A message from Fr. Vaughn,
This is usually a season of change here at Saint Mary's, with students and graduates
moving on to the next level and Confirmation and Religious Education programs
concluding. We have had even more change lately with the departure last month of
Fr. Roberto Barco to his native Argentina. Fr. Roberto was largely unknown to the
English-speaking community but he worked very dedicatedly with our Spanish speaking parishioners and ministries. July 1st is also traditionally the date when new
priest assignments begin. Recently we learned that Father Xavier D'Souza our
associate pastor for the past five years has been transferred to serve at St. Michael's
Church in Los Angeles. Father Xavier has served with great dedication here and he
will be missed very much by myself and our staff and no doubt by all of you as
well. He is always willing to dive into various ministries and projects and made an effort to work with all the
different groups in our parish community. He also made great gains in in his Spanish skills which are so
necessary here in the Archdiocese. Please pray for Father Xavier during this transition time. A reception will
be held for him after every Mass here in Palmdale on Saturday June 25 and Sunday June 26 in the Parish Hall
where you will have the opportunity to greet and visit with him. I have known Father Xavier since 2005 when
he first helped me in my parish in Santa Maria. When he came to visit in summer 2009 Fr. Chris Fagan was
suddenly transferred to be pastor in Culver City and Fr. Xavier was able to take his place. I've always been
grateful to him foe being willing to do this for us and he has been serving us with devotion ever since. We
thank Fr. Xavier and congratulate him and he begins this new chapter in his priesthood.
On Saturday June 4 I was privileged to concelebrate the Mass at the cathedral where nine new priests were
ordained to serve in the Archdiocese. One of them, Father Joshua Diener, will begin ministry here July 1st as
our new Associate Pastor. Father Joshua studied music in his college studies and received his Masters of
Divinity from Saint John's Seminary in Camarillo. He is originally from Holy Family Parish in Glendale. We
will have a reception in the Hall after all Masses the weekend of July 9/10 where you will have an opportunity
to welcome him.
Lastly we thank Father Raja who has returned to his seminary and catechetical work in India after two
months with us, and we welcome back Father Vijay who will be with us until the end of July. We also thank
Father Joshua Lee who has retired to our parish and lives independently in Pearblossom, but has been helping
us out a lot. Since we have not yet had a replacement for Fr. Roberto their help and presence is especially
appreciated.
Thank you for all your support of myself and my brother priests and for our Parish Family of St.
Mary's! Please also continue to pray for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life!

Un Mensaje del Padre Vaughn,
Esto suele ser una temporada de cambio aquí, en Santa María, con los estudiantes y graduados pasando al siguiente grado y la Confirmación y programas
de educación religiosa. Hemos tenido incluso más cambio últimamente con la
salida el mes pasado del Padre Roberto Barco a su país natal Argentina. Padre
Roberto fue en gran medida desconocido para la comunidad de habla Inglés,
pero trabajó con empeño con nuestros - feligreses y ministerios hispanos. El
1ero de julio, también es tradicionalmente la fecha en que comienzan las nuevas asignaciones de sacerdotes. Recientemente nos enteramos que Padre Xavier D'Souza nuestro pastor asociado durante los últimos cinco años sera transferido a servir en la iglesia de San Miguel en Los Ángeles. Padre Xavier ha servido con gran dedicación aquí y se le extrañará mucho yo y el personal y sin duda por todos ustedes también. Siempre está
dispuesto a sumergirse en diversos ministerios y proyectos e hizo un esfuerzo para trabajar con todos
los diferentes grupos de nuestra comunidad parroquial. También hizo grandes avances en sus habilidades en español, tan necesarios aquí en la Arquidiócesis. Por favor oren por el Padre Xavier durante
este tiempo de transición. Una recepción se llevará a cabo para él después de cada misa aquí en
Palmdale el sábado 25 de junio y domingo 26 de junio en el Salón Parroquial, donde tendrán la
oportunidad de saludar y despedirse de el. Conosco al Padre Xavier desde el año 2005 por primera
vez me ayudó en la parroquia de Santa María. Cuando vino a visitar en el verano de 2009 Padre Chris
Fagan fue trasladado repentinamente a ser pastor en Culver City y el Padre Xavier fue capaz de tomar
su lugar. Siempre he estado agradecido por estar dispuesto a hacer esto por nosotros y nos ha servido
con devoción desde entonces. Agradecemos a Padre Xavier y lo felicitamos al comenzar este nuevo
capítulo de su sacerdocio.
El sábado 4 de junio tuve el privilegio de concelebrar la misa en la catedral, donde se ordenaron
nueve nuevos sacerdotes para servir en la Arquidiócesis. Uno de ellos, el padre de Joshua Diener, comenzará su ministerio el 1ero de Julio como nuestro nuevo Pastor Asociado. Padre Joshua estudió
música en sus estudios universitarios y recibió su Maestría en Divinidad del Seminario de San Juan
en Camarillo. Es originario de la Parroquia Sagrada Familia en Glendale. Tendremos una recepción
en el salón después de todas las misas del fin de semana del mes de julio 9/10, donde tendrá la oportunidad de darle la bienvenida.
Por último agradecemos Padre Raja que ha vuelto a su trabajo de seminario y catequésis en la India después de dos meses con nosotros, y damos la bienvenida a Padre Vijay que estará con nosotros
hasta el final de julio. Agradecemos también el Padre Joshua Lee que se ha retirado y vive de forma
independiente en Pearblossom, pero nos ha estado ayudando mucho. Dado que todavía no hemos tenido un reemplazo para el P. Roberto su ayuda y su presencia es especialmente apreciado.

MARIA LUNA ON HER RECEPTION OF A MASTERS OF
ART DEGREE IN PASTORAL MINISTRY FROM SAINT
JOHN'S SEMINARY!
I was privileged to attend the ceremony at St John's last month to witness the conferral of her
degree, along with our new associate pastor Fr. Joshua Diener who received his Masters of Divinity. Flor de Maria is
very dedicated to her ministry here at our parish, exhibited by her desire to go above and beyond the call of duty to
commute to the seminary in Camarillo for three years to deepen her education and better enable her to work as our
Religious Education Director. Here in one of the largest parishes in our Archdiocese Mrs. Luna oversees a program that
is many times larger than that of other parishes, a responsibility she carries out with skill, grace, and joy. I am grateful to
her for all she does for our children and young people and
congratulate her on this great achievement!

VIRTUS® Protecting God's Children™ Program
VIRTUS® Protecting God's Children Adult Awareness Program is a three-hour training session
that helps clergy, staff, volunteers and parents to understand the facts and myths about child abuse;
how perpetrators operate; and how caring adults can take five important steps to keep children
safe. The parent session also stresses monitoring of computers, cell phones and other technology
that perpetrators use to gain access to children and young people.
