larity of Mission is an important part of any
organization. A system of oversight contributes
to Mission Effectiveness. Stakeholders, at every level,
advance a given mission. The Catholic Church is a
mission driven organization. Oversight in the Catholic
Church is provided on many levels in order to preserve
the essential unity that Christ has entrusted to the
Church. Stakeholders in the Catholic Church range
from His Holiness, The Pope as the first among all the
bishops, right on to the faithful gathered in parish
churches throughout the world. Some are ordained for
service; some have made religious profession as
members of the consecrated life; others, including the
two aforementioned, are part of the baptized: women,
men (young & old, married & single) and children are
all called to the life of holiness as the Priestly People of
God living in the midst of the world and all of its
concerns.
Whenever I have the opportunity to travel,
domestically or internationally, I like to observe how
things are happening within a particular culture or
organization. It is enlightening to learn how the same
goals are achieved by different methods. The Catholic
Church is about bringing people to God through Christ
Jesus. This evangelization is directed by the teachers,
magisterium, of the church. This teaching body is the
college of bishops. It is important for us to note that
theologians and exegetes support the on-going
development of doctrine. Homilists and Catechists
help to integrate the teachings of the Church into the
life of God’s Holy People. Parents, having been
adequately catechized as children and continuing their
own formation as adults share the teachings of the
Catholic Church in their family life and home with
children and grandchildren. Our church refers to the
home as the “domestic church” where faith is
transmitted from generation to generation through
prayer, sharing and service.
Our parish is part of the Catholic Church in some very

laridad de Misión es una parte muy importante
de cualquier organización. Un sistema de
supervisión contribuye a la eficacia de la misión. Los
socios a cada nivel promueven la misión
determinada. La Iglesia Católica es una organización
promovida por su misión. La supervisión en la Iglesia
Católica está provista de muchos niveles a fin de
preservar la unidad esencial que Cristo le ha confiado a
la Iglesia. Los “asociados” en la Iglesia Católica se
extienden desde Su Santidad, el Papa, como el
principal de entre los obispos, seguido por los fieles
unidos en las parroquias a través del mundo. Algunos
se ordenan para el servicio; algunos han hecho la
profesión religiosa como miembros de la vida
consagrada; otros, como también los dos ya
mencionados, son parte de los bautizados: mujeres,
hombres, jóvenes y mayores, casados y solteros, niños
y niñas, todos somos llamado a la vida de
santidad como el Pueblo Santo de Dios que vive en
medio del mundo con todas sus preocupaciones.
Cada vez que tengo la oportunidad de viajar, sea
nacional o internacionalmente, me gusta observar
cómo se hacen las cosas en una cultura u organización
en particular. Es muy educativo aprender como las
mismas metas se logran por métodos diferentes. La
Iglesia Católica se esfuerza por llevar al pueblo a Dios
por medio de Jesucristo. Esta evangelización es
dirigida por los profesores, magisterio de la iglesia.
Este cuerpo docente es el colegio de obispos. Es muy
importante que notemos que los teólogos y exegetas
apoyan el desarrollo continuo de la doctrina. Los
predicadores y catequistas ayudan a integrar las
enseñanzas de la Iglesia en la vida del Santo Pueblo de
Dios. Los padres, habiendo sido lo suficientemente
catequizados cuando niños, y al continuar su propia
formación como adultos, comparten las enseñanzas de
la Iglesia Católica en su hogar y vida familiar con sus
hijos y nietos. La Iglesia se refiere al hogar como la
“iglesia doméstica” donde la fe es transmitida de

obvious ways, especially when we come together for
the celebration of The Eucharist. We participate in the
mission of the Catholic Church by generously
responding to God’s call to service. We value our rich
heritage that has emerged in our community through
the years. However, we also recognize that the church
is not static; but rather synergistic and alive.
Therefore, our priorities must evolve as our
community evolves. Our resources must be allocated
not according to nostalgia but building on the
foundation of the past with an eye toward advancing
the mission entrusted to us: To Bring People To God
Through Christ Jesus! Clergy and Laity together make
this priority a reality.
Stewardship of Time & Talent is manifested in those
who share themselves in support of the mission. Our
parish has hundreds and hundreds of volunteers who
support the mission of the church in: Liturgical
Ministries; Catechetical Ministries; Social Concerns,
Outreach & Evangelization Ministries; Community
Building Ministries; and, Temporal Administration
Ministries, especially in our parish office each and
every day. Without the hundreds and hundreds of
committed parishioners, our commitment to advance
the mission of the church would be significantly
weakened. As I travel to various parishes in and out of
our own diocese, I am amazed at how very different
our community is when it comes to the spirit of
stewardship as a faith response. This is different than
completing a task. Service as a response to God for the
blessings we receive in our lives is something that is
very personal for each individual. It is a reflection of
how we understand ourselves in relationship to what

viva y llena de energía. Por lo tanto, nuestras
prioridades deben crecer y al mismo tiempo nuestra
comunidad debe evolucionar.
Nuestros recursos
deben de ser asignados no de acuerdo a la nostalgia,
sino construyendo sobre los cimientos del pasado con
la mirada hacia el avance de la misión que se nos ha
confiado; ¡Traerle al pueblo a Dios por medio de
Jesucristo! Clérigos y laicos juntos hacen que esta
prioridad sea realidad.
La Corresponsabilidad de Tiempo y Talento se
manifiesta en aquellos que comparten de sí mismos
para apoyar a la misión. Nuestra parroquia tiene
cientos de voluntarios que apoyan a la misión de la
Iglesia a través de los siguientes ministerios: el
Ministerio Litúrgico, el Ministerio de Catequesis,
Inquietudes Sociales, el Ministerio de Evangelización,
el Ministerio de Fomento de Comunidad y el
Ministerio de Administración Temporal, nos apoyan
especialmente en la oficina parroquial día tras día. Sin
estos cientos y cientos de feligreses comprometidos,
nuestro compromiso de avanzar la misión de la Iglesia

the needs might be in our parish community. Each of
us has been endowed with different gifts and talents.
The mature catholic Christian is able to discern those
gifts and place them at the service of advancing the
mission of the church in our parish.
Thank you for your generous spirit of sharing: Time,
Talent & Treasure. The path of Stewardship is never
easy; it requires personal sacrifice for the good of the
whole. Your witness continues to welcome and inspire
others. Take some time to read through the following
pages. This is information that is presented to you so
that our parish might be as transparent as possible in
what we are about and how we are being church
together in communion with His Excellency, The Most
Reverend Bishop of Trenton and Our Holy Father, the
First among all the Bishops of the World. May God
continue to bless you and your family. I pray that
through the intercession of Mary, under her title of
Our Lady of the Angels, we might continue to advance
the mission of the Catholic Church this coming year.

OLA since it was founded 1 July 2005.

diócesis, quedo asombrado al ver lo diferente que es
nuestra comunidad en lo que es ese espíritu de
corresponsabilidad como una respuesta de fe. Esto es
diferente a simplemente cumplir una tarea. El servicio
como una respuesta a Dios por las bendiciones que
recibimos en nuestras vidas es algo que es muy
personal para cada individuo. Es un reflejo propio de
cómo nos entendemos en la relación a las necesidades
que puedan ver en nuestra comunidad parroquial.
Cada uno de nosotros hemos recibido diferentes dones
y talentos. El cristiano católico maduro es capaz de
discernir aquellos dones y ubicarlos en el servicio de
avanzar la misión de la iglesia en nuestra parroquia.
Gracias por ese espíritu generoso de compartir:
Tiempo, Talento y Tesoro.
El camino de
corresponsabilidad nunca es fácil, requiere de
sacrificio personal para el bien del todo. Su testimonio
continúa dando la bienvenida e inspira a otros.
Tómese el tiempo para leer las siguientes páginas. Esta
información se les presenta a ustedes de modo que la
parroquia pueda ser lo más transparente posible en lo
que estamos y en cómo somos la iglesia en comunión
con Su Excelencia el Reverendísimo Obispo de Trenton
y con nuestro Santo Padre, el Primero de entre todos
los Obispos del mundo. Que Dios lo bendiga a usted y
su familia. Le pido a Dios que por la intercesión de

