Starting the New School Year
Basic Busing Information:
The District provides the student bus service for each school’s service area. Stops are
determined by grade groups and by distances students live from school according to the
following district procedure, as set forth by the School Board: Elementary school, one mile
or more from school; middle school, one-and-a-half miles or more; high school, two or
more miles away from school. Regular bus stops where there is only 1 student will be
eliminated if the student is a no-show for 2 weeks. Please call the Transportation office
(206)631-7502) if your child is the only one at the stop and will be absent. When waiting
for your child to return home, please allow 10 minutes for traffic congestion before calling
Transportation.
Bus Stop Information:
Regular program bus information will be published in the August 30th issue of the
Highline Times. Bus information is also available on our school district’s website, just
click on the Quick Links for Bus Schedule.
Just prior to opening day, students requiring special transportation will be individually
notified of their bus route numbers, stop locations, and times by mail. Students whose
special transportation requests are received after 8/12/13 will have a transportation start date
after the start of school and will be contacted when transportation is set up.
Route Numbers:
Each bus has a route number prominently displayed in the right side window to the left of
the entrance door. Please note that in some cases there is a difference in route numbers
between morning and afternoon for a particular bus stop.
First Day Transportation:
For better service, we have found that children become more comfortable with the bus and
bus rules if they ride both ways for the first few days. Please teach your children their
home address, phone number, and daycare name. Also practice the walk route between
the stop and home and set up a buddy system with other children whenever possible.
If your child is a “must-be-met” student and an adult (or child of at least 12 years of age)
is not at the stop when the bus arrives, your child will be returned to his/her school,
depending on the time of day. If the “must be met” parent does not make contact with
Transportation or the school to arrange for pick-up of the child, the school will call
district security or the local police department.

Kindergarten
Transportation
This year, the district
will have early
dismissal days, all of which are on a
Friday. Your child’s school calendar
will have this information or you can
contact your school. , Kindergarten
will follow the regular full-day early
dismissal schedule that grades 1-6
follow.
To assure a smooth
beginning, please review the
following guidelines:
1. Before a bus stop will be set up,
parents must turn in, to the school or
Transportation, a completed
Transportation Kindergarten Request
Form. Upon receipt in
Transportation, it takes three to seven
business days to route a student.
Forms may be obtained from your
school. Forms received after August
12th, 2013 may not be processed
until after school starts.
2. IMPORTANT: Have your child
wear the name tag provided by the
school, including the bus stop
location, for the first two weeks of
school.
3. We encourage parents to put their
child on the bus the first day of
school and follow in a car, if desired.
4. Parents must be at the bus stop at
the end of the school day for the first
two weeks or until the student knows
their way home. Students not met
during this time will be returned to
school. Per School Board directive,
while it is encouraged, the district
does NOT require full day
kindergarteners to be met after the
first two weeks. If any concerns,
please contact Transportation.
5. The driver will instruct students
on bus stop and bus ridership safety.
6. If you are meeting the bus, please
park or stand on the same side of the
street as the entrance door.

escuela de su hijo tiene esta información o usted

kindergarten seguirán las reglas regulares de
salida temprano que siguen los del grados 1º a
6º. Para asegurar un comienzo bien, por favor
revise las guias que siguen.

Antes de establecer una parada,
los padres deben llevar a la escuela o a

para kindergarten. Cuando transporte la recibe
dura tres a siete días de trabajo el establecer la
ruta. Las planillas las puede obtener en su
escuela. Las planillas que se reciban después
del 12 de Agosto de 2013 serán procesadas
después que las clases comiencen.
2. IMPORTANTE: Haga que su hijo use la
etiqueta con el nombre que le da la escuela,
incluyendo la dirección de la parada, durante las
primeras dos semanas de clase. .
3. Animamos a los padres a que pongan al niño

sigan al autobús en auto, si lo desean.

OPEN ENROLLMENT:
Transportation will be provided by the district as follows: For a student
involved in the open enrollment program, it shall be the responsibility
of the parent or guardian to furnish transportation. District
transportation may be utilized provided seating space is available and
no additional bus service is required. Bus stops will not be created for
space available riders. Please contact Transportation to request this
service. A letter documenting your request will then be sent to you for
signature and must be returned to Transportation. Space Available
siblings of students “assigned” to the bus, will be placed first.
SAFE ROUTE WALK MAPS: Specific guidelines have been set
forth by Highline Public Schools that define “hazardous walking
conditions”. Hazardous walking conditions to Highline schools are
reviewed by the school district annually. Pedestrian safe walk route
information is on the Transportation page of the district website.

