Nevertheless, we do recognize signs of hope. Since 2006, abortions in Florida

We are united in our resolve to pursue full legal recognition of the right to life of
every unborn child. We will continue to support pregnant women and their
children, and work and pray to bring to an end this modern day “slaughter of
the innocents”. 40 years after Roe v. Wade, abortion is not a settled issue in
America.

The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Snippets from the Catechism: The Gospel of John
John 2: 1 – 11
The Christmas Season closed out last weekend with our celebration of the Baptism of the Lord and we enter Ordinary Time.
Since we are in the year of Luke’s gospel, we would expect the gospel reading today to be from the gospel of Luke, but the
church has a bit of a surprise for us. For the Second Sunday of the Year, the gospel is always taken from John. This year
we are blessed with the story of Jesus’ first miracle at the Wedding Feast at Cana. This gospel provides a significant
source for three important teachings in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). Paragraph 1335 of the CCC makes
the point that there is a strong connection between the multiplication of the loaves and the changing of water into wine.
Both of these events speak of God’s Eucharistic abundance – everyone is fed with the bread that is blessed, broken, and
shared, and the best wine is served in abundance. This is the “new wine that has become the Blood of Christ.” Paragraph
1613 of the CCC reminds us that by Jesus’ very presence at this wedding, the church “sees in it the confirmation of the
goodness of marriage and the proclamation that thenceforth marriage will be an efficacious sign of Christ’s presence.” This
speaks of the sacramental nature of marriage itself. Lastly, paragraph 2618 of the CCC teaches that this story “reveals to us
how Mary prays and intercedes in faith.”
This little snippet only begins to probe the deeper meaning of this wonderful event at Cana – but that is all we can do in this
limited space. Go to the catechism and look deeper, there is more to find.