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PAROCHIAL VICAR
MENSAJE DE NUESTRO VICARIO PARROQUIAL

M
y experience in the parish community of Our
Lady of the Angels has been very enriching, both
as a person and as a priest. I have just completed my
first year in this parish and I remember my early days
and the desire to discover and learn all the aspects of
what was to be my new life in this parish community:
the community, the activities, worship, and customs
that represented this new model of parish life.
Although a single Church, every community has its
own characteristics and peculiarities that differ from
each other, and this is a vibrant community, tinged
with colors of three cultures (American, Italian and
Spanish), in a liturgical richness and a colorful
spectrum of personalities and characters that make
this an experience well worth living.
In retrospect, my early stages in this community, as I
worked to build my ministry here, I found a great
school: from its Pastor, a staff that works hard, to a
large number of lay volunteers and parishioners who
make it possible to evangelize and provide service to
the people of God. Indeed, they made it easy to
integrate quickly and become part of the team, who
with their dedication and efforts to get out the
welcome mat and strive to meet the parish goals, are
truly human instruments in the service of God.
To become a part of our program of Faith Formation,
to succor the learning of the children along with their
parents on this journey of Christian formation, they
achieved the dream of reaching the sacraments of
Penance, Communion and Eucharist, even couples that
opened their hearts to a “yes” for the Sacrament of
Marriage, were all enriched with the blessings from
heaven through the sacramental life of our Church.
There was the opportunity for me to meet with the
community and on a more personal level with the
individual families on the path to receive the
sacraments, through talks or interviews where we
shared: common concerns and aspirations in regard to
the formation of our boys and girls, our youth and
adolescents; a commitment to the family and to the
parish to remain a permanent stimulus of faith; and an
example for future generations, making the family the

a sido muy enriquecedora mi experiencia como
persona, y como sacerdote, mi estadía en medio de
esta comunidad parroquial de nuestra Señora de los
Ángeles. Luego de haber cumplido mi primer año en
esta parroquia, recuerdo mis primeros días y el deseo
por conocer, descubrir y aprender todos los aspectos
propios de lo que iba a ser mi nueva vida, en esta
porción de Iglesia particular.
La Comunidad en general, las actividades, la liturgia, las
maneras y formas que me estaba presentando este
nuevo modelo de vida parroquial, porque aunque es una
sola Iglesia, cada comunidad tiene sus características y
particularidades que las diferencia la una de la otras, y
esta, como decimos en nuestra oración parroquial, es
una vibrante comunidad, matizada por los colores de
tres culturas (Americana, Italiana y la hispana
parlante), en una riqueza litúrgica y en un colorido
espectro de personalidades y personajes que hace de
esta una experiencia que bien vale la pena ser vivida.
Haciendo una mirada retrospectiva a mis inicios en esta
comunidad y estando ya firme en función de mi
apostolado encontré aquí una gran escuela; desde su
Párroco, junto a todo el personal que aquí labora y que
hace posible junto con el gran número de voluntarios
laicos y feligreses el día a día de esta misión de
evangelización y servicio al pueblo de Dios, y en verdad
es fácil integrase rápidamente y hacer parte del equipo
que con verdadera dedicación y esfuerzo se esmera en
conseguir todas las metas trazadas y hacer de esta
actividad, un instrumento humano puesto al servicio de
Dios.
El empezar a hacer parte del programa de formación en
la fe, el colaborar a niños y niñas que junto a sus padres,
y en este camino de formación cristiana, pudieron
alcanzar el sueño de llegar a los sacramentos de la
Penitencia, Comunión y Eucaristía y hasta incluso
algunas parejas que se abrieron al sí del Sacramento del
Matrimonio, recibiendo en abundancia todos las
bendiciones del cielo a través de la vida sacramental de
nuestra Iglesia.
La oportunidad de mi encuentro comunitario y
personal, familia a familia, en camino de recibir los
sacramentos, por medio de las charlas o entrevistas en
donde compartíamos las preocupaciones y los anhelos

embrace the life of faith.
It is really gratifying to see parishioners, individuals,
couples, and families, who come every Sunday to
receive God and his Eucharist as families or couples.
They have chosen paths for their lives that lead to the
possibility of living the full communion of the Church.
People are open to receive not only Matrimony, but
also the sacraments of Penance and Holy Eucharist,
which they had been denied by opting for a civil
marriage or a common law marriage.
In my priesthood, I try to integrate the liturgical life
with my own experience and faith. My personality and
my own experience of faith becomes part of each
celebration of the Eucharist, especially the Exposition
of the Blessed Sacrament, every third Thursday of the
month, in the evenings after the 7PM mass. I enjoy
sharing and preaching at the Christian Family
Movement retreats. I have been blessed with the gift
of sharing many experiences with people, both
spiritual and human, both in happy times and painful
ones. When I came here, it was nice to find people
who, despite my imperfect English, were friendly and
patient with me, especially during the English
celebrations. Even other Spanish cultures had to deal
with a new priest, and found different ways to express
themselves and communicate. Though speaking the
same Spanish, some words or expressions translate
differently, and can confuse or even offend people
from different places. Wow, it has really been a
challenge, but again, this an experience well worth
living!

y niñas, de nuestros jóvenes y adolescentes y el
compromiso familiar y parroquial, por seguir siendo un
estímulo permanente de fe y un ejemplo a seguir para
nuestras presentes y futuras generaciones, haciendo de
la familia, la verdadera Iglesia domestica, en donde se
aprendan, compartan y valore lo concerniente a la vida
de la fe.
Es de veras grato distinguir a estos feligreses que
acuden dominicalmente al encuentro con Dios y con su
Eucaristía en familia, parejas que de cara al futuro ya
están decididas y están en el camino de asegurar en sus
vidas la posibilidad de vivir a plenitud la comunión de la
Iglesia, el poder recibir no solo el Matrimonio, como
también los sacramentos de la Confesión y la
Comunión, que ellos mismos se habían negado, al optar
por una simple unión civil o por una unión libre.
El integrarme a la vida litúrgica y colaborar desde mi
propia experiencia de fe en la Predicación y en el libre
ejercicio de mi sacerdocio, desde mi personalidad,
desde mi propia experiencia de fe en cada celebración
eucarística, en la Exposición del Santísimo de cada
tercer jueves del mes, después de la Misa de las siete de
la noche, colaborando en la predicación de los retiros
del Movimiento Familiar Cristiano, compartiendo en
muchas oportunidades en lo espiritual y en lo humano
momentos alegres y dolorosos del camino de la vida,
encontrar personas que a pesar de la dificultad del
idioma y de mi imperfecto inglés, han sido acogedoras
y pacientes conmigo, especialmente en las celebraciones
en Ingles e incluso otras culturas hispanas, qué tuvieron
que encontrarse con las características propias, no solo
de un nuevo sacerdote, como también de una manera
diferente de expresarse y de comunicarse, no obstante
hablando el mismo Español; algunas palabras o
expresiones que me ha tocado corregir o no volver a

Moving forward, I will continue to give my best, and
with God's help this mission will continue as He and
the Bishop have instructed me. I will continue to
encourage and strengthen the community that has
been commissioned me by doing everything possible to
support and work on what lies ahead: The project of
the New Bilingual celebration on Sunday, it is a
Challenge, a Gift and a Task. It is an experiment that
may work or maybe not! It is a gift, because it is a new
possibility that God gives us to grow and support our
children and youth growing up in American culture
through this experience can further develop their
bilingualism, without forgetting their roots and
without the disconnect of the language spoken at
school and the language used in the family home and
at church. Task, in that it will be hard work for
everyone, not just the person presiding at the Holy
Eucharist, as also of those who accompany the liturgy,
the singing, the altar servers and all that in one way or
another, make a great team to serve God and
community.
Make the most of this achievement made by the
tenacity of our Pastor and the support of the
community: New construction designed and made
exclusively for our service and comfort as parishioners
that we will soon begin to enjoy its advantages and
benefits.
I will continue to be a part of the spiritual life of our
people, bless their homes and lives from the gift that
every priest comes and brings to the community
because we never forget that the priest is above all a
servant of God, and wants to try and help others to
attain holiness, to fulfill the will of God and live
according to His Word.
Today I want to say thanks for the witness of faith in
your lives, thank you for the affection received over
these thirteen months. Sorry if I offended anyone. And
say, you can count on me for whatever you might need.
We will continue on this road, you and me, writing day
by day the history of the Church, in the particular the
history of Our Lady of the Angels, which She and the
Son in Her arms, continue to bless you abundantly.

