The Foreign Language Department has produced the second volume of a literary magazine, written solely by Queens University of Charlotte students to give them a voice. This second issue of Words of the World illustrates variation in human language. We have included contributions in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. I hope that even those not fluent in other languages enjoy reading this volume and exploring different world languages. The second volume of Words of the World was produced by Liliana Wendorff. All students enrolled in language classes at Queens University of Charlotte are welcome to submit poetry, fiction, and short works of nonfiction for possible publication in future volumes. Un full-time job. Unos hijos más. Un full-time y part-time job. Volevo capire quella lingua bellissima. Volevo parlare con quelle persone amichevoli. Volevo imparare l‘italiano. Me sentí descorazonada. “No sé, ábrelo,” ella me contestó. -No sé. “It seems to be a Pancho Villa story, and it makes me feel proud that he was my dad, taking from the rich to give to the poor. But he was mean and it scares me.” My mom, Delia, is the youngest of all the five children. There are more children but they are bastardos, as my grandmother has told me. When she says it, there’s no change in tone, no sign of resentment. My aunts and uncles, my mom and even my grandmother have come to accept that the past is the past, holding no grudges against no one. Not against my grandfather, whom I grew up thinking was just a cuddly bear with his big round panza. No grudges against the ones who tried to kill Froylán, or to those who tried to kill them as a family. It amazes me. When I hear of the woman who was so loca, that she would go sleep with my grandpa while my grandmother slept on the floor, I get furious with jealousy and resentment. I hear that all the time. I noticed his popularity when he was on his deathbed. Mom announced to the family one day:“Los doctores le han dado tres meses, dicen que el cáncer de los pulmones se le ha regado por todo el cuerpo”. Everyone wept. One month later, my grandpa had passed away. In that month’s time, we had well over a hundred visitors, I’m sure of it. Leo in English and in Español. Cuando me preguntan que soy, pienso, Mexican-American. Mexican comes first, so I just say, “I’m Mexican.” “Really? Where from?” I laugh. I always have to give all these explanations. My dad is from the north, Querétaro, and my mom is from Guerrero, a southwestern Mexican state. I was born in Florida, but was raised in North Carolina. “Ahhh, entonces eres gringa.” No. I’m MexicanAmerican, and my Mexican background comes first. Denying it would be ridiculous, especially because I take after my mother’s side of the family, which has the stereotypical native features. Black hair, tanned skin, and dark brown eyes. I speak English well, because I’ve gone to school here my entire life- heck I was born here. But there are things, little things I still hold on to, just to make sure I don’t forget where I come from. Can’t say I’m “Made in Mexico” like many of my friends do. But I can say I’m Mexican. I’m American. My youngest brother took after my dad’s side of the family. He could get away with just saying I’m Americano. In fact, that’s what he used to say. But my family is very prideful of our Mexican background. And when we heard him say that to us, well, we all threw a fit. Poor Josh, he was only five. My parents have had their share of witnessing the Americanization of Mexicans. They resist it, and they criticize those who reject their roots. My parents are the ones that came to the U.S. illegally, worked the fields like burros, who now have citizenship and legal residency. Me? I’m on that blurry line, dividing brown from white, the one who sees both cultures in its worst and best shapes. I am a MexicanAmerican. “Soy mexicana-americana.” Así les contesto. Y se ríen. Courtney Walker is from Peachtree City, GA, and is doublemajoring in Spanish and Organizational Communication. Courtney yearns to learn Spanish so that she will be able to build relationships with others on a broader scale. The ability to communicate in multiple languages fascinates her. In order to pursue her goal of becoming bilingual, Courtney will study abroad at the Universidad de Uruguay in Montevideo, Uruguay for the 2012-2013 academic year.
