PASTOR’S Reflection
My
dear
brothers
sisters,
and
The teachings from weeks past about
prayer, true treasure, responsibility,
loyalty and service find their fulfillment
today in Jesus’ urgent call to make a
radical decision in our lives about His
own person. The profound decision we
are called to make is to choose Him as
our Lord and Messiah, to make Him the
real center of our lives. It is a choice of
faith, but it is expressed and reflected in
all the aspects of our life. Our
relationship with neighbor, our sense of
responsibility and our willingness to
serve. In all of them an attitude of
listening and welcoming Jesus’ Word
and person is present, the Word
Incarnate, Himself, who brings us into a
relationship of sons and daughters of the
Father. This decision is radical because,
ultimately, all those attitudes can be
summed up as a disposition to give life.
This is precisely what Jesus is doing,
living a life consecrated to His Father
and the wellbeing of His brothers and
sisters, ending up with death on the
Cross, the purifying fire of a total love
which overcomes sin and death itself.
Jesus is not a “permissive” teacher
who’s come to bring us the sugar to
falsely sweeten life’s hardships. Truly,
when we sweeten the image we have of
Him, we are wronging not only Him, but
His message as well. Jesus, Teacher and
Messiah, is a man of hard decisions
which withstand difficult detachments.
By choosing the way of the Cross, not
evading the harder and darker
dimensions of human life – consequence
of sin and distancing ourselves from God
– Jesus is making His own those
detachments which imply rejecting false
ways to salvation, which are so
persistently presented to us every day;
such as enjoying life as the only possible
good.
Since the disposition to give one’s
life for Truth and Good implies a strong
will and the ability to make difficult
decisions, even if that brings about
conflict and risks to one’s own peace and
wellbeing. Those are the conflicts Jesus
speaks of today, when he talks about the
division and the sword He has come to
bring to the world. The choice for faith,
the choice to follow Him till the end
frequently implies to go against the
mainstream, to inspire enmity in our
surroundings;
for
those
decisions are
at the same
time,
a
denunciation
hard to bear.
It is only
natural that Jesus speaks today about
fire, sword and division. He is calling us
to the ultimate freedom, able to make
that decision in faith which more often
than not makes us break away from
what’s accepted as normal, walk against
the flow and face enmity even of those
closest to us. But we need to know that
we are not alone on this journey, just like
the author of the Letter to the Hebrews
says: a cloud of witnesses surrounds us,
gives us an example, helps us rid
ourselves of every burden – like the sin
of selfishness and laziness, which bind
us to run the race that lies before each
one of us. For we each have our own
journey and our own cross, and we
shouldn’t withdraw from the race, we
should be faithful to our own true
vocation, even if that leads us to
difficulties, or conflicts. One of those
witnesses is the prophet Jeremiah, who
made of his whole life a witness of
commitment to an uncomfortable truth,
one his fellow countrymen were not
ready to accept, seduced as they were by
false securities. Jeremiah was faithful to
his death amid many persecutions. May
we, like Jeremiah, all prophets and
martyrs of all time, be willing to give our
life to follow Jesus.

Cross of the Apostolate:
The Flames
The Heart is surrounded by
“material fire”, as though it were in a
fireplace. But “eventhough above it
there are, as if erup ng from inside, a
different type of flames, like tongues of
fire in different degrees of heat.” (Ap.
Cross 1-2) They signify the “sweet love
of communion” and
“the love of
union” (Ap C. 20-21)
Among the text of Sacred Scripture
that sustain the symbolism of fire, one
finds John the Bap st: “He will bap ze
you with the Holy Spirit and with
fire” (Mt 3:11). For him, fire becomes
purifica on. The dimension of this
symbol is broadened in Luke (12:49): “I
have come to bring fire upon the earth,
and how I wish it were already blazing.”
Dionisius Aeropagite (The celes al
hierarchy) underlines many elements of
this symbol. The fire illuminates
everything without the flames merging.
It makes a gi if itself, regenera ng
beings with its life-giving warmth. It
penetrates ma er. It is both constant
energy and dynamism. Whoever enters
this
dynamism
experiences
its
destruc ve, life-giving and transforming
force.”
The Heart of Jesus is a complex
figure. The Heart is wounded,
surrounded by a crown of thorns. It is
open at the top and gives forth flames.
Above everything, and embedded in the
heart, is a ny cross. It is not an ordinary
heart, but a heart that has been
inserted into the historical drama of the
Cross of Christ that has become
glorious. Such a representa on, directs
the contempla ve person toward the
spiritual movement based on faith in
the historical passion of Christ.

