4 y 3 sobre Al
Geiberger. En 1976, David Graham
se convirtió en el primer australiano
ganador del Mundial Match Play, tras
derrotar a Irwin en el hoyo 38. Al año

THE World Match Play Championship was the brainchild of IMG founder Mark H. McCormack who

1960s:
In 1964 the first World Match Play
Championship (WMPC) held at
Wentworth caught the imagination
of spectators and TV viewers the
word over as the ‘People’s Favourite’
Arnold Palmer triumphed 2&1 over
Englishman Neil Coles.
Gary Player followed that with a
blaze of birdies to win from Peter
Thompson and he made it back-toback victories with a superb 6&4
win over Jack Nicklaus in 1966. The
following year Palmer won his second
title with a 2up victory over Australian
Thompson before Player made it a hattrick of titles with a 1up win over New
Zealand’s Bob Charles.
However, the left-handed Charles
went one better in 1969 as he
defeated American Gene Littler at the
first extra hole.
1970s:
For the first and only time, Jack
Nicklaus won the WMPC with a 2&1
win over Lee Trevino while the following
year Gary Player won for the fourth time
in eight years, cruising to a 5&4 win over

Nicklaus in what was fast becoming a
hugely popular sporting occasion.
The following year Tom Weiskopf
took the spoils from Trevino before the
prize fund rose to £30,000 for the tenth
anniversary of the event. It was to be a
memorable tournament as Gary Player
won his fifth and final WMPC with a
hard-fought victory over Australia’s
Graham Marsh.
Player was back in the final in 1974
but it wasn’t to be for the ‘Black Knight’
as reigning US Open winner Hale
Irwin defeated him 3&1. Irwin then
successfully defended his crown in
1975 with a 4&3 win over Al Geiberger.
David Graham became the first
Australian to win the WMPC in 1976
after he defeated Irwin at the 38th
hole and the following year another
Australian, Graham Marsh, entered
the winner’s circle with a 5&3 win over
Raymond Floyd. Japan’s Isao Aoki
thwarted New Zealand’s Simon Owen
with a 3&2 win in 1978 and Aoki made
it to the final the following year but was
defeated by American Bill Rogers.
1980s:
Greg Norman started a new era
for the WMPC defeating Sandy Lyle
by one hole in an epic 36-hole final.
Spaniard Seve Ballesteros became
the tournament’s youngest ever
winner with a 1up victory against Ben
Crenshaw in 1981 before he defeated
Sandy Lyle the following year to clinch
his second WMPC title.
Greg Norman added a second
WMPC to his résumé with victory
over Nick Faldo in 1983 before Seve
won back-to-back titles in 1984 and
1985, defeating Bernhard Langer
in the final both times. Norman won
his third WMPC in 1986, defeating
Scotsman Sandy Lyle and Lyle was
runner-up again in 1987, this time to
Ian Woosnam, before he was finally
victorious in 1988 against Nick Faldo,
who bounced back to close out the
1980s with a win over the Welshman.
1990s:
Woosnam started the new decade
on the front foot with a 4&2 victory
over Mark McNulty and Seve was back
hoisting the trophy after he saw off
Nick Price in 1991 before Faldo won
the last of his WMPC titles in 1992.
American Ryder Cup stalwart Corey
Pavin won his first and only WMPC,
beating defending champion Faldo
by one hole in 1993 before Ernie
Els exerted his dominance over the
championship.
Els saw off Colin Montgomerie 4&2
(1994), Steve Elkington 3&1 (1995)
and Vijay Singh 3&2 (1996) to enter
the history books as the first man to
win three in a row at the WMPC.
The following year Els was stopped
in his tracks when Vijay Singh got his
revenge on the South African, winning
by one hole. Tiger Woods made his
WMPC debut in 1998 but it proved to
be an unhappy one as his friend and
compatriot Mark O’Meara took him
down with a 1-hole victory in the final.
In 1999 Colin Montgomerie etched
his name on the trophy by beating
defending champion O’Meara to
complete his second win over the
Wentworth West Course that year
– he had earlier won the Volvo PGA
Championship.
2000s:
England’s Lee Westwood defeated
Colin Montgomerie on the second
extra hole of a dramatic final day to win
his first WMPC while the following year
Ian Woosnam won his third WMPC
title with a 2&1 win over Padraig
Harrington.