Colombian Priest ordained 18 years ago, with degrees in
Philosophy and Religious Science from the Catholic
University of the East in Colombia, moved to New Jersey 5
years ago. He is also the Cursillo of Christianity Spiritual
Director for the past 5 years.

proveniente de lugares diversos, que utilizan otras
formas de expresarse u otras palabras, que para algunos
pueden resultar ofensivas, de veras un reto, pero que
repito, ¡vale la pena ser vivido!
Ahora de cara al futuro, seguir dando lo mejor de mí,
con la ayuda de Dios continuar en esta Misión que Dios
y el Obispo me ha encargado, seguir animando y
fortaleciendo a la Comunidad
que me ha sido
encargada, hacer todo lo posible por apoyar y trabajar
en lo que se nos avecina, el proyecto de la Nueva
celebración Bilingüe de los Domingos, un Reto, un
Regalo y una Tarea. Reto, por ser una experiencia
nueva, que nos resulte o no, regalo, porque es una
nueva posibilidad que Dios nos brinda de crecer y
apoyar a nuestros niños y jóvenes que crecen en medio
de esta cultura Anglo parlante y que pueden seguir
desarrollando su bilingüismo, sin olvidar sus raíces y
sin que esto los desconecte de la realidad del lenguaje
que hablan en la escuela, y el lenguaje que se utiliza en
la casa materna y en la Iglesia. Tarea, en cuanto a que
será una ardua labor de todos, no solo del que preside la
Santa Eucaristía, como también de los que acompañan
en la liturgia, en los cantos, los servidores del altar y
todos los que de una u otra manera, hacemos un gran
equipo al servicio de Dios y de la comunidad.
Aprovechar al máximo un nuevo logro, conseguido por
la tenacidad de nuestro Pastor y el apoyo de la
comunidad: la nueva construcción, pensada y hecha
exclusivamente para nuestro servicio y comodidad
como parroquianos, pronto, ya casi empezaremos a
disfrutar de sus bondades y beneficios.
Continuar acompañando la
vida de fe nuestra
feligresía, bendiciendo sus hogares y vidas desde el
regalo que cada sacerdote trae y aporta a la comunidad,
porque nunca olvidemos que el sacerdote es ante todo
un servidor de Dios, que intenta y quiere auto
santificarse y ayudar a los demás a alcanzar la santidad,
a cumplir la voluntad de Dios y a vivir conforme a su
Palabra.
Hoy quiero decir Gracias por el testimonio de fe de sus
vidas, gracias por el cariño recibido a lo largo de estos
trece meses, perdón si he ofendido a alguien y decir:
cuenten conmigo, seguiremos en el camino, ustedes y yo
escribiendo en el día a día de la Historia de la Iglesia, en
la historia particular de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles,
que Ella y el Hijo que lleva en sus brazos, siga
bendiciéndoles abundantemente.

unday Stewardship has modestly increased this
year thanks to the generosity of the parishioners.
We as parishioners have to review our giving so we can
maintain a vibrant parish.

este año gracias a la generosidad de nuestros
feligreses. Como feligreses debemos examinar nuestra
ofrenda para poder mantener una parroquia vibrante.
Forward in Faith Capital Campaign pledges continue
to be made, with a redemption rate above average;
there continue to be pledges and gifts made as the
progress continues. We are hoping that parishioners
who have not contributed to the projects look at the
progress and the benefits to our parish and rethink
their giving commitment.
Las contribuciones y promesas a nuestra Campaña de
Capital, Avanzando con Fe, se siguen haciendo con una
tasa de repago por encima del promedio y continua
habiendo donaciones al continuarse la construcción.
Esperamos que los feligreses que aún no han
contribuido a nuestros proyectos puedan ver el
progreso y las ventajas para con nuestra parroquia y
puedan comprometerse también.
Rental Income: we have benefitted from our parish
financial advisors; rental income can only be used for
capital projects (along with parishioner’s stewardship)
and parish debt reduction; this past Spring 2012 our
tenant lost their charter and were ordered to close;
while this decision had been unfortunate, the
subsequent choices of our tenant were grave, that is,
our tenant randomly chose to default on May and June
2012 rental payments; this created financial
uncertainty for our parish community; however,
because of our solid financial vision we have been able
to squeak by during this time of uncertainty because of
how these monies are allocated in our annual budget.
We are hopeful that the buildings can be marketed and
again find new tenants for the buildings in the future.
Growth: We continue to experience growth as the
population continues to shift in our immediate
neighborhood; we have been consulting parish
leadership groups on ways to best address this growth,
and the needs of the new parishioners, more
information will be forthcoming.

Ingreso por Alquiler: hemos seguido las indicaciones
de nuestros consejeros financieros; los ingresos por
alquiler sólo pueden ser utilizados para proyectos
capitales (junto a la colecta semanal) y la reducción de
deudas parroquiales; en la primavera de 2012 los
inquilinos perdieron su estatuto y la ciudad les ordenó
cerrar la escuela; aunque esta decisión fue
desafortunada, más grave fue la decisión que tomaron
los inquilinos, es decir, nuestros inquilinos decidieron
no hacer los pagos de alquiler de mayo y junio de 2012;
esto creó una incertidumbre financiera para nuestra
comunidad parroquial; sin embargo, debido a nuestra
sólida visión financiera, hemos sido capaces de
sobrevivir durante este tiempo de incertidumbre por la
manera en que hemos asignado nuestro presupuesto
anual. Esperamos que los edificios se puedan rentar
pronto y que una vez más encontremos nuevos
inquilinos para el futuro.

UN MENSAJE DE NUESTRA FIDEICOMISARIA

W
hen Our Lady of The Angels Parish was formed
in 2005 I was asked what my thoughts on the
merger were. My answer was “God has a Plan”. We can
see today what a plan he had! There were those who
didn’t believe it would work but they have been proven
wrong.
Our parish is growing steadily every year. Our
attendance at Mass is increasing so much that an
additional Mass on Sunday is being considered. We
have a very diverse community but as we are growing
we are enjoying the special gifts that each person is
bringing to our worship. We are enjoying the
multicultural additions to our services. There have
been positive comments made that the addition of the
guitar and the Spanish music add so much to our
worship.
The worship aids that we have are a great help in
attending Mass and understanding what is being said
no matter what Mass we attend. The designing,
printing and assembling of the booklets was a huge
undertaking. But thanks to the many volunteers we
have the booklets were completed and brought to the
worship sites.
I have the privilege of teaching Religious Education in
our parish. When I started the number of children
enrolled was low. However, each year the number of
children enrolled has been greatly increasing. The
children are the future of our parish and they are
becoming more involved in our parish family. They are
altar servers, sing in the choirs, quietly in the
background helping to keep the churches clean, or
helping in the office. Another sign of the involvement
of our children is the increasing number of children
who attend the summer Bible Camp or the Choir
Camp.
In addition to the time we spend together in worship
we also enjoy spending time together in the social
aspects of our parish. We all enjoy the socials after the
special liturgical celebrations during the year. We are
starting to outgrow Centennial hall, can’t wait till the
construction is completed so we can branch out. As our
parish is growing so is attendance at the annual picnic

uando la Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los
Ángeles fue formada en el año 2005, en algún
momento me preguntaron “¿Qué piensas al respecto
de la fusión?” Yo respondí: Dios tiene un plan. Hoy
podemos ver cuál era su plan, algunos no creían que
esto fuera a funcionar, pero hoy pueden constatar que
estaban equivocados.
Nuestra parroquia está creciendo contantemente cada
año, tanto que hemos llegado a considerar la
posibilidad de agregar otra misa los domingos y de
igual manera como vamos creciendo podemos
disfrutar de cada aporte que cada persona y que cada
cultura trae a esta comunidad haciendo que nuestra
liturgia sea cada vez más rica, cosa que se puede
apreciar a través de la música, donde se ha añadido la
guitarra y los cantos en Español , que han resultado un
aporte positivo, y que la gente en general ha recibido
con mucho agrado.
Los folletos en nuestra liturgia han sido de mucha
ayuda para todos los que se acercan a la celebración de
la misa, no importando el idioma, siempre tendremos
la oportunidad de entender lo que estamos celebrando.
Los folletos de la misa, el diseño y la elaboración como
tal, han sido en verdad una gran tarea, pero gracias al
apoyo de muchos voluntarios se han podido hacer una
realidad.
Yo tengo el privilegio de enseñar catequesis en nuestra
Parroquia y cuando comenzamos el número de
asistentes era poco, pero con el transcurrir del tiempo
el número aumenta cada año más. Estos niños son el
futuro de la Parroquia y cada vez se van
comprometiendo más con esta realidad de familia
parroquial. Niños que se han convertido en
monaguillos en nuestras misas, cantan en el coro de
niños en nuestras celebraciones eucarísticas, de
manera silenciosa algunos colaborando a mantener
nuestras iglesias limpias y colaborando también en las
oficinas. Otro signo es el aumento de la inscripción y
participación de estos mismo niños en los
campamentos de Biblia y Coro.
Aparte de que compartimos el tiempo en nuestras
celebraciones litúrgicas también tenemos momentos
de integración social, después de las solemnidades y

