INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL 21-16 44TH ROAD, LONG ISLAND CITY, NY 11101 PHONE: 718-937-4270 FAX: 718-937-5236 Dear Members of the Class of 2016: On behalf of the administration, faculty, and staff at Information Technology High School, welcome to the ITHS family and your freshmen orientation for the 2012-2013 school year. Your four years at ITHS will provide you with a multitude of opportunities to develop your skills and to contribute to both the school and community. In an effort to make the transition to high school as smooth and easy as possible, we have prepared a th work package for you to complete over the summer and return to us September 6 , 2012. The package comprises worksheet activities for English, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Please follow the instructions for completing each package: English Language Arts Package includes: Mr. Max Monde (A.P English Dept.) • Summer Reading list. Select a Novel from the list and complete either side of the plot pyramid with complete details from the text. It would be great if you cite page numbers on where you get the supporting details from the text. For example, if you identified Conflict then cite the pages where there is a conflict. th • Vocabulary Word List: study all 60 SAT vocabulary words to do well on the September 20 , 2012 formative assessment. • Frayer’s Graphic Organizer: is a vocabulary development tool. In contrast with a straight definition, the model helps to develop a better understanding of complex concepts by having students define 12 SAT Vocabulary Words (select 2 from each of the 6 groups), write a sentence for each, and give as many synonyms and antonyms for each word. Place 1 or 2 words in the center of the diagram that you will define. You would need to make as many photocopies of the graphic organizer that you may need to complete this activity. • Library Cards: you will be issued a library card from ITHS that you can use at any NYC public library. Follow the instructions to activate your library card. Math: Mr. Cedric Hinds (Assistant Principal Math Department) • There are 50-100 math problems for you to solve. You must answer all questions and show how you solved each problem. Science: Mr. Cedric Hinds (Assistant Principal Math Department) • There are also scientific vocabulary words for you to study. • Complete the two activities and return all completed work on the first day of return. Social Studies: Mr. Sean Killian (Assistant Principal Social Studies Department) • There are questions for you to answer. You may also have to complete a DBQ, so write clearly and concisely. You must answer all questions. We encourage all parents to support and monitor their children’s work load. We look forward to seeing you and hope the program will be an enjoyable opportunity to get to know ITHS’ administration, faculty, and staff and make the transition from middle to high school as comfortable as possible.
