Wednesday, August 17 at 7:30pm or Saturday, August 20 at 10:00am Bereavement Team Dinner Meeting Monday, August 8, 2016 7:15pm In the Rectory Dining Room It is important that all are present August 7, 2016 Through placing our faith in God and living according to His commands, we become a source of hope. As we read almost daily about terrorism and violence, it can seem like the good guys are losing. This is not the case. As long as believers in God’s ways exist, there is hope that love will overtake hate, good will overtake evil. Jesus’ perfect sacrifice of love upon the cross is definitive proof that the power of sin and evil has been defeated. What more do we need? It is a mandate of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles that all parish Volunteers and staff attend a Virtus workshop and be fingerprinted. If you serve in ministry or work or volunteer in the Parish, including, Lector, Extra Ordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Usher, Choir Member, Religious Ed teacher, OLF school volunteer/parent, or are part of the parish staff or OLF teachers, you are required to attend a 3 hour class and be recertified every 4 years. The 3 hour Protecting God’s Children, Virtus class has been scheduled here at Holy Family, on September 17,from 8:45am -12pm in the St Joseph Center. Registration is required because of limited space. To register please send an email to Johnathon Dang, at [email protected]. There are many other Parishes throughout the Archdiocese that hold these workshops and fingerprinting every month. The dates and details can be found at the Virtus Online website or Los Angeles Archdiocese Virtus schedule or for Fingerprinting schedule; Los Angeles Archdiocese fingerprinting schedule. (Registration is required for both). If you attend VIrtus or are fingerprinted at another Parish, be sure to turn in a copy of your certificate of attendance or the fingerprinting receipt, to your specific coordinator, or to the rectory, so that we can keep record of your attendance. August 7, 2016 The Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 5 From the Pastor’s Desk While walking behind the image of St. Elizabeth of Portugal from the Church to the Portuguese Hall, was given a glimpse of the rich cultural heritage of our wonderful parish. It was the annual mass of the Holy Spirit for our local Portuguese community and Artesia, at least for the last Sunday of July, became the epicenter of those from the Azores, attracting guests from all over Southern California. The sheer pageantry of the Queens, representing St. Elizabeth (once the Queen of Portugal) and the various traditional bands is worth the walk under the midday sun. Once you get to the hall you are treated to a generous serving of sopas, a dish whose name which is deceptive. It was a hearty meal in itself, rich with meat, cabbage and bread soaking in a marvelous broth. Fr. Luis was trying to explain to me the different elements of the “Festa” but instead of feeling lost and alienated by the tradition, I felt the connection between our cultures. It was something familiar. Our “Reynas” might represent another saint (Saint Helen, the mother of Constantine) but the processions are the same. The sopas is our Cocido (also common with the other Hispanics) which is a traditional Sunday meal. The more we learn about each other, the more we can be closer as a community. A good example is our English-Spanish bilingual masses every Tuesday mornings. It allows our parishioners a chance to share in the same sacred words of worship as our Hispanic brethren. Being a bilingual mass, it is inclusive and mutually informative. To be inclusive, we make sure that the proper responses in Spanish are flashed on screen so that all can join in. It is my hope to expand this into other liturgical languages as well. We will experiment with the Pilipino Mass (Pilipino is the language, Filipino is the people). Beginning September, instead of one Pilipino mass on the first Sunday, we will have two bilingual masses (English-Pilipino) on the first and the third Sundays. Patterned after our encouraging Spanish program, it is designed to be inclusive as well. The masses will mostly be in English, especially the Gospel and the preaching. Only the consecration and a short reading will be in Pilipino, and the proper responses and translations will be flashed to make sure all feel welcome and involved. I hope and pray that by learning a little about each other’s culture and faith story, we may all realize our similarities and build from there. May we be a truly vibrant and united community. The more we do things together, the more we become closer. The more we worship together, the easier it is for us to be truly one. 6 The Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 7, 2016 Religious Education Summer Office hours: Office is closed for summer (562) 860-5973 Confirmation Registration dates: 2016-2017 school year 9:30am-1:30pm JPII room (located next to REP office) Aug 7, 14, 21, 28 Fees: $100. one student $125. two students $150. three or more students For New Students: Parents submit a copy of the Baptismal certificate at registration. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with His anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. Parish Business Administration Class at Loyola Marymount University Extension As the church’s ministry grows in scope, reach, and complexity, each parish faces the challenge of administering its resources effectively and fairly, while at the same time achieving compliance with both civil and canon law. Increasingly, parishes look to lay professionals trained in administration to ensure that pastoral ministry can take place in such a way that both enhances and safeguards the mission of the church. As part of a continued long and fruitful relationship with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the certificate program in Parish Business Administration offers specialized training for those engaged or aspiring to engage in this pastoral service. Guest speakers will come from Archdiocesan offices and other institutions. Participants will be encouraged to present their own real-world experiences for class discussion. There are special tuition discounts for early enrollment, see website below for more details. BE NOT DECEIVED Do not be disturbed by the clamor of this world, which passes like a shadow. Do not let the false delights of a deceptive world deceive you. —St. Clare For more information contact: Center for Religion and Spirituality Loyola Marymount University 310.338.2799 [email protected] http://academics.lmu.edu/extension/programs/pba/ or Pat Joyce [email protected] 12 The Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Meets every 2nd Tuesday of the Month Please join us for our next meeting on August 16, 2016 at 7:15 p.m. at The Good Shepherd’s Room WE WELCOME NEW AND ACTIVE MEMBERS! I wanted to have dolls, ride a bike, go to the circus, and see the zoo. I looked forward to celebrating Christmas and receiving Jesus in Holy Communion. I'm very sad I never got to do any of these things. My parents did not let me be born. But I just don't understand one thing -- why didn't any of you help me? I wish you had. Nobody heard my crying voice. Mis padres no me dejaron nacer.
