Pentecost Sunday June 8, 2014 - St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church
Pentecost Sunday June 8, 2014 Pastor’s Column Q: What does Pentecost Sunday means? A: Pentecost Sunday is one of the three most important feasts of the Church. Christmas is the first, wherein we celebrate the incarnation of Jesus taking our human nature except sin. Resurrection is another wherein we celebrate new life because of the victory of Jesus Christ over death. Then Pentecost comes next because the Holy Spirit is poured upon us, the Body of Christ, to continue the work of salvation. Pentecost is considered to be the beginning and birth of the Church. Essentially, Pentecost was not invented by the Church. Historically, the Jews were already celebrating Pentecost 3000 years ago. Pentecost in Israel was a harvest feast (Ex.23:16) in which first fruits were offered in gratitude to God. Later it came to be celebrated as the anniversary of the giving of the Law of Moses on Mt. Sinai. The word itself means simply 50 – “pentecoste = fifty” in the Greek language. It is the 50th day after the Jewish Passover. Fifty was a sacred number of the Jubilee Year which signaled the remission of all debts and a new start for the People of God (Lev.25:6). Q: Why is Pentecost significant in the life of the Church? A: Pentecost is not just a celebration of a past event. It is not just simply a celebration of a feast. It is very significant for the Church because the Holy Spirit is important to us. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit symbolizes fulfillment of the salvific work of Jesus. He had accomplished the mission He was tasked to do and as He returns to the Father, He gives the Holy Spirit to guide, protect and animate the Church. Q: How does the Holy Spirit work in and through us? A: The Holy Spirit is difficult to picture. It is because she is present deep within us when we are in God’s grace. The Holy Spirit is like the air we breathe that we cannot see but important to us. She is like the light that turns on when we have an idea or a fire that burn in our heart. Because of the Holy Spirit we are enabled to become children of God calling Him “Abba Father.” Because of the Holy Spirit we share in the very life of Jesus and to give our life in the service of others. Because of the Holy Spirit the Church has its beginning and with one voice sing a song of praise and thanksgiving for all the wonderful works of God. Because of the Holy Spirit we are impelled, empowered and filled with grace to go to the utmost corners of the earth in order to bring the teaching of Jesus to those still in the darkness of paganism and sin. Because of the Holy Spirit the true followers of Jesus will work signs and wonders, signs of healing and will be docile instruments of Jesus love, peace and mercy. Because of the Holy Spirit, committed men and women will become modern day apostles, confessors and virgins who dedicated their whole life to perfecting the reign of God among men. Because of the Holy Spirit, the martyrs both of blood and of the spirit will constantly profess their loyalty to Christ amid every kind of threat and obstacle for the Spirit who is in them is greater than the spirit of this world. Q: What are the gifts of the Holy Spirit? A: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel (Right Judgment), Fortitude (Courage), Knowledge, Piety (Reverence), Fear of the Lord Q: What are the fruits of the Holy Spirit? A: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-Control. “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Holy Spirit and they shall renew the face of the earth.” God Bless!!!! Fr. Elmer Pray for our Priests June 8 Rev. Lawrence Agi June 9 Rev. Patrick Aherne, CM June 2014 June 10 Rev. Pray for Priests and Vocations “Now we ask you to respect those who work hard among you. When we pray for these servants of Christ, we also win the favor of Christ, for we, in so praying, are furthering His work. Check it out! Lawrence Agi Rev.