best, beating Sergio García 2&1
(2002), Thomas Björn 4&3 (2003)
and Westwood 2&1 (2004) to make
it a second run of three successive
victories before Michael Campbell
signed off on a hugely memorable year
in 2005 by defeating Paul McGinley
2&1 in the final.
Paul Casey became only the third
Englishman to win the WMPC with
a record-breaking 10&8 win over
American Shaun Micheel in 2006
before Els won the final WMPC held
at Wentworth, in 2007 with a 6&4 win

sponsorship in professional golf, the
took place outside the UK for the
first time in its long and distinguished
history, in 2009. One of the best fields
ever assembled in the history of the
World Match Play Championship
graced the magnificent Finca Cortesín
Golf Resort in Southern Spain and in
an ironic twist, it was the Wentworthbased Ross Fisher who won the title,
defeating American Ryder Cup star
Anthony Kim in a thrilling 36-hole final.
In 2010 the Volvo World Match Play
Championship didn’t feature on The
European Tour International Schedule
but last year it returned in a new primetime slot in the spring and Ian Poulter
lifted the trophy after a gutsy win over
compatriot Luke Donald. n

Back in the sixties when the World
Match Play Championship was in its
infancy, golf wear and fashion, the
fairway and the catwalk, were total
strangers to each other.
Now, almost 50-years-later, the
game has embraced modern trends,
largely thanks to those Kings of Swing,
Ian Poulter and Matteo Manassero,
and several stylish Scandinavian
brands including J. Lindeberg, Peak
Performance and Oscar Jacobson.
Oscar Jacobson threw down the
gauntlet to the chasing pack via the
European launch of its Summer 2012
range, which took place at the 2011
as part of a strategic alliance with
Volvo in Golf.
Oscar Jacobson was founded in
1903 with its roots firmly planted in the
historic Southern Swedish textile town
of Borås, the gentlemen’s outfitter
moved into golf a generation ago.
It has been the official apparel
licensee to The Ryder Cup as well
as being the official outfitter of The
European Tour.
“When the opportunity came along
to work with another iconic global
brand based in Sweden, Volvo, we
saw many synergies of positioning
because both are premium brands
with a reputation for cutting-edge
Scandinavian design,” explains Gunnar
Hedendahl, OJ’s Sales Manager, Golf.
It was something of a coup for
last year’s Volvo World Match Play
Championship to enjoy a sneak
preview of OJ’s 2012 range, “hot off
the press,” as Hedendahl explains,
an indication of how Volvo’s awardwinning golf portfolio is tailor-made
for the Stockholm-based brand’s
development plans.
“Like Volvo, we prefer to do a few
things but do them exceptionally
well,” continues the Swede, who was
headhunted from OJ’s arch-rival J.
Lindeberg, adding, “Similarly, both
brands have a reputation for quality

and integrity so we work in the most
thorough of ways, providing tailormade clothing across the range of
Volvo events, from staff and officials
to volunteers, VIPs and Pro-am
players and now, even specially tailor
a bespoke range for ladies.”
In addition to quality, Volvo’s
other two core values are Safety

Jacobson’s new performance wear
ticks both boxes: its ‘spin-yarn dye’
range treated with UV-filtering finish to
help block out the sun’s harmful rays,
and an industry-leading production
process, which uses 60% less water,
reducing pollution while cutting costs.
“We retain our classic cut, the clean
and characteristic Oscar Jacobson
look,” explains technical designer
Thomas Håkansson. “Our 2012
range uses subtle, understated colour
tones, combinations of greys, reds and
blacks, beige, yellows and greens and
the classic red, white and navy, all very
contemporary, whilst also reflecting
the rich history and heritage of the
quintessential OJ look,” he adds.
Commenting on the collaboration
between Volvo and Oscar Jacobson,
Per Ericsson, President, Volvo

