California Distinguished School Award Where are we in the process? Dear McKinley Families, As you know, McKinley School was identified as being eligible to apply for the California Distinguished School Award. The California Distinguished Schools Award recognizes schools that have demonstrated educational excellence for all students as well as progress towards narrowing the achievement gap. This is a very prestigious honor for us! The process involves four steps and we have now gone through three of these steps: 1) About 10% of California public schools become eligible based on current California Standards Test (CST) scores. McKinley school was found eligible based on our progress in closing the achievement gap across subgroups. 2) Eligible schools submit an application which consists of a narrative describing two signature practices that the school has identified as leading to the success of students. McKinley’s narratives were reviewed by a team of educators and found to be eligible for a Site Validation visit. 3) A Site Validation Visit was conducted at McKinley on March 10. The Visitation Team included educators who are representatives of the Los Angeles County of Education. During the site visit, the reviewers walked around and observed in different classrooms, conducted interviews and reviewed documents that reflected our professional development work. In preparation for the Site Validation Visit, McKinley teachers reflected on the learning they have experienced as a result of the professional development work we have done over the past several years. Each teacher selected four examples of teacher and student learning to highlight in their classroom. Students in each classroom acted as “tour guides,” discussing their classwork with the reviewers. At the end of the day, the reviewers shared positive feedback with McKinley staff. They talked about multiple examples they had seen of McKinley of staff’s collegiality, collaboration, and in‐depth learning. The spoke of the support and dedication articulated our parent community. Most importantly, they spoke of the engagement and enthusiasm for learning they observed in all of our students. According to the reviewers, wherever they went on campus, students excitedly rushed over to them, eager to share what they had learned. The final step of this process will be a final review of our CST data. Once this step is complete, our school will be notified if we have received this prestigious honor. A final list of all 2010 Californian Distinguished Schools will be published by the California State Department of Education by April 15, 2010. Como ustedes están enterados, la Escuela McKinley fue identificada elegible para aplicar
al Reconocimiento Escuela Distinguida de California. El Reconocimiento Escuela Distinguida de
California reconoce a las escuelas que han demostrado excelencia educacional como también el
progreso hacia el reducir el espacio para el éxito.
¡Este es un honor prestigioso para nosotros! El proceso involucra cuatro pasos y ahora
nosotros hemos pasado a través de tres de esos pasos:
1) Cerca del 10% de las escuelas de California se hacen elegibles basado a las
calificaciones de las Pruebas Estándares de California (CST). La escuela McKinley
fue encontrada elegible basado en nuestro progreso por la reducción del espacio para
el éxito en todos los subgrupos.
2) Las escuelas elegibles entregan una aplicación la cual consiste de un narrativo
describiendo dos prácticas de programas que la escuela ha identificado como el líder
para el éxito de los estudiantes. Los narrativos de McKinley fueron revisados por un
grupo de educadores y fueron encontrados elegibles para la visita Validación de la
Escuela.
3) La Visita de Validación de la Escuela fue conducida en McKinley el 10 de marzo. El
grupo de la Visitación incluyó educadores quienes son representantes del Condado de
Educación de Los Ángeles. Durante la visita a la escuela, los comentaristas
caminaron alrededor y observaron diferentes clases, llevaron a cabo entrevistas y
revisaron documentos que mostraron nuestro desarrollo del trabajo profesional.
Para la preparación para la Visita de Validación de la Escuela, los maestros McKinley
mostraron el aprendizaje que ellos han experimentado como un resultado del trabajo de
capacitación profesional que hemos hecho durante varios años pasados. Cada maestro/a
selecciono cuatro muestras del aprendizaje del maestro y estudiante para resaltarlo en sus salones.
Los estudiantes en cada clase actuaron como “guías de turistas,” hablando del trabajo de su clase
con los comentaristas.
Al final del día, los comentaristas compartieron opiniones positivas con el personal
McKinley. Ellos hablaron sobre las múltiples muestras que ellos habían visto de McKinley,
estrategias del personal, colaboración, y la profundidad de aprendizaje. El hablar del apoyo y
dedicación articulado por nuestra comunidad de los padres. Lo más importante, ellos hablaron
del compromiso y entusiasmo en el aprendizaje que ellos observaron en todos nuestros
estudiantes. De acuerdo a nuestros comentaristas, donde fuera que ellos visitaban durante el
tiempo de visita en la escuela, los estudiantes corrían emocionados a donde ellos estaban, ansioso
de compartir lo que ellos han aprendido.
El paso final de este proceso será una revisión final de nuestros datos CST (calificaciones
de las pruebas). Media vez este paso concluya, nuestra escuela será avisada si nosotros hemos
recibido este prestigioso honor. Una lista final de todas las Escuelas Distinguidas de California
2010 van a ser publicadas para el 15 de abril, 2010 por el Departamento de Educación Estado de

PROPOSAL FOR SUMMER BOOK CLUB INCOMING 4TH AND 5TH GRADES
When the 4th and 5th grade students return from summer vacation, they are expected to
be able to discuss or write about two of the books from our McKinley Summer Reading
Lists. As an experienced Elementary Library Coordinator with years of book club
experience, I am excited about helping our incoming 4th and 5th grade students enjoy
their summer reading.
I would like to start a Summer Book Club this August. I hope to explore some of the
required summer reading through discussion, hands-on activities, book extensions, and
rewards for attendance. Students benefit from group discussion and I plan on using some
of the analytic techniques used by Lucy Calkins such as comparative studies, using notes
to identify character traits, supplying gesture and dramatic illustration and shared inquiry.
Students will be invited to simply sink into a story and experience it and share it on many
levels.
We would like to know how much interest there is in this project.
If you would take a few moments to fill in this sheet and return it to your teacher
or Ms. Lowe, we would appreciate it.

ESTUDIANTES ENTRANDO A 4º. Y 5º. GRADO
Cuando los estudiantes de 4º. y 5º. Grado regresan de las vacaciones de verano, se
espera que ellos puedan discutir o escribir algo de dos libros de Nuestras Listas de la
Lectura de Verano McKinley. Como una experta Coordinadora del Club de Lectura de
Verano con años de experiencia del club de lectura, yo estoy emocionada acerca de
ayudar a nuestros estudiantes que ingresan al 4º y 5º. Grado para que disfruten su lectura
de verano.
Para este agosto me gustaría empezar un Club del Libro para el Verano. Yo
espero explorar alguna de la lectura obligatoria de verano a través de una discusión,
actividades de práctica, extensiones de libros, y reconocimientos por la asistencia. Los
estudiantes se benefician en los grupos de discusión y yo estoy planificando en usar
algunas de las técnicas analíticas utilizadas por Lucy Calkins como por ejemplo; estudios
comparativos, utilizando notas para identificar características de la personalidad, proveer

The People
Teachers are trained theatre professionals
working with Actors’ Repertory Theatre at Santa
Monica Playhouse, and have studied and taught
with such institutions as The English Shakespeare
Company, the Strasberg Institute, the Royal
National Theatre, and the UCLA, USC, Harvard,
Yale, Brown, Columbia and Sarah Lawrence
Schools of Theatre and Early Childhood
Education.
Alumni include Kate Hudson, Zooey Deschanel,
Emily Deschanel, Jason Ritter, Monet Mazur, Rina
Mimoun (Gilmore Girls, Pushing Daisies), Obi
Ndefo, Jason Segal, Liz Dean, Teri Nunn and
Cami Anderson (New York City Superintendent of
Alternative Schools and Programs).
