Welcome to the 2009 edition of the Semex International Beef
Catalogue. We saw numerous successes around the world this year
with Semex genetics in 2008, dominating globally both in the
show ring and in the sale ring.
Our Fleckvieh Simmental program has increased in popularity
and sired numerous champions around the world including Grand
Champion bulls in Costa Rica, South Africa and Brazil. is is a
direct result of our strict selection criteria, Balanced Breeding
philosophy and extensive lineup. We have vowed to bring this
same selection philosophy to the Simbrah breed, providing wellbalanced genetics that will excel in warm climates.
Semex’s focus for our Red Angus program has been to provide
well-balanced sires that combine feed efficiency, calving ease and
growth. Our program has allowed us to offer a wide range of sires
to the global market that will add value to purebred programs as
well as make ideal crossbreeding options for Bos Indicus and
Taurus breeds alike.
e popularity of our Polled Hereford program continues to
increase as Semex offers some of the breed’s top curve bending
sires. e lineup contains many high profile sires including:
Global, who made his mark in 2008, as his first bull calf was
named National Bull Calf Champion at Canada’s Agribition;
Absolute, a new bull to our program who has proven to be a
premier calving ease sire in the breed; and Next Big ing, a sire
who has proven to provide calving ease and phenotypic strength.
Our Black Angus program had an exciting addition in 2008
when Wall Street became one of the Angus industry’s most talked
about sires, being admired for his ability to provide unparalleled
muscle, thickness and exceptional phenotype. He will be a feature
and on display at the 2009 World Angus Forum in Canada this
summer.
Regardless of your breed of preference, Semex has genetics
that will help improve and advance your program. We have
continued to add new breeds to the Semex program, all selected
under the same strict Balanced Breeding philosophy, to provide
you with the world’s leading genetics. We have focused on selecting
genetics that meet international needs, provide efficient
production to add muscle and thickness to your cattle, maternal

Bienvenidos a la edición 2009 del Catálogo Internacional de
Toros de Razas de Carne de Semex. En el año 2008, tuvimos un
gran éxito en todas partes del mundo con la genética de Semex,
la cual dominó globalmente en las pistas de exposiciones y
remates.
Nuestro programa Fleckvieh Simmental ha aumentado su
popularidad y ha dado muchos campeones alrededor del mundo,
incluyendo Grandes Campeones en Costa Rica, Sudáfrica y
Brasil. Este es el resultado directo de nuestros estrictos criterios
de selección, nuestra filosofía de Balance Total y nuestra extensa

El enfoque de Semex para la raza Angus Rojo ha sido

Selection Criteria
When selecting Fleckvieh sires our philosophy is
based around the concept of optimizing milk
production while maximizing muscle and
performance. We have placed an emphasis on
genetics that are easy-fleshing, structurally sound
and low maintenance, by providing calving ease and
growth. We have also placed emphasis on genetics
that will work in warmer climates by offering
additional pigmentation and shorter hair. They are
selected to be efficient in their production and work
well in a grass-based environment. We have
incorporated the world’s top Fleckvieh genetics
from Canada, South Africa, Germany, the United

Flechvieh Simmental program. The strength of our
genetics is a result of our strict selection criteria where
we look for a balance of maternal strength and
terminal power. Looking toward the future we are
taking steps to provide Simbrah genetics based on the
same philosophy used in the Fleckvieh program, by
selecting genetics that combine maternal strength,
performance, muscle and thickness all in a well

competitors. We focus on marketing genetics that
meet our Balanced Breeding philosophy, rather than

fall under our Balanced Breeding philosophy. These
principles center around the selection of genetics that
balance structure, maternal strength, muscling and
phenotype, while focusing on the individual’s genetic
strengths rather than the cosmetic show appeal. We
have hand selected genetics from around the world
that meet our philosophies, sourcing premium
bloodlines from the United States, Brazil, Argentina,
Paraguay, South Africa and Australia in order to make
them available globally. In the next three years these
genetics will headline the Zebu section of the beef
program, providing the most extensive lineup