uando Volvo asumió el patrocinio y la
copromoción del Volvo Mundial Match Play,
empezó la búsqueda de un nuevo trofeo icónico
para uno de los eventos de referencia del golf mundial.
Volvo se dirigió a otra marca sueca de categoría
mundial, Orrefors, y encargó a la galardonada artista del
cristal Ingegerd Råman la pieza que levantó con orgullo el
inglés Ross Fisher en 2009.
“Cuando Volvo se dirigió a Orrefors y me encargaron a
mí el diseño del trofeo, fue a la vez un gran honor y un
gran reto”, comenta Råman. “Recibí instrucciones de crear
algo fuerte, poderoso, icónico y que reflejara además la
influencia escandinava contemporánea. Aparte de eso,
se me dejó el nivel de libertad artística necesario para
producir algo verdaderamente emblemático que hiciera
justicia al título.”
Después de documentarse en la cartera de golf de Volvo,
Råman empezó a esbozar la pieza con el asesoramiento
de sus más destacados colegas de Orrefors.
“Decidimos trabajar en color, algo realmente único para
mí como diseñadora, pues sólo había trabajado antes
en cristal claro y en negro”, nos explica Råman que ha
diseñado piezas exclusivas para la Familia Real Sueca.
“A partir de ahí se produjo una verdadera fusión
de talentos, en la que participaron el maestro
soplador Stefan Johansson, los fabricantes de
moldes Anders Karlsson y Jon Bayer, el tallador
Gert Johnasson y el grabador Krister Eriksson.”
Una vez terminados el diseño inicial y el molde, se procedió
a soplar el cristal en el kiln del horno de crisoles de la
histórica fábrica de Orrefors en Kalmar, al este de Suecia,
una temperatura de 1.140ºC.
Utilizando procedimientos libres de plomo sin peligro
para el entorno, y después de superar las complejidades
del color, el azul característico de Volvo, el tallador y el
grabador empezaron a tejer su magia bajo la atenta mirada
de Råman.
El resultado fue una pieza cilíndrica de 480 mm de
altura, 200 mm de diámetro y unos 10 kg de peso, que
refleja el distintivo automotriz de Volvo. A diferencia de la
mayoría de los trofeos deportivos, carece de base.
“Eso yo lo tenía clarísimo”, asegura Råman, “Es una
pieza muy potente, con mucha presencia, y por eso tiene
que estar sola. Es sencilla y contemporánea, libre de
ornamentos tradicionales como asas o bolas de golf. Este
trofeo será parte esencial del evento, una extensión del
campeón, algo que ganará y conservará con orgullo.”
El primero que obtuvo este magnífico trofeo fue Ross
Fisher en 2009, después de superar por 4 y 3 a Anthony
Kim en la final. Estas fueron sus palabras al recibirlo: “Es un
gran honor ganar un trofeo tan prestigioso como el Volvo
Mundial Match Play inaugural en Finca Cortesin.”
El año pasado Ian Poulter, después de derrotar por 2 y
1 a Luke Donald en una final de emociones fuertes, dijo al
levantar con orgullo el trofeo: “Mi hijo Luke me pidió como
regalo de cumpleaños que ganara el trofeo para él…
y al ver la lista de antiguos ganadores, pensé que sería
fantástico poner ahí mi nombre el día del cumpleaños de
Luke.”
Dentro del marco de colaboración permanente entre
Volvo y Orrefors Kosta Boda, los cristaleros suecos
también fabrican los trofeos y recuerdos del Pro-am del
Volvo Mundial Match Play, así como los trofeos del Volvo