As you can see the construction is moving along at the
St. Joachim site. When the elevator is in place it will be
much easier for people to get to the hall to enjoy each
other’s company and parents take their children to the
second floor for classes. The friary has been taken
down at the Immaculate Conception site and the
fences are down giving the area a totally different look.
The boilers are in place at the elementary school
building and in the church at the Immaculate
Conception Campus. The first part of the window
restoration of the tower windows at Immaculate
Conception Church has been completed; the stained
glass will follow soon. We are slowing making great
strides.
All the wonderful things that are happening in our
parish would not happen if we did not have the
leadership of our Pastor Fr. Jeffrey Lee, our Parochial
Vicar Fr. Alcides Castro-Lopez, our wonderful office
staff and the many, many volunteers who give of their
time and talent. Together with the parish we are
building a wonderful family of God.
I would like to take this time to thank Lisa Bronski for
her time and dedication as trustee when the merger
took place. I’m sure there were many growing pains
and some very stressful moments. Although Carlos
Orsini is not with us he was also very dedicated. I’m
sure he’s looking down and saying keep up the good
work.
As I stated in the beginning God Has a Plan, together
in faith we can all be a part of that great plan and
continue to grow as a family of God and a good role
model for our children.

fiestas especiales durante el año, de tal manera que el
Centennial Hall nos ha quedado pequeño, no puedo
esperar el día en que la nueva adición esté terminada
para acomodarnos mejor. Así como ha crecido nuestra
comunidad, también el número de las personas que
participan de nuestro picnic anual, donde celebramos
la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles en donde
todos pasamos un rato de veras divertido.
Como hemos podido ver en San Joaquín, la
construcción está marchando a toda prisa y cuando
terminemos el ascensor será mucho más fácil el poder
participar de las actividades en el Centennial Hall y los
padres de familia pueden tener fácil acceso con sus
niños a los salones de clases. El antiguo monasterio
que estaba ubicado en La Inmaculada Concepción ha
sido demolido, y las rejas que rodeaban la propiedad
han sido eliminadas, aportando una imagen diferente
del lugar, las calderas de la calefacción han sido
ubicadas en el edificio de la escuela primaria, la
primera parte de la reconstrucción de las ventanas ha
sido terminado, las ubicadas en la parte de las torres
de la Inmaculada Concepción, continuáremos pronto
con la recuperación de los vitrales, estamos trabajando
lento pero a paso seguro.
Todas las cosas maravillosas que están pasando en
nuestra parroquia, no podrían ser una realidad sin el
liderazgo de nuestro Pastor el Padre Jeff Lee, de su
Vicario el Padre Alcides Castro y sin todo el personal,
los voluntario s y toda la gente que dando desde sus
talentos, y sacrificando su tiempo, están haciendo
posible la construcción de esta gran comunidad y de
esta maravillosa familia de Dios.
Quisiera tomar un momento para agradecer a Lisa
Bronski como fideicomisaria, cuando la unión de las
parroquias apenas empezaba. Con seguridad debió
haber pasado por muchas penurias y momentos
difíciles, de igual manera, Carlos Orsini, que aunque
no está más con nosotros, estoy segura que desde allá
arriba está mirándonos y diciéndonos continúen
adelante con esta buena labor.
Como dije en el principio… Dios tiene un plan, juntos
en fe podemos ser parte de ese grandioso plan y
continuar creciendo como Familia de Dios y ser el
mejor modelo para a seguir para nuestros hijos.

RESOLUTIONS SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR

NUESTROS PROPÓSITOS DE COMIENZO DE AÑO

M
any of us began this year 2012 making good
resolutions or setting a few objectives to
accomplish throughout the year. As we move forward
into the second half of the present year, it would be
good to go over all those resolutions and realize how
much we have achieved, if we are on the right path or if
we need to move faster in the coming months to
accomplish all we have set out to do. We do not want
them to become just good intentions, or to have them
once again as goals for the upcoming year, but to begin
the New Year with the satisfaction of having achieved
what we ourselves proposed and to set newer goals.
Let us then review those aspects of our lives which
refer to our faith and to live out our Christian Catholic
values. We are leaving aside any material goals we
could have set –for instance, a new car, a better salary,
a luxurious vacation, etc. – to focus only on those
resolutions which help us become better persons and
better Christians.
Get closer to God. The success of any other good
resolution depends in great part on our closeness to
God, for as the Gospel teaches, without Christ we
cannot do anything. Have you increased the time you
spend in prayer? Are you participating in the
sacraments more actively and consciously? Have you
invited God to be part of your daily living, for instance,
blessing your meals? Do you read the Bible frequently
and hear the message that God is giving you?
Enjoy the life God has given us. It is a bad
practice to complain about everything and to find a
“but” or a bad side to all things. Sometimes we forget
to accept with joy what God has given us, to thank Him
and praise Him for his goodness. Are you able to see
the hand of God in all you have and to realize that
there are many who lack those things? Do you give
thanks to God for each dawn, for the freshness of the
water while you shower or for the energizing breakfast
you eat? Do you complain about “wasting your time”
with your children or grandchildren, or on the
contrary, you enjoy it acknowledging that family is one
of the greatest blessings God has given you? Are you
able to enjoy even the periods of illness, since it offers

haciendo propósitos o estableciendo ciertos
objetivos a cumplir en el año. Al estar avanzando ya la
segunda mitad de este año, sería bueno pasar una
revisión de todos estos buenos propósitos para darnos
cuenta qué tanto los estamos cumpliendo, si estamos
por buen camino o si hemos de apurar el paso en los
últimos meses del año para lograrlo, de manera que no
sean solo buenas intenciones, ni se conviertan otra vez
en proyectos al iniciar el 2013, sino que empecemos el
nuevo año con la satisfacción de haber alcanzado lo
que nos propusimos y establezcamos nuevas metas
para el año nuevo que comenzaremos.
Revisemos entonces lo que se refiere a nuestra fe y la
práctica de nuestros valores cristiano-católicos.
Dejaremos de lado aquellos propósitos materiales que
podamos habernos planteado (por ejemplo, un nuevo
auto, un mejor sueldo, unas vacaciones de lujo, etc.)
para centrarnos en aquellos propósitos que nos ayudan
a ser mejor personas y mejores cristianos.
Acercarnos más a Dios. El éxito de cualquier otro
propósito depende mucho de nuestra cercanía a Dios,
pues como reza el Evangelio, sin Cristo nada podemos
hacer. ¿Has aumentado el tiempo que dedicas a la
oración? ¿Estás participando de manera más
consciente y activa de los sacramentos? ¿Has
incorporado más a Dios en tu vida cotidiana, por
ejemplo bendiciendo tus alimentos? ¿Lees con
frecuencia la Biblia y escuchas el mensaje que Dios
tiene para ti?
Disfrutar más la vida que Dios nos da. Es una
muy mala costumbre quejarnos de todo y encontrarle
peros o un lado malo a todo. A veces olvidamos aceptar
con gozo lo que Dios nos da, agradecerle y alabarlo por
su bondad. ¿Eres capaz de ver la mano de Dios en todo
lo que tienes y notar a cuántos más les hace falta?
¿Agradeces a Dios por cada amanecer, por la frescura
del agua al ducharte o por el desayuno que tomas? ¿Te
quejas de “perder el tiempo” con tus hijos o nietos o
por el contrario lo disfrutas, reconociendo a tu familia
como una de las más grandes bendiciones que Dios te
ha dado? ¿Eres capaz de disfrutar hasta de tus

Do you listen to your brother or sister who wants to
unburden themselves of their troubles? Do you give
good advice to the one who asks you, avoiding
harboring a grudge or envy? Do you make an effort to
perform works of mercy?