HE FIRST FEW DAYS ON THE BUS YOUR CHILD
WILL LEARN . . .
LOADING PROCEDURE SAFETY:

To be at the bus stop no later than 5 minutes prior to bus scheduled
time. (This applies all school year.)

To stand in line quietly at the stop or school.

To watch for the red flashing lights, stop paddle with crossing arm.

To watch the bus driver for direction or signal. Check traffic.

To cross in front of the bus when safe .

To understand the location of the school bus stop.

Cell phone use may be prohibited if it causes a distraction to the bus
driver.
SEATING ON THE BUS/SAFETY:

To follow direction of driver as to where and how to sit safely on
the bus. To avoid discipline problems, students may be assigned
seats on the bus.

To understand the importance of the drivers’ need to keep their eyes
on the road. The buses are equipped with video and or digital/audio
equipment to assist with student management. (See Bus Rules for
student conduct).
UNLOADING SAFETY:

To remain seated until the bus stops and the door opens.

To leave the bus in single file, without shoving or pushing.

About the school bus DANGER ZONE; move directly away from
the bus when exiting.

TO NEVER WALK, RUN NEXT TO, OR TOUCH A MOVING
BUS. Once the wheels start rolling, the driver will NOT stop to
allow late boarders.
SAFE WALK TO SCHOOL DAY: Washington State asks parents to
walk with their children on October 9, 2013 to practice safe walking
procedures.

TO ALWAYS ASK THE DRIVER FOR HELP if you drop
something near the bus. NEVER try to retrieve the item.
DIFFERENT BUS STOPS (This applies to ALL grades):

To watch the bus driver for a signal or directions and always check
for oncoming traffic before crossing the street.

All students are required to get on and off at their
assigned bus stop unless special arrangements have

WHAT IS THE DANGER ZONE ?
The Danger Zone is the space all around the school bus. It extends out 10 feet in all
directions. The School Bus Driver cannot see you in this zone. He or she cannot see

MATRICULA ABIERTA :
Es distrito dará transporte de la forma siguiente: cuando un estudiante está en el

SEGURIDAD EN EL PROCEDIMIENTO DE MONTAR:

Prohibited Items:
When ARE you supposed to stop for school buses?
State law, WAC: 392-145-021, mandates that heavy, sharp, bulky, and
other articles which may be hazardous in the event of an accident or an
emergency stop shall not be transported in the passenger area of any
school bus. Specific attention is directed to items such as cell phones,
all balls, skateboards, roller blades/shoes, vaulting poles, many
musical instruments, firearms, weapons, breakable containers,
flammables, balloons, and all forms of animal life, except Seeing Eye
Dogs. Some class projects may also be prohibited. (Check with
Transportation, in advance). Items must be able to fit in the
student’s backpack or lap and not extend into the seat beside them or
higher than the top of the seat-back.
1. You must stop for all school buses while the red lights AND/
OR stop paddle are activated & you are
traveling on a two lane roadway. You
must stop if traveling in the same direction as the bus on a multi-lane roadway.
Music Instruments: Extremely large and bulky instruments shall

Moderately large and bulky instruments shall be positioned in the seat
with the student. These include: baritone horns, french horns, tenor
saxes, trombones, bass clarinets, and bass guitars. The student will sit
in the seat with his/her musical instrument positioned vertically
between their knees.
Small instruments may be carried on the student’s lap. These
instruments include: flutes, oboes, clarinets, alto saxes, trumpets, and
any instrument of comparable size. Individual documentation is
available at each school or the Transportation web page.
Exit Drills: The regularly scheduled drivers will perform their own
drills as they arrive at school on the appointed day. Students are asked
to wear appropriate clothes and shoes to exit the emergency exit door.
These state-mandated drills will be done in October & again in March.
A short verbal review will also be performed twice in the school year
by the drivers and by all field trip drivers.
WAC 392-145-060 (3): School bus drivers shall have the primary
responsibility for the safety of passengers while they are boarding the
bus, while they are on the bus, and while they are disembarking the
bus and crossing the roadway. If passengers must cross the road, the
driver shall make reasonable effort to ensure that they cross safely.
The driver shall also take reasonable action to ensure that passengers
boarding or disembarking from the bus are within his/her view at all
times while crossing in front of the bus and never behind the bus.
WAC 392-145-060 (7): Whenever school children have to cross the
roadway, the school bus shall stop in the roadway and display the stop
sign and red, alternately flashing lamps.
Substitute Bus Drivers & Monitors Wanted:
We are now accepting applications for substitute bus
drivers, which may lead to a permanent position.
Complete training is provided. We seek mature people
at least 21 years of age, high moral character, excellent
health, good work record, clean driving record, and
enjoy the challenge of working with children. Please