HEN Volvo became the
new title sponsor and copromoter of the Volvo World
Match Play Championship, the search
was on for a new and iconic trophy for
one of the landmark events in world
golf.
Volvo ‘homed in’ on another worldclass Swedish brand, Orrefors, and the
award-winning glass artist Ingegerd
Råman to create the piece, which was
first proudly held aloft by England’s
Ross Fisher in 2009.
“When Orrefors was approached by
Volvo to collaborate on this piece and
they commissioned me to design the
trophy, it was both a great honour and a
big challenge,” explains Råman, adding,
“the brief was to produce something
strong, powerful, iconic and to bring in a
contemporary Scandinavian influence.
“Other than that, I was left with the
levels of artistic freedom I need to
produce something truly distinctive that
would do justice to the occasion.”
Having researched Volvo’s golf
portfolio Råman started sketching the
piece, consulting with key Orrefors
colleagues, a process that brought
about a significant development. “We
agreed to do something truly unique for
me as a designer and to work in colour,
as I had only previously worked in clear
glass and black,” explained Råman, who
has also produced bespoke pieces for
the Swedish Royal Family.
“It was a fusion of talents, including
Stefan Johansson, the Master Blower,
Mouldmakers Anders Karlsson and
Jon Bayer, Cutter Gert Johnasson and
Krister Eriksson, the Engraver.”
Once the initial design and mould
was complete, it was time to blow the
hot glass in the pot furnace kiln at the
historic Orrefors works in Kalmar in
eastern Sweden, in the searing heat of
1140ºC.
Using an environmentally-friendly,
lead-free process, and having overcome
the complexities involved in introducing
colour – blue in keeping with Volvo’s
image – the cutter and engraver began
to weave their magic under the watchful
eye of Ingegerd Råman.
The result was a cylindrical piece
reflecting Volvo’s automotive hallmark,
480mm high, 200mm in diameter and
weighing some 10kg; unusually for a
sporting trophy, it does not have a base.
“I was passionate about that,”
she insists, “The result is a powerful
piece making a strong statement and
therefore has to be freestanding.
“It’s simple and contemporary,
uncluttered by traditional accoutrements
like handles or golf balls, something
that will form a vital part of the event,
an extension of the champion golfer,
something he will be proud to win and
to keep.”
When Ross Fisher became the
first man to be presented with the
magnificent trophy in 2009, after
beating Anthony Kim 4&3 in the
final, he said “This is a great honour

to win such a prestigious trophy for
the inaugural Volvo World Match Play
Championship at Finca Cortesín.”
Last year Ian Poulter, who defeated
Luke Donald 2&1 in a close,
emotionally-charged final, revealed as
he proudly held the iconic blue trophy
aloft, “Prior to the final, my son Luke
asked dad to win the trophy for him as
a special birthday present and when I
looked at the names of the previous
winners on the first tee, and on Luke’s
birthday, I thought it would be special to
put my name on it as well.”
As part of an ongoing collaboration
between Volvo and Orrefors Kosta
Boda, the Swedish glass specialists
also produce the trophies and
mementoes for the Volvo World Match
Play Championship Pro-am as well as
the trophies for the Volvo China Open,
the Volvo Golf Champions and the Volvo
World Golf Challenge.
With 24 of the world’s best players
competing for the honour of proudly
posing for photographers with one
of the most elegant of awards, it will
be a sunny Sunday evening before it
becomes crystal clear who the next
recipient will be. n

