This paper describes a method for determining the differential adsorption of body odor compounds by three
types of yarn/fiber (cotton, polyester, wool) using proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS). Each
type exhibited different adsorption profiles. Decanal and cyclohexanone adsorbed more to wool than to either
cotton or polyester. Ethylbenzene and butanoic acid methyl ester adsorbed more to polyester than to either
cotton or wool. Cotton was a weaker adsorbent than polyester and wool for all odor compounds tested. Phenol
was adsorbed highly by all three yarns. The study validated the use of PTR-MS to assess the adsorption of
volatile compounds by textile fibers/yarns, and demonstrated its potential to be used as a rapid means of
assessing the kinetics of odor adsorption and release by existing and modified materials.

Modelado dinámico micromecánico de la resistencia de
compuestos textiles al impacto y carga multiaxial
Publicada el 15/08/2015
Publication date: 15 August 2015. Source: Composites Part B: Engineering
Author(s): Ryan L. Karkkainen Micromechanical finite element modeling
has been employed to define the failure behavior of S2 glass/BMI textile
composite materials under impact loading. Dynamic explicit analysis of a
representative volume element (RVE) has been performed to explore
dynamic behavior and failure modes including strain rate effects, damage
localization, and impedance mismatch effects. For accurate reflection of
strain rate effects, differences between an applied nominal strain rate
across a representative volume element (RVE) and the true realized local
strain rates in regions of failure are investigated. To this end, contour plots
of strain rate, as well as classical stress contours, are developed during
progressive failure. Using a previously developed cohesive element failure
model, interfacial failure between tow and matrix phases is considered, as
well as classical failure modes such as fiber breakage and matrix
microcracking.

Publication date: 29 July 2015 Source: Materials Today Author(s): Zhen
Xu, Chao Gao New fibers with increased strength and rich functionalities
have been untiringly pursued by materials researchers. In recent years,
graphene fiber has arisen as a new carbonaceous fiber with high
expectations in terms of mechanical and functional performance. In this
review, we elucidated the concept of sprouted graphene fibers, including
strategies for their fabrication and their basic structural attributes. We
examine the rapid advances in the promotion of mechanical/functional
properties of graphene fibers, and summarize their versatile applications
as multifunctional textiles.

modificadas
Publicada el 29/07/2015
Publication date: 29 July 2015 Source: Biosensors and Bioelectronics
Author(s): Yudai Ogawa, Yuki Takai, Yuto Kato, Hiroyuki Kai, Takeo
Miyake, Matsuhiko Nishizawa A sheet-type, stretchable biofuel cell was
developed by laminating three components: a bioanode textile for fructose
oxidation, a hydrogel sheet containing fructose as fuel, and a gas-diffusion
biocathode textile for oxygen reduction. The anode and cathode textiles
were prepared by modifying carbon nanotube (CNT)-decorated stretchable
textiles with fructose dehydrogenase (FDH) and bilirubin oxidase (BOD),
respectively. Enzymatic reaction currents of anode and cathode textiles
were stable for 30 cycles of 50% stretching, with initial loss of 20–30% in
the first few cycles due to the partial breaking of the CNT network at the
junction of textile fibers. The assembled laminate biofuel cell showed
power of ~0.2mW/cm2 with 1.2 k load, which was stable even at stretched,
twisted, and wrapped forms.

Publication date: 21 July 2015. Source: Composite Structures Author(s):
Hang Yu, Dirk Heider, Suresh Advani A detailed three dimensional finite
element model was developed to predict the through-thickness thermal
conductivity of a textile composite structure consisting of a woven fabric
and matrix in our previous work [1] in which conductive particles are
randomly distributed in the matrix in the unit cell already containing the
woven fabric and the effective thermal conductivity of this three-phase
system is numerically evaluated. In this paper, results of this threecomponent system are compared with a two-component system in which
the thermal conductivity of the matrix and particles is homogenized by a
finite element approximation under the same thermal conditions. A
parametric study of this comparison is conducted over different volume
fractions and thermal conductivities of both textile fabric and loaded
particles and its efficacy is discussed. Typically such composites could be
coated with a conductive skin on the surface.

The aim is to convert the functional prototype from FP7 PUMA project into a commercially-ready intelligent
control system and to introduce this new solution for Pressure Ulcer (PU) prevention in the European Assistive
Technologies market. The novelties of i-LiveRest are a) to measure PU risk in real time based on Tissue
Viability (TV) with impedance, pressure, temperature and humidity textile sensors; and b) to decide the best
combination of PU prevention strategies based on risk, user and context. It can be embedded on wheelchair
and mattresses. i-LiveRest will be the first ICT solution applied to PU risk detection and prevention.
