Then, when the opening is just a split of light, and we try to remember that wonderful scenery that was offered to us, it gives us a wide open view of a future without end. This future dies the same day I remember that yesterday”. The force of Venus / La fuerza de Venus 11 intuitive than professional, young Roberto grew in a creative environment that gave color and texture to his memories. Before learning how to read and write, the future artist could identify and appreciate big masterpieces of Art History. If he had little interest in going to school, it was because Painting was his language or vocation. If Roberto Cortázar acquired “this great interest for the others” in an early stage, it is surely because painting has allowed him to discover the world as a scenery that differs, although in a confused way, from its nobility and instability, from its force and vulnerability. At the age of fourteen, Cortázar begins to study painting in Mexico, in the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado “La Esmeralda”. One of the most exceptional moments of this period of education is the discovery of one of the first works of Eugène Delacroix: The Barquet of Dante or Dante et Virgile aux enfers. But it is his famous work, where a fragile boat that sails in a furious and unleashed sea is taken by assault by the damned, Le Radeau de la Méduse, which surprises Roberto Cortázar exceedingly and, on his own words, it causes him “ a blow of blood in the head ”. While the artist in process demonstrates accurate sensibility for the mental universes of Leonardo da Vinci, for the mystery of Miguel Angel’s Moises or for his monumental drawings, in the same way, he does not stop being impressed by the work of Monet, Corot or Cezanne, to whom he perceives like “the best”. His interest also goes along the work of Matisse, Giacometti, Bacon, Dubuffet; Wols, Auberbach, Kokoshka or Soulages. It is a question of aesthetic worlds, certainly, very distant ones, that will nourish Roberto’s future creation like synthesis. Bathers and horse in the sea / Bañistas y caballo en el mar 12 13 This time – Memory is constituted as a historical time that marks in a deep way the trajectory of the artist, insinuating and being on the most daily and tenuous notes. In this sense, it is possible to confess that when being a witness of the investigations of Roberto Cortázar we discover a tortuous ocean of the unknown who leads us to the understanding. With a clear mastery of skill and expression, Cortázar manages to place the observer in a surprising situation, which allows him to forget the barriers between himself and the work, and leads him to rethinking vital questions of his ego, and his interior. In this way, the artist makes the witness a victim of the climate of his works and a speaker who suffers, talks and is wrapped in the paroxysm that shakes to the silhouettes that filter in this ambience. Cortázar human comedy transfers the situation of the dark forest into a light that rescues: a long and difficult search, similar to the one of a man on the street on his daily trips, facing his difficulty of being, and his sorrow of living in punishment. This series about the culture and its dismembered body invites the spectator to move to the past. It reminds him not to forget his reality and to stop glimpsing the pieces of an uncertain future. A future that begins to fade away little by little, living in a society marked with scars that continue to outline its present. Los Desmembrados is an accumulative dialogue that thrives on the experience of the artist and on the master pieces he admires. It is perceived as a chat not always warm, but upset, between the artist and these art pieces to understand and to construct his own narrative of problems. In this series, the spectator and the artist stroll in the same inhospitable geography of solitude, worry, suspense and uncer tainty that mark his existence. The work consolidates an exten sive way covered by crashes where both, him and the artist travel without identity, or with the certainty of not knowing who they are after so many ruptures.