Stop the gossip and noticing the splinter in
another’s eye. It is also a very bad custom to get
involved in criticizing someone else, and it is even
worse to gossip against someone invoking a false
divine justice. We believe to be judges when we gossip
because that one sins a lot, that other one spends too
much money, another one is a gossiper, another one is
a hypocrite that has the nerve to come to mass, or
another one attends mass and falls asleep. Do you
gossip against your neighbor or do you try to look
inside yourself each time someone makes or does
something that looks bad to your eyes? Do you realize
that often times what you dislike about others is
something that you also do? Do you fall into the
temptation of gossiping or do you close your mouth to
reflect on the attitudes you have to change?

Stop feeling offended by everything and
fighting against all. One of the beatitudes says
“blessed the lowly; they shall inherit the land.”
Meekness or humility is the virtue that helps us to keep
away from violence and the temptation to get angry
and argue. Are you one that attacks, yells, insults, gets
revenge and retaliates against others? Do you justify
your bad temper by blaming others? Are you one who
goes through life bitter or do you make others lives
miserable? On to contrary, do you avoid fighting and
arguments? Do you truly make an effort to live in
peace with others?

Be a better Christian steward. We have all
received many gifts and talents from God. To be a
good steward means to be a good administrator of
those gifts and return them to God, that is, to put them
to His service, to praise Him in all we do. Do you use
your time productively without skipping the good to
others or mass? Do you put your talents and skills to
the service of your brothers or do you given them
joyfully to your parish community? Are you a volunteer
or a server in the parish and do you perform your

Dios. Ser un buen corresponsable significa ser un buen
administrador de esos dones y devolverlos a Dios, o

These are just a few resolutions to become better
Christians. Do any of the things mentioned sound
familiar? Perhaps we started this year thinking to fix
something like this in our own lives. We still have
time! Let us spend the next months before the end of
the year recollecting those goals we set for this year
and let us make a heartfelt effort to achieve them. If
those were not our goals but we saw ourselves reflected
in something we presented above, we should keep
them in mind as we prepare our list of resolutions for
2013.

THE GIFT OF THE SACRAMENTS
EL DON DE LOS SACRAMENTOS

he greatest gift we receive from God is God
himself and God through His Son Jesus Christ.
The gift of God through Jesus Christ comes through
loud and clear in the life giving sacraments. As you
may have learned sacraments are defined as an
outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace.

mismo y Dios a través de Su Hijo Jesucristo. El
don de Dios a través de Su Hijo nos llega claramente a
través de la vida sacramental. Como seguramente ya
hemos aprendido, los Sacramentos son signos eficaces
instituidos por Jesucristo para darnos su gracia.
The word Sacrament is a Christian term, however, the
custom or practice was ancient. The Jewish people
had sacraments, signs that revealed the saving powers
and presence of God. They performed ritual actions:
blessings, greetings, washings, imposition of hands,
rubbing with oil, bread, wine, meals and sacrificial
offerings to recall the saving acts of God.
La palabra Sacramento es un término cristiano, sin
embargo, la costumbre o práctica es antigua. El pueblo
judío tenía sacramentos, signos reveladores de poder y
de la presencia de Dios. Ellos realizaron actos rituales:
las bendiciones, saludos, lavados, imposición de

You may or may not know there are seven religious
rituals or church ceremonies that Catholics call
sacraments. There are the Sacraments of Initiation,
the Sacraments of Healing and the Sacraments of
Service. Sacraments are special acts that connect
ordinary daily life activities: washing, feeding, healing,
and forgiving with the Sacred. Sacraments are visible
signs of God’s presence in the world. Jesus is the
visible sign of the invisible God. Sacraments have three
dimensions: past for they recall God’s history, present
since they celebrate God’s presence today, and future
in that they look for the fulfillment of God’s plan. We
will discuss each and reflect on how Jesus responded
in His time, and how we respond in our current day.
The Sacraments of Initiation celebrate and introduce
us to the experience of the Christian life. The three
Sacraments of Initiation are Baptism, Confirmation
and Eucharist. Baptism signifies our immersion in the
Christian life and marks our spiritual rebirth in the
Church. In the past, Jesus called people to follow him
and invite them into community and the life of God.
Presently we call people to follow Jesus and invite
them into our community. Confirmation seals our
baptism and confirms our commitment both to the
Church and to the work of Christ in the world. In
Jesus’ time, He communicated his spirit to people and
strengthened them. This still continues today, only we
communicate the spirit of Jesus to the people. We
announce that all can be filled and strengthened by the

spirit of God. Eucharist (means Thanksgiving)
celebrates our life together as a community, the
presence of Christ in our midst, the Word that is
proclaimed and explained, many dimensions of the
paschal mystery of death and rebirth. We celebrate
our unity with Christ in communion and service. In
the past, Jesus ate with sinners and was present to
them. We share Christ’s real presence today under the
signs of bread and wine.
The Sacraments of Healing, Reconciliation and
Anointing of the Sick, celebrate and reveal to us God’s
power to heal us in soul and body. The Sacrament of
Reconciliation celebrates and reminds us of God’s
mercy and helps us to experience divine forgiveness, to
forgive ourselves and to become reconciled with
others.
There are five stages of reconciliation:
acknowledgement of the selfishness of sin, conversion,
confession, acceptance of forgiveness, and celebration.
Jesus called for conversion and forgave those who
were repentant. We are called to conversion, we ask
for forgiveness, and we forgive others. We know that
forgiveness and reconciliation are always possible with
God’s help. Anointing of the Sick celebrates and
reminds us of God’s compassion and helps us to
experience spiritual –and sometimes physicalstrengthening when we are ill. Jesus healed the
suffering in body and soul. We ask for God’s healing
when we are sick and suffering and we hope and work
for the relief of all suffering in the world.
The Sacraments of Service celebrate the Christian
vocation of service and consecrate us to minister
within our own family and within the wider Church

community. The Sacrament of Marriage joins two
people for a lifetime of dedication to each other’s wellbeing and well-being of their children and the
community. Jesus called spouses to unconditional
love and lasting fidelity. We honor and expect
unconditional love and lasting fidelity between
spouses. We believe in and help others to find
happiness in marital love and fidelity. The Sacrament
of Ordination (Holy Orders) integrates men into the
holy orders of bishops, priests and deacons,
empowering them for a lifetime of leadership and
service in the Church. Jesus appointed twelve to
minister in a special way. We ordain certain members
to minister and lead us in the sacraments. We raise up
future ministers by proclaiming that ordained ministry
is a special vocation of Christians.
We cannot update our understanding of sacrament
without looking at our understanding of grace. Most
Catholics today think of grace as “a gift of God.” The
greatest gift that God can give us is the gift of God’s
very self in Christ. Through the sacraments we learn to
understand God’s true love for us and his commitment
to us through the graces he bestows upon us.

católicos pensamos en la gracia como un “regalo de
Dios”. El mayor don que Dios nos pudo dar es el regalo
de El mismo en la persona de Cristo. Por medio de los
sacramentos, nosotros aprendemos a entender el
verdadero amor de Dios y su compromiso con
nosotros, a través de la gracia que nos concede.

he fiscal year July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012, saw
numerous important projects under various stages
of development. Some were brought to fruition. All of
the projects during this time period were essential and
will benefit our parishioners, families, friends, visitors,
etc. for many years to come. Here then is a recap of
what we’ve been working on.
Elevator - Community Center Project
Ground-breaking began in September, 2011 in the
parking lot of the St Joachim campus. The plans called
for the installation of an elevator and handicapaccessible bathrooms to transform Our Lady of the
Angels into an ADA-Compliant facility. The nature
and use of the premises will remain unchanged. The
purpose of this addition is not solely ADA compliance,
but also updating and replacing public utilities and
enhancing the beautification of the premises.
The General Contractor selected for this project was S.
Seltzer Construction Corp. of Kenilworth, NJ for their
experience and proposed cost that best fit our project
budget. As of the beginning of July, 2012, the project
has been erected and framed, floors have been poured,
roofing work begun as well as rough electrical and
ductwork. All lighting, inside and out will be LED
lighting for maximum savings on usage and
maintenance. OLA is hopeful to receive a temporary
certificate of occupancy from the City of Trenton by the
end of the 4th quarter 2012 with final landscaping and
a permanent C/O shortly thereafter.
Having the
ability to gain access to Centennial Hall or up to the
third floor vis-à-vis an elevator is a most welcoming
and anticipated benefit to all. Many photos can be

