Weekly Message
Dear sisters and brothers
in Christ,
If you are like me, you must have
watched one or two events of the
Olympics. As the 2016 Rio Olympics come to a close this Sunday,
one cannot help but marvel at the
influence of sports on the world. The event saw
the best in sports of over 200 countries competing for medals and national pride. It was so
beautiful to hear the United States anthem sang
over and over again as Team USA claimed the
gold medal in many different events. While some
celebrated their victory with cheers and smiles,
others shed tears of joy. This event brought people of all cultures and languages around the
world together for a common purpose. Countries
that are at war put aside their hatred and focused on winning medals based on merit and
hard work. What a sense of unity! The athletes
put in a lot of hours, resources and talents to
prepare for the competition. They have to discipline themselves to practice well in order to even
compete. All of that was for medals and national
pride. Every one of the athletes put in their very
best and came to compete, but one by one, it
came down to a few athletes who got the medals.
As I watched the events, I could not help but
think about St. Paul, who described our spiritual
journey as a race for a prize. “Do you not realize
that, though all the runners in the stadium take
part in the race, only one of them gets the prize?
Run like that – to win. Every athlete concentrates completely on training, and this is to win a
wreath that will wither, whereas ours will never
wither” (1 Corinthians 9:24-25).
In today’s gospel, Jesus was asked if only a few
will be saved. Rather than give a direct answer,
Jesus spoke about entering through the narrow
door. When we think of the narrow door, we often think that only a few will be able to enter.
That may not necessarily be true. However,
those who could enter must be people without
unnecessary baggage that could prevent one
from entering. They are people who are patient
and who follow the orders and rules set by the
Master. Salvation, according to Jesus, does not
depend on how often we ate or drank with him,
but rather on how we use the energy provided by
the food and drink. The fundamentalists believe
that receiving Jesus as “a personal Lord and savior” is all that matters. “Faith alone is enough,”
they say, but Jesus says we have to make an effort to go through the narrow door. There are
some who approach life with the idea that anything and everything that gives pleasure is good.
For them, there is no moral imperative because
rules get in the way of pleasure.
As Catholics, we believe that our faith must bear
fruit in good works. The road less traveled is the
narrow way - the road of conversion, the road of
discipline. The second reading today from the
Letter to the Hebrews, quoting Proverbs 3:11-12,
said: “My son, do not disdain the discipline of
the Lord … for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines.” Discipline as training that corrects,
molds or perfects the mental faculties or moral
character is a word that many, particularly the
young ones, in today’s society do not want to
hear. Yet, it is proof of God’s love for us. A disciplined person has self-control, is courteous, gentle, kind and considerate. This is what entering
through the narrow door means. Discipline is
needed to be a successful athlete and to win
Olympic medals, but it is also necessary in our
spiritual race to attain eternity with God.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
This Jubilee Year of Mercy and Pope Francis’s ministry have renewed our understanding that the Church’s heart is open wide
to all and that the heart of the gospel is God’s mercy. Flooded with God’s mercy, our hearts should overflow as channels bringing to wounded and weary hearts Jesus’s healing mercy. For Jesus warns that our own salvation is not guaranteed by the Liturgy of the Word (“you taught in our streets”) nor by the Eucharist (“we ate and drank in your company”) (Luke 13:26). People
far from that banquet, “from the east and the west and from the north and the south . . . will recline at table in the kingdom of
God” (13:29). Rather, showing mercy is key to obtaining mercy ourselves (Matthew 5:7). So, we should never dare ask what
“someone” asked Jesus: “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” (Luke 13:23). The crucial question is “Will I be saved?” And
Jesus’s answer is another question: “Have you shown mercy to everyone, freely, gladly, no limits, no conditions, no exceptions?”

Next weekend’s second collection is for
the support of the Missionary Society of
St. Paul, the order of priests that are serving our
parish. The Missionary Society of St. Paul has a total of 270 priests serving in 18 countries around the
world. They have 100 seminarians in their seminary
in Nigeria. They would love to admit more candidates who are interested in the priesthood, but
they do not have enough resources to do so. Your
generous giving will assist them in the training of
more priests to serve in the Church.
Thank you for your generosity.
VIRTUS Training
The next “Protecting God’s Children” VIRTUS class here at St.
Mary Magdalene Catholic Church will be held on Wednesday, September
7th, 2016 from 6 to 9 P.M. in room 215 of the Educational Building.
The Archdiocesan Office of Safe Environment requires that all volunteers
and employees of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church attend VIRTUS
Training.
If you took the Protecting God’s Children class before 2010, you MUST
take a Keeping the Promise Alive refresher class to maintain your VIRTUS status. If you do not complete the refresher, you CANNOT participate in anything involving minors.
Please make every effort to maintain your VIRTUS status. Visit
www.virtus.org for registration. If you have any questions, please contact

