Lent is the season not merely for “giving up things” but realizing that whatever we give up pales in comparison to the goodness the Lord is ready to offer us in its place if we but let Him. Lent is not some dreary season of suffering for its own sake, but rather the time to focus not so much on the creatures, but on the Creator, not so much of what is passing, but rather what perdures, not on the temporary but on the eternal truths. This is equally true of giving up chocolates or giving up gossip or giving up idleness, for in each case we often seek to console our own sense of inadequacy with something that merely gratifies our nervous system. Instead, the Lord asks us to seek consolation in the greater awareness that He has loved us enough to die for us, in spite of His knowing how we spurn Him time and again. To achieve this greater awareness it helps to be deprived of the consolations in the natural order, so that we may be more open to the consolations of the supernatural order. Some sufferings come to us unsought, such as injury, insult or illness, which can either make us bitter or make us more dependent on God’s grace rather than temporal satisfactions. This is the battleground where saints are made. It is the reason why we seek out voluntary mortifications, so that we better clarify our vision of that which is really important in our earthly pilgrimage to eternity. As we begin Lent this Wednesday with the imposition of ashes, let us always keep in mind that wonderful transformation in our souls that the Lord wishes to accomplish for us. Let our theme this Lent: O give thanks to the Lord for He is good: His mercy endures forever. (Psalm 136) God love you, Msgr. Ogle Queridos Amigos Cuaresma en el Año de la Misericordia ... .. Ogle THANK YOU NOTE FROM FR. PARISH BULLETIN BOARD PRAYERS OF THE WEEK ASH WEDNESDAY Our journey to follow Christ to Calvary begins today. We want to enter into the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus which is the purpose of our journey. That is why we mark our heads with HIS cross. For this is a journey to the Easter font, where we will renew the promises of our Baptism, remembering that in dying with him in the waters of Baptism, we are re-born with him to everlasting life. On this special day, Ash Wednesday, may my small sacrifices in fasting be a way to clear away the clutter in my life to see you more clearly. May my longing for meat and other food, help me to focus my life today more outside myself. Let me be aware of those who are in so much more suffering than I am and may I be aware of them as the brothers and sisters you have placed in my life. Lord, I know there is darkness within me and around me. Bless these days with your Word. Let your Light shine in the darkness. Help me long for that Light until we celebrate it at the Vigil six weeks from now. And most of all Lord, help me to honor this day with the ashes on my forehead. They help me remember where I have come from and where I am going. May I acknowledge to you my sins and my deep need for your loving forgiveness and grace. I pray that this Lenten season will make me so much more aware of how much I need your healing in my life. THURSDAY BE SILENT and HEAR THE LORD... The letters in the word "SILENT" also form the word "LISTEN." What better way to get to know HIM then by LISTENING in silence for HIS voice... being able to LOVE HIM as HE loves you... LEARNING of HIM and from HIM... and LEAVING yourself better off once you found HIM. HE always knew YOU from before you were born. This Lent, instead of “giving up”… give HIM moments of your silence as you walk with HIM on this journey to Calvary. FRIDAY Jesus sympathizes with your weaknesses, too. He knows them. He knows your sins. He knows how it feels to be tempted. He knows the itch. He knows the need. He knows the doubt. He knows the selfloathing. Every sin, every doubt, every human urge, every bit of want and coveting and every second of rage. He not only experienced all of those temptations Himself but He took yours upon Himself. And then He died. That was the sacrifice that makes you acceptable to God. And He rose. He gives you the forgiveness that makes you right with God. SATURDAY I know you have redeemed me from the darkness by your suffering and death on the cross... yet, I continue to stumble and fall into sin because I am weak and I allow everything around me to cast a shadow on my faith and trust in your goodness. Help me make this journey with you... give me the strength to walk toward the light of your Resurrection. I know you are there beside me always... I just have to be reminded. FASTING: All the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are also bound to observe the fasting regulation on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This practice involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Light sustenance may also be taken on two other occasions in the course of the day, The Church also requests that pastors and parents see to it that young persons who are not bound to follow the above requirements, are educated in a authentic sense of penance. EASTER DUTY: After they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, all the faithful are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season, unless for a good reason it is fulfilled at another time during the year. Easter time begins at the Vigil on Holy Saturday and concludes with the celebration of Pentecost. By special indult, for the Dioceses in the United States, this period is extended to include the period from Ash Wednesday to Trinity Sunday. The following should also be noted: By divine law, all the faithful are required to do penance. In view of this, the obligation to observe, as a whole or “substantially” the penitential days specified by the Church, is a serious one. In addition, all other Fridays of the year remain as days of penance in prayerful remembrance of the Passion of Jesus Christ. While abstinence, in a true spirit of penance, is commended, the Bishops of the United States have indicated that each individual may substitute for that tradition some other practice of voluntary self-denial or personal penance. This may involve acts of mortification, temperance, prayer or charity. STATIONS OF THE CROSS During Lent, we will have Stations of the Cross every Friday after the 12:00 pm Mass. English and Spanish at 7:00pm.