Two new Weil McLain steam boilers were installed in a
newly built boiler room backstage at the 544 Chestnut

l año fiscal comprendido entre el 1 de Julio del
2011 y el 30 de Junio del 2012, vimos numerosos
e importantes proyectos, que se fueron desarrollando
en diferentes etapas. Algunos de ellos fueron llevados a
buen término. Todos los proyectos que se han ido
realizando, beneficiarán a todos nuestros feligreses, a
nuestras familias, amigos y visitantes, etc., por muchos
años. Por lo tanto le presentamos un resumen de todas
las actividades en las que se ha ido trabajando.
Elevador – Proyecto del Centro Comunitario
En Septiembre del 2011, se colocó la primera piedra en
el estacionamiento de la Iglesia de San Joaquín. La
idea a desarrollar es la instalación de un elevador y
unos baños para personas con discapacidad, para
organizar Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles en un
complejo que cumpla las normas ADA (Ley Americana
para los establecimientos públicos para el acceso de
personas discapacitadas). La naturaleza y el uso de las
instalaciones del templo parroquial se mantienen sin
cambios. El propósito de adicionar este espacio es no
solo para cumplir o facilitar el ADA, sino también para
la renovación y sustitución de los servicios públicos y
el embellecimiento de las instalaciones.
El contratista general seleccionado para desarrollar
este proyecto fue S. Seltzer Construction Corp. de
Kenilworth, New Jersey, elegida por la propuesta
presenta (presupuesto) y por su experiencia en el área.
A comienzos de Julio del 2012, el proyecto ya ha ido
tomando forma, y sea avanzado en la construcción de
los distintos niveles, la realización de los pisos, se
inicio el techado al igual que los conductos eléctricos
de la nueva edificación. Toda la iluminación, tanto
interior como exterior será de iluminación LED para el
máximo ahorro en su mantenimiento y uso. Nuestra
Señora de los Ángeles tiene la esperanza de recibir el
certificado temporal de ocupación por parte de la
ciudad de Trenton a finales del último trimestre del
presente año, con el acondicionamiento definitivo y
permanente Certificado de Ocupabilidad, poco después
de esto. Poder tener la capacidad de acceso al
Avenue school building, formerly used by Emily Fisher
Middle School. These boilers replaced one large Smith
Cast Iron steam boiler. The benefits this project offers
are a greatly reduced PSEG energy bill and improved
control and efficiency of heat distribution throughout
the school building.
Ted’s Plumbing, a local
contractor, was the vendor of choice who completed
this project. The boilers were turned on November,
2011.

calderas están reemplazando un gran juego de calderas
de hierro a vapor marca Smith. Los beneficios que
ofrece este proyecto, es estar de acuerdo a la ley de
energía PSEG, el cual busca mejorar la eficiencia de la
distribución del calor en la escuela y mantener un
reducido costo por el servicio. Tuberías Ted, fue el
contratista local, encargado de llevar a cabo este
proyecto. Las calderas comenzaron a funcionar en
noviembre de 2011.

DGC from Forked River, NJ was selected for this
install as this project had an aggressive timeframe and
required an organization with an adequate manpower
base. The boilers were also turned on late 2011.

In November, 2011 a new ceiling was installed in both
Immaculate Conception Church sacristies as well as

the two hallways. Also installed into the new ceiling
were 44 LED lights by DFW Electric. These lights have
a life expectancy of over 30 years based upon current
usage at ICC. They use 10 watts of electricity and give
off the light equivalent of a 65 watt incandescent bulb.
Although the initial cost of LED’s is higher than other
lighting solutions, the long-term savings benefits far
outweigh the higher upfront expenditure. Our Lady of
the Angels is exclusively utilizing LED’s throughout the
entire St. Joachim Community Center addition.

Immaculate Conception Church Internet
Access

The installation of internet service at Immaculate
Conception Church has been completed. This postures
our parish to perform the following future functions:
Remote security monitoring – video cameras installed
inside and out of Immaculate Conception Church can
be displayed on a monitor in our new office reception
area . They can also be displayed on smart cell phones.
Also is the possibility of monitoring the status of the
boilers and actually control temperatures. Door and
gate locking and unlocking is another capability that
can be remotely controlled, given the right electronic
components.
Friary Demolition
Phase 1 environmental abatement, of the demolition
process of the friary, began in late February, 2012 and
the entire project (demolition to final grading) was
completed in June, 2012. J. Vinch and Sons from
Lawrenceville, NJ was awarded this non-trivial
undertaking. As part of the project, new storm drains
were installed on the footprint of the friary. Also,
sewer lines draining on the friary side were removed
and the church sewer lines were then diverted to the
high school side for improved drainage both now and
when the Division Street parking lot is dug up and regraded. Ted’s Plumbing performed this work.
Faith Formation Center (FFC)

La instalación del servicio de internet en la Iglesia de la
Inmaculada Concepción ha sido terminada. Con el
acceso a internet nuestra parroquia podrá realizar en
un futuro los siguientes proyectos: Monitoreo por
medio de cámaras de seguridad instaladas dentro y por
fuera de la Iglesia, logrando monitorear la nueva área
de recepción de la oficina. Esto también podrá ser
visualizado en teléfonos celulares
inteligentes,
también se tendrá la oportunidad de monitorear es
estado de las calderas y la temperaturas de estas.
Finalmente podrá ser utilizado con la puerta, ya que se
podrá abrir y cerrar a control remoto, utilizando para
esto los componentes electrónicos necesarios.
Demolición del Convento
During May 2012 2 large screen LCD TV’s were
installed in two of our four Faith Formation
Classrooms. These TV’s are mounted high up on the
wall permitting equal viewing from any seat in the
room. Currently, they are being used to primarily
show DVD and (outdated) video tapes. Each room is
wired to accommodate images and video from Cable
TV shows, computers, the internet and even smart
phones.

ICC Tower Windows
Work on the four ICC tower windows actually began in
October, 2007 in the form of inspections, evaluations
and engineering discussions. These analyses spanned
over one year. Due to factors outside the control of our
parish, further extensive delays were encountered and
as many parishioners can attest, plywood boarded up
the four window spaces for what felt like an eternity. It
was during 2012 that the new clear protective windows
were ultimately installed. The final step of installing
the stain glass is expected to be completed in the 4th
quarter 2012. A total of six vendors are involved with
this important project: Glass Artistry of Trenton, our
general contractor, Penn Metal Finishing of
Burlington, NJ, Trulite of Atlanta GA, Edon Corp. of
Horsham, PA, Hiemer & Company of Clifton, NJ, and
S. Seltzer Construction Corp. of Kenilworth, NJ. Each
organization plays a pivotal role in this process and
once completed, the method will be documented and
followed throughout the entire Immaculate Church
building for the remaining windows. As far as we are
aware, no one has undertaken a project of this
magnitude and complexity. These new windows will
not only be beautiful to look at but will also serve as
structural support to the building.

inteligentes.

The two sacristies, hallways and bathrooms and eight
closets at Immaculate Conception Church are planned
to be painted. George Milonas Painting has been
chosen for this work.
Los trabajos en las ventanas de las cuatro torres de la
Iglesia Inmaculada Concepción, realmente comenzó en
octubre del 2007, con las distintas inspecciones,
evaluaciones y discusiones de ingeniería. Todo este
análisis llevo casi todo un año. Debido a distintos
factores ajenos a la parroquia, hemos tenido algunos
retrasos, en especial con la ventana número cuatro, la
cual permaneció cubierta por un buen tiempo con la
madera, lo que tomo bastante tiempo y de lo cual
muchos de nuestros feligreses fueron testigos. Pero fue
en el 2012, cuando se instalaron las nuevas ventanas
de protección en su última fase. Por lo tanto, se espera
que el último paso en la instalación de los vitrales
quede terminado en el último trimestre de 2012. Un
total de seis proveedores están involucrados en este
importante proyecto: Glass Artistry of Trenton, el cual
es el contratista general, Penn Metal Finishing of
Burlington-NJ, Trulite of Atlanta GA, Edon Corp. of
Horsham- PA, Hiemer & Company of Clinton – NJ,
and S. Seltzer Construction Cop. Of Kenilworth –NJ.

