Manassas, Virginia ALL SAINTS CATHOLIC CHURCH This year of 2016-2017, our parish theme is We have found the Messiah. … Come and you will see. based on John 1:39, 41 All Saints is a tithing parish, giving of our time, talent, and treasure so as to give glory to God. In today’s Gospel parable of the cunning steward, we find that Jesus is not telling us to be dishonest. Remember that a parable is meant to surprise (or even shock us to consider something). It is to lead us to a consideration of the major focus of the parable, not all of the minor details of the parable. Rather, Jesus is urging us to show some initiative and not be lukewarm in our commitment to him. I offer some questions to consider for initiative in our spiritual life: Is prayer significant enough for me to be a part of my daily schedule or do I treat this conversation with God as an afterthought? Do I see the Catholic Church as founded by Jesus Christ and entrusted with the fullest means to lead me to salvation? Do I allow my conscience to be formed by the teaching of the Church? Do I take some of my time to share my talents with others, or am I only concerned about my own pleasure? Do I see Sunday Mass not only as an obligation, but as an opportunity to fulfill Jesus’ command to “do this in memory of me,” by being a part of the gathered, worshipping assembly in union with Christ? Today is National Catechetical Sunday. The theme is Prayer: The Faith Prayed. To love and serve God, we must know God and his plan for us. Catechesis is religious instruction. It is for all ages: children, youth, and adults. Thank you to all of the catechists in the parish who, by word and example, instruct others in what it means to live our Catholic Faith. Catechists are found in our Religious Education program for children and youth, in our parish school, in the RCIA process, and in other adult education forum. May the Holy Spirit guide you to pass on the Truth who is Jesus Christ. Thank you! Father Lee Roos School Mass: Wed., Sept. 14, at 8:30 am. September 18, 2016 A ltar S erver T raining : N ew and R eturning New Servers: Boys and girls at least 10 years old and in 5th grade or above who would like to be Altar Servers, for either the English or Spanish Masses, need to attend two (out of three) training sessions this fall. A parent should plan to attend these sessions with their child and the session will last about an hour. If you have any questions, please call Peg at the parish office (703-368-4500) or e-mail the lay coordinators (altarservers @ allsaintsva . org ). Returning Servers: Boys and girls who are already Altar Servers for the English Masses need to attend one of two training sessions offered for returning servers in order to remain active. A parent should plan to attend with their child, as there will also be a parent session this year, and the session will last about a half hour. Questions? Contact Lynn Pechiney (lapech 86@ verizon . net ). What to Expect: Servers can expect to serve one weekend Mass per month. Mass assignments are based upon each server’s stated preference. We are in need of servers who would be available for daily Masses as well. Service at daily Mass would be more frequent. Over the course of the next year, we plan to roll this out to the various liturgical ministries, starting first with English Masses and limited ministries, and later in the year adding the Spanish Masses. MSP is used by a number of parishes. Its key advantage, once it is in full use, is that families with different members in liturgical ministries can be scheduled for the same Mass on a weekend and it is easier to request substitutes. Parents of new and returning servers who will serve at the English Masses are asked to attend an orientation session for MSP at the same time their child is attending the training. Deacon Ralph Goldsmith will conduct the MSP training at the location shown above for the parent meeting place. Is your son currently in grades 1–5? The following information is provided so that we can all best work together to communicate to parishioners and visitors in a timely manner. Bulletin: For an item to be considered for inclusion in the bulletin, it must be received at the parish office by noon of Wedneday, 11 days before the Sunday in which it is requested to be included. This is to give the parish staff adequate time for approvals, layout, and review of the bulletin before we submit it to our publisher. Please be brief but include the Who, What, When, Where, and Why of the event. Please indicate the date(s) in which your ministry/organization would like the item to be in the bulletin. We strive to accommodate requests as we are able to do so. Items may be sent to Linda Gaynord, Bulletin Coordinator (lgaynord @ allsaintsva . org ). Flyers: We used to stuff flyers in bulletins by hand. Because of the effort involved, we now include them electronically when the bulletin is sent to our bulletin publisher. If you would like to request a quarter-page, half- page, or fullpage item for inclusion in the bulletin, please submit a PDF (digital) version of the flyer/notice. The same bulletin deadlines apply as above. A quarter-page item is preferred as we may be able to include it more than we would a larger sized item. If you can submit a request even earlier, that would be better, as we try to plan what major notices will be in bulletins 4-6 weeks ahead. Mass Announcements: Items to be requested as announcements at the end of Mass should be submitted by Thursday, at least two (2) weeks, before the intended Sunday. We try to limit announcements to those most necessary. Handouts after Mass: There are limited times when handouts may be distributed after Mass. All such actions require pre-approval. Submit your request to the parish office at least three (3) weeks before the intended Sunday. Tables: If your ministry or group would like to have a table set up in the narthex (vestibule) or outside the church, for use before or after Sunday Masses, please submit your request at least three (3) weeks before the event, as we have to approve and coordinate between various groups. We limit the number of tables in those areas. It is good for you to provide this information early in September (for Autumn) and in December (for Winter/Spring), so we can anticipate what needs there are, as various events are scheduled on the parish calendar. The service is a Franciscan devotion to ritually remember the passing of St. Francis from this life into God and is celebrated annually by Franciscans all over the world. Each individual in the program needs a sponsor. As a representative of the faith community, the sponsor is a companion on the journey to full membership. Sponsors offer advice and encouragement and grow together with the person they sponsor as they share their faith together. There are many adults and young people who do not have someone in their lives to make that commitment. If you are interested or willing to share your faith experience with someone who wishes to join the Church, contact the Religious Education office (703-393-2142). Samantha Welsh, Director, will be glad to speak with you about the program. OktoberFest is at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Sat., Oct. 15.