El Match Play es el formato original, y según algunos, el más puro
del golf, que se remonta a sus orígenes en el siglo XV. Aunque
en los últimos tiempos el medal play puede haber eclipsado
al clásico formato mano a mano, el match play sigue estando
en primer plano en algunos eventos muy especiales como la
Copa Ryder y el Volvo World Match Play Championship, tan
apreciados tanto por los jugadores como por el público.
Principios básicos del match play
n En Match Play los jugadores compiten entre sí mano a
mano, mientras que en medal play juegan contra el campo
y la tarjeta.
n Cada hoyo es un mini campeonato cerrado. Según el
número de golpes que cada jugador dé en ese hoyo, puede
ganarlo, perderlo o empatarlo con su contrario.
n A diferencia del medal play donde todas las vueltas
duran 18 hoyos, en Match Play la vuelta se termina cuando
es matemáticamente imposible que el jugador gane los
suficientes hoyos para seguir en el partido. Por ejemplo, si
un jugador va 3 abajo a falta de 2 hoyos, ya no puede ganar
ni empatar el partido.
n En Match Play, cuando los dos jugadores han ganado el
mismo número de hoyos después de haber jugado la vuelta
estipulada, pasan a un desempate a muerte súbita donde el
primero que gane un hoyo se proclama vencedor.
n Puede ocurrir perfectamente que un jugador dé menos
golpes en una vuelta que su contrario y sin embargo pierda
el partido si éste le gana más hoyos.
n Como consecuencia de todo ello, el Match Play tiende
a ser mucho más emocionante. Los factores estratégicos
y psicológicos juegan un papel crucial, y se generan
situaciones de alta tensión en las que los jugadores pueden
optar por atacar o defenderse según las circunstancias del
partido.
n “Empate”: Es cuando en cualquier momento del partido
ambos jugadores han perdido o ganado el mismo número
de hoyos.
n “Dar o conceder”: Se da o concede un hoyo o un partido
cuando la parte perdedora ya no tiene ninguna posibilidad de
ganar o empatar el hoyo o el partido.
n “Dormie”: Se refiere a la situación en la que uno de los
jugadores ha ganado el suficiente número de hoyos como
para asegurarse no perder el partido. Por ejemplo, si va dos
arriba y dos a jugar, no puede perder.
n “Pat dado”: Es el pat que un jugador concede a su contrario
porque se considera demasiado fácil para fallarlo.
n “Hoyo empatado”: Se produce cuando ambos jugadores
hacen el mismo resultado en un hoyo.
n “Desempate”: Es la forma de resolver un partido cuando
los jugadores terminan la vuelta estipulada con el mismo
número de hoyos perdidos o ganados.
El idioma del Match Play
n “Muerte súbita”: Es el formato normal de desempate en
Match Play. El primer jugador que gana un hoyo se proclama
ganador.
Hay algunos términos que se aplican exclusivamente al
“Match Play” y recogen la rica tradición de este formato
original del golf. Los términos golfísticos habituales como
“birdie”, “bogey”, “eagle”, etc. son secundarios en “Match
Play”, donde lo único que cuenta es el resultado de un
jugador contra el de su oponente, no contra la tarjeta.
n “Arriba” o “abajo”: Se refiere a la situación del partido en
cualquier momento del mismo. El jugador que va ganando
va “arriba” y el que va perdiendo, “abajo”. Suele ir precedido
del número de hoyos de ventaja o desventaja que lleva el
jugador. Por ejemplo: “2 arriba” o “1 abajo”.

Match Play golf dates back as far as the game itself, the original and some might say the ‘purest’ form of the Royal and
Ancient game with its origins in the 15th Century. Although stroke play may have eclipsed the classic head-to-head format
over recent years, the dramatic format of Match Play remains at the forefront of the game, with truly special events such as
The Ryder Cup and the Volvo World Match Play Championship celebrated by the players and the crowds.
Match Play Made Simple
n The term ‘Match Play’ is when golfers
play against each other, head-to-head,
whereas ‘Stroke Play’ is when they play
against the course and its scorecard.
n Each hole is a ‘mini-competition’ in
its own right. Depending on the number
of shots each golfer takes on any one
hole, he/she may ‘win,’ ‘lose,’ or ‘halve’
the hole with their opponent.
n Unlike ‘Stroke Play’ where every
round of golf lasts 18 holes, in ‘Match
Play,’ the game is over when it is
mathematically impossible for a player
to win enough of the remaining holes
to stay in the match. For example, if a
player is three-down with two-to-play
he can’t win the match.
n In ‘Match Play,’ if two players have
won the same number of holes after
18 holes, they move on to a suddendeath play-off with the first golfer to
win a hole outright declared the winner.
n It is perfectly possible for a player to
have the lower number of strokes, but
still lose the match if his opponent wins
more holes.
n As a result, ‘Match Play’ golf tends to
be much more exciting, with different
tactics, psychology and high-octane
drama throughout, as players choose
to attack or defend, depending on the
state-of-play.
well-known golfing terms such as ‘Birdie,’
Bogey’ and Eagle’ become incidental in
‘Match Play,’ because it is one player’s
score against his/her opponent and not
against the scorecard that counts.
n ‘All Square,’ is when at any stage of a
match, both players have won/lost the
same number of holes.
n ‘Concession,’ is when a single hole,
or an entire match, is conceded by
the losing golfer, for whom all hope
of winning the hole or the match is
mathematically impossible.
Learning the Language
n ‘Dormie’ is when one golfer has won
enough holes to ensure he/she cannot
lose the match, for example, if the
golfer is two-up with two-to-play he/
she cannot lose.
There are certain terms that apply only
to ‘Match Play,’ revealing a rich and
colourful tradition of the earliest form of
the game of golf. As such, a number of
n ‘Gimmie,’ derived from the term ‘Give
Me,’ refers to a putt which one player
may not require his/her opponent to

