The Year of Mercy is a special time to celebrate this feast of Divine Mercy. You may be interested in the story of Divine Mercy Sunday (I found most of the following on the EWTN webpage): Feliz Domingo de la Divina Misericordia! The message of Divine Mercy came from the diary of a young Polish nun, now St. Faustina Kowalska, and a special Divine Mercy devotion began spreading throughout the world in the 1930s. The message is nothing new, but is a reminder of what the Church has always taught through Scripture and tradition: that God is merciful and forgiving and that we, too, must show mercy and forgiveness. But in the Divine Mercy devotion, the message takes on a powerful new focus, calling people to a deeper understanding that God’s love is unlimited and available to everyone — especially the greatest sinners. The message of mercy is that God loves us — all of us — no matter how great our sins. He wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy. It is a message we can call to mind simply by remembering ABC: A — Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly, repenting of our sins and asking Him to pour His mercy out upon us and upon the whole world. B — Be merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow through us to others. He wants us to extend love and forgiveness to others just as He does to us. C — Completely trust in Jesus. God wants us to know that the graces of His mercy are dependent upon our trust. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we will receive. May we all grow in God’s mercy this Easter Season, in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, and throughout our lives! Fr. B — Be (Ser) misericordioso. APRIL5-8 Communion Services Holy doors are traditionally found in the four papal major basilicas in Vatican City and Rome, and Pope Francis has encouraged each diocese to open a Holy Door at its cathedral, to which pilgrims can journey during the Jubilee Year. In Seattle, St. James Cathedral has designated its bronze doors, covered in depictions of stories of God’s mercy, as the church’s Holy Doors. Year of Mercy reflection SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY Last year on this Sunday, Pope Francis declared this year a Jubilee Year of Mercy. Saint John Paul II named the Second Sunday of Easter “Sunday of Divine Mercy” in response to Saint Faustina Kowalska’s Divine Mercy devotion, which offered spiritual comfort to hearts worldwide. But Francis challenges us to make that comfort we receive a gift we gladly share: “We are called to show mercy because mercy has first been shown to us.” The clearest expression of merciful love, says Francis, is pardoning others. “At times how hard it seems to forgive!” he acknowledges. “And yet pardon is the instrument placed into our fragile hands to attain serenity of heart” (Misericordiae Vultus, 9). The necessary condition for living joyfully? “To let go of anger, wrath, violence, and revenge.” May Divine Mercy Sunday in this Jubilee Year of Mercy remind us that Jesus made mercy our life’s ideal and a criterion for our faith’s credibility: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. St. Louise Charger Cards Charger Cards is a scrip fundraiser that our parish and school participate in yearround. St. Louise buys gift cards at a discount from a supplier and offers them for sale at face value. The difference in cost is what St. Louise keeps as a profit for our parish school. The average profit is $5 for every $100 of gift card. This is a unique fundraiser because you buy gift cards for stores that you already use. It is a rare fundraiser that doesn’t ask you to buy anything you don't already buy. The idea is that families buy groceries and gas (or spend at restaurants or other stores) that are in their normal budget. Instead of paying with a check or cash at the store, you pay with a gift card that you purchased from St. Louise. This way St. Louise School earns a small percentage of every normal purchase you make. Charger Cards are available outside the church today. There are hundreds of stores to select from. It's guaranteed that there is at least one store you are planning to shop at this week that you could first buy from St. Louise. 7th Annual Luncheon to Support Congregations for the Homeless Charger Cards are typically available on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month between Masses. MAY 6, 11:15AM-1PM Thank you for your support of St. Louise School with your purchase of Charger gift cards. Please join us Friday, May 6, to experience the journey homeless men undertake to develop independence and identity beyond their circumstances: Moving Beyond Homelessness. Keynote speaker Tom Miles will share his personal recovery from homelessness to becoming the lead Outreach Case Manager at CFH. This is a fundraising event with a donation request.