Fiscal Year 2012-2013
Here are some of the projects that have been proposed
for the fiscal year 2012-2013.
Immaculate Conception Church Campus Trees
Twelve new trees are planned for Division Street and
Chestnut Avenue as a continued part of our ICC
campus beautification efforts. Holes will be cut in the
sidewalk and the concrete and dirt will be removed for
each tree. Highbridge Landscaping will do this project,
they will saw, cut and remove the concrete and then
plant the trees.

Immaculate Conception Church Garage Repair
and Painting
All five garages at the Immaculate Conception campus
will be repaired and painted. New gutters and PVC
downspouts will be installed by Andrew Zukowski
Construction. Andrew will also stucco the side of
where garage six used to be. George Milonas Painting
will paint the garages.
Immaculate Conception Church Fences
Plans are in the works to install three new fences at
Immaculate. The first will be an eight-foot tall vinylcoated metal fence with 1 ¼” mesh similar to what is
installed along the north edge of the Division Street
lot, where the houses are. This fence will start at the
point where the rear of the garages meets the 544
Chestnut Avenue school building and extend all the
way across the field where the friary used to occupy,
and end up against the side of Immaculate Conception
Church. There will be two pedestrian gates and a
double car gate. This fence will separate the front
grassy area facing Chestnut Avenue from the rear
gravel parking lot area facing Division Street. The
second fence will be the same type and will surround
the air conditioner units and electric transformer
behind the sacristy. It too will have a pedestrian gate.
The third fence (which has not been selected yet) will
be a garden or hedge fence. This fence will be installed

Herdt Fencing in Bordentown has been selected to
install the two eight feet tall fences. We have yet to
select a vendor for the hedge fence.
Immaculate Conception Church
Bathroom Fans and Lights
New light and fan combination units will be installed
in the two ICC bathrooms. ACS Electric has been
selected to perform this work. The lights will turn on
when the church lights are on and the fans will turn on
and off upon someone entering and leaving the
bathroom. Our goal is to have LED lighting.
Immaculate Conception High School
Downspouts
New downspouts will be installed on the north side of
the high school building at Immaculate and will be the
same system as currently installed on the south side
facing the Church. Requests for proposals will go out
shortly. This will improve drainage and minimize the
chances of water freezing in the downspouts.

Discussions are underway to have a new wooden door
custom made to replace the metal ramp door at
Immaculate Conception Church. Also a new door

donde están las casas. Esta valla se iniciará en la parte
trasera de los garajes que están en el colegio ubicado
en la avenida 544 Chestnut logrando ampliar toda el
área del campo que solía ocupar el convento y terminar
a un lado de la Iglesia Inmaculada Concepción. Habrá
dos entradas peatonales y dos entradas para carros.
Esta valla tendrá la función de separar la zona cubierta
de hierba que se encuentra frente a la avenida
Chestnut de la parte trasera de la superficie del lote de
estacionamiento de grava que va hacia la calle
Division. La segunda valla será del mismo tipo que la
anterior, pero esta será de color negro y estará ubicada
alrededor de las unidades de aire acondicionado y de

capable of fulfilling this request.
News Events of Fiscal Year 2011-2012
Emily Fisher Charter School
Emily Fisher Charter School ceased to exist on June
30, 2012 and so did the income to Our Lady of the
Angels from the lease and shared maintenance fees.
This news came as a complete surprise to everyone and
set in motion a series of events to search for and
discover another organization to lease our buildings.
As of this writing, a replacement tenant has yet to be
identified. We are in the process of cleaning and
repairing damage to the three buildings in preparation
for real estate showings. Our hopes are that when the
nearly 400 displaced children are reassigned to either
a public school or alternate charter school, our
buildings will again play a key facilities role.
Solar
Another event occurred that also had a negative impact
on Our Lady of the Angels, as well as many other
parishes in the Diocese of Trenton. This incident was
predicted over eight months ago when I initially met
with Aztec Solar. Aztec Solar, the third solar company
to propose a solar solution to Our Lady of the Angels,
visited us in November, 2011. At that time I asked if
they expected to suffer the same fate as their two
predecessors to which they replied a resounding “NO”.
In Late June, 2012 when they no longer answered their
phones, I researched and confirmed they too had gone
out of business for the exact same reason the others
did -the overdevelopment of solar projects in the state
of New Jersey.
This aggressive NJ solar development phenomenon
caused an oversupply of SREC’s (Solar Renewable
Energy Certificates) the main funding tool that
investors use to justify funding solar projects. The
oversupply of SREC’s caused a precipitous drop in
their market value which greatly reduced investors’
expected ROI (return on investment) causing them to
pull their money out of the pools resulting in the
demise of many solar companies and solar projects. Of
course as fast as they closed their doors, new solar
companies have appeared exuding the same solar
industry excitement and naivety.

en el lado sur frente a la Iglesia. Las solicitudes para
esta propuesta se terminaran pronto. Esto mejorara el
drenaje y reducirá al mínimo las posibilidades de
congelación del agua en los tubos de bajada.
Puertas de la Iglesia Inmaculada Concepción
Se está realizando algunas averiguaciones para tener
una nueva de puerta de madera, la cual reemplazara la

t is amazing when we stop and realize that the
liturgical year is passing by so quickly! It seems like
only a short while ago when we welcomed the New
Translation of the Roman Missal at the beginning of
the season of Advent, 2011, and here we are quickly
approaching then end of another Ordinary Time
season.

año litúrgico, parece que fue ayer cuando apenas
dábamos la bienvenida a la nueva versión del Misal
Romano en el principio del Tiempo del Aviento del año

Many great things have been accomplished in these
past several months. First and foremost, we have
successfully integrated the new translation of the
Roman Missal into the unique and vibrant life of the
Our Lady of the Angels parish community. With the
ongoing development and production of the worship
aid booklets, we as a parish are much better equipped
to welcome newcomers in their own native languages
and to include them more fully in our weekly worship.
In addition, these worship aids also provide a
particularly efficacious way in which traditions from
one culture can be introduced and shared by the whole
community.
Hemos podido conseguir grandes cosas en estos meses
pasados, primero que todo el poder integrar de manera
satisfactoria la nueva versión del Misal Romano dentro
de la única y vibrante vida de nuestra comunidad de la
Señora de los Ángeles. El constante desarrollo y

Furthermore, you’ve probably noticed that we have
embraced a new way of singing our Responsorial
Psalms, utilizing a chant-based structure of the proper
psalm for each liturgical celebration. What we sing at
Mass is the end result of a process that is actually fairly
complex. The chant-based refrain, written in
Gregorian notation in notes called neumes, comes
from the hand of Fr. Columba, a Benedictine Monk at
the Saint Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana. Based on the
chord structure of the refrain, the proper St. Meinrad
Psalm tone (there are eight of them) is chosen for the
verses, which are according to the translation from The
Revised Grail Psalms (©2010 Conception Abbey).

If you’ve recently been to one of the Solemnities that
the OLA Choir was singing at, you probably heard a
new sound coming from the choir loft, a Mass Setting
completely in Latin, called Mass VIII from the Kyriale
(a collection of Gregorian chant settings for the

Si has venido recientemente a una de las Solemnidades
de nuestra parroquia has podido escuchar a nuestro

de Angelis. This mystical-like Mass setting truly helps
to raise our mind and heart along with our voices to
the throne of God during the sacrifice of the Holy
Mass.
Currently, we are working to make the worship aids
more accessible for use during the liturgy of the Mass.
At all Masses during Ordinary Time, there are two
worship aids. The “weekly worship aid” contains the
readings, psalm and Gospel for the week. At Mass, the
cantor will announce, before the Liturgy of the Word,
the page number on which the first reading can be
found. This is necessary since there are multiple weeks
in every weekly worship aid.
Along with the weekly worship aid, there is the
“seasonal worship aid” which contains everything else
beside Liturgy of the Word: The Greeting, Kyrie,
Gloria, all proper prayers, the Creed, the Eucharistic
Prayer, and the Conclusion. The seasonal worship aid
also contains the “music index,” located at the back of
the book. All hymns that the cantor announces can be
found there in the seasonal worship aid.
At Masses during the “strong seasons” of the liturgical
cycle, which are Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter,
all Mass prayers and hymns will be contained in one
comprehensive worship aid. The same is true for all
Sanctorals, which are the annual cycle of Masses based
around the celebration of the feasts of the saints.
Looking back upon this past year, as we are rightly
proud of the progress we have made together working
with the Spirit to enrich the worship experience at Our
Lady of the Angels Parish, let us never forget that each
day brings a new opportunity, a new possibility of
personal and communal growth. May we never stop
seeking to do God’s will as we strive to be the salt of
the earth and the light seen by the nations.