FESTIVAL OF MINISTRIES. . .
COMING SEPTEMBER 10 & 11!
What is Stewardship?
Stewardship is a way of life. It is a way of partici‐
pating in our Church and a way to bring God in‐
to the center of our daily lives.
Stewardship is not “our effort” but “our re‐
sponse” to God – with our Time, Talent and
Treasure – because of our relationship with him.
This relationship exists through his Son, Jesus
Christ. We practice good stewardship not to re‐
ceive gratitude but to express our gratitude
in the special relationship that is yours and mine
with our loving God!
Our Parish Stewardship Committee plans
and executes the Annual Renewal &
Recruitment Event –
“Festival of Ministries.”
The event includes a series of focuses on
Stewardship education and celebration of
the ministries in the Parish.
Time, Talent and Treasure are discussed and
commitments are requested.
The Festival will be held after all Masses the
weekend of September 10 and 11 in the
Family Life Center.
Investigate parish opportunities to renew your
ministry commitment and sign up for another OR
make a commitment to become involved in
YOUR PARISH LIFE!
Enjoy fellowship and refreshments!!!

2016- 2017 Formation / CCE Registration: If you still need to sign up
your child(ren) for next year’s formation and sacrament preparation
classes, please attend our final
“regular registration” event this Saturday, August 27th from 2:00pm - 5:00pm in the Fa
mily Life Center. This will be the ONLY opportunity to register for CCE before classes begin the
week of September 18th. Please note that CCE tuition is expected to be paid in full at the time of registration, though no one will be turned away due to
an inability to pay… All you need to do is talk to
Fr. Felix before August 27th, and he can approve a
tuition waiver. For those who miss the August 27th
event, we will accept “late registrations” on Sunday, October 2nd… Absences will accrue for students who miss classes due to late registration.
Catechists for 2016 - 2017: Do you
enjoy being Catholic? Want to share
you faith with others? We are looking
for about 38 adult men and women
(aged 21 - ??) to share their faith with
our children and youth in the Faith
Formation / CCE programs at St. Mary Magdalene.
There are many grade levels available, three different sessions scheduled throughout the week, and
even 2-month “mini-mesters” if you can’t commit to
a full 22-week catechetical year! You don’t have to
be a professional teacher - though you are also welcome! - or have all the answers; if you love your faith
and like kids, we need you! God’s already given
you what you need. It’s time to respond and be a
light in the darkness. The children of our parish are
coming to learn about the Catholic faith… Will you
be there? Please contact Mike Smith at [email protected] or (281) 446-2933.
“Youth Night”: Due to popular demand, we have
added a “Back-to-School” event for our high school
youth on Sunday, August 21st from 6:30pm - 8:00pm
in the Youth Room. Bring a friend and a snack! With
“open houses” at most middle schools on Thursday,
August 25th, we have cancelled our youth event for
that evening!
Next week: High school “Ice Cream Sundae Social”
on Sunday, August 28th… plus, a middle school
“Surprise Night” youth event on Thursday, September
1st.
Catechist Training Sessions: There are six (6) trainings coming up for new and returning catechists.
These CCE sessions are designed to introduce catechists to the leader guides, classroom procedures, and
other important stuff! You only need to attend one (1)
of the following six dates: Sunday, August 28th
(3:00pm); Tuesday, August 30th (6:00pm); Wednesday, August 31st (6:00pm); Sunday, September 11th
(3:00pm); Tuesday, September 13th (6:00pm); and
Wednesday, September 14th (6:00pm). The trainings
will be held in the St. Paul Center, which sits at the
corner of Isaacks Road and Ferguson Street.
High School Men and Ladies: We are starting a new
and exciting book study series for high school guys
and ladies on Sunday, September 11th … It is called
“Sons of the King / Daughters of the King.” We
will meet twice a month to discuss how you can live
your Catholic faith and what it means to be a Catholic
young person. This is a fresh, new take on Catholic
identity… Come on by and see what it’s all about.

Children’s News and Adult Faith Formation
From The Ultimate Catholic Quiz by Karl Keating (Ignatius Press; Ignatius.com)
(Reprinted with permission)
Can you correctly answer this question?
Q. The Sacrament of Confession (a) almost always must be received before receiving Communion by anyone guilty of an unconfessed mortal sin; (b) is not necessary
because you can privately confess your sins to God; (c) must
be received by all adult Catholics at least once a year (one of
the six precepts of the Church); (d) is useless if you have
committed murder, sodomy, oppression of the poor, or defrauding workers of their just wages; (e) none of the above.
Come to serve: As our Savior came to serve, not to be
served, please prayerfully consider whether God is calling
you to serve as a catechist. We need more faithful Catholics
to aid in the faith formation of the next generation. Please
contact Mike or Ginger for information about serving as a
catechist.
FINAL CCE Registration for 2016-2017: Saturday, August 27th from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm Our final registration
event is coming up next Saturday! Come to the Family Life

Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reading I: Isaiah 66:18-21
People will gather in God's name from all the nations. The
reading from the final chapter of Isaiah refers to a time when
the people of Israel believed that they could remain faithful
to the covenant by separating from peoples who were not
chosen. In today's passage, the point is made that all humankind will worship in Jerusalem. Some Gentiles would
even serve as priests and Levites, which was unheard of in
the religious belief of the time.
Reading II: Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13
Your trials in life bring you strength. By designating Christians as children of God, the Letter to the Hebrews makes an
important point. Like the divine Son, disciples share in the
glory of God through the cross. In this passage, human suffering is interpreted as evidence that God is disciplining the
children He loves to bring them to maturity.
Gospel: Luke 13:22-30
Some who are last will be first, and some who are first will
be last. The Gospel reading from Luke is a collection of
sayings warning disciples to be faithful and prepared. The
image of a narrow door indicates the difficulties involved in
following Jesus. In the Gospel of Luke, “table fellowship”
is a primary sign of discipleship. To eat with Jesus is to
share His life; to share His life is to share His cross.
The answer is (a). If you have committed a mortal sin, you may
not receive Communion until after you have gone to sacramental
Confession “unless there is a grave reason and no opportunity to
confess” (Canon Law # 916).

Important Truths About Forgiveness
Ivana T. Meshell, Director of Adult Faith Formation
As we progress through the Year of Mercy, we understand that forgiveness is an important
aspect of mercy. Our parish is hosting a “Forgiveness Seminar” to be held on Saturday,
September 17. In anticipation of that event, here begins a series on forgiveness based on
presentations I have given. I hope it will be a fitting “warm-up!”
Forgiving does not mean forgetting.
Forgiving does not mean that past hurts will not be remembered. In fact, some hurts may never be truly forgotten. Forgetting isn’t necessary. Forgiving simply means that we no longer harbor ill will towards the person
or persons who offended us. It’s learning to let go of the past hurt.
Forgiveness does not mean you necessarily “get over it.”
You may never completely get over it. You stretch your capacity to bear the loss. You still feel the pain and
yet choose to go on. Only by God’s grace are we able to do this!
Forgiveness doesn’t mean allowing people to use you as a “doormat”.
Forgiving doesn’t mean allowing people to use or abuse us. Sometimes we need to remember what happened and learn from our pain so that we can set clear boundaries that will minimize the possibility that same
hurt will occur again. “Forgive and forget” means we don’t continue to hold the transgression against the person. It doesn’t mean we suddenly can’t (or shouldn’t) remember what happened.
It doesn’t mean facilitating another person’s negative behavior.
It doesn’t mean enabling the offender to repeat the same negative behavior over and over again. If the same
offense occurs repeatedly, we have a right to say, “no”—forgiving, but not facilitating, the repetition of the behavior.
Forgiveness is not weakness.
It takes a strong person to forgive. It takes courage and strength of character to do the kind of inner work that
forgiveness requires. A forgiving person is a person who is conscious of his or her own sinfulness, weakness
and mortality. A forgiving person realizes that he or she doesn’t have it all together, either.
All forgiveness is self-forgiveness, since your experience of the world is a result of your state of consciousness, then if you hate anyone, you are disliking a part of yourself.
—Raymond Charles Barker
Forgiveness is not a feeling.
Forgiveness is not a feeling, since love is not a feeling. Love is a decision. Love is a choice to act in a certain
way. Forgiveness is a choice to work with our thoughts and behaviors, which eventually enable our feelings
to change. Forgiveness does not require us to feel compassionate towards another person—it requires that
we act compassionately toward another, even when we don’t feel like it. It’s choosing to set free the one who
has offended us.
Forgiveness is not only about forgiving moral transgressions. Sometimes it’s merely about accepting the way things are. I find myself being angry at funerals. I want to kick something. True, it’s silly to be
angry with a dead person. I find that anger is part of my dealing with the pain of loss.
Forgiveness is accepting the weaknesses of our humanity. Some of us do a better job of acting on
our better impulses, some of us do not. Some of us make better, more life-giving choices, some of us do not.
Some people are very far away from being able to make good, moral choices. They have come to a state of
vice that is so debilitating that they do things that deeply wound others. This is part of our human condition
from which we need salvation.
Forgiveness is for all, even strangers. Forgiveness is merciful restraint, generosity, and love. It's a
kindness that extends even to total strangers that have no claim on us except that we are all members of the
human family.

Mensaje del Párroco
Queridos hermanos y
no quieren escuchar.

Dios.

¡Nosotros ejercemos corresponsabilidad buena