2. You do NOT stop if the roadway has
more than 2 lanes of travel, and you are
traveling in the opposite direction.
3. RCW 46.61.370: Penalty for running a stop paddle and/or
flashing red lights is currently $394.
Bus Rules:
Rules for riding the bus are intended to communicate ways students
can acquire the safest transportation possible. The entire list is printed
on the back of the conduct report and includes:
1. Arrive at the bus stop only five minutes prior to the stop time.
2. Walk, not run, as you get on and off the bus. Get seated quickly.
3. Obey the bus driver; driver can assign seats.
4. Keep the aisle and window ledge behind the rear seat clear of
books and bags.
5. Talk quietly and stay in your seat.
6. Keep your hands and head inside the windows.
7. If necessary, after the driver signals, carefully cross the street in
front of the bus when entering or exiting.
8. Food and beverage consumption is prohibited on school buses.
Potential life-threatening situations can occur from choking on
food items and plastic food bags. Please encourage students to
consume food and drink when they are off the bus.
9. Students are to remain seated while the bus is in motion and are
not to stand up until the bus has come to a complete stop.
10. Items that cause injury to others, such as sticks, breakable
containers, any type of firearm, straps, or pins extending from
clothing are not allowed on the bus. Also, no animal, reptile, fish
or fowl is permitted on the bus except a “Seeing Eye Dog”.
11. Students are to assist in keeping the bus clean by keeping their
waste paper and other trash off the floor and seats.
12. Restitution to the school district for damage to the bus equipment
resulting from misconduct shall be made by those responsible.
Conduct Reports:
While the vast majority of students conduct themselves in a
responsible manner, the activities of a few make it necessary to
establish general guidelines for handling misconduct and to make clear
the consequences students can expect if they behave in a manner that
could prevent safe operation of the bus. Drivers will fill out a Conduct
Report form and turn it in to the transportation supervisor for the initial
step. Each form will be sent to the appropriate school administrator
for processing according to district policy. Drivers are asked to
attempt phone contact with parents.
First Conduct Report: Student may lose riding privileges for up to five
days, as determined by the school administrator.
Second Conduct Report: Student may lose riding privileges for up to
ten days, as determined by the school administrator.
Emergency Action: Any student whose behavior is of such a nature
that his or her action endangers the health or safety of others will be
removed immediately by school administration.

WAC 392-145-020 (4) Los chóferes de los autobuses son los responsables
principales de la seguridad de los pasajeros cuando están montando en el
autobús, mientras están en el autobús y cuando están bajándose del autobús y
cruzando la calle. Si los pasajeros tienen que cruzar la calle, el chofer tiene que
tomar una acción razonable para asegurar que cruzan con seguridad. El chofer

buen historial de trabajo, buen historial de manejar y que les guste

¿Cuándo se supone que usted tiene que parar por un autobús
escolar?
Usted debe parar por todos los autobuses escolares cuando la luz roja
intermitente está encendida Y/O los signos de parada están activados y
usted está manejando en la misma dirección o en una calle de dos vías.
NO PARE si la calle tiene más de 2 vías y usted viene en dirección
contraria.

