since the famous designer Philippe
Starck (Paris, 1949) took control of
its restructuring. The result is fascinating to say the least, and positions

The extension of the marina means
there is enough space to moor boats
of up to 60 metres in length, so one

A new shopping centre could not be

On summer nights Pollença
becomes the island’s cultural capital with its festival, now in its 52nd year. Although
the main focus is on music, it also
includes the plastic arts, literature
and films in its carefully-designed
programme, which is endorsed
by over five decades of continuity. Most of the performances take
place in the elegant Claustro de
Santo Domingo, but conferences,
projections and exhibitions are also
held in other places such as the
patio of the Ayuntamiento or Town
Hall, the historic Hotel Formentor or
the streets of the town, which have
seen famous figures like politician
Winston Churchill or writer Agatha
Christie pass through them in search
of peace and inspiration.
Intellectuals and illustrious figures
from all over the world attend this
unmissable Mediterranean cultural event. Last year’s festival was
directed by Mallorcan composer
Joan Valent. Pianist Michael Nyman,
architect Norman foster, writer Eduardo Mendoza and film director Alex
de la Iglesia took part in it, among
others.

Ever since the year 1711
Bodegas Ribas has been
producing grapes by the
traditional method on its
vines – most of which are old vines
– on a piece of land covering over
40 hectares in the Consell municipality, overlooked by the Serra de
Tramuntana mountains. A love of
things well done has been handed
down from generation to generation
on this estate, and this is reflected
in its wine production: Ribas de
Cabrera, Ribas, Sió, Contrast or
SOMA, in its red, white and rosé
varieties.
Over the years the number of wineries on the island has grown considerably, but few take such meticulous
care over the process, from planting
the vine to uncorking the bottle, as
Ribas does. All part of the tradition.
And of respect for one’s roots.
Bodegas Ribas lleva desde
el año 1711 produciendo
uva al método tradicional
en sus cepas, mayoritariamente
cepas viejas, en un terreno de más
de 40 hectáreas en el municipio de
Consell, al abrigo de la Serra de Tramuntana. El amor por las cosas bien
hechas se ha transmitido de generación en generación en esta finca, lo
que se refleja en su producción de
vinos: Ribas de Cabrera, Ribas, Sió,
Contrast o SOMA, en sus variedades
de tinto, blanco y rosado.
Con los años el número de bodegas
ha aumentado considerablemente en
la isla, pero pocas miman el proceso
desde la plantación de la vid hasta
el descorche de la botella como en
Ribas, haciendo honor a los siglos
y las personas que levantaron e hicieron crecer la bodega. Cosas de la
tradición. Y del respeto por las raíces.

Zahl der Weinkeltereien auf der Insel
gestiegen. Nur wenige jedoch überwachen den Prozess vom Pflanzen
der Rebstöcke bis zum Entkorken der
Flasche so behutsam und gewissenhaft wie die Bodega Ribas. Eben aus
Tradition und aus Respekt vor den
Wurzeln und Ursprüngen.

The passage of different
civilisations throughout
history has left a wealth of reci-
pes that now comprise Mallorca’s
present-day cuisine. The French may
have internationalised the croissant,
but the Mallorcans did the same
with the ensaimada as a dessert and
sobrassada as a potted meat. But
there are many more typical delicacies, such as sopas mallorquinas, a
delicious mixture of vegetables and
brown bread; tumbet, also a vegetable dish; frito mallorquín, made with
meat or seafood; trampó, a salad
made using green pepper, tomato and
onion, perfect for summer; or arrós
brut, a rice dish with broth to warm
you up in winter. Pa amb oli, bread
with oil and tomato accompanied by
ham, cheese, botifarró or camaiot,
is another indispensable platter on
Mallorcan tables, alongside empanadas and cocarrois, pastries filled with
meat, fish or vegetables. Needless to
say all these dishes taste better if accompanied by a good local wine.

For centuries Formentor
was an unexplored peninsula in the northeast of Mallorca frequented only by pirates and
smugglers. Until 1929, when Argentinian poet Adan Diehl established
the Hotel Formentor, with the idea of
offering relevant 20th-century figures,
artists and creators an idyllic setting
in which to debate, share ideas and
naturally, rest beside the sea.
The success of the idea drew many
intellectuals and celebrities from our
history who ended up frequenting
both the hotel and the area. Some examples are the Dalai Lama, Princess
Grace Kelly, actor Charles Chaplin,

To reach the historic hotel you
must follow a winding path which
runs along the edge of the impressive cliffs. One compulsory stop is
the Formentor lighthouse, isolated
from all civilisation, which guides
lonesome sailors at night out to a
distance of up to 21 nautical miles,
around the cliffs which tower up to a
height of over 200 metres.
As for the beach where the hotel
stands, it has a charm that makes
it stand out from the rest. Its waters
are crystalline, and a row of pine
trees slopes down towards the sea,
creating pleasant shadows and a romantic scene which is the cherry on
top of this jewel of the north coast of
Mallorca.
