EUCD1527 MARK ATKINS - Didgeridoo
EUCD1527 MARK ATKINS - Didgeridoo Dreamtime Mark Atkins, a descendant of the Yarnijti people, Widi tribe is one of the great artists on the didgeridoo. He has honed his skills on this instrument to perfection, to imitating animal calls while playing and even to changing the note of the didgeridoo. On this CD he presents the didgeridoo in its traditional style, but also together with modern instruments. EUCD/MC1224 BUSH FIRE - Didgeridoo Music of the Australian Aborigines Bushfire was recorded in the Kimberleys in Australia and features some of the finest musicians of the region. There are rwo sryles of songs on the album, Wongga and Djunba, which are traditional styles that have been in existence for thousands of years. EUCD/MC1341 AUTHENTIC ABORIGINAL MUSIC - Music from the Wandjina People Aboriginal Music is the only music indigenous and unique to Australia. All the artists on this album are members of the Wunambul tribe. Songmen travel extensively to spread new songs and to keep alive the old traditional songs. EUCD1432 DAVID CORTER - Didgeridoo Mania The indigenous instrument of Australia, the didgeridoo, has raised its profile and fascination in recent years and has even arrived in the mainstream being featured on many hit albums world-wide. This album takes the didgeridoo into the 21st century and is an extraordinary projection of the variations this instrument can produce. o c Q) III ...J EUCD1654 Planet Didge - Axis An exciting new Didgeridoo-CD from Australia. Ground-breaking funky rhythms using only didgeridoos as well as the didges played as a "horn" with a warm, mellow and melodic sound! Plus combinations of both the above, and in various combinations with other instruments, such as cello, violin, drums, bass and keyboards, concluding with a dance track . TJILATJILA THE DIDJERIDU AND MUSIC Pronounced with a silent 't' tjilatjila means steady and gentle movement to the Western Desert Australian Aborigines. This entirely acoustic recording creates a calm mood through its midtempo didjeridu rhythms, piano and string melodies and soft wood horn tones created specially for Tjilatjila. The continuous drone of the didjeridu is the archetypal sound of the vast Australian outback and the natural acoustic ambience of Tjilatjila evokes the landscapes and creatures that inspired most of the songs. According to George Chaloupka's history of Aboriginal art in Arnhem Land A Journey in Time, didjeridu playing began between 2,000 and 1,500 years ago on the coast of the Northern Territory THE CYCLE RHYTHM Traditional Aboriginal music is difficult for most people to appreciate as it does not have the regular timing like 4/4 or 6/8 endemic to contemporary music. Good examples of traditional music are: Music of the Wandjina People ARC Music (EUCD1341) and Didjeridu Master MRAI Latisphere. The warm feeling created by the songs is also a tribute to the euphoric mood experienced by playing didjeridu. Experienced players learn a special technique called cycle breathing to create a continuous rhythrmc overtone. Cycle breathing involves applying diaphragm pressure to exhale and inhaling only via the nose, and this process is similar to the breath exercises of yoga. Slow rhythms create a relaxed feeling and more vigorous rhythms are exhilarating. Contrary to some observers didj euphoria is not caused by hyperventilation, as cycle breathing is a controlled aerobic action which has a lor in common with the breath exercises taught by the Russian physician Alexi Beutoyko to treat asthma. The Beswick waterhole of Australia. In the 20th century it spread to other pans of the Australian continent. In traditional Aboriginal music didjeridu is a secular instrument played as accompaniment for song and dance that may be public entertainment or ceremonial. Traditional didjeridu has rarely been played as a solo instrument. Out of respect for the traditional artists, the principal writer and producer of Tjilatjila, Charlie McMahon has developed his own style in a contemporary mode. For Tjilatjila he developed the concept of wood trumpets or the didj horns. By blowing didjeridus with the firm embrochure used for trumpets and the like, a horn tone is made. Charlie tuned many didjeridus for each note in the chromatic scale. These notes are heard as the warm hoots of horn tones in most of the tracks on Tjilatjila and they create harmonics, sympathetic to the didjeridu overtone rhythms. Tjilatjila creates its amazing beauty through the harmony of its pans. The low frequency didjeridu rhythms are joined to the high piano and string melodies by the mid range didj horn tones, on tracks like Plateau and Wugularr. On Snake and Shadows the didj horns are the sole accompaniment to the didjeridu overtone rhythms. The didj horns concept has inspired other contemporary didjeridu players such as the M. Jackson & M. Edwards Axis (ARC Music, EUCDI654). CHARLIE McMAHON With over 40 years experience playing didj Charlie McMahtm is a most accomplished didjeridu player. He is responsible for many innovations in contemporary didjeridu. Charlie's first public recognition came in the late 1970's and early 1980's when he joined Australia's Midnight Oil for occasional jams on stage while on breaks from working in the bush. For six years he worked developing water and other essential services for Aboriginal communities who were reclaiming traditional lands in the Gibson and Great Sandy deserts. To give more scope for experimenting with didjeridu in contemporary music Charlie formed Gondwanaland Project in 1981, a band that pre-figured world music by a decade. Their first album Terra Incognita released in 1983 was the first didjeridu based album and showed how didjeridu could be a driving force in contemporary and released four more albums. music. Gondwanaland toured Australia-wide To expand the potential for didjeridu in music Charlie invented the pitch shift Didjeribone which has a range of ten drone and 12 horn tones. The Didjeribone enabled the playing of more complex songs on the Travelling Songs CD released in 1994. The Didjeribone has been taken up by prominenr didj players. More information on the Didjeribone is available at www.didjeribone.com. Recently Charlie invented a device called the 'Face Bass' for the Gondwana: xenopbon CD. The FaceBass creates an extraordinary didj sound by recording from inside the mouth, and Charlie has added dance music parties to his repertoire with this powerful new didj sound. Aborigines in traditional didj playing areas appreciate Charlie's didjeridu playing for its originality and he remains the only non-Aboriginal player who has played extensively in Arnhem Land communities. Traditional song-men have also co-written songs with Charlie and Gondwana. The documentary 'Didjeridu: Journey to Discover the Roots of Didjeridu Playing in Arnhem Land' filmed for ABC Television presented by Charlie is available on video from Log Music. Some younger Aboriginal didjeridu players have adopted rhythms and techniques developed by Charlie. The Tjilatjila songs are an integral part of Gondwana's live repertoire. Charlie tours world-wide performing at concerts and teaching didjeridu. Tour dates are posted on his homepage www.charliemcmahon.com along with a more detailed biography. ::- ::.