Misa VIII DE EL KYRIALE (o colección de Cantos
Gregorianos para la misa diaria) conocida
ampliamente como Misa de Angelis. Esta música en
verdad eleva nuestras mentes y corazones junto con

plegarias Eucarísticas propias para cada semana, la
oración final después de la comunión, este folleto
especial contiene también, el índice musical localizado
en la parte de atrás del libro, y así todos los cantos que
se anuncian en la misa pueden ser localizados en esta
sección.
Durante los Tiempos fuertes de la Liturgia, como lo
son Adviento, Navidad, Cuaresma, Pascua, los tenemos
en un folleto compacto que contiene los dos auxilios
litúrgicos en un solo tomo y de igual manera todas las

Heritage
Commission, in collaboration with
the City of Trenton, conducted a
program on “Freedom and
Independence’ in the Council
Chambers of the City on July 2,
2012 to honor Giuseppe Garibaldi,
the Hero of the Two Worlds. The
program was held in conjunction
with the Sicilian towns of Villalba
and Geraci Siculo, whose mayors
and other dignitaries visited the city
and used the occasion to forge a
declaration of friendship with
Trenton. During the ceremony, it
became apparent that many
attendees did not know much about
Garibaldi, and this is why I want to
write about this remarkable man
who fought for the freedom of
people on two continents, was
instrumental in the unification of
Italy, had an impact on American
history, and did it all at great
personal risk, without expecting any
personal power or financial gain.

Giuseppe Garibaldi was born in

his family’s tradition of coastal
trade, he became a sea captain in

Battista Cuneo, a member of
Mazzini’s secret society La Giovane
Italia, dedicated to the unification
of Italy as a liberal republic, and
joined the movement. In the same
year, he met Mazzini in Geneva and
became a lifelong admirer. In 1834
he participated in a failed Mazzini
inspired insurrection in Piedmont
and was condemned to death. He
eventually escaped to Brazil, where
Giuseppe Garibaldi nacque a Nizza

of Mazzini, but the French came in
support of the Pope and eventually
defeated the insurgents, causing
Garibaldi to retreat towards Venice,
during which time his wife Anita
died of exhaustion. He managed to
escape to La Spezia, but the
Piedmontese government forced
him to leave and eventually he came
to the United States to buy a ship
that he would command, but the
funds did not materialize. He
settled in Staten Island, employed

Romana formatasi negli Stati
Pontifici ed assunse il comando
delle forze armate su richiesta di
Mazzini, ma i Francesi scesero in
supporto del Papa ed
eventualmente sconfissero i ribelli,
causando la ritirata di Garibaldi
verso Venezia, durante la quale la
moglie Anita mori’ d’esaurimento.
Egli riusci’ a rifugiarsi in La
Spezia, ma il governo piemontese
lo scaccio’ e cosi’ venne negli Stati
Uniti per comprare una nave che
avrebbe comandato, ma i fondi non
furono trovati. Si stabili’ a Staten
Island, impiegato da Antonio
Meucci nella sua fabbrica di
candele. La casa in Staten Island
dove egli abito’ e’ elencata nel
Registro Nazionale di Posti Storici
ed e’ preservata come il Memoriale
di Garibaldi. Ma non soddisfatto
con cio’ riprese l’attivita’ marittima
viaggiando in Sud America, Cina e
Inghilterra. Poi nel 1854 ritorno’ in
Italia dove compro’ meta’ dell’isola
di Caprera con una eredita’ da suo
fratello.

the Garibaldi Memorial. But he was
not satisfied with this and took up
the sea life traveling to South
America, China and England.
Finally in 1854 he returned to Italy
where bought half the island of
Caprera with an inheritance from
his brother..
In 1859 King Victor Emmanuel II,
with the support of the French,
started the Second Italian War of
Independence from the Austrian
Empire. Garibaldi joined the Italian
forces, was appointed Major
General and won battles at Varese
and Como. At the beginning of April
1860, an uprising in Messina and

Palermo in the Kingdom of the Two
Sicilies provided Garibaldi with an
opportunity to wrest Southern Italy
from the Spanish domination. He
gathered about a thousand
volunteers – called i Mille (the
Thousand), or, as popularly known,
the Redshirts in two ships named
Piemonte and Lombardo, and left
from Genoa on 5 May in the
evening and landed at Marsala, on
the westernmost point of Sicily, on
11 May. After an initial victory at
Calatafimi, Garibaldi’s volunteers
were joined by many Sicilians and
by the end of July the Garibaldi
forces were in control of the island.
He then crossed the Strait of
Messina and proceeded towards
Naples, the capital of the Kingdom
of the Two Sicilies, where he
entered triumphantly on September
7. The final defeat by Garibaldi of
the Neapolitan army took place in
the battle of Volturno on September
30 with the assistance of the
Piedmontese army. On October 26,
1860 in a meeting on a bridge at
Teano, Garibaldi turned over all the
conquered lands to the King of
Piedmont, Victor Emmanuel II of
Savoy, effectively uniting Italy for
the first time in modern times, even
though Rome remained under the
control of the Pope. In doing this,
Garibaldi was recognizing the
difficulty of forming a republic,
much to the displeasure of Mazzini.
Rome was finally taken by the
Italian state in 1870, after the
French left it to fight the Franco
Prussian War.
In 1861, at the outbreak of the
American Civil War, Garibaldi
volunteered his services to
President Abraham Lincoln on two
conditions: that he be Commander
in Chief of the US forces and that
slavery be abolished, explaining
that he would be of little use
without the first, and without the
second it would appear like a civil
war in which the world at large
could have little interest or
sympathy. Lincoln refused. On 6
August 1863, after the

Garibaldi was elected to the Italian
Parliament, but remained mostly in
Caprera, where he continued to
agitate for the liberation of other
European countries still under
foreign rule, but took no further
action. He died on 2 June 1882. He
is recognized as one of the most
important heroes of the Unification
of Italy and is honored with many

Returning to the ceremony in the
Trenton City Hall, Dr. William
Connell, historian and chair of the
Italian Department at Seton Hall,
recounted an anecdote about a
Garibaldi volunteer (a garibaldino)
who had stolen some grapes from a
farmer in Villalba, who complained
to the mayor. The mayor went to
Garibaldi, who decreed that the
garibaldino be stripped of his red
shirt and turned over to the local
authorities, upon which the man
killed himself to avoid the dishonor
of being rejected by Garibaldi. The
concluding paragraph from Dr.
Connell’ remarks sums up the life of
Garibaldi:
“In addition to his fine military
skills, Garibaldi had a remarkable
sense of the occasion, a romantic
flair for doing things in a way that
captured other people’s
imaginations, even thousands of
miles away. Garibaldi was not a
destructive but a constructive
revolutionary.
He turned the
abstract idea of human freedom
into something that people were
willing to believe in, that they could
give their hearts and minds to, that
they were willing to die for. Even
the grape-stealing garibaldino in
Villalba preferred to die rather
than give up the red-shirt that
marked him as one of Garibaldi’s
men. The world needs more men
like Giuseppe Garibaldi.”

marcava come uno degli uomini di
Garibaldi. Il mondo ha bisogno di
molti piu’ uomini come Garibaldi.”

Regresando a la ceremonia en el
City Hall de Trenton, el Doctor
William Connell, historiador y
presidente del departamento
italiano de la Universidad de Seton
Hall, les contó una anécdota de un
voluntario de Garibaldi, a quienes
se les llama “garibaldinos”, que
había robado algunas uvas de un
granjero de Villalba y el granjero se
quejó con el alcalde. El alcalde fue a
