Meet Tutor &
Discuss Course Plan
Before you arrive, we will email you a
questionnaire asking about your level,
reasons for studying English and aims.
Using this information, we will create
a suggested course plan.
On your first day, we will give you a
spoken and written placement test to
find your level of English. During the
course, your teachers will monitor
your progress. We can change your
level on the General English course
any week, when you and your
teachers agree you are ready.
In your first week, you will meet your
course tutor, who will discuss your
course plan with you. This can be
changed at any time. The course plan
will take into consideration your level
and our course dates – see next page.

Course Descriptions
General English
FCE Examination Course
Lessons follow our syllabus and cover speaking, listening,
reading and writing skills, plus grammar, vocabulary,
pronunciation and study skills, with topics changing weekly.
We do not follow a coursebook but instead use a wide range
of teaching resources, and we provide you with all lesson
materials. Our teachers work together to monitor your
progress and make sure you receive tuition at the right level.
We can change your level any week, when you and your
teachers agree you are ready.
The Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE) is a test
of your all-round English skills in both formal and informal
contexts. On this course, you will develop your fluency,
accuracy and understanding and learn techniques to help you
pass the exam. The exam consists of five papers: Reading,
Writing, Use of English, Listening and Speaking.
IELTS Examination Course
The Lewis School has a strong history in providing IELTS
courses, with many previous students following degree
courses in Southampton and other UK cities. Our IELTS
course focuses entirely on the skills and language necessary
to pass the IELTS (Academic Training) exam, enabling you to
make rapid progress.
University Preparation
This course is designed for international students who will be
going on to study undergraduate or postgraduate courses.
The aim of this course is not only to develop students’ English
language and academic skills before they begin a degree
programme, but to prepare students for life at a British
university. Skills covered on the course include taking notes
during a lecture, summarising information, giving presentations,
writing essays, making references and writing a bibliography.
LCCI Examination Course
The LCCI English for Business exam (London Chamber of
Commerce and Industry) tests your reading and writing skills
in a business context. Our course teaches you how to write
documents such as letters, reports, memos and articles.
