S ports have no values; it is the people who have them. And that translates to the corporate world. Both sports and the working world provide the context, the rules, the rivals and the competition. What does it take to be a top performer without being a case of job stress or job burnout? You can define a corporate athlete as a person who is strong in the different dimensions - physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. There are many comparisons between elite athletes and executives, since both seek a sustainable high performance in environments of pressure and rapid change, both for themselves and their teams. We must start by identifying what makes some shine under pressure and others not. Some conditions include the reward, the culture and the management by objectives. The problem with some approaches is that they focus on connecting high performance mainly with cognitive ability, covering time management and positive and critical thinking skills. Thus, we begin to see the creation of numerous gamification companies that use mobile phone apps to collect cognitive and emotional traits in order to find the best fit with vacancies in companies. In recent years, we have witnessed another approach in the relationship between emotional intelligence and high performance, while there are others that focus on the spiritual dimension. For some, the word “spiritual” does not at first glance seem so relevant to high performance. However, it refers to the energy from the deepest values and a sense of purpose that affects performance. The real enemy of high performance is not stress, which in fact serves as a stimulus to grow, but it is chronic stress without recovery time that leads to job burnout. To achieve sustained high performance, you must have elements of different dimensions and consider the whole person: Physical capacity contributes to endurance and helps with mental and emotional recovery. Emotional capacity is what leads one to pursue a state of ideal performance. Mental capacity focuses the physical and emotional energy on the objective and finally, the spiritual capacity provides a powerful source of motivation, focus, determination and endurance. It has always fascinated me how executives can apply the techniques used by elite athletes when they face demands that seem insurmountable in the workplace. It is precisely the term corporate athlete that refers to these executives. If they are going to have to perform at high levels over the long term, they should somehow train in the same systematic way that elite athletes do. To begin with the training, it is not to focus on the primary skills. That is, how to score a goal, execute a jump or throw a ball. The same in the business world. We will not focus on core competencies such as public speaking, negotiating or performing a financial analysis. We must focus our efforts on helping executives strengthen their capacity in secondary skills such as strength, agility, self-control and focus. The increased capacity at all levels allows both athletes and executives to use their talents and skills to sustain high performance over time, while they use positive energy from each dimension. The real enemy of high performance is not stress, which in fact serves as a stimulus to grow, but it is chronic stress without recovery time that leads to job burnout. However, there is an important difference. Usually, a professional athlete spends most of his time training and less time competing, unlike the corporate athlete who spends very little time training, but must perform on demand during at least 10, 12, 14 hours a day. Not to mention that the career of a professional athlete is usually much shorter than that of an executive, who can work from 40 to 50 years. To help with career management, some rules to know where to put the limit as a corporate athlete: • Disconnect from work-related emails and phone calls during vacations. • Remember that the art of management includes the ability to delegate to other persons and plan your personal agenda intelligently. • Exercise regularly, doing something that you really like and that gives you energy, supplemented by a healthy diet and getting enough sleep. • Spend your time with the people who really matter to you and make clear boundaries between work and home, to have not only more satisfaction from relationships, but also the recovery necessary to perform better at work. • Have regular medical checkups to prevent and resolve potential health problems. While there are many external conditions that corporate athletes don’t have the power to change, they can train themselves to better manage their internal state, using all their capabilities to overcome the most difficult circumstances and leave periods of stress stronger, healthier and prepared for the next challenge.
