SURPRISES
Life is full of surprises, some pleasant, some not. The
scriptures are filled with stories of God's surprises cropping up when they are least expected: younger children
obtaining the inheritance; the lowliest being seated
highest up; an itinerant preacher, killed like a criminal,
exalted to eternal, heavenly glory. Anybody who has
planned a wedding or similar event knows that they are
filled with opportunities for surprises. For the bridegroom in today's Gospel story, who has no direct contact
with Jesus, the pleasant surprise came because somebody else paid attention and had faith in Jesus. We may
think that the point of today's familiar story of the wedding at Cana is that when we have faith in Jesus, our lives
will be pleasantly changed. A Christian, however, needs
to have a broader perspective and realize that to have
faith in Christ means that somebody's life not necessarily our own-will be surprised for the better.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Although our tradition carries a long memory of
marriage as a sacrament, it may surprise you to learn
that for nearly eleven centuries, there was no single wedding ceremony approved for use in the Church. While we
have evidence of priests blessing marriages as early as
the second century, in the early period church leaders
relied on civil authorities to manage marriage for everyone in society. In most cases, society yielded its authority
to sanction marriage to the male heads of households.
From ancient times, marriage had been a family
affair, managed by the father of the family, who acted as
priest and guardian of family tradition. Each head wanted to keep the family gods alive, and so he would arrange for brides for his sons, paying a "bride price" as
compensation for the loss of a skilled household worker.
As creepy as that sounds, it was a step up from the kidnapping practice of earlier years. Even after the kidnapping raids stopped, the customs remained. Every wedding contained the ritualized kidnapping of the bride,
the husband abducting his bride from the festivities, carrying her over the threshold to prevent her father's gods
from following her into her new religion. There, he fed
her a piece of "sacred cake," initiating her into a new way
of life. It's fascinating to see how customs endure, long
after we have completely rejected the values and attitudes they originally expressed!

SORPRESAS
La vida esta llena de sorpresas, algunas agradables,
otras no. La Sagrada Escritura esta llena de relatos
sabré las sorpresas de Dios que surgen donde menos
se esperan: los hijos mas j6venes reciben la herencia,
a los mas humildes se les dan los sitios de honor; un
predicador itinerante, condenado a morir como un
criminal, es exaltado hacia la gloria celestial etema.
Cualquiera que haya planificado una boda o celebraci6n similar sabe que esta llena de oportunidades para que surjan sorpresas. Para el novio (el cual, en el
relata biblico, no tiene contacto directo con Jesus) la
agradable sorpresa vino porque otra persona habia
prestado atenci6n y tenia fe en Jesus.
A lo mejor pensamos que la lecci6n de la conocida
historia de las bodas de Cana es que cuando tenemos fe en Jesus, nuestra vida cambiara positivamente. Sin embargo, un cristiano necesita tener una perspectiva mas amplia, y darse cuenta que tener fe en
Cristo implica que la vida de alguien -sea la tuya, sea
la de otra persona- va a mejorarse sorpresivamente.
TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
En 1502 el fraile Nicolas de Ovando y doce franciscanos dieron inicio ala evangelizaci6n de América en la
Republica Dominicana. Ellos fueron enviados por los
reyes españoles con el mandata de convertir a los
nativos "sin les hacer fuerza alguna".
Con los misioneros llegaron Alfonso y Antonio Trejo
quienes traían con ellos un cuadro de la Virgen Maria
bajo la advocaci6n de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia. Ellos la llevaron a Higuey, donde en 1572 se le
construy6 su primer santuario. Poco a poco esta pequeña imagen se convirti6 en la Reina del coraz6n de
los dominicanos.
Maria observa dulcemente a su recién nacido quien
yace sobres las pajas. Esta coronada y lleva puesto un
manto azul rociada de estrellas y un escapulario blanco. Lleva una aureola hecha de doce estrellas. En una
esquina de la imagen san Jose también observa al
niño por encima del hombro derecho de Maria.
El 25 de enero del1979 Juan Pablo II la corona por ser
la primera evangelizadora del continente Americana.
Con ella los dice misioneros trajeron la Alta Gracia de
Jesucristo a nuestras tierras.

