The year has started off with a bang and is not showing signs of slowing down! Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate the artists at our inaugural Colors of Down Syndrome art show hosted in January- it was a wonderful turnout! Thank you to everyone who helped out and attended the Sweetheart Luncheon & Fashion show- this year was the largest to date! You can find a few photos on page 6. The events don't end there though, we have lots to look forward to in the next few months; 5 & Under socials in May & June, Tee Up for Down Syndrome, Family Fiesta & much, much more! Be sure to check out all the details in this issue of the news letter and those to come. This year brings some exciting changes for the DSACC office- as you know we moved to the Shaw/Fruit area in November, and our new facility is now easier to access. Be sure to stop by and see what we have to offer our members- such as our resource library, which we are now expanding! Thanks to the wonderful support of the Hillblom Foundation, we are in the process of updating our library with new resource books and videos for our members to check out or view in the comfort of the DSACC library. We are also able to add a computer for our members to use! We will be loading the computer with programs to help teach your child different skills, allow you access to online resources and more! Members can expect this project to be completed by late April 2013. Until then, please feel free to come check out the resources already available. 2013 is looking bright & busy and we cannot thank you enough for your continued support and participation in our programs and at our events. When your child correlates using his voice and getting what he wants, he will be more motivated to use it again and again. It is also important to give your child what they are asking for immediately after they make the request. The sooner he gets what he is asking for, the bigger the impact. Some children may become frustrated when they realize that they have to “work” for items that were previously given freely. It may be helpful to start with just a few highly desired objects/activities until language attempts are being made more frequently. Our favorite items for increasing speech and language skills (and some of the words we use!): 1. Bubbles (open, blow, pop, more) 2. Balls (throw, go, up, down, bounce) 3. Cars/trucks/trains (vroom-vroom, go, stop, drive, crash) 4. Anything that spins (go, stop, spin, fast, slow) 5. Slinky (boing, long, short, look through and say, “I see you”, put on your head and “sneeze” it off) 6. Tickles (tickle, me, you, label where you should tickle them) 7. Puzzles (in, out, labeling and requesting pieces by the picture) 8. Magnets (on, off, noun labels, stuck) 9. Squeeze or pull toys (pull, squeeze, more, my turn, go) 10. A box full of these toys (open, all words listed above for each toy) * play with one at a time! When working with young children, motivation is the key to success. We all do better when we have an incentive to do so. Imagine going to work without receiving a paycheck…would you still want to show up? Motivation can come from a variety of sources so follow your child’s lead and use the items or activities they are showing interest in to create a “teachable moment”. We typically do this by interfering with the activity so the child must communicate to continue with what they are involved in. For example, if your child is playing with a train you can get in the way of the train so they have to ask you to move, you can take part of the train/tracks so they can request it again, or you can stop the train until you child says “choo-choo” or “go”. You can hand your child a bottle of bubbles that they cannot open so interaction must occur in order for them to gain access to blowing the bubbles. Be creative in thinking of ways to ensure that communication has to occur in order to have the most fun. When planning to use any of these techniques with your child, you first need to determine what type of response you are looking for. Responses can range from a gesture or sign, a single sound, sound combinations, words, or phrases/sentences. It is helpful to start your expectations with a skill that your child is able to perform, and then increase your expectations gradually. At the beginning, ANY EFFORT counts. Your goal is to make your child feel successful and realize the power of his voice. If your child is requesting juice, model the word “juice” and look expectantly at him. Model the word without giving him the juice until he attempts to say the word. If his first attempt sounds like, “ah”, hand him the juice and praise him for “asking” for the juice. After he does this a few Amber Ladd, MA-CCC, SLP, BCBA Amy Prince, MA-CCC, SLP, BCBA www.thetalkteam.com Email us at: [email protected] Or call (559)549-7343 Or find us on Facebook Colors of Down Syndrome Over 22 artists and 60 art pieces created by our loved ones with Down syndrome were on display at Boling Fine Arts Gallery in January to help raise awareness in the community about the talents and creativity of our members.