been won/lost, or it is considered too
easy to miss.
n ‘Half’ or ‘Halved,’ is when each
player’s score on a particular hole is the
same.
n ‘Play-off,’ refers to the means of
deciding a match when the golfers have
finished the 18 holes having won/lost
the same number of holes.
n ‘Sudden Death,’ is the normal ‘Playoff’ format in ‘Match Play,’ the first
player to win an extra hole declared the
victor, winner-takes-all.
n ‘Up,’ or ‘Down,’ refers to the stateof-play at any stage of the match. The
player in the lead is ‘Up,’ the player
behind is ‘Down.’ Normally, the number
of holes the leading/trailing golfer is
ahead/behind is prefixed, eg, ‘2-up,’ or
‘1-down,’ etc.

A host of Major winners are teeing
it up but one man who will be more
motivated than most is South Africa’s
Branden Grace. The 23-year-old will
be looking to make it a hat-trick of
Volvo titles after winning the Volvo
Golf Champions in January and last
month’s Volvo China Open.
The final day of the Volvo World
Match Play Championship coincides
with Grace’s 24th birthday and what
a present that would be if he became
a Volvo grand-slam hero and the
third South African to win the most
prestigious match play championship
in world golf.
“To have three wins on The
European Tour at this stage of my
career is awesome,” said Grace after
securing a three-shot win over Nicolas
Colsaerts in China, “but to win the
prestigious Volvo China Open and to
have two Volvo titles is unbelievable.

The two Volvo titles are huge and then
the Joburg Open will always be very
special as the first Tour victory of my
career.”
Major champions in the field who
Grace will have to contend with are last
year’s Open Champion Darren Clarke,

in Spain in front of my home fans so I
think it will be a great week for me.”

THOMAS Björn had the best season of his career last
year with three victories, including back-to-back wins
at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles
and the Omega European Masters in Switzerland.
Björn began his 2011 campaign with an outstanding
victory at the Commercialbank Qatar Masters in
February and emerged victorious in Scotland in
August after winning a mammoth five man play-off.
He then carded a superb final round nine under par
62 to win at Crans-sur-Sierre the following week. He
went on to finish ninth on The Race to Dubai with
earnings of €1,814,115. Björn won the first of his
13 European Tour titles in 1997 at the Loch Lomond
World Invitational in Scotland and later that year went
on to become the first Dane to play in The Ryder Cup,

Cabrera-Bello made his breakthrough on The
European Tour in 2009 after a sensational final
round 60 helped him storm through the field for
victory at the Austrian Golf Open. Cabrera-Bello
grew up next to a golf course on the Canary Islands
and took up the game at the age of six. He won the
Spanish National Championship every year from
under-7 to under-18 level. Golf runs in the family
as his sister Emma also competes on the Ladies
European Tour.

PAUL Casey made a superb start to the 2011
European Tour season by winning the inaugural Volvo
Golf Champions in January but was unable to build
any momentum throughout the rest of the season
due to a troublesome injury to his toe. Casey, who
has 11 victories on The European Tour to his name
and one US PGA Tour title, was diagnosed last May
with ‘turf toe’ but recaptured his form in October with
a victory in Korea at the Shinhan Donghae Open.
In December he was dealt another injury blow after
suffering a dislocated shoulder in a snowboarding
accident and he returned to action in March at the
WGC-Cadillac Championship where in the final round
he hit a hole-in-one. Three-time Ryder Cup player
Casey won the biggest title of his career at the 2006
World Match Play Championship.

The Volvo China Open win earned him a place in the

on The Race to Dubai. So far this season Colsaerts
has five top tens to his name, including fourth place

first title on home soil at the Golf Nippon Series
JT Cup in 2003. He won a further four titles on
the Japan Golf Tour including The Crowns in 2009
before winning three titles on the Asian Tour in 2010.
Hiratsuka won the Air Bagan Myanmar Open, the
Queen’s Cup and the Black Mountain Masters to
end his 2010 campaign in fifth place on the order of