La Conversión de alimento, es una proporción entre las libras
consumidas, contra las libras de ganancia obtenidas. Es
posible mejorar esta proporción, mejorando la ganancia, sin

favorables, reducen significativamente la “dureza” de la
carne al ser consumida. El impacto de estos dos genes
en la blandura, ha sido bien documentado desde hace
algún tiempo. Sin embargo, a través del uso de pruebas
de ADN disponibles inicialmente por Bovigen, existe
ahora como una herramienta efectiva y eficiente para usar
este conocimiento cuando se deban tomar decisiones de
cruzamientos y manejo.
La blandura es típicamente evaluada en ambientes de
investigación, a través del uso de la prueba de fuerza de
corte Warner-Bratzler (WBSF-por las siglas en inglés).
La recolección y evaluación de este tipo de información toma
tiempo y es costosa, lo cual hace difícil evaluar este rasgo en
el cruzamiento de animales de corta edad o en gran escala.
Uno de los beneficios más importantes de la tecnología del
ADN, es la habilidad de proporcionar información genética

UNDERSTANDING BEEF EPDs
EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCE (EPD) is the estimate of how future progeny are expected to perform, relative to
the progeny of other sires listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus.
Interim EPDs may appear in cases wherein there is insufficient information to allow the calculation of an EPD through
National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an "I" and is calculated from pedigree
information by the AHIR Department of the Association.
ACCURACY (ACC) is the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher
reliability. Accuracy is determined by the number of progeny and ancestral records included in the analysis.
BIRTH WEIGHT EPD (BW), expressed in lbs, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny
compared to that of other sires.
WEANING WEIGHT DIRECT EPD (WW), expressed in lbs, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit weaning
growth to his progeny compared to other sires.
WEANING WEIGHT MATERNAL EPD (MILK) is a predictor of a sire's genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as
expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of weaning weight
attributed to milk and mothering ability.
YEARLING WEIGHT EPD (YW), expressed in lbs, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit yearling growth to his
progeny compared to that of other sires.
SCROTAL CIRCUMFERENCE EPD (SC), expressed in cm, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for
scrotal size compared to that of other sires.
CARCASS WEIGHT EPD (CW), expressed in lbs, is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire's
progeny at a given end point compared to progeny of other sires.
MARBLING EPD (MARB), expressed as a fraction of the difference in a subjective USDA marbling score of a sire's
progeny at a given end point compared to the progeny of other sires.
RIBEYE AREA EPD (REA), expressed in in2, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire's progeny at a
given end point compared to the progeny of other sires.
FAT THICKNESS EPD (FAT), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th
rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire's progeny at a given end point compared to the progeny of
other sires.
ENTENDIENDO LOS EPDs (DEPs)

PESO AL DESTETE (PD): Es un indicador de la habilidad de un toro para transmitir crecimiento al destete de su
progenie comparado con otros toros.
PESO AL AÑO (PA): La diferencia esperada en el peso expresada en libras y es utilizado como un indicador para
demostrar la habilidad del reproductor para transmitir crecimiento al año a su progenie comparado con otros
toros.
ALTURA AL AÑO (EA): Es un indicador expresado en pulgadas de la habilidad de un toro para transmitir altura
al año comparado con otros toros.
LECHE: Predice el mérito genético para leche y habilidad maternal que un toro puede expresar
con sus hijas.
PESO AL DESTETE MATERNO (MWW): El desempeño esperado de la progenie se expresa en libras y es un
indicador de las hijas de un toro para producir leche y crecimiento al destete de sus becerros atribuidos a la leche
y habilidad materna.
FACILIDAD DE PARTO MATERNO (MCE): Es un indicador de la habilidad de los reproductores para transmitir
facilidad de parto a sus hijas y dar hembras que puedan tener partos no asistidos.
DURABILIDAD (STAY): Es un indicador de la probabilidad de que las hijas del reproductor permanezcan en el
hato por lo menos 6 años.
CIRCUNFERENCIA ESCROTAL (SC): Un indicador expresado en centímetros de la diferencia en la habilidad del
reproductor para transmitir el tamaño del escroto comparado con otros reproductores.
PESO DE CARCASA (CW): Es un indicador expresado en libras de las diferencias en el peso de la carcasa
caliente de la progenie de un toro comparado con la progenie de otros toros.
GRASA INTRAMUSCULAR (IMF): Es un indicador de la diferencia del porcentaje de grasa intramuscular en el
músculo del ojo del lomo de la progenie de un toro comparado con otros reproductores.
ÁREA DEL OJO DEL LOMO (REA): Es un indicador expresado en pulgadas cuadradas del área del lomo de la
progenie de un toro comparado con la progenie de otros toros.
GROSOR DE GRASA (FAT): Es un indicador de la diferencia del grosor de grasa externo entre la costilla 12 y 13
de la progenie de un reproductor comparado con la progenie de otros reproductores.