AFamilySpirit
—————Fr. Mario Rodriguez, MSpS—————
Fr Felix Rougier always instilled in the
Missionaries of the Holy Spirit that there should
abound among us a Family Spirit. From the
moment I entered the Seminary in the 7th grade I
started learning that truth in a profound way. In the
Seminary we were all brothers who lived in the
same community because God had called us to the
same vocation. I learnt to accept and love every
member of my community, and that has been an
exercise I’ve had to do many times over. I have
learnt to discover in each member of my different
religious communities a brother God has placed in
my way; I must confess that it is not always easy to
accept the way they are, and I imagine it is also
hard for them to accept the way I am.
Today I think God’s invitation is for all of us in this parish to build a community of brothers and sisters.
Together we must learn to discover Jesus’ love and fill ourselves completely of an unconditional love for God. We
are invited to discover our own vocation in the midst of this community where God has placed us. I don’t think it is
a coincidence that we are in this parish together; we are here because God chose us first. God has taken the first step
towards placing us together, and that way we can make the Family Spirt grow among us.
Each one of you is a brother and sister to me. I invite you to build this beautiful community together, and take
care to make it grow and become a true “amazing parish” which can become a model for others. I invite you to
accept each other just the way we are; knowing full well that only God is perfect, we are not. Let us advance in the
building of the Kingdom of God and the Priestly People. In this Year of Mercy, may the Lord grant us a merciful
heart, similar to His.

Espı́ritu de Familia
—————P. Mario Rodriguez, MSpS————
—
Aprendí a ir aceptando y queriendo a
muchas veces.

fieles a nuestra auténtica vocación, aunque ello comporte

A WAITING HARVEST
Vocation Awareness
Seven Steps for Discernment:
5. Action
He called them, and immediately they
left their boat and their father and
followed him.
(Mt 4:21-22)
Once your decision is made, throw
yourself into it! Do not let fear overcome you, throw yourself into your decision
along with your fear. Make use of the necessary resources to undertake what
you have decided. Resist the temptation of postponing your admission to a
formation house, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me …” (Lk 9:61).
Entering the seminary or postulancy is the beginning of a journey. However, it
is not the final commitment, like priestly ordination or final vows would be.
Formation years are also a time for discernment. If you live generously in
everything you are asked and are transparent with those helping to form you ,
God will enable you to see clearly if this is your real vocation or not, and He
will bestow His grace on you to make the final commitment, or to continue your
Christian life as a lay person.
CHRIST SPOKE of
the talents each one of us has,
talents which must not buried.
Our calling is to take those
talents, develop them fully, and
then use them in establishing
His kingdom on earth. Are you
using your talents to fulfill your
vocation to service? Take some
time today to reflect on how
you might use your special
talents in the service of the
Kingdom.
Jesus tells you, “He who wishes to come after me must deny himself, and take
up his cross daily and follow me.” (Lk 9:23) The vocational path is difficult,
more than you imagine: get ready for the fight. The journey is thorny and
sometimes dark. Be brave and trust. Mary is with you, and the Holy Spirit
strengthens you so you can make it.
On the other hand, fully devoting your life to God and completely dedicating
yourself to the service of others is very beautiful, more than what you may
think: get ready to enjoy and be happy.
By taking this step you may say, like Peter, “We have given up everything and
followed you.” (Mk 10:28)”
