Hair Cut-A-Thon
April 20, 2013
More than 90 participants joined Childhood Cancer Foundation of Southern California for the Hair Cut-A-Thon events at the Alexis Victoria Salon & Spa in Redlands
and Riverside City College Cosmetology School. Haircuts, head shaves, manicures,
pedicures and face painting was available for a minimal donation. Israel Rivas, Marleny Bailon, Katelynn Calderon, Silvia Garcia, Karen Tortolero, and Rodolfo Escobar,
are all cancer survivors who joined the event to assist in shaving heads and cutting
12-inch hair donations.
Israel was more than excited to work the clippers and shave Michael Cook’s head.
Cook, a Fort Irwin Firefighter, planted the seed for this event and fundraiser by calling Childhood Cancer Foundation of Southern California in 2005 and offering to
have his head shaved by a child with cancer to show his support of all those fighting
this disease.
CCFSC raised over $2,800 and collected 44 foot-long donations at the Cut-A-Thons
that were sent in to Wigs for Kids, an organization dedicated to providing wigs for
children with cancer. Throughout the years, the group has collected more than 200
such donations with the support of the community. Thank you to Michael Cook,
the Riverside City College Cosmetology School, the Alexis Victoria Salon & Spa in
Redlands, the Redlands Fire Department and all our volunteers for their support of
this amazing event!

for Kids, una organización dedicada a
proporcionar pelucas para niños con
cáncer. A través de los años, el grupo
ha recaudado más de 200 donaciones
con el apoyo de la comunidad. ¡Gracias
May 4, 2013
CCFSC Board members hosted an
amazing Cinco de Mayo dinner on unit
4800 the evening of May 4th. All the
families on the unit (as well as some
very lucky nurses!) enjoyed a very tasty
meal of shredded beef with the works!
Dancing chicken, rice, beans, salsas,
guacamole and chips, or as we called
it: the “Sampler.” The conference room
was transformed into a Mexican Fiesta
with lots of decorations and festive
music. And you can’t forget dessert!
We had yummy home-baked cupcakes. Delicious! A special thank you
to Jose’s Mexican Food Restaurant and
all the Board members for preparing
wonderful dishes and making this dinner possible.

Family Camp
May 31-June 2, 2013
The 8th Family Camp Session for CCFSC families was held on May
31 - June 2 at the Thousand Pines Christian Camp in Crestline. The
3 day-2 night adventure began with a meet ‘n’ greet in the Malt
Shop with all the kids and their parents. We played a quick game
of “Neighbors” and Heads up 7-up. That evening we had a campfire filled with lots of songs, fun games, and yummy ‘smores.
There were plenty of activities for everyone to enjoy throughout
the weekend. Parents were very lucky to join the children for target practice at the Paintball field. Everyone enjoyed a weekend
filled with lots of arts & crafts, courage course achievement, climbing wall and zip line and outdoor games. Thousand Pines treated
our group to fresh baked cinnamon rolls followed by a night hike.
We would like to give a special thank you to our Family Camp
Sponsors: the Silver Dollar Club and Thousand Pines Camp! Thank
you for offering us the opportunity to share a fun-filled weekend
with the families. We would also like to thank the wonderful staff
at Thousand Pines for their kindness and care, and our volunteer
chaperones that helped us make this weekend of fun possible.

Jugamos un juego rápido de “Vecinos” y Heads up 7-up. Esa noche

Family picnic
June 9, 2013
Childhood Cancer Foundation of Southern
California together with California Correctional Peace Officers Association provided
a Family Picnic for families with a child with
cancer at Hunter Hobby Park in Riverside,
CA. Picnic was held Sunday, June 9 from
11:30am-3:00pm. CCFSC provides this event
in hopes of brightening the day for not only
the cancer patients but the entire family.
Children with cancer and their families enjoyed a fun filled day where they participated in Water Balloon Tosses, Three Legged
Races, Tug-A-War, and much more. The Live
Steamers provided free train rides for participating families and the California Correctional Peace Officers Association barbecued
delicious hamburgers and hot dogs for all
to enjoy. Families escape from their daily
lives at the hospital and have a great time
in an ‘old-fashioned’ family picnic. There’s no
better medicine than being surrounded by
family, friends, and good food!

Jocelyne’s Quinceañera
Jocelyne is 15 years old, a soon to be sophomore at West Valley High School. She recently celebrated her fifteenth birthday with a
traditional “quinceañera” where she decided to have guests donate to Childhood Cancer Foundation of Southern California in lieu
of gifts for herself.
“I heard about Childhood Cancer Foundation of Southern California through a close friend of mine who has been helped by this
organization. I wanted to help others, so I decided to have guests donate. God has given me many gifts. He has given me the gift
of life, health, family, and friends; which is everything I need. The greatest gift that we as people can give is not a materialistic one,
but the gift of hope.” - Jocelyne
Jocelyne donated an amazing gift of $552 to Childhood Cancer Foundation! Thank you Jocelyne and Montoya family for your
generosity in honor of Kenya and all children diagnosed with cancer!

Whitewater Overnight Camp
May 11-12, 2013
Teen Connection braved the heat and bugs and enjoyed a day in
nature during its first overnight camp at the Whitewater Preserve.
The Whitewater Preserve is 2,826 acres surrounded by the San Gorgonio Wilderness that includes the year-round Whitewater River.
The campgrounds are overshadowed by steep vertical cliffs where
bighorn sheep are often spotted. Teen Connection arrived early af-

ternoon on Saturday to set-up camp then soon prepared lunch
and headed out to the wilderness. The heat led us to first cool
off with some water fun, then head out on a hike. We ended the
day at our campsite with various games and some hot chocolate. Thank you to the Wildlands Conservency Whitewater Preserve for allowing us this opportunity. A special thank you to
Kristin Kersey and Vincent Meza for joining Teen Connection on
this adventure in the wilderness.
Campamento Whitewater
11-12 Mayo 2013
Pirate Dinner Adventure
June 29, 2013
The Teen Connection crew embarked on a Pirate Adventure for
the June trip. The teens set aboard an authentically replicated
18th-century Spanish ship anchored in a 300,000 gallon indoor
lagoon with night sky lighting. The Teen Connection “voyagers”
had their own pirate mascot, the Purple Pirate, to cheer on as
the adventure unfolded with a cast that engaged in a bounty
of action-packed exploits, accompanied by cannon blasts, pyrotechnics and plenty of laughs. And of course, a meal to enjoy
as the show went on. A special thank you to Kristin Kersey for
joining the pirate crew on this adventure.