Reglas de los autobuses :
Las reglas para viajar en los autobuses tienen la intención de
comunicar las formas en que los estudiantes pueden adquirir el
transporte más seguro posible. La lista completa está impresa en la
parte de atrás del informe de conducta e incluye:
1. Llegar a la parada del autobús sólo cinco minutos antes de la hora de
parada señalada.
2. Caminar, no correr cuando sube o baja del autobús
3. Obedecer al chofer
4. Mantener los pasillos y la repisa de la ventanilla del asiento de atrás sin
libros o mochilas.
5. Hablar en voz baja y permanecer en su asiento.
6. Mantener sus manos y cabeza dentro del autobús
7. Si es necesario, cruzar la calle cuidadosamente por el frente del autobús,
cuando entre o cuando salga.
8. Se prohíbe comer o beber en los autobuses. Pueden ocurrir situaciones
que amenazan la vida por atorarse con los alimentos o los cartuchos plásticos.
Por favor, anime a los estudiantes a comer o tomar cuando están fuera del
autobús. La cantidad de residuos que dejan en los autobuses también crea
trabajo extra para los chóferes.
9. Los estudiantes deben permanecer sentados mientras el autobús se está
moviendo y no deben pararse hasta que esté completamente parado.
10. Cosas que sean peligro para otros como palos, contenedores frágiles,
cualquier tipo de arma, correas, o alfileres que se salgan de la ropa no se
permiten en el autobús. Tampoco se permiten animales, reptiles, peces o aves
solamente perros que ayuden a ver.
11. Los estudiantes deben ayudara mantener el autobús limpio no dejando en
el suelo o los asientos papeles u otras basuras.
12. Cuando se dañe algo de autobús como resultado de mala conducta, las
personas responsables tendrán que pagar restitución a la escuela.
Reportes de Conducta :
Aunque la mayoría de los estudiantes se comporta de manera responsable, las
actividades de unos cuantos hace necesario establecer reglas generales para
manejar la mala conducta y dejar claras las consecuencias si se comportan de
forma que interfiera con la operación segura del autobús. Como primer paso,
los chóferes llenarán un informe de conducta y se lo entregarán a su
supervisor en transporte y el lo mandará al administrador apropiado de la
escuela para procesarlo, de acuerdo con las regulaciones del distrito.
Primer informe de conducta: El estudiante puede perder el derecho de viajar
en el autobús de uno a cinco días, de acuerdo con la decisión del administrador de
la escuela
Segundo informe de conducta: Los estudiantes pueden perder el derecho de
viajar en el autobús por diez días, de acuerdo con la decisión del
administrador de la escuela.
Acción de emergencia: cualquier estudiante que se comporte de forma que su
acción peligre la salud o seguridad de otros será sacado del programa de
transporte inmediatamente por la administración de la escuela.

pecial Program Transportation:
Special program transportation includes Balance, ECEAP, ELL,
Gifted, and Special Education. Only Special Education
passengers, (as defined by OSPI - Transp.), will be picked up and
returned to a stop usually within view of the passengers’ home,
(depending on the passenger’s maturity, age and disability). There are
special responsibilities for parents and care givers of students receiving
special transportation. You can help your child’s bus driver by
remembering a few rules:

arents Driving To School:

PLEASE, DO NOT ENTER, BLOCK OR PARK IN THE
BUS ZONE. USE THE PARENT LOT.

Park in an area where your child will not have to cross in front of
other vehicles. Teach your child to use the crosswalk and look
both ways before crossing.
In the Morning:
ARE YOU MEETING YOUR CHILD AT THE BUS STOP TODAY?

Use extreme CAUTION ! If at all possible, avoid parking across the
street from the bus stop. An excited child seeing Mom or Dad across
the street will frequently just dart out into traffic.
Have your child outside the home or vehicle & waiting at the
bus stop five minutes before the scheduled pick-up time. This
includes home bus stops. If your child is not going to ride the bus
to school, please call the Transportation Department at least 30
minutes prior to scheduled pick-up, at 206-631-7502. (Dispatch
opens at 5:30 AM). The driver may stop going by after 3 days
of no-show and no phone call. Dispatch will contact you to
determine if we need to eliminate your stop.
After School:

If your child normally does not cross a street, park where your
child can SAFELY reach you without crossing. (Park on the
same side as the exit/service door).

If your child crosses the street daily, park accordingly. Instruct
your child to follow his/her daily safety rules:

Be at the bus stop five minutes before the scheduled drop-off
time.
1. ALWAYS FOLLOW THE DRIVER’S DIRECTION
2. LOOK LEFT, RIGHT AND LEFT AGAIN.
3. CROSS IN FRONT OF THE BUS - NEVER BEHIND IT.

If you cannot meet your child, arrange to have a responsible
person, at least 12 years of age, meet the bus.
Emergency Procedures:

Call the Transportation Department with that person’s name and
description before the end of the school day.
Emergency Bulletin: In November the Emergency Bulletin will be

If your child is required to be met and is not met, and we are
unable to reach you by telephone, your child will remain on the
bus and be returned to school at the end of the bus run.
For ECEAP students, if your child is not met 3 times, the
student may be dropped from the ECEAP program. For
ECEAP and Preschool, “Must Be Met” means the parent/
guardian MUST meet the student at the bus door or within sight
of the bus driver.

ECEAP students will be issued name tags upon enrollment. To
assist with identification, we encourage your child to wear it
either on their clothing or backpack every day throughout the
year.

When moving or changing a daycare, please furnish the new
address and phone information to the Transportation Department
AND to the appropriate special program office at least 7 business
days before you wish your child to be picked up at the new
location.

