WILLIAM CATHOLIC CHURCH / OUR LADY OF GRACE CATHOLIC CHURCH FORT LUPTON, CO My dear Parishioners, Every year, Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago offers a special Mass for couples who are celebrating their fiftieth anniversary. There were so many couples celebrating their fiftieth anniversary of marriage that families and friends were forced to watch the Mass from an adjoining building! The term Pentecost literally means "fiftieth" and was celebrated as a feast on the fiftieth day following Passover in the time of Jesus. Today, of course, we know and celebrate Pentecost as the birthday of the Church, when the disciples were unified by the Holy Spirit and empowered as one to bring the Word to the world. The final act of the New Covenant is the gift of the Holy Spirit, who is described as "Advocate" and "Spirit of truth." Jesus tells us in today's Gospel reading from John that all that God has given him will now be given to us. In this sense, the truth that we are given is the one truth which cannot be denied, and that is that the only path to the kingdom of heaven and the saving grace of our Lord is through true, unfaltering belief and love in Jesus Christ. And that truth is not to be kept to ourselves, but joyfully shared with others without fear or doubt. It is up to us. On the day of Pentecost, the Church was given to the world through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. "The gift of the Spirit ushers in a new era in the 'dispensation of the mystery,' the age of the Church, during which Christ manifests, makes present, and communicates his work of salvation through the liturgy of his Church" (CCC 1076). From a tiny spark 2,000 years ago, the Church has blazed forth like a raging fire throughout the world. Each and every one of us who believes has been given a part in this celebration, a gift we cannot deny. Fr. Greg Please pray for the repose of the souls of those who died: Why is Pentecost also called “Whitsunday” in Englishspeaking countries? Today we celebrate Pentecost, the New Testament Greek name for fifty days after Easter, to honor the presence, role and function of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians. Pentecost is also the Jewish Feast of Weeks or Shavuot, exactly fifty days after Passover, celebrating the giving of the Law to Moses on Mount Sinai, while thanking God for the first fruits of the grain harvest. Pentecost is also known as “Whitsunday” in Englishspeaking countries. The origin of Whitsunday is uncertain, but the most common explanation has Whitsunday originating in Old English as the term for "White Sunday," a reference to the white robes worn by those newly baptized at Pentecost. The early Church traditionally baptized only on Easter and Pentecost, which are liturgical celebrations with strong baptismal themes. A less common explanation is that Whitsunday originally meant "Wisdom Sunday," in honor of the outpouring of the Spirit of Wisdom celebrated on this day. In baptism, the primary gift of wisdom, along with the other gifts of the Spirit descend upon the newly -initiated, as they did on the apostles on that first Pentecost. Whatever name Christians use for the feast of Pentecost, the essence of the feast centers on the role of the Spirit as the source of unity, wisdom and guidance on our faith journey. Today would be an excellent opportunity to gather with fellow Christians to thank God for the gift of the Spirit and to pray for wisdom in living out our Christian lives. Office volunteers . Pentecost Sunday May 31, 2009 May 2009 ST. WILLIAM Stewardship is what I do after I say “I believe!” ST. WILLIAM’S CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY Did you know... … that the growth of St. William’s as a parish was brought about by the arrival to Fort Lupton of agricultural and food-processing plant workers who were mostly Hispanic Catholics; ...that in 1955, the Archbishop of Denver, ArchbishopVehr, and Msgr. Mulroy, director of Catholic Charities, formed a Special Committee on Migrant Labor Problems, which focused on the Fort Lupton Farm Labor Center; ...that in 1955, the pastor of St. William’s, Fr. John W. Scannell, moved his residence from Platteville to Fort Lupton, owing to the fact that Fort Lupton had more Catholic families as members (500 families), while St. Nicholas’ in Platteville only had 125 families. ANIVERSARIO CENTENARIO DE SAN GUILLERMO Supiste... SOLEMN HIGH MASS ON JUNE 21 IN HONOR OF ST. WILLIAM While the feast of St. William is really on June 25, however, for practical and convenient reasons, “St. William Day” will be celebrated on June 21, Sunday. Archbishop Chaput will celebrate a Solemn High Mass, bilingually in English and Spanish, together with some other former priests who have served at St. William’s. The Mass will be at 12:00 noon. (Therefore, there will be no 11:15 a.m. Mass in English nor the 1:00 p.m. Mass in Spanish). Since this is the Mass that celebrates the 100 years of existence of St. William Parish, we are urging our parishioners to attend this historical Mass. Save the date and be part of history! After the Mass, there will be a potluck/picnic on the church grounds. We will have music and entertainment as well as games for the young ones and for the once young. .
