A Test of Moral Character - Saint Thomas Aquinas Cathedral
Saint Thomas Aquinas 3 August 2014 Cathedral 3 1 0 Wes t 2 n d St R e n o NV 8 9 5 0 3 7 7 5/3 2 9 - 2 5 7 1 A Test of Moral Character A humanitarian crisis is the kind of thing we typically associate with some other country. So far in 2014, we have witnessed the horrors of civil war in Syria, the refugee crisis impacting Christians and Shia created by the brutality of the ISIS insurgency in Iraq, the escalating violence brought upon civilian populations in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, Hamas rocket attacks on civilian populations in Israel and the non-combatant casualties in Gaza produced by Israeli attempts to disarm Hamas. Wherever we look the world outside our borders is increasingly dangerous. Astonishingly the southern borders of our own country have become the scene of a new humanitarian crisis of catastrophic proportions. Current estimates circulating the wire services suggest that more than 60,000 refugees, mostly women and children, very many of them unaccompanied minors, are right now being detained at the USMexico border. Where do these women and children come from and why are they coming here? They are fleeing the anarchy and violence that at present overwhelms the failed Central American states of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. Bishop Anthony B. Taylor, who serves as a member of the USCCB Committee on Migration notes that the vast majority of these persons “are genuine refugees with well founded fear of death if they refuse to join the criminal gangs that con- trol their neighborhoods, and most have already suffered some form of violence. Honduras has the highest murder rate in the world, with El Salvador and Guatemala right behind. Drug cartels are strengthening their hold on these countries as shipping routes for drugs to Mexico and the United States. Children are specifically targeted to join gangs or are threatened with death or rape.” The failed governments of this region cannot protect these children. We should not let the vicissitudes of contemporary American politics fail them again. + Pax vobis et bonum, Fr Francisco Nahoe OFM Conv Budget News Date August 3 August 10 August 17 August 24 August 31 1st Collection $ $ $ $ $ 2nd Collection $ $ - 2nd Collection To Benefit Long Term Repairs No 2nd collection Peter’s Pence Collection No 2nd collection No 2nd collection ARE YOU, OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW, INTERESTED IN JOINING THE CATHOLIC CHURCH? SENIOR MINISTRY NEWS The Senior Ministry has had a very busy and productive few weeks here are the highlights: The expansion of the Thrift Shop is almost complete and the results are already being realized. We are working on scheduling speakers for our monthly “Lunch and Learn” programs plus coordinating with the “Senior Outreach Services” of UNR to coordinate programs for the fall and winter. As mentioned previously we are in the process of mailing member and/or volunteer forms to all individuals in our files. If you receive our mailing please respond as soon as possible. A return postage paid envelope will be included for your convenience. Our round table meeting to review and/or update our mission statement, programs, was held on Tuesday, July 22nd with no changes to the mission statement. However, several additional items were added to our program/ benefits agenda which should help to clarify our positions regarding specific programs, benefits, commitments as a volunteer and our affiliation with UNR’s “SOS” program. Specifics are being formulated and will be available to all shortly. An old, upright piano is available for inspection at the thrift shop–94 E Glendale, Sparks, (10am to 4pm – Thursday, Friday, Saturday) It appears to be in good working order. There is no adoption fee requested, merely pick it up and give it a good home. Finally, as we have all been experiencing triple digit temperatures in the last few weeks we must be remember that an older person needs to take extra care against dehydration especially if taking common medications. Medications can impair the cardiovascular system’s response to fluid loss. Watch for the warning signs of heat exhaustion, take common sense precautions and call 911 if you suspect you or someone else is headed toward heat exhaustion. Classes for the Charter School will resume on August 11th hence the parking lot will be closed from 10-11AM & from 1:30- 2:30PM. CSA As a parish we are one of six that have not yet made its goal. The parishes that have completed their goal have started to receive reimbursement from $ 400 to $65,000. This over payment of money is not subject to assessment purposes. This means that anything over our goal can be used to fix something, put into the renovation fund, held for a major repair, etc. TOOL SHED Photo of Mary and Christ. This would make a nice wall hanging for a den or spare bedroom that would let guests know that He is watching over this home. You have probably seen Oscar’s new shed in the parking lot. The unit only removed one parking spot. PLEASE BE CAREFUL AROUND THE BUILDING UNTIL WE CAN PUT THE CORRECT BARRACADES AROUND THE UNIT. We also need donations to insulate & dry wall this unit to keep the summer heat down and winter cold out. Please help. Thank you. CONGRESO CARISMÁTICO ANUAL—16 y 17 de Agosto-Nugget Casino Presentadores: Padre Ivo Saúl, Padre Elberto Melendez, Elmer Villanueva, Hermana Gela y Rafael Ángel. Misa de clausura con el Obispo Randolph Calvo. Contaremos con cuidado de niños. Para más información, comuníquese con Virgilio-775-250-3949, ó Jaime-775-843-8509. Entrada Vengan, hambrientos, vengan, sedientos. Tomen agua viva, vengan a mí. Vengan, cansados, vengan, agobiados. Vengan los pobres, vengan los humildes. Vengan, rechazados, vengan, abandonados.