Daycare must be within service area of the school the student is
attending.

STUDENTS: Transportation will be provided from a
bus stop location or the residential school to the school of
attendance for the current year. Students will attend their own

school typically within 2 business days. Transportation does
not have a lost and found. Please contact your school office.

afuera, cinco minutos antes de la hora señalada para la parada. Esto
incluye las paradas en la casa.

Enséñele a su hijo a cruzar en las zonas señaladas y mirar en ambas
direcciones antes de cruzar.

Use mucho CUIDADO Si es posible evite el esperarlo al otro lado de la calle
donde para el autobús. Un niño entusiasmado por ver a su madre o padre al otro
lado de la calle frecuentemente sale como una flecha en medio del tráfico.
Si su hijo no va a ir en el autobús a la escuela, llame al departamento de
transporte al 206 631 7502, 30 minutos antes de la hora de recogida. (El
departamento abre a las 5:30 a.m.) El chofer puede deja de pasar por la
parada des pues de tres dia que estén ausentes y si no llaman a la oficina.
Después de clases:
 Esté en la parada cinco minutos antes de la hora de llegada.

Si usted no puede recogerlo, coordine con una persona responsable (mayor
de 12 años) para que espere el autobús

Llame al departamento de transporte antes de la hora de terminarse las
clases y dé el nombre y la descripción de esa persona antes de la hora de
terminarse el día escolar.

Si su hijo necesita que alguien lo recoja y no hay nadie y no podemos
localizarlo por teléfono, su hijo permanecerá en el autobús y se llevará de
nuevo a la escuela al final del recorrido Para los estudiantes de ECEAP.
Si esto sucede 3 veces, el estudiante será dado de baja del programa
ECEAP. Para el preescolar de ECEAP, “deben esperarlo” significa que un
padre o tutor DEBE esperar al estudiante en la puerta del autobús o a la
vista del chofer.

A todos los estudiantes de ECEAP se les dará una etiqueta cuando se
matriculen. Las etiquetas deben ser usada todo el ano escolar en la ropa o
mochila.

Cuando se muden o cambien de guardería, por favor, dé la nueva dirección
y teléfono al departamento de transporte y en la oficina del programa
especial por lo menos 7 días antes de la fecha en que quiere que recojan a
su hijo en el lugar nuevo.
La guardería de sus niño debe de estar en el servicio de la escuela que esta
asistiendo.


studiantes que tienen que asistir a otra escuela por
cupo: Se dará transporte del lugar de una parada o de la escuela del
vecindario a la escuela donde está asistiendo este año. El año siguiente el
estudiante asistirá a la escuela residencial que le corresponda .

OSAS ENCONTRADAS Y PERDIDAS : Artículos que
se queden en el autobús el chofer los guardará por unos cuantos
días, para darle la oportunidad al estudiante de recogerlos. Los artículos que no pidan se llevarán al a escuela.
Transporte no tiene “cosas perdidas y encontradas’.
¿VA A ESPERAR A SU HIJO HOY EN LA PARADA DEL AUTOBUS?
EVITE UN DESASTRE:

Si su hijo normalmente no cruza la calle, estacione donde su hijo pueda
llegar a usted con SEGURIDAD sin cruzar la calle.

Si su hijo cruza la calle diariamente, estacione de acuerdo con eso, pero
insístale en que siga sus reglas diarias de seguridad:
1. SIEMPRE SIGA LAS INSTRUCCIONES DEL CHOFER.
2. MIRE A LA IZQUIERDA, A LA DERECHA Y A LA IZQUIERDA DE
NUEVO
3.
CRUCE POR EL FRENTE DEL VEHICULO – NUNCA POR
DETRÁS.

rocedimientos de emergencia :
Boletín de emergencia: En noviembre se enviará a las casas, a través
de la escuela, el boletín de emergencia. En él aparece una lista de los
cambios en las paradas por inclemencia del tiempo, las estaciones de radio y
televisión para partes del tiempo y un lugar en el Internet donde tiene acceso a
información.
Aunque no podemos prever todos los problemas posibles, la experiencia nos dice
que podemos anticipar las dificultades siguientes:
1. Cierre o demora en las clases.
2. Restricciones o cierres en las calles.
Busque el boletín de paradas de emergencia nuevo que su hijo llevará a casa este
otoño y guarde la información en un lugar seguro para referencia, particularmente
durante los meses de invierno cuando las condiciones adversas de las calles
pueden causar problemas de transporte. Para recibir información de emergencia
oiga/mire las estaciones de radio y TV locales.