MARTIN Kaymer joined Golf’s elite in 2010 with a
play-off victory over American Bubba Watson at the
US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. His first
Major triumph was the second of four Tour wins that
year as he went on to win The Race to Dubai with
prize money earnings of €4,461,011. In addition to
winning the US PGA Championship in 2010 he won
the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, the KLM
Turned Pro: 2005
Open and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St
Andrews. Kaymer also made his Ryder Cup debut two
years ago at Celtic Manor, helping Europe to a famous
win contributing 2.5 points from four matches. Last
season Kaymer won his tenth European Tour event

last year with a one-stroke victory over Johan Edfors at
the Open de Andalucía de Golf by Turkish Airlines and
went on to finish the campaign in 18th place on The Race
to Dubai. Lawrie is best remembered for his victory in the
1999 Open Championship at Carnoustie where he came
from ten strokes back with a final round 67 to force a
famous play-off against Justin Leonard and Jean Van De

prestigio del Circuito Europeo vuelve a reunir en Finca
Cortesín a 24 de los mejores jugadores del mundo.
Este impresionante resort está situado en una de las zonas

the 2011 Volvo World Match Play
Championship, the course underwent
routine preparations to maintain and
display its immaculate condition once
more at this year’s Championship.
In the two previous editions players
were unanimous in rating the quality
of the field, the golf course and the

excellent.
The players were full of praise for
Finca Cortesín. Current World number
one Rory McIlroy said, “the greens at

intentar dejar la bola por debajo del hoyo
ya que se puede quedar un terrible putt en

the main characteristics of this green
is the absence of bunkers and the
great views of the Mediterranean
Sea. Without a doubt, this hole will
be recognised as one of the best in
Spain within a few years.

Long hitters will face a great challenge when they
play this hole. The green is very much in range but
the huge lake that protects the green will await all
tee shots that are not perfectly struck. For those
not going for the green, a long iron or fairway wood
removes most of the dangers. Beware of the slopes
on the green and the difficult pin positions.

se agradece en el caso que nuestro golpe no fuera muy
preciso y protegido por bunkers a la derecha. Podemos
decir que se trata del “monstruo” de este campo, solo
unos pocos privilegiados podrán patear para birdie en
este largísimo par 4.
Longest Par 4 on the Costa del Sol and stroke index
1 for Finca Cortesín. Hole 7 is just a “monster.” It has
a very wide fairway but the tee shot must avoid all the
bunkers to have a chance of reaching the green in
regulation. Second shot will require a long iron to a big
green with a lot of room on the left side. The green is
one of the fastest on the course with several downhill
putts that can ruin your chance of making par. Only inform golfers will putt for birdie.

arriesgar y tirar de dos green habrán de considerar el poco margen
de error que tienen, la parte izquierda del green está muy bien defendida por una zona de matorrales y severas pendientes.

go with a fairway wood off the tee. Second will
require great strategy since the lay-up area is

difficult approach to the green. Most players will go for the
green with a very short iron, but the green is so small that
many will miss the green and face a very delicate chip shot.
Check out the views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Gran
Hotel Cortesín. Number 9 is one of Finca Cortesín’s jewels.

Probably one of the best holes on the course. It’s
a spectacular par 3 with great views of Estepona
Mountains. Not very long but the green is very
small (Spanish guitar shaped) and very well
protected by a water hazard on the right side. Be
careful with the wind – club selection is always
difficult from the elevated tee.

esta protegido por obstáculo de agua en su parte frontal y lateral y bunkers a la derecha e izquierda. “Simplemente impresionante”. La zona del
green es una de las más bellas de todo el recorrido.
This is Finca Cortesín’s Signature hole. It’s a spectacular par 4, where
the drive is played to a wide fairway, avoiding a water hazard which runs
across the front of the green. Bunkers right and left complete what is
one Spain’s best green sites. The green is large and sloping, allowing
for several different pin positions that have as much an affect on the
approach shot as the putting.

difficult pin positions. The assortment of
awkwardly shaped bunkers on the left
side will entice us to hit the right side
which will leave very fast downhill chip
shots. Great hole to conquer when the
match is tight.

Just a great finishing hole. Reachable par 5 that allows
the big hitters to really let loose with the driver. The
fairway is the widest on the course and the second
shot leaves many options. Big hitters must consider
the green is very small and with Out-of-Bounds on
the left and right sides. For the average golfer, be
careful with the lay-up, for a huge bunker protects the
landing area only 100 metres from the green. Many
tournaments and matches are decided on this green.