names “Mother of Mercy,” at
Cana intercedes with her Son
to show mercy toward the
bridal couple: “Son, they have
no wine.” But he does more!
Jesus’ transformation of water
into wine is a “sign” (John’s
term for “miracle”) that God’s
marriage with the whole human race has begun in Jesus’
person and ministry, a marriage that will be consummated on the cross: “It is
finished”—we are saved! But before Jesus acts,
Mary instructs the servers to prepare the way for
Jesus’ miracle of mercy: “Do whatever he tells you.”
During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Mother Church,
like Mother Mary, instructs us to share the Spirit’s
manifold gifts—some of which Paul lists in today’s
second reading—in generous service to the human
family. Thus we prepare the way for Jesus’ new
miracles of mercy, transforming life’s sometimes
stagnant water into the refreshing wine of God’s
mercy.

Por la boda de Cana, la tradición católica llama a María “Madre de la Misericordia”, pues
ella intercede ante su Hijo para mostrar misericordia a los novios: “Hijo, no les queda
vino”. ¡Jesús hace algo más! Para Jesús esa
transformación que hace del agua en vino es
un “signo” (la palabra que usa Juan es
“milagro”) que es el matrimonio de Dios con
toda la humanidad que empezó en la persona de Jesús y su ministerio y que será consumado en la Cruz: “todo está cumplido”,
¡somos salvados! Pero antes que Jesús haga
algo, María dijo a los que estaban sirviendo
preparar el camino para el milagro de la misericordia de Jesús: “Hagan lo que él les diga”. Durante este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia, la “Madre Iglesia”, como la Madre María,
nos dice que compartamos los dones del Espíritu, algunos de los cuales Pablo enlista en
la segunda lectura de hoy, en un servicio generoso a la familia y así preparar el camino
para los nuevos milagros de misericordia de
Jesús, transformando la vida; algunas veces el
agua estancada en un vino refrescante de la
misericordia de Dios.

of abuse, how you handle this information is critical
to their well-being. One of the most important things
you can do when a child discloses their abuse is not
over react, despite the strong and often overwhelming emotions of anger that you are experiencing at
that moment. Be certain that you show the child
great love and concern through calm, reflective words

parents and guardians and it’s the program for Safety
towards physical contact.

Unidos en Misión
In today’s readings we are told of the different gifts,
forms of service, and workings that come from God.
These manifestations of the Spirit come to fruition
through us, for we have ability to give the gifts of faith,
healing, and of mighty deeds.
De las lecturas de hoy nos enteramos de los diferentes dones, formas de servicio y funcionamiento que vienen de
Dios. Estas manifestaciones del Espíritu vienen a la vida a
través de nosotros, porque tenemos capacidad de dar a los
dones de la fe, la curación y de milagros.
Today God calls upon each one of us here to share our
gifts with our brothers and sisters in Christ that are in
need of them. Through Together in Mission we can share
our mighty deeds and give the healing and faith to the
communities that simply would not be here without
them.

puede perdérselo este año! El 23 de enero 2016,
únete al Arzobispo Gómez y decenas de miles de
personas en el centro de Los Ángeles para el segundo
evento anual UnaVida LA, un evento que celebra la
belleza y la dignidad de cada ser humano desde la
concepción hasta la muerte natural. Comenzando al
mediodía en La Placita/Olvera St., caminaremos hacia
Grand Park para un día familiar donde habrán
conferencistas, música en vivo, entretenimiento,
camiones de comida, y puestos de organizaciones
comunitarias que sirven a personas necesitadas.
Concluiremos con la Misa de “Réquiem para los No
Nacidos” en la catedral a las 5PM. Reserva buses y
